Brouwer, Aron. "‘Every Frenchman Must Read This Book’: The Impact of Politics and Ideology on the Production, Translation and Dissemination of Hitler’s Mein Kampf in France, 1933-1939." Quaerendo 49, no. 3 (November 8, 2019): 195–227. http://dx.doi.org/10.1163/15700690-12341443.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the political and ideological circumstances surrounding the two French translations of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf during the 1930s. It focuses on the personal histories of the translation agents involved in the production, translation and dissemination of Mein Kampf—such as diplomats, politicians, investors, publishers, editors and translators. By uncovering and exposing their ideological attitudes, this study shows how Hitler’s book was altered, censored and repurposed in France to suit different political agendas. Consequently, it argues that the two French translations during the prewar period, entitled Mon Combat (1934) and Ma Doctrine (1938), should be regarded as historical artifacts in their own right, rather than mere reproductions.

Heynders, Odile. "The Everyday Life of a European Man: Knausgård’s Literary Project as Social Imagination." International Journal for History, Culture and Modernity 6, no. 1 (March 28, 2018): 1–24. http://dx.doi.org/10.18352/hcm.544.

Abstract:
Between 2009 and 2011, Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgård published a monumental novel project in six parts (over 3,500 pages) in which he described the minutiae of daily life: family troubles, ordinary routines, everyday discourse, drinking, strolling through town and so on. The literary project became a media sensation with translations in many languages, readers all over the Western world, and a lot of interviews and reviews to be found online. Why were the books so successful; what is it in them that engages readers? Drawing on theories of sociologist C. Wright Mills and philosopher Henri Lefebvre, this article argues that this ambitious as well as paradoxical literary project sheds light on the social and cultural position of the late modern subject in a European middle class. Knausgård in his self-narration creates an Everyman, while at the same time fashioning a self as an obsessed artist that is everything but ordinary. In a crucial part of the final book, Knausgård shows us Adolf Hitler as a bitter young man, but also as someone ‘whose youth resembles my own’. Here the self-positioning relates to ongoing European history as well as to the lack of historical perspective in our current age.

Vorspann Die Nerven lagen blank in Vinnica.

Abstract:
AbstractObjective: The assessment of the personality status of Adolf Hitler using a structured interview schedule, the Personality Assessment Schedule, with two informants, one a psychiatrist with an interest in psychohistory and the other a historian with special knowledge of the Third Reich and Weimar Republic. Method: The Personality Assessment Schedule was given in two forms to the two informants at different times; on each occasion Hitler was assessed as he was in 1937. Results: There was considerable discrepancy between the ratings of the two informants, the historian recording less-personality disturbance in all areas of function, although correlations between the two sets of ratings were relatively high (R1 0.5-0.6), with rater bias accounting for the differences in severity. Both informants regarded Hitler as having a dissocial personality disorder (using the new ICD-10 criteria), but the psychiatrist's rating also scored the diagnosis of paranoid and histrionic personality disorders. Conclusions: Interview schedules which use informants to assess personality disorder can be of value in examining the personality status of historical figures.

THE VIENNESE PERIOD IN ADOLF HITLER’S LIFE AS PRESENTED BY BRIGITTE HAMANN AND AUGUST KUBIZEKThe article discusses the literature and the findings concerning the relatively least explored questions concerning Adolf Hitler, namely those of his youth. As the author stresses, just over a decade ago Polish readers interested in the Hitler phenomenon knew much less than they do now. Thanks to several books recently published in Poland they have had a chance to considerably expand their knowledge. The present author points to two figures, Brigitte Hamann and August Kubizek, focusing on the similarities and differences in their approach to this period of Hitler’s life.

Effects of the movie My Fuehrer – The Truly Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler by Dani Levy were tested with regard to: (a) attitudes toward Hitler, (b) the perceived role of the German population in Nazi Germany, (c) the perception of present danger from national socialist tendencies, and (d) the subjective need for continued preoccupation with German history. A total of 110 Germans were invited to a cinema and randomly assigned to the control group that filled in the relevant questionnaire before the movie, or to the film group that filled in the questionnaire after the movie. The film group reported fewer negative attitudes toward Hitler than the control group and saw the German population less as victims. Attitudes toward right-wing political parties and empathy, as well as demographic variables, exerted significant moderator effects. Results are discussed with regard to the public controversy concerning a potential trivialization of Hitler and National Socialism by the movie.

Objective: The doctor who attended the mother of Adolf Hitler in her terminal illness has been blamed as a cause of the Holocaust. The medical details recorded of this professional relationship are presented and discussed. Conclusions: Dr Bloch's medical care of Mrs Hitler was consistent with the prevailing medical practice of the management of fungating breast carcinoma. Indeed, the general practitioner's care and attention of the family appear to have been astute and supportive. There is nothing to suggest that Dr Bloch's medical care was other than competent. Doctors who have the (mis)fortune to professionally attend major figures of history may be unfairly viewed, despite their appropriate and adequate care.

Abstract:
Objective: To examine the life and career of Theodor Morell, personal physician to Adolf Hitler. Conclusions: For nine years, Dr Theodor Morell had almost exclusive access to Hitler. Hitler, an illness phobic, lied about his medical history, refused to be examined except in the most superficial fashion and tended to accept or reject treatment according to his whim. Morell used a range of complementary treatments, intravenous glucose, amphetamines and opioid injections. While Morell's methods were suspect, it is doubtful he did his patient much harm. Dismissed by the disillusioned Dictator, he was captured by the Allies but never prosecuted, dying in 1948.
