Abstract:
Drawing on three Chinese translations each of Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club (1989) and The Kitchen God's Wife (1991), this project examines, from a feminist perspective, gender issues in Chinese translations of Chinese American women's literature, with special attention paid to the translators' gender consciousness and ideologies as reflected in their translations of 'female alienation'. Existing studies on Chinese American women's literature, in both America and mainland China, mainly address identity politics, culture, Orientalism, and feminism, and fail to consider the role of translation. This project, however, analyses both the feminist consciousness and the issues which are reflected in these two novels and in their Chinese translations. This project innovatively applies the feminist concept of 'female alienation' to literary translation studies. The concept of 'female alienation', which originates from Karl Marx's theory of labour alienation, is developed by Alison Jaggar through feminist discussions of women's oppression and subordinate status. Women in a patriarchal society are alienated by men's power and separated from their self and nature; this leads to their loss of subjectivity and independence. Jaggar believes that women are alienated in all aspects of their lives, particularly in their sexuality, motherhood, and intellectual capacities, and this project discusses the influence of race and self-Orientalization on that alienation. Indeed, it enriches Jaggar's concept of female alienation by adding sisterhood alienation. A new classification is then proposed to study different patterns of alienation and women's psychological experiences with it, both active and passive, as reflected in Tan's works and the Chinese translations of those works. In terms of translation studies, this project combines translation equivalence and norms theories with feminist translation theory; it proposes a set of feminist translation norms and a concept of feminist translation equivalence to study feminist translation in the Chinese context. Feminist translation norms include feminist preliminary, expectancy, operational, accountability, communication, and relation norms. It is the feminist preliminary and expectancy norms that are used to analyse the translators' motives, intentions, and expectations of their translation. The feminist operational norm is used to analyse the translation strategies adopted by the translators. The feminist accountability norm refers to feminist translation ethics of fidelity; that is, the translation must be faithful to the writer's, or the translator's, own feminist consciousness, thoughts, and intentions. The feminist communication norm means that translations convey the writer's, or translator's, own feminist thoughts to the maximum possible extent. The feminist relation norm means that the relationship between the translation and the source text is the feminist translation equivalence, which means that the feminist thoughts reflected by the words or expressions in the source text, or by the translators' own feminist thoughts, are "faithfully" represented in the translation, even if the translator does not use the precisely equivalent words or expressions to achieve linguistic equivalence. Comparing the Chinese translations in order to study the translators' translation behaviours and the effects of their translations, this project explores how the feminist consciousness and thoughts on female alienation of the source text are represented in the Chinese translations, and in what way the translations achieve (feminist) translation equivalence. Summarising the regularities of the translation behaviour of the translator subgroups, and the (feminist) translation equivalence the translations achieve, this project provides evidence that the feminist translation ethics of fidelity do not necessarily contradict the traditional translation ethics of fidelity which focuses on linguistic equivalence. Meanwhile, it also verifies that so-called "feminist translation strategies" actually refer to all translation strategies which help the translations achieve feminist translation equivalence. This corrects the research misconception concerning feminist translation strategies in mainland China. Finally, by examining the translators' motives and expectations, reflected in their paratexts as well as in the translations, this project summarises feminist translation norms in the Chinese context, and defines the role of gender in translating female alienation in the texts in question.

Abstract:

The poem Bēowulf has been translated hundreds of times, in part or in whole. In past decades translators such as Howell Chickering and E. Talbot Donaldson firmly adhered to formal equivalency, following the original text line-by-line if not word-by-word. Such translations are useful for Anglo-Saxon students but cannot reach a larger audience because they are unwieldy and often incomprehensible. In the past fifty years, though, a group of translators with different philosophies has taken up the task of translating the poem with greater success. Translators such as Marc Hudson, Edwin Morgan, and Seamus Heaney used dynamic equivalency for their versions, eschewing strict grammatical accuracy and literal diction in order to recreate the sense and experience of the poem for a modern audience. How two translators, E. Talbot Donaldson and Seamus Heaney, treat the queens in the poem as revealed by a close textual analysis proves to be an excellent example of the two methodologies; formal equivalence translators do not endow their female characters with the agency and respect present in the original text, while dynamic equivalence translators take liberties with the language to give their readers a strong sense of the powerful but tragic queen figures. Harold Bloom’s theory of the development of poets in The Anxiety of Influence can help explain this shift from formal equivalency to dynamic equivalency. Translators of Bēowulf necessarily react against their predecessors, and since translators usually explain their process and philosophy in forwards or introductions, their motivations for “swerving away” are clear. Formal equivalence translators misrepresented the original text by devaluing the literary merit of the original poem and dynamic equivalence translators seek to remedy the misrepresentation by elaborating and expanding the language of the original to reach a wider audience. Each generation must continue to translate against the grain of its predecessors in order to keep the poem alive for a larger audience so that the poem will continue to be enjoyed by future audiences.

Resumo: A tese, ancorada na perspectiva da Análise do Discurso, em interface com a Desconstrução, investiga e discute a presença de tradução de gênero no contexto brasileiro e as representações de tradução de gênero que emergem no dizer de tradutoras brasileiras. Recortes discursivos selecionados, a partir das respostas de 21 (vinte e uma) tradutoras brasileiras a um questionário de 5 (cinco) perguntas, enviado por e-mail para duas listas de tradução que circulam no Brasil, foram analisados, buscando na materialidade linguística e nas formações inconscientes que nela irrompem, indícios da constituição do imaginário dessas tradutoras sobre tradução de gênero. O pressuposto que sustenta a investigação defende que já há uma prática de tradução de gênero no contexto quebeco-canadense, desde a década de 1970, cuja relação vem sendo discutida e problematizada, sem conflitos. O estudo que empreendemos para compor a fundamentação teórica pautou-se, inicialmente, no interesse de problematizar o encontro entre o feminismo e a tradução, discutindo como a tradução de certos grupos feministas serviu de agenda política para, de alguma forma, subverter a inferioridade sofrida pelas mulheres na escrita tradutora. A análise aponta para os seguintes resultados: há ainda muita resistência quanto à relação gênero e tradução, pelo menos, no que se refere à discursivização sobre o assunto, no Brasil, já que a temática evocou relações com os múltiplos feminismos da história e tudo o que isso simbolicamente representa, incluindo as lutas nele travadas, as resistências aos radicalismos do feminismo inicial e aos rótulos e estereótipos a ele vinculados. Daí que as representações de tradução de gênero que emergem do dizer ou ressoam sentidos de luta social, ou se fixam no domínio técnico da língua ou são imaginarizadas como expressão de criatividade e autoria, mesclando-se para instituir momentos de identificação aliados à singularidade das tradutoras. As tradutoras, quando falam sobre o seu fazer tradutório, defendem o emprego de uma linguagem inclusiva de gênero, por meio de interferências nos textos considerados por elas "machistas", todavia tais interferências ainda parecem estar muito presas ao nível da linguagem. Considerando-se os limites dos registros do corpus da pesquisa, a hipótese de que há vestígios de tradução de gênero no dizer sobre/na prática tradutória de tradutoras brasileiras na atualidade mostrou-se válida, pois não só há vestígios de tradução de gênero no dizer sobre tradução, como também emergiram nos dizeres efeitos de sentido que apontam para uma constituição identitária das tradutoras já inseridas no contexto de um emprego de uma linguagem mais inclusiva nas traduções por elas praticadas.
Abstract: The research anchored in the perspective of Discourse Analysis in the interface with Deconstruction investigates and discusses the presence of gender translation in Brazilian context as well as the representations of gender translation which emerge from the utterances of Brazilian female translators1. The discursive events selected from twenty one female translators' answers to five question sent by e-mail to translator lists (Tradinfo and Litterati) were analyzed, trying to identify through linguistic materiality, elements involved in the constitution of the imaginary of those female translators about gender translation as well as fragments of their unconscious formations, which can reveal some aspects of their subjectivity. The basic assumption of this research is that there has been a gender translation practice in Quebec-Canada context since 1970's where translation and gender has been discussed and practiced normally. The readings and researches we made to support our theoretic foundation were ruled by the interest of problematizing the encounter between translation and feminism, in order to discuss how the translation of some feminist groups has served as a political agenda for subverting the female inferiority by means of translation writing. The results of the analysis points to the fact that there is still so much resistances about the relationship between gender and translation in Brazil, at least as regards to the discursivization process of the theme, since gender translation has evoked relationships with the different feminisms of history and with everything they symbolically have represented, including the struggles and the resistances against radicalisms of the initial feminisms besides the labels and stereotypes connected to them. Thus the representations of gender translation which emerge from the female translators' utterances remit either to the social struggles of feminisms, circulating around the technical dominion of language or they are represented as expression of creativity and authorship. So those representations interweave for constituting identification moments which relate to female translators' singularity. By speaking about their translation itself, the female translators defend the use of a gender inclusive language through interferences on the texts considered by them as "machist text". Considering the limits of the corpus the hypothesis that there are vestiges of gender translation in the Brazilian female translators' utterances is confirmed, since there are no only vestiges as well as the meaning effects which emerged from the utterances point to a female translator who has already been using a more inclusive language in her translations.

Abstract:
Power-control theory provides one of most comprehensive theoretical explorations of the gender gap in delinquency to date. The theory posits that the relative power of husbands and wives in the workplace translates directly into their relative power within the home. Household power relations, in turn, are played out in the relative control of sons and daughters, influencing ultimately the gender gap in delinquency through social psychological processes of familial control and socialization toward risk. This paper reformulates power-control theory in two important ways. First, it borrows from the family and gender literature on status-reversal and single mother households to critique the simplistic discussion of the translation of gendered power relations from workplaces to households. In doing so, the paper specifies an alternative discussion of power relations and family structures. Second, the paper draws upon criminological research and theorizing on gender and delinquency to posit a more thorough discussion of the social psychological mechanisms linking gendered power differentials to the gender gap in delinquency. Thus, the paper presents a reformulation of power-control theory that reconsiders both structural-level power differentials between mothers and fathers and individual-level processes of control and socialization of sons and daughters. From this reformulation, I derive and test hypotheses using a nationally representative sample of youths. The results suggest that further consideration of how power translates from workplaces to households is necessary and also provide some support for recent theorizing about gender differences in the social psychological mechanisms leading to the gender gap in delinquency.

This thesis compares style in the ‘Todesarten’ [literally: manners of death] texts by Austrian author Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973) with their English translations: the novel Malina (Malina; Philip Boehm), the novel draft Das Buch Franza (The Book of Franza; Peter Filkins) and the story collection Simultan (Three Paths to the Lake; Mary Fran Gilbert). The fact that Bachmann was a woman significantly influenced the descriptions by German-language critics in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s of the author herself, as well as their evaluations of her work. Bachmann’s extended metaphors, ambiguity, iconicity, transitivity structures and intertextuality suggest that her prose texts, and especially Malina, should be regarded as proto-feminist masterpieces whose contemplation of the post-war human condition and society’s treatment of women were far ahead of their contemporaries. Boehm’s and Filkins’ translation choices show parallels with criticism expressed in German-language reviews. The reduction of the networks of stylistic features in the translations results in a weakening of the links between content, style and politics which are crucial to Bachmann’s texts. These changes mean that the English-language reader experiences Bachmann’s texts in a fundamentally different way. The male translators largely silence what I term women’s language in Malina and Franza, and consequently conceal much of Bachmann’s proto-feminist message. It is clear that these changes are not necessitated by the constraints of translating Bachmann’s complex texts into English because Gilbert, the female translator of Simultan, manages to recreate the texts’ style.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of poetics and ideology on the French translations of eight contemporary heroine-centred and women-oriented fictional texts (including Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary). Using a systemic and descriptive framework (Toury 1995) as well as works on manipulation in translation (Lefevere 1992)(Venuti 1998), I explore the various ways in which these generically hybrid and ideologically complex texts have been rewritten according to the dominant poetics and ideology of the French roman sentimental. Interviews undertaken with editors and translators identify the perceived appeal of these texts to the French market: their romantic plot. As a comparative analysis of originals and translations reveals, this resulted in specific translational strategies regarding gender representations, notably poetological elements subverting a dominant model of romantic femininity. This thesis sheds light on the subtle differences between French and Anglo-American generic traditions and gender ideologies and its contribution is three-fold. Firstly, it adds to an emerging body of case studies which examine poetological and ideological revisions in the French translations of heroine-centred and womenoriented fictional texts (Cossy 2004, 2006, 2006a)(Le Brun 2003). Secondly, as the selection of a thematically – rather than formally – linked corpus of texts is still relatively uncommon in translation and intercultural studies, this thesis advances a new paradigm in the analysis of poetics and ideology in translation (Munday 2008): a self-reflexive approach which favours transversal examinations of specific aspects in thematically linked corpora. Thirdly, this study suggests that if women’s entertainment, produced and translated for mass consumption, reaches a broad audience worldwide and plays an important part in women’s socialisation, interdisciplinary studies of translations across forms can constitute a useful way of detecting the unspoken gender values of the cultures for which and by which they are produced.

This essay will investigate the cause of shifts – changes made when translating – in the Swedish version of Enid Blyton‟s Five on a Treasure Island. It should be seen as a direct sequel to The Little Girl is Missing – a bachelor degree project written at Stockholm University. In said degree project the methods used when making the shifts was described, but now the reasons why the shifts were made and how they have affected the plot will be presented. To do so a number of theories concerning both gender studies and translation studies will be used. The working hypothesis is that the shifts were made to rid the translated text of the original text‟s sexist content – to create "equality between women and men" (Lpo 94: 3) and making the translation fit the target culture i.e. today‟s Sweden. This claimed sexist content will be determined mainly with the help of the Swedish compulsory school system‟s curriculum, Lpo94, and Berit Ås‟s master suppression techniques. The intention is to bring the translation phenomenon of ideologically influenced translations into the limelight and start a debate. Besides that, this essay will also provide a didactic model for teachers wanting to work with translation dilemmas in class.

Il presente elaborato si propone di studiare un corpus di estratti di romanzi originali italiani e tradotti dall’inglese e dal francese provenienti dalla collana per ragazze/i Ex Libris del Gruppo EL. La letteratura per ragazze/i è oggi un caso editoriale e gioca un ruolo fondamentale nella crescita dei/lle giovani lettori/trici. Tuttavia, può anche promuovere rappresentazioni di genere stereotipate. Lo studio qui presentato mira a individuare fenomeni linguistici problematici in prospettiva di genere e a descriverne l'evoluzione diacronica. Nel primo capitolo presenteremo la letteratura per l’infanzia, l’ambito in cui la sezione per ragazze/i nasce e si sviluppa, con un focus sul contesto italiano. Successivamente, presenteremo le riflessioni femministe sul sessismo dei modelli educativi e della lingua dei prodotti culturali per l’infanzia. Offriremo poi una panoramica del mercato editoriale per l’infanzia, descrivendo le realtà più innovative nell’ambito della promozione della parità di genere. Nel secondo capitolo ci occuperemo della trattazione storica e teorica dei Translation Studies, con un focus sul Cultural turn, che ha portato all’emergere della teoria femminista della traduzione. Seguirà un terzo capitolo sulle caratteristiche e le problematiche della traduzione della letteratura per l’infanzia, con un approfondimento sulle sue affinità con la traduzione femminista. Nel quarto capitolo tratteremo il fruttuoso rapporto tra Corpus Linguistics, studi letterari e stilistici e Translation Studies. Nel quinto capitolo verrà presentata la collana oggetto di studio e si evidenzierà la sua somiglianza con la collana francese Page Blanche di Éditions Gallimard, che verrà contestualizzata in ottica sociologica. Il sesto capitolo è dedicato, infine, alla costruzione del corpus e allo studio empirico della collana Ex Libris, che si concentrerà sullo studio dei lemmi che identificano le figure genitoriali, personaggi centrali nella produzione per ragazze/i.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a critical edition of the longest extant version of the medieval Irish text Tochmarc Ferbe ('The Wooing of Ferb'), accompanied by translation, textual notes and literary commentary. Tochmarc Ferbe is found in two manuscripts, the Book of Leinster (LL) and Egerton 1782. This comprises three versions of the text: a short prose account in Egerton 1782, and a long prosimetric account in LL, followed in the same manuscript by a poetic account. After a preliminary analysis of the relationship between these three versions, the edited text of the long prosimetric version (LL-prose) is presented, alongside a facing-page translation. Issues arising from the text, in terms of interpretational difficulties, literary features and metrical analysis of the poems, are discussed in the form of textual notes. A particular focus is the prevalence of textual correspondences between Tochmarc Ferbe and other medieval Irish tales, many of which are identified as direct textual borrowings by the author of this text. The thesis concludes with a literary commentary focusing on the role of women in the LL-prose version. It is argued that its depictions of a wide range of female characters challenge traditional assumptions about medieval Irish attitudes towards women, which tend to focus on their supposed passivity and negativity. The portrayals of two female characters are singled out as especially noteworthy. Queen Medb, frequently viewed as the archetypal expression of negative attitudes towards power-wielding women in medieval Irish literature, is shown to receive a positive depiction in this text. Meanwhile, the main female protagonist Ferb is characterised by her use of speech, which dominates the text in a manner almost unparalleled in medieval Irish literature. It is argued that she subverts the usually passive role of lamenter by channelling her grief into an active force, offering an alternative model of positive female action.

Aim: During the transition into adulthood, emerging adulthood is characterised by continuous identity negotiations. However, for young people with learning disabilities (LD) the LD identity may overshadow the development of other important identities (Burns, 1993; 2000). The effect of the LD identity on how young people negotiate and understand sexual and gender identities during this key developmental stage requires further exploration (Beart, Hardy, & Buchan, 2005). This study conducted an in-depth exploration of young people and their carers' experiences of understanding and negotiating the development of sexual and gender identity alongside the LD identity. Methods: Four young people with LD and four of their carers were interviewed. The data were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results: Three master themes emerged concerning young people and their carers' struggle for an 'as normal as possible' adult identity; struggle to develop sexual identity as a 'normal' identity; and struggle to develop gender identity as a 'normal' identity, in the context of the overshadowing LD identity. Conclusions: Despite young people's position that they should be enabled to develop sexual and gender identities as part of their transition to adulthood, they faced many obstacles, including stigma related to their LD. Carers described their challenges in proactively supporting sexual and gender identity education and exploration, due to concerns about risk. Equality and protection need 110t be either/or priorities. Initiatives to support young people to explore their sexuality safely require funding and service. support to extend the work they do (Denny, 2013; lones, 2011). There remains need for considerable change in UK practice and policy if the principles of rights, independence, choice and inclusion espoused in Valuing People and Valuing People Now (Department of Health, 2001; 2009) are to be met in relation sexual and gender identity development in people with LD as they transition to adulthood.

Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials has caused controversy as well as enjoyed great popularity among readers worldwide. Its influence has created a great impact in the field of children’s literature. The purpose of this thesis is two-fold. Firstly, the thesis analyzes gender representations in Pullman’s trilogy in the context of how he rewrites female archetypes through the subversive re-inscription of Eve, the invention of daemons, the reinvention of ‘femme fatale’, and the new portrayal of Gypsy women. Secondly, the thesis aims at comparing and examining how gender representations in the source text are translated, transformed or / and manipulated in its Chinese translation. With reference to Chinese gender ideology, which includes the Chinese concept of the ying-yang polarities, Buddhist notions of gender, the notion of the femme fatale, and the stereotypical image of Chinese grannies, the syntactic and semantic alterations made by the Chinese translator are investigated. Issues regarding how Chinese gender views may influence and alter the translation product are discussed in detail. By studying the similarities and differences in gender representations between the texts, the thesis attempts to shed light on the gender ideology of both English and Chinese contemporary cultures.

Displacing the Mask: Jorge Luis Borges and the Translation of Narrative studies the transformations that occur in Jorge Luis Borges's translations of Anglo-American fiction into Spanish. This project argues that Borges inscribed his tastes, values, and judgments about the literature he was translating onto the target-language texts, and in doing so altered important aspects of the source-language narratives: the identities of their characters, the ethical and rhetorical positioning of their narrators, their plots, and even the genres to which those narratives belong. The dissertation focuses on Borges's four book-length translations from the English, A Room of One's Own (1929, translated 1936) and Orlando (1928, translated 1937) by Virginia Woolf, The Wild Palms (1939, translated 1940) by William Faulkner and Bartleby (1853, translated 1943) by Herman Melville, as well as Borges's translation fragment of "Penelope" from James Joyce's Ulysses (1922, translated 1925). There are two major influences that guide the transformations this project explores, one aesthetic and one ideological. The aesthetic motivation is Borges's preference for plot-driven over character-driven fiction, which culminates in a strong distaste for what he terms "psychological narrative." Borges preferred adventure novels and detective fiction; correspondingly, wherever possible, he made changes to the form and content of the novels he translated to move them closer to the action-centered, personality-effacing fiction he preferred. The primary ideological influence I have found is a heteronormative understanding of gender and sexuality, which gives way to polarized representations of masculinity and femininity. In almost every translation, Borges pushes back against non-normative representations of gender and sexuality, reorienting characters toward traditional gender stereotypes. These two motivations, gender and genre, show themselves to be intertwined in Borges's translation practice; removing or rewriting the psychological aspects of narrative texts frequently comes about by shifting the gender and sexuality of a text's characters and the ideological positioning of its author. By focusing on a substantial subset of his translation work--Anglo-American fiction--this project fills a gap in the scholarship on Borges and translation, which to date has only selectively analyzed isolated texts. It also affords scholars of Borges's writing style access to perspectives previously unavailable, by demonstrating what his transformations to source texts' styles say about his own. A scholarly intention of this dissertation is also to demonstrate the relevance of translation to a number of academic fields, including narratology, women's studies, sexuality studies, and comparative literature. Comparative translation analyses reveal cultural representations of gender, ideological positions on sexuality, and radical reformulations of texts' narrative communication situations, all of which open important new avenues these disciplines may follow. At the same time, this project encourages the linguistics-based and empirically oriented branches of translation studies to employ comparative translation analysis not only to study translation itself, but as a basis for the critical analysis of translated literature.

After a brief introduction to the gaming industry and the gaming localization industry, and a glimpse of the gender representation issue that in some ways persists to this day in the videogame world, this dissertation considers as its object of inquiry the Italian localization of the acclaimed Tomb Raider saga. Its main aim is to scrutinize the evolution of the titles’ main character, Lara Croft, with the objective of pinning down the gender-related issues that arise in the translation from English into Italian. Since the videogame industry has been marred for decades by what could be considered a serious issue with gender representation, this dissertation highlights the elements of game localization that can be taken into consideration to mitigate this issue. Through a discussion of the topics of fidelity and culturalization, it is argued that by following the disruptive and revolutionary principles theorized by the feminist scholars that started Gender Translation Studies, the translator could contribute to reduce the discriminatory and sexist content that the analysis shows could be, even inadvertently, introduced during the translation process. To this end, the global intent of fidelity towards the translation project and the translator-client relationship would still be maintained, but the translator would be given greater liberty to commit to choices as dictated by a newfound sensitivity towards gender-related issues, with the ever-present assurance that the look and feel of the final product would not be compromised in any way.

La presente tesi si pone come obiettivo quello di indagare il rapporto tra stereotipi di genere e traduzione automatica, proponendo uno studio di caso composto da frasi contenenti dei sostantivi riferiti a professioni tradotti automaticamente dall’inglese all’italiano. Il capitolo I offre una panoramica teorica sulla traduzione automatica, per poi approfondire il tema degli stereotipi di genere nella traduzione automatica. Il capitolo II si concentra invece sul rapporto tra genere e lingua, partendo dalla definizione di stereotipi e pregiudizi per passare poi alla questione dei femminili professionali. Vengono delineati gli aspetti linguistici per poi fornire una breve panoramica delle iniziative che sono state proposte nel contesto italiano e internazionale per promuovere l’uso del genere femminile nella lingua ed evitare di usarla in maniera sessista e non inclusiva. Nel capitolo III, dopo aver esposto nel dettaglio la metodologia impiegata degli studi precedenti, si presenta la struttura frasale ideata per condurre lo studio di caso. Partendo dall’elaborazione dei dati statistici sul numero di donne per ogni occupazione, si giunge alla selezione delle professioni da impiegare nello studio. Vengono inoltre illustrati gli strumenti utilizzati nell’analisi basata su corpora che verrà condotta nel capitolo IV, dove si presenta l’analisi degli output forniti da due sistemi di traduzione automatica, DeepL e Google Translate, nella combinazione linguistica inglese-italiano. L’analisi dettagliata di tutti gli aspetti della struttura frasale è corredata da tabelle e grafici esplicativi, inoltre sono presenti approfondimenti sulle traduzioni di alcune professioni di particolare rilevanza. This study analyzes the representation of trans* individuals in Tales of the City (2019) by comparing source text subtitling and dubbing. Specifically, the characters Jake, Michael, Ida Best and Shawna. For the analysis, tool were extracted from the theories of gender, sexuality, queer, trans*, and others, and the techniques of content analysis and textual contrastive analysis were used. This thesis explores how translators’ gender affects their reading and interpretation of foreign children’s literature, particularly from source texts by British male authors to target texts by Taiwanese female translators. It argues that masculine voices characteristic of British texts and Chinese translations from the early twentieth century have been changed both by modern liberal authors and regulated by emerging female translators working with female editors. The study examines ways in which translators reproduce social and gender norms from both the source and the target cultures. It also investigates how gender identity affects translators’ use of language and their attitudes toward the target texts of different groups of readers. The thesis provides historical background and an overview of the children’s publishing business and infrastructure in Taiwan before discussing polysystem theory and feminist criticism in relation to translation. It uses a combination of close reading and comparative analysis across a large sample of texts to identify instances where gender appears to have affected the translation. The analysis begins with classics – such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) – that have been translated both by male and female translators. It then considers a selection of contemporary novels, most translated by women, as usual for translations of children’s books in Taiwan. Finally, a number of translated picturebooks are analyzed, revealing a set of highly feminized translation practices related to equally feminine paratexts. This thesis draws critically on approaches to globalisation, translation and advertising to analyse current translation practices using multimodal advertising texts. The purpose of this study is both to show evidence of the need to approach advertising translation from an interdisciplinary and intersemiotic perspective, and to remark on the need to incorporate such an approach into translation training and practice. It is developed in the broader context of globalisation and its impacts on socio-economic changes and cultural interaction worldwide. The intensification of global communications together with technological advances enhance the steady flow of knowledge and information, whilst at the same time there is a tendency to accentuate commonalities between cultures, clearly illustrated by standardised strategies used in global advertising campaigns. However, one key obstacle in the spread of standardised messages is language diversity, something that has caused translation to gain an active role in global advertising since it facilitates dialogue between global companies and international consumers; thus, translation has not only become an activity that overcomes linguistic and cultural barriers but also a commercial tool. This thesis focuses on the translation of advertisements as an intentional communication act that involves a team process into which translation may be integrated. Translation encompasses concepts that go beyond linguistic matters such as contextual issues and extralinguistic communication sign systems. The translation of advertisements is a growing area of study, with current research mainly limited to the study of linguistic matters. Consequently, in order to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of multimodal translations (text and images in this study) in a professional context, this research incorporates concepts and knowledge from visual analysis and advertising. This thesis suggests a multimodal method of analysis consisting of different phases integrating visual analysis as a part of the translation process. The 2 proposed methodology is illustrated by a corpus of Spanish-English pairs of standardised print advertisements from the beauty and cosmetics sector. The conclusion is that it is vital to consider the extralinguistic aspects surrounding a multimodal text from both a descriptive and critical perspective in order to read connotative information from words, images and the text-image unit. Translation training might also benefit from including this multimodal approach and further collaborative work must be done between translators and marketers to better understand and consolidate the role of translation in this area.

I denna uppsats undersöks om, och i så fall hur, man översätter könsneutralt på Europaparlamentet. Man kan översätta könsneutralt genom att till exempel skriva han eller hon, använda passiv eller plural. För att kunna undersöka hur man översätter könsneutralt, redogörs för vad genus och könsneutralt språk är, vilken roll genus spelar för denna typ av översättning, vilka olika genusaspekter som är viktiga för tyska och svenska, och terminologiska aspekter. Den teoretiska utgångspunkten bygger på feministisk lingvistisk och översättningsteoretisk litteratur som Simon, Thüne och Leonardi, Jobin och von Flotow. Material och metod baseras på interna dokument som Europaparlamentet gett ut. Jag har använt mig av Europaparlamentets arbetsordning som material och två rekommendationshäften om könsneutralt språk i Europaparlamentet som utgångspunkt. Därutöver gjorde jag intervjuer med två tyska och två svenska översättare på Europaparlamentet i Luxemburg. Resultaten visar att alla rekommendationer om könsneutralt språk faktiskt inte används, utan att man har valt olika strategier på tyska och svenska. I båda språken används passiv form och plural, medan användningen av pronomen skiljer sig mycket mellan de båda språken. Vidare ansågs omskrivning med substantivering som mycket tveksam och förekom inte heller i arbetsordningsanalysen. Det som undersöktes var adjektivböjningen och användningen av pronomen vad gäller funktionsbeteckningar i Europaparlamentets arbetsordning. Det visade sig vara lättare att översätta könsneutralt på svenska än på tyska. Han eller hon används inte på tyska, inte heller den så kallade Binnen-I med vilkens hjälp man kan markera båda könen på tyska. Sammanfattningsvis kan man säga att översättarna, med hjälp av rekommendationerna i de ovan nämnda häftena och sin egen språkkänsla försöker att formulera sina översättningar könsneutralt, och att könsneutralt språk i stort sett också återspeglas i Europaparlamentets arbetsordning.
This thesis is an empirical study on gender neutral translation at the European Parliament. In order to translate gender neutraly, the translator can write he or she, use passive-constructions or plural. In order to be able to analyze how a translator translates gender neutraly, I will first present how gender and gender neutral language is defined, how gender affects translation, which aspects are of importance for Swedish and German, as well as terminological aspects. The theoretical background is based on feminist linguistic and translation theory such as Simon, Thüne and Leonardi, Jobin and von Flotow. The research material and method are based on internal documents of the European Parliament, videlicet the Rules of Procedure and a broschure on gender neutral language. In addition, I interviewed translators of the European Parliament in Luxembourg, two of them being German and two of them being Swedish. It can be said that not all of the given recommendations for gender neutral language are used and that the usage differs in German and Swedish. Recommendations such as passive-constructions and plural are applied in both languages, while nominalization was considered to be questionable. Furthermore, the usage of functions, pronouns and adjectives in the Rules of Procedure was analyzed. In Swedish translations, the use of he and she is quite common, while it is not recommended for German, nor is the usage of Binnen-I for that matter. Summing up, it can be said that it is easier to translate and write gender neutraly in Swedish as in German and that all translators pay attention to the given recommendations and translate as gender neutral as possible, which is also reflected in the translation of the Rules of Procedure.

Perfect Blue is an anime (Japanese animation) film directed by Kon Satoshi released in 1997. The film revolves around a female idol (a pop star) named Mima who quits her career as an idol to become an actress. She gradually loses her mind, as the pressures from her acting career, her managers, fans and a stalker catch up to her. Perfect Blue touches on the blurring line between fiction and reality, the objectification of women (and idols) as mere products, and the role of women in the idol industry. It is also a stark critique of the hegemonic masculinity and the gender roles that are imposed on women in Japanese society. This thesis presents anime as an important pop culture phenomenon with a massive influence worldwide. The thesis examines the gender stereotypes propagated by this phenomenon and proposes a that Kon’s work is different compared to other anime. This work compares how gender roles are portrayed in the different versions: The Japanese original and the US English subtitles and dubbing. Methodologically, the analysis relies on close observation of the use of the Japanese first and second person pronouns and sentence-final particles in the characters’ language, since “the use of these features is known to be highly gender-dependent” (Hiramoto 2013, 55). This study comes to the conclusion that the subtitles and the dubbing provide a relatively close rendering of gender of the Japanese text, even if the linguistic resources of English do not allow for the translation of gendered Japanese pronouns and sentence-final particles. This means that the subtitles and dubbings maintain the feminist message Kon wanted to give in his film. The study concludes by stressing the importance of taking into account the use of specific pronouns and sentence-final particles when translating Japanese, as these particles are gender-loaded. It also emphasises the importance of being critical of anime’s hegemonic masculinity, and argues that Kon goes against hegemony by portraying a strong and independent female character.

Abstract:
This research aims to understand self-translation as a postcolonial, social, political, cultural and linguistic phenomenon and it focuses on how it communicates a hybrid transcultural identity that not only challenges the monolingual literary canons and concepts of national homogeneous identities, but also subverts to patriarchal society. Thus, I understand self-translation as a mean of empowerment and contestation. The cases under study are Puerto Rican writers Rosario Ferré and Esmeralda Santiago, and their novels The House on the Lagoon and América’s Dream, written in English and translated into Spanish by the authors themselves. I believe that Rosario Ferré and Esmeralda Santiago are representative of a group of writers, artists and intellectuals who through their work originated from the island and from the U.S. Diaspora, have aimed to give voice to a Puerto Rican postcolonial hybrid identity that has been silenced until recently. Therefore, they disrupt the official national cultural and linguistic discourse about the Puerto Rican identity that has been weaved by the Spanish language in opposition to U.S. colonialist attempts of linguistic and cultural assimilation. This dissertation is located in the intersection between the fields of comparative literature, translation, cultural, gender and postcolonial studies. The question that guides this research is: Is self-translation in the case of Puerto Rico, a result of cultural hybridity in Puerto Rico’s postcolonial context?Therefore, this is a multidisciplinary research project that integrates elements from the humanities and the social sciences. Methodologically, it integrates qualitative and quantitative approaches. Hence, hybridity is embedded in this research not only because it discusses English and Spanish writing, but because it includes textual analysis, content analysis and statistical analysis. The main finding is the deep conection between socio-political context, language, culture, identity, power and translation that supports the idea that self-translation is a postcolonial act, which in the case of Puerto Rico is strongly related to hybridity as an everyday practice of identity affirmation.

The present doctoral thesis is an investigation into the underlying semiotic and socio-cultural connotations of gender shifts in literary translation from English into Arabic, thereby simultaneously addressing the research question of whether these shifts are norm-governed, optional, or obligatory, that is, dictated by the rules of Arabic. Drawing on research into translational shifts, descriptive approaches to translation, as well as semiotics and sociology, the research employs a comparative and analytical methodology, which is based mainly on van Leuven-Zwart’s shift model, for the analysis of the primary corpus which incorporates Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye and its two Arabic translations. It also utilizes a confirmatory corpus-based approach for the understanding of how norms and rules of gender are manifested in the Arabic literary tradition(s). Different patterns of shift are identified as regards the gender preferences or obligations on the part of the translator which contribute to his gender choices, which both demonstrate the problematic nature of gender relations in Arabic as well as highlight the translator’s active role in the act of translation. This project aims to make a useful contribution to existing research in the areas of descriptive translation studies and shifts analysis, as well as corpus-based approaches to translational shifts in general and gender shifts in particular. The analysis reveals the challenges facing translators when gender issues are concerned and suggests that gender shifts are more affected by norms and idiosyncrasies than grammatical rules.

The focus of this study is to compare works by the Canadian poet Dorothy Livesay (1909-1996) and by the Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad (1935-1967). Although Farrokhzad and Livesay were from different generations, their love poems emerged around the same time. Farrokhzad published her poems between 1955 and 1965, and Livesay's collection of love poemsThe Unquiet Bed was published in 1967. There are interesting similarities between the use of voice and theme in their love poems.The speakers in the poems try to keep their individuality and are looking for freedom in love, but often see love as disappointing. My discussion highlights Livesay's"The Touching,"The Taming," and"Consideration" as well as Farrokhzad's"The Sin,"Love Song," and"My Beloved." I also refer to many of their other love poems, discuss their biographies and map out their respective cultural contexts, all of which reflect different worlds. A comparison of Farrokhzad's and Livesay's personal lives shows that Livesay's father and her mother, who were both journalists, helped her to improve and publish her writings while Farrokhzad's parents discouraged their daughter from composing and publishing poems. Livesay was a highly educated woman who lived and studied in different countries, but Farrokhzad did not have access to advanced academic studies. Neither had happy marriages and both left their marriages in search of more freedom. Through their love poems, Farrokhzad and Livesay questioned the patriarchal conventions of their respective societies and tried to express their need for freedom and individuality as women. One of the most important differences between Iranian and Canadian societies was that Iranian society was deeply affected by conventional Islamic ideologies. Farrokhzad's love poems resisted these Islamic ideologies and, as a result, her works were ignored for years. Again, at the time Livesay publishedThe Unquiet Bed (1967), there were some similarities between gender constructions in Iran and Canada, for example, the importance of marriage and the confinement of women to the private sphere, but to a very different degree. Since Livesay lived in a society that was being greatly affected by the feminist revolution in the 1960's, the feminism in her love poems was better received. As this research is done in English, translated versions of Farrokhzad's poems are used. A translated poem never conveys the exact meaning of the original poem.The translator of a poem should be a poet herself or himself. What he or she should do is to read and understand the original poem and reproduce a new poem in the target language. This research discusses some interesting images in Farrokhzad's love poems. As a native speaker of Farsi, I explain the real intention of these images to see if translated versions could convey a similar meaning. I also consider the challenges when translating poetry from Farsi to English and the effects of reading Iranian poetry that has been mediated by translation. An important approach to Farrokhzad's and Livesay's works is to analyze their poems in terms of feminist ideologies. There is a great difference between Iranian and Canadian feminist ideologies. Feminist thought in Iran is based on Islamic ideologies.The question is if Islamic feminism can defend women's rights against men or not. Farrokhzad was one of the anti-Islamic feminists who opposed Islamic rule in her poems. Canadian feminist ideologies, however, are divided into liberal, Marxist, radical, and French schools, and are most often based on secular ideologies. This thesis examines the critical reception of poetry by both poets in the context of different schools of feminist thought in Canada and Iran. Livesay traveled to Zambia later in life and one of the love poems she wrote after that called"The Taming" comments ironically on women's submission to a dominant male lover.The comparison of poems by two authors from different worlds shows how their love poems, their feminist voice, and their themes of freedom, independence, and disappointment in love are rooted in the cultural context of their lives.

Diese Studie erkundet den Zusammenhang von Gender und Bilderpraktiken in Sanaa vor dem Hintergrund der globalen Zirkulation von Bildern. Von Geschlechtersegregation gekennzeichnet und an der Peripherie globaler Bilderproduktion liegend, bietet sich der Jemen für die Erforschung des Spannungsfelds von Bildern und Gender an. Betrachtet wird insbesondere, wie Jemenitinnen öffentliche Bilder entschleierter Frauen auf eigene Vorstellungen von Sittsamkeit und Unsichtbarkeit beziehen und wie öffentliches Erscheinen von Frauen verhandelt wird. Ein filmischer Zugang führt zur Betrachtung der performativen Dimension von Bildern. Gefilmte Mikrosituationen werden nach einem hermeneutischen Verfahren interpretiert, das sich am Prozess-, Interaktions- und Diskursverlauf der gefilmten sozialen Praxis orientiert. Sprache wird kontextualisiert und zu Bildern in Bezug gesetzt. Befunde zur Rolle des Umgangs mit Bildern bei der Geschlechterkonstitution offenbaren drei zentrale Themen. Erstens sind Bilderpraktiken von Frauen dynamische und konflikthafte Prozesse, in denen Frauen genderspezifische Räume und Rollen aushandeln. So werden beispielsweise jemenitische Frauen, die im Fernsehen erscheinen, dem Anderen zugeordnet, visuelle Elemente öffentlicher Bilder von Frauen werden heruntergespielt. Drittens folgt die Suche jemenitischer Frauen nach dem eigenen Bild einer Dialektik von Sichtbarkeit und Unsichtbarkeit, denn oft erreichen Frauen öffentliche Sichtbarkeit durch die Repräsentation von Unsichtbarkeit. Diese Ergebnisse verdeutlichen die Notwendigkeit performativer Ansätze bei der Erforschung von Bildern und Medienpraxen.
This ethnographic study explores the intersection of gender and image usage in Sanaa, Yemen, against the background of the global circulation of images. Yemen is a gender-segregated society at the periphery of image production and provides a powerful context in which the phenomena of this intersectionality can be captured and analyzed. Of particular relevance is the means by which Yemeni women relate public images of unveiled women to their requirement of modesty in front of men outside their close families. Within this setting, the negotiation of women’s public appearance is studied. A filmic approach leads to a consideration of the performative dimensions of images. Filmed micro-situations are interpreted according to a hermeneutic method, informed by the procedural, interactive and discursive aspects of social practice. Using this methodology, spoken language is contextualized and related to image practices. Findings on the role of image practices in gender constitution concern three main themes. First, image practices are found to be dynamic and conflictual as gender-specific social spaces and roles are negotiated. For example, Yemeni women who appear on TV are often attributed to the Other, and on the level of language, visual elements of public images of women are downplayed. Second, images pose challenges for gender segregation. As prohibitions on women allowing themselves to be seen in person extend to their images, the subversive and transgressive potential of image practices become apparent. Interestingly, this reveals that some prohibitions on images in the Islamic context discussed by previous researchers are in fact gendered restrictions on looking at women. Finally, the search of Yemeni women for an image of self follows a dialectic between visibility and invisibility. Often those women who reach public visibility do so by representing invisibility. This work demonstrates the need for performative approaches to the study of images and media practices.

The aim of this dissertation is to propose a translation into Italian of two American picturebooks: Is That For a Boy or a Girl? written by S. Bear Bergman and illustrated by Rachel Dougherty, and Jacob's New Dress written by Sarah and Ian Hoffman and illustrated by Chris Case. The common thread of the two books is the critique of gender stereotypes in children’s literature and in other aspects of childhood at large, such as gender expression. The two titles were in fact selected from the bibliography created by the European project G-BOOK (Gender Identity: Child Readers and Library Collections), which was spearheaded by Centro MeTRa, an Italian research centre affiliated with the University of Bologna which aims to promote gender-positive and inclusive literature. The thesis is divided into four chapters, the first of which is devoted to a discussion of children's literature as a whole and to the analysis of the illustrated fiction subgenre, the category to which the above-mentioned volumes belong. The second chapter focuses on diversity, highlighting its key role in education and the relevant trends in publishing and translation studies. The third chapter consists of a brief presentation of the works I have chosen. Following the introduction of the plot and the biography of the authors, the chapter focuses on the analysis of the two illustrated books from a linguistic, stylistic, iconographic and commercial point of view, in preparation for translation. Finally, in the fourth chapter I present my translation proposal, complete with a commentary on the problems I encountered and the translation techniques that allowed me to overcome them.

This thesis studies elite men and women’s uses of Greek classical and early Christian texts in order to provide a more nuanced view of the relationship between knowledge of Greek language and the religious controversy between Catholics and Protestants in the English Reformation from 1516 to 1558. It addresses some of the misconceptions of Greek and its connection to Protestant heresy during the Reformation, while also explaining the ways that men and women used Greek in developing and maintaining individual religious identities in sixteenth century England. This research illuminates the ways that Greek literature, reborn in Early Modern European society, influenced Protestant and Catholic educated men and women as they sought to exhibit dignity in the face of religious persecution.

Le but de cette thèse est de comprendre pourquoi la poésie d’Adrienne Rich (1929-2012), autrice étatsunienne majeure, est absente du champ littéraire français. Poétesse prolifique, Adrienne Rich reçut de nombreux prix littéraires tout au long de sa carrière. Essayiste, elle fut une théoricienne du mouvement féministe étatsunien. Des recueils de ses poèmes ont été publiés dans une vingtaine de langues dans le monde. En français, une quinzaine de poèmes d’Adrienne Rich a été traduite et publiée sur divers supports (anthologies, revues littéraires, blogs). Un recueil a été conçu en collaboration avec la poétesse, mais il n’a jamais été publié à ce jour. Malgré différentes tentatives pour accueillir la poésie d’Adrienne Rich en France (traduction de ses essais, inscription au programme de l’agrégation, lecture en librairie) elle est toujours en 2019 dans une situation ambiguë de présence mais d’invisibilité pour le lectorat français. Nous chercherons donc à expliquer cette réception en suspens en examinant d’abord les traductions de poèmes d’Adrienne Rich publiés en français. Qui en sont les auteurs et autrices ? Quelles sont leurs pratiques et les caractéristiques de leurs traductions ? Leurs travaux s’inscrivent dans le sous-champ éditorial de la poésie traduite en France qui sera analysé pour en identifier les dynamiques, les acteurs et actrices, les supports de diffusion. À la lumière de ces analyses qui relèvent de la sociologie de la traduction et de la réception, nous comparerons le cas de la poésie d’Adrienne Rich avec d’autres poètes mais surtout d’autres poétesses étatsuniennes contemporaines. Dans ce contexte de réception, il faut aussi prendre en compte l’histoire des idées. En effet, l’œuvre d’Adrienne Rich est marquée par l’engagement féministe de l’autrice, ce qui représente une caractéristique significative pour le transfert culturel que constitue la traduction. Nous nous intéresserons donc à l’histoire des mouvements mais aussi des courants de pensée féministes aux États-Unis et en France depuis les années 1960. Enfin, dans une démarche prospective, ce travail se propose d’envisager les modalités de conception d’un recueil de poèmes d’Adrienne Rich traduits en français à l’aune de l’analyse du champ éditorial de la poésie en France et d’une lecture microtextuelle des poèmes déjà traduits. Nous illustrerons cette réflexion par des traductions ou retraductions de quelques textes : comment traduire une poésie féministe ?
The aim of this thesis is to understand why the poetry of Adrienne Rich (1929-2012), the major United States poet, is absent from the French literary field. Adrienne Rich was awarded numerous literary prizes throughout her prolific career. As an essayist, she was one of the first theorists of the feminist movement in the United States. Collections of her poems have been published in almost twenty languages worldwide. In French, fifteen of her poems have been translated and published in different forms (anthologies, literary magazines, blogs). A collection was being drawn up in collaboration with the poet, but to this day has never been released. Despite several attempts to introduce her work in France—some of her essays have been translated, a collection of her poems was in the agrégation curriculum, and she was invited to read her work in a bookshop—in 2019 it remains largely invisible to French readers. This thesis will thus try to explain this “arrested” reception first by examining the translations of Rich’s poems which have been published in French. Who translated her poetry? How can we characterise their translations? Their work is part of the French subfield of translated poetry which will be analysed so as to identify what is at stake, who is involved and how the poetry is distributed. In the light of these analyses which come under the sociology of translation and of reception, the case of Adrienne Rich’s poetry will be compared with other US male and especially female poets from the same period. In this reception context, addressing the history of ideas is crucial. Indeed, Adrienne Rich’s work is marked by her engagement with feminism, which is a significant element in the cultural transfer which translation represents. As such, the history of feminist movements and theories in France and the United States since the 1960s will be subjected to close analysis. Lastly, in a prospective approach, this thesis will focus on the conditions for the possible publication of a collection of Adrienne Rich’s poetry translated into French, in light of the analysis of the publishing field of poetry in France and of a microtextual reading of her previously published poems. These considerations will be illustrated by new translations or retranslations of selected poems. At the heart of this research lies the question: how is feminist poetry to be translated?

Este trabalho teve por objetivo investigar os fatores linguísticos e tradutórios envolvidos na Declaração de Pequim (ONU, 1995; 2006 [1995]) em língua inglesa e na sua tradução em língua portuguesa, analisando as unidades de tradução (ALVES, 2014) relativas à noção de gênero e verificando como a sensibilidade do tema pode afetar a tradução do documento. Pelo viés da tradução, a declaração da ONU pode ser considerada um texto sensível, pois trata de direito das mulheres, gênero, empoderamento da mulher e sexo versus gênero, pontos que afetam a tradução do texto. Para tanto, utilizamos a Linguística de Corpus como abordagem metodológica tanto para a construção do corpus, composto pela Declaração de Pequim em inglês e português, como para o alinhamento dos textos e criação de grafos. Para nossa análise de dados, selecionamos, qualitativamente, as unidades de tradução empowerment, gender, women and men e men and women, que apresentaram indícios de sensibilidade textual na Declaração de Pequim. A partir das variações e mudanças encontradas, percebemos que o tradutor utilizou distintas técnicas e estratégias de tradução (HURTADO ALBIR; MOLINA, 2002; AIXELÁ, 1996) pensando no propósito tradutório, na cultura da língua-alvo e na recepção do texto-alvo. Por fim, destacamos que a tradução de um texto sensível é um desafio para os tradutores, pois é preciso considerar diferentes fatores contextuais e situacionais no ato tradutório, como o objetivo da tradução, o propósito, a língua-alvo e a cultura alvo, a fim de não causar um choque social ou um estranhamento ao público leitor.
This study aimed to investigate the linguistic and translational aspects involved in Bejing Declaration (ONU, 1995; 2006 [1995]) in English and its translation into Portuguese, analyzing the translation units (ALVES, 2014) related to the notion of gender and verifying how the sensibility of the theme could affect the translation of the document. By translation bias, the UN Declaration could be considered a sensitive text, because its about women’s rights, gender, empowerment of women and sex versus gender, points that affect the translation of the text. For this purpose, we used the Corpus Linguistics as methodological approach to build the corpus, composed by the Beijing Declaration in English and in Portuguese, as to the text alignment and the creation of the graphs. For our data analysis, we select, qualitatively, the translation units empowerment, gender, women and men and men and women, that presented evidences of textual sensibility in Beijing Declaration. From the variations and changes found, we realized that the translator used different translation techniques and strategies (HURTADO ALBIR; MOLINA, 2002; AIXELÁ, 1996) thinking about the translation purpose, the culture of the target-language and the reception of the target-text. Finally, we emphasize that the translation of a sensitive text is a challenge for translators, because its necessary to consider different contextual and situational factors in the translational act, as the translation objective, the purpose, the target-language and the target-culture, in order not to cause a social shock or a strangerness in the readership.

A presente dissertação tem como objetivo mostrar que o teatro é uma eficiente forma de auto-representação assim como uma poderosa arma para a subversão de valores impostos pela sociedade hegemônica. Quando consideramos o teatro Contemporâneo, principalmente aquele produzido pelos então chamados grupos de minorias, podemos encontrar vários autores que fazem de suas obras um protesto contra a opressão, a violência e a discriminação impostas pelo excludente discurso colonial. Um exemplo disso é a obra A Raisin in the Sun da autora afro-americana Lorraine Hansberry. A autora nos mostra que o teatro pode representar uma possibilidade para que os grupos historicamente excluídos tragam a público a situação de opressão vivenciada, protestando contra ela e subvertendo o discurso hegemônico que tende a valorizar apenas obras pertencentes ao cânone. Podemos perceber que na contemporaneidade muitas histórias tidas por muito tempo como marginais ou ainda ex-cêntricas, como a dos afro-americanos, por exemplo, passaram a ser conhecidas através de produções transgressoras e subversivas que surgiram na tentativa de expressão do self e vieram a dar voz a grupos que até então eram excluídos, ou como Hutcheon os denominou, marginalizados, vindo então a reescrever suas histórias. Após considerações iniciais relacionadas à teoria do teatro, pretendemos ressaltar através da peça A Raisin in the Sun alguns desafios que o Outro encontra na busca por sua identidade e por melhores oportunidades prometidas pelo Sonho Americano. Pretendemos também ressaltar alguns desafios apresentados por tal obra ao longo de um possível processo de tradução visto que esta possui muitas marcas culturais. Por fim, discutiremos alguns desses desafios a serem encarados pela Tradução Intercultural na peça A Raisin in the Sun
The aim of this dissertation is to show that theater is an effective way of selfrepresentation as well as a powerful weapon used in order to subvert hegemonic values. When considering contemporary drama, mainly the one produced by the so-called minority groups, it is possible to find several authors who made of their works site for protest against oppression, violence and discrimination imposed by the excluding colonial discourse. One clear example of such a work is the play A Raisin in the Sun written by the African-American writer Lorraine Hansberry. The author shows that theater can represent a possibility for the historically excluded groups to bring into public awareness the situation of oppression lived by their community, protesting against it and subverting the hegemonic discourse which tends to value just canonical works and stories. In contemporary times, many stories/histories taken for a long time as marginal or ex-centric, such as the African-Americans for example, became known through transgressive and subverting productions that came out as an attempt to express the self, giving voice to groups so far excluded - or as Hutcheon referred to them, marginalized - rewriting their stories/histories. After some initial considerations related to the theory of drama, we intend to highlight some of the challenges that the Other faces while searching for his/her identity and better opportunities promised by the American Dream in the play A Raisin in the Sun. We also intend to present some of the challenges presented by such work during the translation process due to its strong cultural peculiarities. Besides, we intend to discuss some of these challenges to be faced by Intercultural Translation in A Raisin in the Sun

En esta investigación se analizaron la construcción y la traducción de las masculinidades gay en la serie Looking, en sus doblajes para América Latina y España. La investigación se basó en datos empíricos producidos a partir de un corpus multimodal bilingüe. El análisis se basó en los Estudios Descriptivos de la Traducción. Así, se identificaron las funciones del habla camp y discursos que proponen que la identidad gay se significa a partir de la expresión del deseo y que dicho deseo construye de manera diferenciada el cuerpo blanco y masculino frente al cuerpo racializado. En esta configuración discursiva y que integra el camp, el doblaje latinoamericano y peninsular procesan las representaciones diferenciadamente. La versión peninsular recurre a estrategias de naturalización y de recreación; mientras que la versión para Latinoamérica recurre sobre todo a formas de fidelidad lingüística y estandarización sin crear un sentido comunitario gay localizado.
In this research, the author analyzes the construction and translation of gay masculinities in HBO’s series Looking, and in its dubbed versions for Latin America and Spain. The methods and analysis were based on Descriptive Translation Studies and on empirical data produced from a multimodal bilingual corpus. The results reveal how camp (in its linguistic form) and the discourses supporting gay identifications function through the expression of homoerotic desire and community. This desire is represented from the standpoint of white and conventionally masculine characters, while eroticizing the racially marked bodies. These discursive practices, including camp talk, are processed differently in the Latin American and Spanish dubbed versions. The peninsular version uses naturalization and recreation strategies while the version for Latin America resorts above all to forms of linguistic fidelity and standardization without creating a sense of a localized gay community.

L’antichissima tradizione confuciana vede nella donna una figura dolce, tranquilla e assertiva, la cui funzione primaria è quella di badare alla famiglia. La sua sfera d’azione principale è quindi il focolare domestico, e questa visione patriarcale è rimasta invariata nel corso del tempo. Durante il governo di Mao Zedong, a partire dagli anni Cinquanta, si iniziò a parlare di parità di genere, ma fu solo in seguito alle riforme economiche volute da Deng Xiaoping, negli anni Ottanta, che la condizione della donna cinese si poté dire davvero migliorata. Tali riforme hanno cambiato la Cina in misura radicale, aprendola all’esterno e portandola a un boom economico mai visto prima. In questo frangente le donne, soprattutto delle aree urbane, hanno iniziato a ottenere mansioni pari a quelle degli uomini e a raggiungere la controparte maschile nell’ambito scolastico e accademico. Ciò ha portato a un graduale ritardo nei matrimoni, dal momento che sempre più donne ambiscono a laurearsi e ad avanzare nella carriera. Molte giovani cinesi delle metropoli, raggiunto il venticinquesimo anno d’età, godono già di un ottimo stipendio e amano la loro carriera, raggiunta dopo anni di studi impegnativi all’università. Non avendo ancora un partner, tuttavia, queste ragazze subiscono una fortissima pressione da parte della famiglia e dello Stato a sposarsi entro breve tempo, per rispettare il vincolo di pietà filiale e formare a loro volta una famiglia, prima che sia troppo tardi. La volontà di quelle che oggi in Cina vengono dette shengnü, ‘donne avanzate’, spesso si scontra con quella della società, che le vorrebbe presto maritate, al costo di ridimensionare le proprie aspettative sul lavoro. I giovani single della Cina urbana non ricevono la stessa stigmatizzazione delle loro coetanee, e questo fa pensare che la Repubblica Popolare Cinese sia ancora lontana dal raggiungimento di un’effettiva parità di genere.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate how public spaces in the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm have materialized in relation to cultural policy objectives and ideals of a democratic and inclusive museum. The investigated time period spans from 1943 to 2013. The Swedish History Museum is a state-run archaeological museum, where norms and values are expressed through various governmental policy- and control documents. Hence, entering the museum also means entering a symbolic national space. The fact that the museum has been politically regulated throughout the studied period makes it illustrative of changing democratic public ideals in the 20th century. Unlike other similar studies, the empirical focus is not on exhibitions, but on other public spaces that visitors encounter; the entrance, the shop, children’s spaces and the courtyard. These spaces are less invisible in the museum hierarchy. At the same time, they are often central spaces to visitors. The museum building is not as fixed as it might appear to be. Drawing on ideas from Bruno Latour and Doreen Massey – and their perspectives on space, materiality and power – I explore how the social and spatial changes of the museum affect each other. Efforts have continuously been made to alter these public spaces, and the outlines and uses have repeatedly changed. By combining archival materials, interviews and observations, I investigate how democratic ideals have been negotiated in material forms, and what kind of audiences/visitors these spaces have conceptualized over time. Linking different kinds of sources, that speak from various levels and positions, has been an analytically important method. The analysis describes the museum as a meaning producing network that materially embody different, and sometimes conflicting ideologies. The public spaces have been shaped by tensions; between education versus pleasure, collecting versus showing, and by the dichotomy between culture and commerce. What is communicated thorough various materialities and inscriptions in the shop, the entrance, and the spaces for children sometimes contradict perspectives produced in exhibitions and educational programmes. Hierarchies between professional positions and knowledges propagate as social extensions towards the visitors, and sometimes, reproduce structural hierarchies. Museum functions literally “takes place”, depending on how they are valued and assigned meaning. The museum has increasingly included children, while also becoming a space for commerce. Various, and sometimes incompatible ideals on equality and inclusion have been implemented, simultaneously. At the same time, the public spaces carry unique spatial qualities, which can benefit inclusion. Concluding, the dissertation stresses that the entrance, the shop, the children spaces and other public spaces perceived as “peripheral” need to be viewed as central, not as superficial services or add-ons to the “real” museum experience, i.e. the exhibition.

Abstract This thesis sets out to explore the cultural differences between Sweden and the United States by examining the substantial changes made to Men Who Hate Women, including the change in the book’s title in English to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. My thesis focuses in particular on changes in the depiction of the female protagonist: Lisbeth Salander. Unfortunately we do not have access to translator Steven T. Murray’s original translation, though we know that the English publisher and rights holder Christopher MacLehose chose to enhance Larsson’s work in order to make the novel more interesting for English-speaking readers, which resulted in Murray translating under the pseudonym Reg Keeland as he did not agree to the translation made by MacLehose and Knopf. Furthermore, this thesis touches on the ethics of translation, and will likewise argue the importance of facilitating a dialog concerning misogyny and rape culture.

Aquest estudi explora i problematitza el viatge de traducció de Simone de Beauvoir a Turquia a través de les dades textuals i paratextuals dels anys 50 endavant, amb una perspectiva conscient de gènere. La primera problemàtica està relacionada amb la (in)visibilitat de Beauvoir i la seva obra dins de l'espai cultural de Turquia. Si bé l'obra de Beauvoir havia estat àmpliament traduïda i llegida des de la dècada de 1960, no existien crítiques publicades de les seves traduccions. La segona problemàtica té a veure amb la seva parcial (i dolenta) representació. Com Beauvoir va ser introduïda per primera vegada a l'espai cultural de Turquia pels mateixos mediadors culturals (masculins) que van introduir Sartre en la intel·lectualitat turca, especialment en els anys 60 i 70, el seu nom es va associar amb el de Sartre i l'existencialisme, fins als anys 80 quan Beauvoir va ser finalment abordada per les feministes turques. La tercera problemàtica està, de fet, relacionada amb la segona, i és el retard en la recepció del vessant feminista de Beauvoir en el sistema cultural de Turquia. Per contextualitzar els resultats, s'argumenta que aquests materials paratextuals i textuals que van tenir un paper significatiu en la “reescriptura” de Beauvoir i la seva obra a Turquia ens donen diverses pistes sobre les postures culturals, socials, patriarcals, i ideològiques respecte “la qüestió de dona”, a l'espai cultural de Turquia.

Si bien la obra de Beauvoir había sido ampliamente traducida y leída desde la década de 1960, no existían críticas publicadas de sus traducciones. La segunda problemática tiene que ver con su parcial (y mala) representación. Como Beauvoir fue introducida por primera vez en el espacio cultural de Turquía por los mismos mediadores culturales (masculinos) que introdujeron Sartre en la intelectualidad turca, especialmente en los años 60 y 70, su nombre se asoció con el de Sartre y el existencialismo, hasta los años 80 cuando Beauvoir fue finalmente abordada por las feministas turcas. La tercera problemática está, de hecho, relacionada con la segunda, y es el retraso en la recepción de la vertiente feminista de Beauvoir en el sistema cultural de Turquía. Para contextualizar los resultados, se argumenta que estos materiales paratextuales y textuales que tuvieron un papel significativo en la “reescritura” de Beauvoir y su obra en Turquía nos dan varias pistas sobre las posturas culturales, sociales, patriarcales, e ideológicas respecto “la cuestión de mujer”, en el espacio cultural de Turquía.
This study explores and problematizes the translational journey of Simone de Beauvoir into Turkey through the paratextual and textual data beginning from the 1950s onwards, with a gender-conscious perspective. The first problematic is related to the (in)visibility of Beauvoir and her work within the Turkish cultural space. While Beauvoir’s oeuvre has been extensively translated and read since the 1960s, no reviewers have commented on any translation at all. The second problematic has to do with her partial (mis)representation. As Beauvoir was first introduced into the Turkish cultural climate by the same (male) mediators who introduced Sartre to the Turkish intelligentsia, especially in the 1960s and 1970s, her name was associated with that of Sartre and existentialism, until the 1980s when Beauvoir was finally approached by Turkish feminists. The third problematic is in fact related with the second one, and it is the time lag in the reception of Beauvoir’s feminist side in the Turkish cultural system. To see the big picture and to contextualize the results, it is argued that these paratextual and textual materials which played a significant role in the rewriting of Beauvoir and her work in Turkey give us clues about cultural, social, patriarchal, and ideological stances on “the woman question” within the Turkish cultural space.

Denna uppsats undersöker normer för översättning av könskodat språk. Genusvetare menar att könskodat språk inte bara upprätthåller stereotyper om kön utan också förstärker dem. Därför tycker feministiska översättningsvetare att det är viktigt att vara medveten om vilka stereotyper som översättningar överför mellan kulturer. Denna uppsats behandlar stereotyper om kön i japanska serier, så kallade manga. Med hjälp av den översättningsvetenskapliga metoden sammankopplade par jämförs källtexterna och måltexterna med varandra. Resultatet visar att nästan allt det könskodade språket har utelämnats i måltexterna. Trots att detta gör språket mindre stereotypt blir inte alla karaktärer mindre stereotypa. En karaktär är till och med mer stereotyp i måltexten än i källtexten. Detta visar att utelämning förmodligen inte är ett medvetet val av översättaren för att minska stereotyper. Anledningen till utelämningarna verkar istället vara att det är en norm att utelämna en stor del av karaktärers rollspråk.
This essay investigates norms in translation of gender stereotype language. Gender Studies has for many years claimed that gender stereotypes in language not only maintain gender stereotypes but also reinforce them. Because of this feminist translation theorists stress the importance of being aware of what stereotypes translation can and do transfer between cultures. In this essay the gender stereotypes that are dealt with are the ones of characters in Japanese comics, so called manga. With a methodology from Translations Studies, coupled pairs, it compares Japanese source texts with Swedish target texts. The results shows that almost all of the gender stereotype language in the source texts has been omitted in the target texts. Even though this makes the language less stereotype, it does not make all of the characters less stereotype. One character is even more stereotype in the target text than in the source text. This probably shows that the omissions are not a choice made by the translator to reduce stereotypes. The reason for the omissions seems instead to be that it is a norm in translation of manga to omit a certain amount of the character specific language.

När en infödd talare av spanska med hög behärskningsnivå i svenska samtalar med en annan individ med liknande språkbakgrund är det inte sällan fraser som ”¿me pasarías la blåbärssylt?” (”kan du skicka blåbärssylten, tack?”) uppstår. Lexikaliskt inskott (eng. noun insertion), d.v.s. att skjuta in substantiv från andraspråket i för övrigt förstaspråksdominerat tal, är ett vanligt förekommande fenomen hos tvåspråkiga. Men vad händer när de två samspelande språken har asymmetriska genussystem som spanskans och svenskans? Vilket spanskt grammatiskt genus ska man då tillskriva de inskjutna svenska enheterna som ”blåbärssylt” i rubriken? Och vad är det som styr dessa val? Två hypoteser ställs upp för att försöka få svar på dessa frågor: genusvalet styrs i större utsträckning av det inskjutna substantivets ändelsemorfem, eller så styrs det i större utsträckning av dess översättningsmotsvarighet. För att testa dessa två hypoteser genomfördes ett experiment med 30 infödda spansktalare med svenska som andraspråk där de ombads attribuera ett spanskt grammatiskt genus, maskulinum eller femininum, till en del svenska substantiv i två olika uppgifter, en lucktext och en ordlista. Resultaten visade att både de olika stimuliordens ändelsemorfem och översättningsmotsvarighet spelade en signifikativ roll för val av grammatiskt genus, och att översättningsmotsvarighet hade en relativt större påverkan på genusvalet jämfört med ändelsemorfem. Detta kan eventuellt peka på att genus hos infödda spansktalare upplevs som en inherent egenskap hos själva referenten, med påtagliga konsekvenser för hur de ser på och tänker kring omvärlden.
