Digital animation and video can be utilized to portray molecular events where the mechanism of action is known but the process occurs at a sub-microscopic level. There needs to be a strong collaboration between scientific advisors and digital artists when creating the animation such that the artistic interpretation of the molecular event conforms to the known and accepted confines of science. This thesis analyses the position of translations in the work of the American writer and translator Lydia Davis. Davis has been publishing stories and translations since the early 1970s, and has translated works by Maurice Blanchot, Michel Leiris, and Marcel Proust among others. This thesis argues that her translations form a graft onto the body of her own fiction; they are both part of her work and retain their identity as being written by someone else. Since the emergence of audiovisual translation as an academic discipline in the 1990s, research in the field has evolved in a wide range of directions. Subtitling, however, has remained a largely prescriptive form of translation, and has been typically unaffected by the various ethical and creative turns that have emerged within the wider discipline of translation studies. And, while recent years have seen an increasing preference for interdisciplinary research, this interest has rarely questioned subtitles' capacity to convey meaning within the film text. I argue that a pragmaticistic interpretation of art – that is a theory based on the philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce – can encompass the variety of interpretations of a work of art. The first mode is the aesthetic interpretation that focuses on the quality or the degree of feeling of unique presence. The second mode is the semiotic interpretation that focuses on the sign function of a work of art. The aesthetic interpretation is founded on the view of aesthetic
