Abstract:
Detta examensarbete redovisar processen att utveckla en webbplats vars syfte är att marknadsföra en frilansande översättare. Syftet med rapporten är att undersöka vilka delar och komponenter av en sådan webbplats som är viktiga att presentera för eventuella beställare.  Vidare undersöks teorier gällande bedömning av översättningskvalité genom kvalitetsindikatorer, samt hur dessa grafiskt kan appliceras på en webbplats för påvisa god översättningskvalité i marknadsföringssyfte. Genom att använda metoder i användbarhet i form av en enkätundersökning och användartester undersöks hur deltagarna uppfattade webbplatsens navigation, gränssnitt och grafiska utseende. Resultatet av detta arbete visar på att besökare av sådan webbplats tydligt vill se vilka tjänster företaget erbjuder, en tydlig arbetsbakgrund samt vilken utbildning översättaren har. Studien visade även på att en grafisk bedömning av översättningskvalité måste göras först när en ansvarig bedömare kan bli presenterad för betraktaren. Gällande design, navigation och gränssnitt är det viktigt att webbplatsen inte har för mycket innehåll och blir för stor, samt att färgvalet för webbplatsen inte är för stark och kontrastfylld.
This paper describes the process of developing a web page with the purpose of marketing a freelancing translator. The purpose of this paper is to examine which parts and components that are relevant for clients visiting the web page. The paper also examines theories and methods regarding evaluations of translation quality through Translation Quality Assessments. These Translation Quality Assessments are later applied graphically in order to investigate how these could ease the process of determining translation quality for clients. By using methods in Usability, such as an online survey and usability testing, the navigation, interface and graphical appearance of the web page is examined.  The result of this study shows that clients visiting such a website wants to see a clear description of what services the translator offers, what work the translator has done earlier and what educational background the translator has got. The studie also showed that a graphical evaluation of Translation Quality Assessments must be done first when a liable evaluator can be presented for the viewer. Regarding the design, navigation and interface of such a web page, it is important that there is not too much content. It is also important that the color scheme of the web page is not too colorful and contains too much contrasts.

As yet, few explicit, practical and easy to implement marking scales for evaluating the quality of translations have been proposed. The purpose of this study is to introduce a new marking guide for making quantitative assessments of the quality of non-literary translations, and to test its practicality through a case study using the Arabic language. On the basis of the results, some generalizations about translation and translation quality assessment are made. Early treatments which dealt with the evaluation of translations are discussed, showing their merits and defects. The new marking guide is then described, including classification of errors and examples of each type of error. Guidelines are presented for the holistic subjective assessment, the guidelines are evaluated and the outcome discussed

Abstract:
Translation evaluation is one of the main concerns of translation theorists, members of translation revision boards, and most importantly it is the concern of translator trainers. Translation quality has often been associated with the correctness of the grammatical structure and the appropriateness of the lexical item. Little concern has empirically been given to units larger than the sentence, i.e. text. This seems to be the result of the prevailing linguistic trend that has put more emphasis on a -context-free' sentence, rather than on text in context. This study proposes to investigate, discuss and develop a translation quality assessment model that takes text, not a sentence as the ultimate aim of analysis. The study will also attempt to explore the theoretical and practical implications of the model to be developed for the training of translators in the Arab world. The model to be developed should be based on the definition that translation is the replacement of a text in the source language by a semantically, pragmatically and textually equivalent text in the target language. Text, then, is the focus of interest in this study. Therefore, the model will be developed within the framework of text lingui4Vics for which text is regarded as a communicative occurrence. The developed model will serve as a means to evaluating the quality of Arabic-English translations of a particular type of texts, argumentative text type. Therefore, two argumentative texts in the form of newspaper editorials, selected from two Moroccan quality newspapers will be analyzed along the dimensions of what will be known in this study as a Situational/Textual model. The resultant "textual profile" will, then, be taken as a "yardstick" against which will be measured 81 translations collected from Fand School of Advanced Translation (FST) and 5 from the department of modern languages, Salford University (SU). The first introductory chapter lays out the main arguments of the thesis. Chapters two and three present and discuss sentence-oriented translation models, and text-oriented translation models respectively. Chapter four presents and discusses the following: a) the three aspects of meaning: semantic, pragmatic, and textual, b) language function vs. text function, and finally C) House's (1981) model of translation quality assessment. Chapter five presents the method of operation, discusses the decision criteria needed to deal with the dimensions linguistic correlates, and finally illustrates the extended situational/textual model for translation quality assessment. Chapter six is the application of the model on the two Arabic argumentative texts. In addition, argumentative text structure will be discussed and the difference between Arabic and English argumentative texts will be explained. Finally, chapter seven includes the source language text (SLT), and the target language text (TLT) statement of comparison and statement of quality, and a discussion of the theoretical implication of the model for the training of translators in the Arab world.

When J. R. R. Tolkien’s trilogy The Lord of the Rings was published in Swedish 1959-1961, the translation by Åke Ohlmarks was considered by most critics to be excellent. According to Ohlmarks, even J. R. R. Tolkien himself and his son Christopher were very pleased with it, which Ohlmarks was told by Christopher when he met him in 1975. This is, however, contradicted in the authorised biography of Tolkien by Carpenter (1978), in which Tolkien is said to have been most negative towards the way Ohlmarks handled the text. Before the biography was published, Christopher Tolkien and Ohlmarks had become bitter enemies, which might explain the re-evaluation. The schism has been described by Ohlmarks in his book Tolkiens arv (1978). But ever since The Lord of the Rings came out in paperback in 1971 there has been a discussion about the translation quality also in Sweden. When I first read the books in English I had the Swedish translation beside me. I soon discovered that Ohlmarks had taken great liberties with the text. I noticed that the descriptions were often more detailed in the Swedish translation than in the original and it was this fact that first roused my interest. Therefore, I decided to try to make a translation quality assessment of a part of the text, using a model by Juliane House.

Abstract:
Translation quality assessment (TQA) types may be divided into two main types: (1) models with a quantitative dimension, such as SEPT (1979), Sical (1986) and GTS (2000), and (2) non-quantitative, more textological models such as Nord (1991) and House (1997). Because it tends to focus on microtextual (lexical, syntactic) analysis, sampling and error counts, Type 1 suffers from major shortcomings. First, because of time constraints, it cannot assess, except on the basis of statistical probabilities, the acceptability of the content of the translation as discourse. Second, the microtextual analysis inevitably hinders any serious assessment of the content macrostructure of the translation. Third, the establishment of an acceptability threshold based on a specific number of errors is vulnerable to criticism both theoretically and in the marketplace. Type 2 cannot offer a cogent acceptability threshold either, precisely because it does not propose error weighting and quantification for individual texts. Another drawback of Type 2 is that it is applied almost exclusively to literary and advertising texts. What is needed is a model that combines the quantitative and textological dimensions, along the lines proposed by Bensoussan and Rosenhouse (1990) and Larose (1987, 1998), and targets instrumental (pragmatic) translations. The goal of this thesis is to develop an argumentation-centred model to meet this need. With Toulmin's argument macrostructure (1984) as a starting point, a set of argumentation parameters are developed: macrostructure, propositional functions (Widdowson 1978) and reasoning structure (Thomas 1986), conjunctives and inference indicators (Halliday and Hasan 1976; Roulet et al. 1985; and Thomas 1986), argument types (Corbett and Connors 1999), figures of speech, and narrative strategy (Ouellet 1992). These parameters provide a framework for assessing the degree to which translations preserve the argumentation, coherence and cohesion of the message of the source text, for determining critical passages for TQA, and for proposing a new breakdown of errors based on three levels of seriousness. A weighting grid is then added to the model to enable evaluators to take account of conventional parameters such as target-language errors. Finally, a new set of quality standards is proposed for instrumental texts produced by professionals and students alike.

Abstract:
Translation evaluation in the sense of quality assessment emerges as a central issue in the prolific field of translation research. This thesis analyses the criteria of quality used for translation evaluation, particularly in the case of literary translation in the context of English and French. It starts with a survey of the theoretical terminology on which quality assessment is based, namely source, target, equivalence, faithfulness, and also considers other relevant issues like cultural factors and linguistic norms. The second theory-oriented chapter examines in more detail what exactly is assessed in translation, and studies various models of evaluation in order to elicit all the elements which affect the evaluation procedure, The rest of the thesis analyses in detail the criteria of evaluation of the various parties which play a part in the evaluation of translations: publishers, reviewers, academics, translators, and authors. Chapter three considers the priorities of commissioners, particularly publishers of foreign literature. Chapter four is the result of the corpus study of about three hundred book-review articles from the British and French press. Chapter five concentrates on the special case of retranslation and the impact that this phenomenon has on quality assessment. Chapter six adopts an educational approach, and examines the place that translation is given in Moderi. Language Degree examinations in a variety of countries. It then compares different courses available for professional translator training, and considers their assessment procedures. The last chapter is a reflection on how translators see their work as professionals, which leads to the issue of author/translator cooperation. These chapters have, at least, one element in common: they all reveal the criteria of evaluation used for translations. In some cases, the criteria are explicit; in others, presuppositions and prejudices need to be elicited from the material. What this project shows in the end is that evaluating translations is a complex procedure, in which many factors come into play and for which there are conflicts of interest between the different parties concerned. In order to conduct a more comprehensive assessment, it is therefore necessary to consider the 'forces' which come into contact in this communicative exercise.

Abstract:
Translation quality assessment is a fast growing sub-field of Translation Studies. It focuses on the inter-relationships between the text translated from (ST) and the text translated into (TT). These inter-relationships involve the lexis, grammar, syntax, and semantics of both texts. Unlike sentences in isolation, texts are context-bound. Distinctions between text and sentence are made. Text-bound translation can only be conducted and assessed within the domain of text-linguistics. Assessment of translation quality should be based on a definable, applicable, and testable model which, in turn, should be based on a sound, comprehensive theory of translation. Current models for translation emphasite one aspect against other aspects. For instance, the grammatical model focuses on the linguistic aspect of translation. The cultural model, on the other hand, highlights the communicative aspect whereas the interpretive model concentrates on the pragmatic aspect of translation. Such artificial compartmentalization is alien to the nature of translation. As a process translation, in fact, involves the integrated synthesis of the above aspects. This theris presents a model for translation quality assessment based on a sound theory of translation which comprehends the philosophical (pragmatic), communicative (cross-cultural), and semiotic (linguistic) aspects of langauge. Since translation is a semantic entity, our model - which we label 'rhetorical' - focuses on the concept of 'meaning shifts' according to which the meaning of a text is classifiable into obligatory, extended, and accessory meanings. This does not suggest that the semantic structures of a text exist in a state of utter un-relatedness. On the contrary, they survive in the form of inter-related layers within the macro-structure of the text. The relative dominance of any of the three meaning categories determines the type of text. According to this model, texts are broadly classified into literary, non-literary, and hybrid texts. In a literary text, extended and accessory meanings abound leaving a tiny room for obligatory meaning. In non-literary texts, on the other hand, extended and accessory meanings recede to the background leaving the obligatory meaning in the foreground. In hybrid or fuzzy texts, semantic structures are disproportionately distributed with no dominance of any specific category. The topic and scope of a hybrid text determine the volume of extended and accessory meaning in relation to obligatory meaning. The model is not intended for translation quality assessment only. It has pedagogical implications as well. Translation students and trainees can implement this model in textual analysis before they embark on the process of translation. Phonological, grammatical, syntactic, semantic, and lexical correspondences between SL and TL texts are identified before assessment of translation quality is established.

Abstract:
Translation quality assessment remains pertinent in both translation theory and in the industry. Specifically, the process of assessing a target document's quality or a person's translation competence involves a lot of time and money on the part of various governments, organizations and individuals. In response to this issue, this project builds on the ongoing research of Hague et al. (2012), who seek to determine the capabilities of a computerized translation test for the French-to-English and Spanish-to-English language pairs. Specifically, Hague et al. (2012) question whether a good score on a detect-and-correct style computerized translation test that is calculated by a computer also indicates a good score on a traditional full translation test that is calculated by hand. This project seeks to further this research by seeking to answer the same question using an Arabic-to-English language pair. The methods used in this research involve testing individuals using two different style translation tests and then comparing the results. The first style translation test involves a detect-and-correct format where a subject is given a list of project specifications in the form of a translation brief, a source text passage and a corresponding target text passage that has errors introduced throughout. The subject is expected to detect and fix the errors while leaving the rest of the text alone. A score is given for this test using an automated algorithm. The second style test is a traditional translation test where a subject is given the same translation brief and a source text. The subject is expected to produce an acceptable target text, which is subsequently scored by hand. Thereafter, various forms of analysis are used to determine the relationship between the scores of the two types of tests. The results of this research do not strongly suggest that a high score on the detect-and-correct portion of the test indicates a high score on a hand-graded full translation test for the subject population used. However, this research still provides insight, especially concerning whether the detect-and-correct portion of the test actually measures translation competence and concerning second language acquisition (SLA) programs and their intentions. In addition, this research provides insight into logistical issues in testing such as the impact text difficulty and length may have on a detect-and-correct style test as well as the negative impact the American Translators Association (ATA) grading practices of weighting errors and capping errors can have on an experiment such as the one described in this research.

This document is a supplement to the article entitled “The Multidimensional Quality Metric (MQM) Framework: A New Framework for Translation Quality Assessment”, which has been acepted for publication in the upcoming January volume of JoSTrans, the Journal of Specialized Translation. The article is a coauthored project between Dr. Alan K. Melby, Dr. Troy Cox and myself. In this document you will find a preface describing the process of writing the article, an annotated bibliography of sources consulted in my research, a summary of what I learned, and a conclusion that considers the future avenues opened up by this research. Our article examines a new method for assessing the quality of a translation known as the Multidimensional Quality Metric, MQM. In our experiment we set the MQM framework to mirror, as closely as possible, the American Translators Association's (ATA) translator certification exam. To do this we mapped the ATA error categories to corresponding MQM error categories. We acquired a set of 29 student translations and had a group of student raters use the MQM framework to rate these translations. We measured the practicality of the MQM framework by comparing the time required for ratings to the average time required to rate translations in the industry. In addition, we had 2 ATA certified translators rate the anchor translation (a translation that was scored by every rater in order to have a point of comparison). The certified translators' ratings were used to verify that the scores given by the student raters were valid. Reliability was also measured, which found that the student raters were not interchangeable, but that the measurement estimate of reliability was adequate. The article's goal was to determine the extent to which the Multidimensional Quality Metric framework for translation evaluation is viable (practical, reliable and valid) when designed to mirror the ATA certification exam. Overall, the results of the experiment showed that MQM could be a viable way to rate translation quality when operationalized based on the ATA's translator certification exam. This is an important discovery in the field of translation quality, because it shows that MQM could be a viable tool for future researchers. Our experiment suggests that researchers ought to take advantage of the MQM framework because, not only is it free, but any studies completed using the MQM framework would have a common base, making these studies more easily comparable.

This thesis is a descriptive, evaluative and comparative study in the field of translation studies. One of the objectives for this thesis is to explore a valid criterion by which a literary translation can be evaluated efficiently and to assess the translation of the selected novel for this research. The aim of this study is to measure the shifts which occurred between TTl and TT2 when compared to the ST. The thesis also aims at highlighting the significance of culture and the way cultures are introduced to the Tar et readership through translation. It is thought that the strategy of Foreignization enriches target texts and introduces cultural elements to the target reader. The corpus of the study is Ziqiiq Al Midaq the well-known novel by Naguib Mahfouz, the Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature in 1988. This novel has been first translated by Trevor Le Gassick in 1966 and a revision of this translation was published in 1975. The main objective of this study is to explore the translation shifts which were applied in TTl and TT2. The methodology of this thesis relies on the Nord Model (2005). It focuses on the translation problems introduced by Nord. The four aspects of translation problems Nord identifies are Pragmatic, linguistic, cultural and text-specific translation problems. A final assessment of the quality of both versions of translation is discussed at the end of the study.

Esta tese propõe um tipo especial de análise, descrição lingüística e avaliação de textos literários traduzidos, baseando-se no referencial teórico da Lingüística Sistêmico-Funcional, uma teoria de linguagem que toma como ponto de partida as significações das expressões lingüísticas. Operando com o conceito de tradução como retextualização, este estudo compara dois contos de Joyce, 'Araby' e 'Eveline' com algumas traduções publicadas no Brasil. O texto de partida e os textos traduzidos são descritos em termos de escolhas sistêmicas, com especial atenção às configurações que emergem para a codificação de significados interpessoais e ideacionais. A sensibilidade dos tradutores para os significados selecionados e realizados no texto de partida e sua resposta a eles em termos das opções retextualizadas informam a avaliação dos textos traduzidos. Argumenta-se que a análise de textos literários e de suas retextualizações em termos de sua forma de significar _ ou seja, estilística translacional baseada nos conceitos da Lingüística Sistemico-Funcional _ oferece um sólido referencial para a avaliação da qualidade de textos literários traduzidos.

Abstract:
MT is becoming a powerful tool for professional translators, language service providers and common users. The present work focuses on its quality, evaluating the translations produced by two neural MT systems – i.e. Google Translate and DeepL Translator – through manual error annotation. The data set used for this task is composed of semi-specialized German texts translated into Italian. Aim of the present work is to assess the quality of MT outputs for the data set considered and obtain a detailed overview of the type of errors made by the two neural MT systems examined. The first part of this work provides a theoretical background for MT and its evaluation. Chapter 1 deals with the definition of MT and summarizes its history. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the different MT architectures is provided, as well as an overview of the possible application scenarios and the different categories of users. Chapter 2 introduces the notion of quality in the translation field and the main automatic and manual methods applied to MT quality assessment tasks. A comprehensive analysis of some of the most significant studies on neural and phrase-based MT systems output quality is then provided. The second part of this work presents a quality assessment of the output produced by two neural MT systems, i.e. Google Translation and DeepL Translator. The evaluation was performed through manual error annotation based on a fine-grained error taxonomy. Chapter 3 outlines the methodology followed during the evaluation, with a description of the dataset, the neural MT systems chosen for the study, the annotation tool and the taxonomy used during the annotation task. Chapter 4 provides the results of the evaluation and a comment thereof, offering examples extracted from the annotated data set. The final part of this work summarizes the major findings of the present contribution. Results are then discussed, with a focus on their implication for future work.

Abstract:
This work focuses on Machine Translation (MT) and Speech-to-Speech Translation, two emerging technologies that allow users to automatically translate written and spoken texts. The first part of this work provides a theoretical framework for the evaluation of Google Translate and Microsoft Translator, which is at the core of this study. Chapter one focuses on Machine Translation, providing a definition of this technology and glimpses of its history. In this chapter we will also learn how MT works, who uses it, for what purpose, what its pros and cons are, and how machine translation quality can be defined and assessed. Chapter two deals with Speech-to-Speech Translation by focusing on its history, characteristics and operation, potential uses and limits deriving from the intrinsic difficulty of translating spoken language. After describing the future prospects for SST, the final part of this chapter focuses on the quality assessment of Speech-to-Speech Translation applications. The last part of this dissertation describes the evaluation test carried out on Google Translate and Microsoft Translator, two mobile translation apps also providing a Speech-to-Speech Translation service. Chapter three illustrates the objectives, the research questions, the participants, the methodology and the elaboration of the questionnaires used to collect data. The collected data and the results of the evaluation of the automatic speech recognition subsystem and the language translation subsystem are presented in chapter four and finally analysed and compared in chapter five, which provides a general description of the performance of the evaluated apps and possible explanations for each set of results. In the final part of this work suggestions are made for future research and reflections on the usability and usefulness of the evaluated translation apps are provided.

The Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM) framework is a new system for creating customized translation quality assessment and evaluation metrics designed to fit specific translation needs. In this study I test the viability of MQM to determine whether the framework in its current state is ready for implementation as a quality assessment framework in the translation industry. Other contributions from this study include: (1) online software for designing and using metrics based on the MQM framework; (2) a survey of the typical, real-world quality assessment and evaluation practices of language service providers in the translation industry; and (3) a measurement scale for determining the viability of translation quality assessment and evaluation frameworks such as MQM. The study demonstrates that the MQM framework is a viable solution when it comes to the validity and practicality of creating translation quality metrics for the translation industry. It is not clear whether those metrics can be used reliably without extensive training of qualified assessors on the use of MQM metrics.

Post-editing machine translation has become more common in recent years due to the increase in materials requiring translation and the effectiveness of machine translation systems. This project presents a system for formalizing structured translation specifications that facilitates the assessment of the performance of a post-editor. This report provides details concerning two software applications: the Ruqual Specifications Writer, which aids in the authoring of post-editing project specifications, and the Ruqual Rubric Viewer which provides a graphical user interface for filling out a machine readable rubric file. The project as a whole relies on a definition of translation quality based on the specification approach. In order to test whether potential evaluators are able to reliably assess the quality of post-edited translations, a user study was conducted that utilized the Specifications Writer and Rubric Viewer. The specifications developed for the project were based on actual post-editing data provided by Ray Flournoy of Adobe. The study involved simulating the work of five post-editors, which consisted of developing texts and scenarios. 17 non-expert graders rated the work of the five fictional post-editors, and an Intraclass Correlation of the graders responses shows that they are reliable to a high degree. The groundwork laid by this project should help in the development of other applications that assist in the assessment of translation projects in terms of a specification approach to quality.

This is an applied study that critically analyzes the Arabic-English translation of a key cultural text: the biography of the Prophet Muhammad entitled The Sealed Nectar. It aims at assessing the translation to see how successful the translator was in composing an equivalent text to such a culture-specific one. The study adopts Juliane House's (1997) translation quality assessment model which is based on Systemic Functional Linguistic theory and relates texts to their situational and cultural contexts. In order to introduce a qualitative judgement of the work, the study enhances House’s model to make it applicable to culture-bound texts that call for overt translation. It introduces a consilience of: 1) Nord’s notion of culturemes; 2) Nida’s categorization of cultural features to help in analyzing religious terms and culture; 3) Dickins et al.’s compensation strategies that show the translator’s endeavor to balance the translation loss while dealing with such sensitive terms; 4) Martin and White’s appraisal theory which explores attitudinal meaning and, hence, helps in investigating the translator’s evaluation of these terms; and 5) Katan’s model that helps in highlighting the correlation between levels of cultures and discourse variables (field, mode and tenor). Application of the enhanced model reveals mismatches on all the discourse variables which indicate the application of a cultural filter that adopts the norms of English academic discourse, in addition to overt errors that distort the message of this sensitive text. The study thus complements House’s framework of translation quality assessment and introduces a model that can be further applied to assess overt translations.

Abstract:
Translation quality assessment (TQA) is a controversial area in Translation Studies. Scholars attribute this to the subjective nature of quality, believed to result from the multiplicity of assessment criteria. However, the literature review reveals that translation scholars attribute different reasons to the decreased level of objectivity in current TQA practices. This study hypothesises that although subjectivity in TQA cannot be eliminated, it can be reduced to a more acceptable level if quality assessment adopts the criteria believed by translation scholars to lend more objectivity to the assessment. The most common approaches used in TQA are either based on error analysis or holistic assessment. As both approaches promise to be objective, this study empirically investigates the differences in the applicability of each with regards to the objectivity criteria proposed by specialists in the field. To this end, four Arab Spring presidential speeches selected for the purpose of this study are assessed by both approaches. Contrastive analysis of these speeches is carried out in order to identify how each approach reduces the subjectivity inherent to TQA. Furthermore, the error analysis model employed in this study is adapted from the theory of textuality proposed by Beaugrande and Dressler in 1981. Given that the seven standards in the original model do not encompass all the elements of the source text language (Arabic), amending the original model is necessary. In examining the applicability of the proposed adapted model as one that aids translators and evaluators with the assessment of Arabic-English translations, this study resulted in introducing new criteria of assessment in the standards of cohesion, coherence and informativity. This study also contributes to the field by empirically examining the differences between the outcome of the application of the two main approaches of translation quality assessment, i.e., error analysis approach and holistic approach; and identifying how each method reduces the level of subjectivity to quality assessment.

O objetivo deste estudo foi apresentar a tradução para a língua portuguesa do “Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering – Adults (OASES-A)”, um instrumento baseado na Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde - CIF (Organização Mundial da Saúde), e já validado nos Estados Unidos. Os processos de tradução e tradução reversa foram realizados por especialistas, gerando uma versão brasileira do OASES-A que possui equivalência semântica, conceitual, cultural e idiomática. O OASES-A avalia o transtorno da gagueira pela perspectiva do próprio sujeito que gagueja, em relação a informações gerais da gagueira, reações à gagueira, comunicação nas situações diárias e o impacto da gagueira sobre a qualidade de vida. Pode também ser usado com outros instrumentos clínicos de avaliação fornecendo, assim, dados sobre o impacto da gagueira no individuo que a manifesta. A versão adaptada para o português do OASES-A para avaliar sujeitos que gaguejam tem por finalidade fornecer subsídios ao profissional especializado tanto para avaliação quanto para terapêutica do sujeito que gagueja, propiciando um tratamento mais eficaz e efetivo.
The objective of this study was to translate and adapt to Portuguese the “ Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering - Adults – Adults (OASES-A), an instrument based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability,& Health-ICF(World Health Organization), which has already been validated in the United States of America. The process of translation and back-translation was carried out by specialists who respected semantic, conceptual, cultural and idiomatic characteristics. The OASES-A assesses stuttering from the perspective of the stutterer himself including communicative difficulty and impact on quality of life. The adapted to Portuguese version of the OASES –A for available people who stuttering intended provide the specialists informations about stutters avaliation and terapy in order to provide them with a more effective treatment.

Работа посвящена сравнению качества перевода технического текста с английского языка на русский, полученного с помощью различных систем машинного перевода (СМП), на примере научной статьи металлургической тематики “Fluid Dynamics Studies of Bottom-blown and Side-blown Copper Smelting Furnaces”. В первой части работы рассматриваются общие вопросы машинного и технического перевода: приводятся понятия машинного перевода и технического перевода, определяются основные способы и алгоритмы работы СМП, выделяются основные особенности и проблемы технического перевода. Особое внимание уделяется выявлению функциональных возможностей наиболее популярных сервисов машинного перевода, к которым относятся такие СМП как Google Translate, Яндекс Переводчик, Bing Microsoft Translator, SYSTRAN Translate, PROMT.One. Во второй части работы раскрываются особенности металлургической терминологии и специфика ее заимствования, разрабатывается методика оценки качества перевода технического текста металлургической направленности, проводится апробационное исследование переводов, выполненных с помощью различных систем машинного перевода и определяются перспективы использования СМП в металлургической отрасли. Большое внимание уделяется оценке качества переводов по представленным методикам, при этом все результаты приводятся в виде таблиц с указанием количества ошибок и итоговых баллов. Результаты исследования могут быть использованы на различных предприятиях металлургического сектора при работе с документацией на иностранных языках.
This paper is devoted to comparison of translation quality obtained as a result of using machine translation (MT) systems to translate technical documents from English into Russian in the case of a metallurgical article “Fluid Dynamics Studies of Bottom-blown and Side-blown Copper Smelting Furnaces”. The first part of the paper covers general issues of machine and technical translation, including concepts of machine and technical translation, the main operation methods and algorithms, and the main features of technical translation. Particular attention is paid to identification of core functionality of the most popular machine translation systems, which include Google Translate, Yandex Translate, Bing Microsoft Translator, SYSTRAN Translate, PROMT.One. The second part of the paper reveals the main features of metallurgical terminology and the specifics of its naturalization. It also contains several translation quality assessment methodologies and includes an analysis of machine translation quality. Moreover, it features the main prospects for using MT systems in metallurgy. Much attention is paid to translation quality assessment on methodologies presented in the paper. All the results are presented in the form of tables with the number of errors and final scores for each MT system. The results of the study may be used at various metallurgical enterprises working with documentation in foreign languages.

Esta tese procura demonstrar a valiosa contribuição da Lingüística de Corpus na análise do texto literário e na avaliação da tradução literária. O corpus é formado pelos textos de Dubliners (1914), uma coletânea de contos de James Joyce, e duas traduções dessa obra, ambas intituladas Dublinenses, uma de Hamilton Trevisan (1964), a outra de José Roberto O Shea (1993). Primeiramente é apresentado um panorama da Lingüística de Corpus, especialmente como uma abordagem que apresenta interfaces com os Estudos da Tradução e a Análise Literária. Em seguida é feita uma análise da obra original e, logo após, uma avaliação das traduções. Para constatar a efetiva contribuição da Lingüística de Corpus, a análise do texto original e das traduções foi realizada seguindo duas abordagens diferentes, a não computacional e a computacional. Os dados levantados foram comparados, o que permitiu estabelecer que a Lingüística de Corpus de fato representa uma abordagem que traz significativa contribuição aos processos de análise do texto literário e à avaliação de traduções literárias. Assim, foi proposto um modelo híbrido de avaliação de tradução literária, que combina características da abordagem tradicional e da Lingüística de Corpus. Esse modelo foi testado com quatro contos de Dubliners.
This thesis aims at demonstrating the valuable contribution of Corpus Linguistics in the analysis of literary texts and in the evaluation of literary translation. The selected texts are Dubliners (1914), a collection of short stories by James Joyce, and two translations thereof, both entitled Dublinenses, one by Hamilton Trevisan (1964), and the other by José Roberto O Shea (1993). Firstly, an analysis of the original work is carried out and, after that, the evaluation of translations. In order to verify the effective contribution of Corpus Linguistics, an analysis of the original text and its translations was performed, using two different approaches, a non computational as well as a computational one. The data thus obtained were compared and, as a result, it could be established that Corpus Linguistics really represents an approach which makes a significant contribution to the processes of literary text analysis and the evaluation of literary translations. Therefore, a model for the evaluation of literary translations was proposed, bringing together characteristics of the traditional approach and that of Corpus Linguistics. This model was then tested on four short stories from Dubliners.

INTRODUÇÃO: Há pouco tempo atrás não havia ferramenta específica para avaliar os sintomas do trato urinário inferior de pacientes com doenças neurológicas. Diversos instrumentos foram desenvolvidos e recomendados para avaliação de sintomas urinários em pacientes com disfunção do trato urinário inferior, porém, por não captarem a especificidade da bexiga neurogênica, apresentam perguntas inaplicáveis ou insuficientes para avaliar os sintomas desta população. Em 2014 foi introduzido o Neurogenic Bladder Symptom Score (NBSS) específico para pacientes com diagnóstico de bexiga neurogênica. Contém questões sobre incontinência urinária, sintomas e métodos de esvaziamento vesical, complicações associadas à disfunção miccional e qualidade de vida. OBJETIVO: este estudo se propôs a realizar a adaptação cultural e validação do questionário de sintomas NBSS para o português do Brasil. MÉTODOS: O questionário de sintomas foi adaptado culturalmente conforme diretrizes internacionais, seguindo os passos de: tradução, harmonização, retrotradução, revisão do comitê de especialistas, e teste da versão pré-final. A versão adaptada para o Brasil foi aplicada em pacientes com diagnóstico de bexiga neurogênica por lesão medular ou esclerose múltipla, que compareceram para consultas médicas com fisiatra ou urologista. Os mesmos pacientes responderam novamente o questionário num intervalo de 7 a 14 dias (reteste). A confiabilidade foi avaliada pela consistência interna, através do alfa de Cronbach, e pela estabilidade (teste-reteste), avaliada pelo Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse. Pacientes que não retornaram para a reaplicação do questionário, ou que relataram mudança nos sintomas do trato urinário inferior durante este período, foram excluídos da análise de estabilidade. A validade de critério foi avaliada pela aplicação da versão brasileira do questionário de qualidade de vida Qualiveen-SF e o resultado foi mensurado através do Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse. A validade de conteúdo foi determinada pela avaliação e julgamento do comitê de especialistas. A validade de construto foi obtida pela comparação entre o NBSS e a avaliação da função global da bexiga, através da análise de variância. RESULTADOS: Um total de 68 pacientes (57 homens - 83,8%) com idade média de 38,9 (± 14,7) anos participaram do estudo. Observou-se boa consistência interna da versão em português, com alfa de Cronbach de 0,813. A estabilidade (teste/reteste) também foi alta, com um Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse de 0,8596 [0,7586-0,9202] (p < 0,0001). Na validade de critério, o Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse revelou moderada correlação entre a versão em português do NBSS e o questionário Qualiveen-SF (r=0,6552 [0,423-0.8151]; p < 0,0001). CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados do estudo demonstraram que a versão brasileira do NBSS - Neurogenic Bladder Symptom Score, apresenta boa consistência interna, estabilidade e capacidade de medir o construto correto. O processo de adaptação cultural e validação do questionário NBSS para língua portuguesa, em pacientes com disfunção neurogênica do trato urinário inferior, foi concluído. O instrumento encontra-se apto para uso clínico e em pesquisa
INTRODUCTION: Until recent times, there was no specific tool to evaluate the symptoms of the lower urinary tract of patients with neurological diseases. Several instruments have been developed and recommended for evaluation of urinary symptoms in patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction, but because they do not capture the specificity of the neurogenic bladder, they present questions that are inapplicable or insufficient to evaluate the symptoms of this population. In 2014 it was introduced the Neurogenic Bladder Symptom Score (NBSS), specific for patients with a neurogenic bladder diagnosis. It contains questions about urinary incontinence, symptoms and methods of bladder emptying, complications associated with voiding dysfunction and quality of life. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to perform the cultural adaptation and validation of the NBSS questionnaire for the Brazilian Portuguese. METHODS: The symptom questionnaire was culturally adapted according to international guidelines, following the steps of: translation, synthesis, back-translation, expert committee review, and pre-final version test. The version adapted for Brazil was applied in patients with neurogenic bladder diagnosis due to spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis, who attended for medical appointments with physiatrist or urologist. The same patients answered the questionnaire again within 7 to 14 days (retest). Reliability was assessed by internal consistency, using Cronbach\'s alpha, and stability (test-retest), as assessed by Intraclass Correlation Coefficient. Patients who did not return for questionnaire reapplication or who reported changes in lower urinary tract symptoms during this period were excluded from the stability analysis. The criterion validity was evaluated by applying the Brazilian version of the Qualiveen-SF quality of life questionnaire and the result was measured using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient. The validity of content was determined by the evaluation and judgment of the committee of experts. The construct validity was obtained by the comparison between the NBSS and the evaluation of the global function of the bladder, through analysis of variance. RESULTS: A total of 68 patients (57 men - 83.8%) with an average age of 38.9 (± 14.7) years participated in the study. There was good internal consistency of the Portuguese version, with Cronbach\'s alpha of 0.813. Stability (test / retest) was also high, with a Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.8596 [0.7586-0.9202] (p < 0.0001). For criterion validity, the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient revealed a moderate correlation between the Portuguese version of the NBSS and the Qualiveen-SF questionnaire (r = 0.6552 [0.423-0.8151]; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study demonstrated that the Brazilian version of the NBSS - Neurogenic Bladder Symptom Score shows good internal consistency, stability and ability to measure the correct construct. The process of cultural adaptation and validation of the NBSS questionnaire for Portuguese language in patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction was concluded. The instrument is suitable for clinical and research use

Undergraduate students at the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) experience great difficulty in developing their translation competence during their training period. On the one hand, they show many signs of poor quality during their training when they accomplish practical translation assignments on and off-campus. On the other hand, the quality of the final work submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Bachelor Honours Degree (Licenciatura) suggests that most students fail to go beyond the minimum standards with regard to translation competence. Yet, comprehensive research aimed at understanding factors hindering translation competence at the UEM has been scanty. Besides, the few studies available have some significant lacunae, for they focus on Portuguese language development; are limited to error analysis, and often ignore students‟ perspectives. Consequently, the problem of finding a balanced approach to developing students‟ translation competence has remained unaddressed. Therefore, this study has been conducted with the purpose of investigating the translation competence of the UEM undergraduates in order to establish the major obstacles to their translation competence development, and consequently come up with suggestions for improving the current translator-training degree programme. The study design uses qualitative methods translated into a case study approach. First, questionnaire data is analysed to gain lecturers‟ and students‟ perspectives on translation competence at the UEM. Second, a students‟ error typology is developed following a macro- and micro-textual analysis of their translations. The study concludes that substandard bilingual skills, compounded by curricular, attitudinal/motivational, pedagogical and infrastructural/instrumental factors, negatively impact the students‟ development of translation competence at the UEM and that addressing these may pave the way towards improving the current translation-training programme.

"How we judge whether a translation is good or bad?" has been extensively discussed at great length as a controversial and fundamental issue. We attempt to revisit this issue through Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the best-selling novel around the world at the turn of twenty-first century. The translation quality we assessed in this study was proceeded qualitatively by the criteria of "translation equivalence" in terms of text-specific factors and receptor-specific factors. The main purpose of this study was to investigate how to produce a more appropriate translation text responding to the specific requirement of readership. Moreover, we analyzed the responses collected from the children''s participants to provide translators the essential reference of readers'' difficulty they encountered while reading translated literature. This study also investigated the procedures of formulating a text modification for special purposes, here for children''s readership, by secondary operations to original translation. We invited fifteen children of the age between ten and twelve as participants in this study. By examining five passages around 650 words, they were required to locate the translation problems and wrote down their responses to those translation problems. Secondly, we invited three linguists and experienced translators to review translation equivalence between source and target texts and then two elementary teachers to work on the text modification according to the features of children''s language. The results confirmed that children readership has special requirement for translation. If the readership were unpredictable for translators while proceeding translation, a secondary text modification would be an essential work especially for children readership. Also we investigated a feasible procedure for text modification. To derive a more appropriate translation for children''s literature, such a procedure of text modification is recommended.

Abstract:
Although Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) has the longest history of BA Honours level translator and interpreter training in Mozambique, the university still lacks an effective model for the development of translation and interpreting competence in students. To address this problem, the present study seeks to find a practical model for the training of Mozambican professional translators and interpreters at BA Honours level that can guide the design of conducive curricula. The critical question the study attempts to answer is: What model for developing translation and interpreting competence could lead to an effective curriculum design that best meets the employment needs of Mozambican students? To this end, the study has been designed as action-research because this design enables better understanding and improvement of training processes (Cravo & Neves 2007). Three data collection tools are used to generate both qualitative and quantitative data from over 120 participants, namely: (i) a survey, (ii) an English translation test and (iii) a sample of archived Portuguese translations produced by former students. The survey findings suggest the need for a model whereby translators and interpreters are trained simultaneously within the same programme. Moreover, the results of macro- and micro-textual analysis show that, overall, the translation competence of former students is poor, suggesting that the current curriculum at UEM is failing to produce BA Honours translation/interpreting professionals. The proposed solution would be a curriculum based on a new integrated translation and interpreting competence development model with the following four pillars: communicative competence, general knowledge, strategic competence and service provision.

O presente relatório diz respeito ao estágio curricular na empresa de tradução EurologosLisboa / Certas Palavras, Lda. e tem como tema a terminologia da tradução em Portugal. Na primeira parte, descreve-se a experiência de estágio e introduz-se os termos que serão alvo de discussão na segunda parte. O papel do estágio na formação de um tradutor, ao estabelecer a ponte entre o contexto académico e o profissional, serve de mote à problemática da terminologia da disciplina e atividade e culmina na criação de um pequeno glossário bilíngue (PT-EN). Ainda que o objetivo inicial se prenda com a necessidade pessoal de esclarecer algumas dúvidas de cariz terminológico, espera-se também que este trabalho possa contribuir para uma maior solidez da terminologia portuguesa da disciplina.
This report documents my curricular internship at the translation company EurologosLisboa / Certas Palavras, Lda. and features “the terminology of translation in Portugal” as its main subject. The first part describes the internship experience and introduces the terms that are object of discussion in the second part. Exploring the role of this internship in my translator training process, as a bridge between the academic and professional spheres, led me to research the terminology of both worlds in Portugal. This effort ultimately resulted in the creation of a short bilingual glossary (PT-EN). Although the initial goal stems from a personal need to understand certain terminological quandaries, I also hope this report constitutes a meaningful contribution to improve the consistency of the Portuguese terminology of translation.

O presente trabalho de projeto pretende contribuir para a compreensão do chamado briefing de tradução e analisar os mecanismos que intervêm na conceção de briefs; por outro lado, pretende aferir a sua utilidade no decorrer do processo tradutório e as vantagens que oferecem para os sistemas de controlo da qualidade. Serão analisados os critérios e princípios que devem reger a elaboração de briefs e os elementos a integrar em tal instrumento, numa estreita relação com os tipos de texto e a análise discursiva. Com base numa abordagem empírica situada sobretudo numa fase pré-tradutória, pretende-se propor um modelo dinâmico-funcional de brief de tradução construído a partir da proposta de Nord e associado a diferentes tipos de texto, a saber: pragmático, técnico, científico e literário. O produto dessa reflexão visa comprovar a utilidade deste instrumento e contribuir para uma mudança de cultura na prática tradutória, tendo como principal objetivo desmistificar a crença de que o brief de tradução possui um valor meramente académico, bem como reforçar as suas qualidades enquanto instrumento central da tomada de decisão e de controlo da qualidade em tradução.
This project aims to make a contribution to understanding translation briefs and analyse the mechanisms involved in the design of briefs; it also aims to assess their usefulness in the translation process and the advantages they provide in terms of quality control systems. There is an analysis of the criteria and principles governing briefs and the individual aspects included in them, in strict accordance with the type of text and discursive analysis. Based on an empirical approach, particularly focused on a pre-translation stage, the aim is to present a functional-dynamic translation brief model built on the foundations of Nord’s proposal and associated with various text types, such as: pragmatic, technical, scientific and literary. The result of such a reflection aims to demonstrate the usefulness of this tool and contribute to a cultural change in translation practice, with the main objective of dispelling the belief that translation briefs are purely academic in nature, as well as consolidating their usefulness as a key mechanism for decision-making and quality control in translation.

Abstract:
Due to physical, cognitive and emotional impairments, many individuals are unemployed or under-employed following a traumatic brain injury. The research evidence links the rigour of a vocational evaluation to future employment outcomes. Despite this link, no specific guidelines exist for vocational evaluations. Using the research evidence and a diverse panel of clinical and academic experts, the primary objective of this doctoral research was to develop an inter-professional clinical practice guideline for vocational evaluation following traumatic brain injury. The objective of the guideline is to make explicit the processes and factors relevant to vocational evaluation, to assist evaluators (i.e. clients, health and vocational professionals, and employers) in collaboratively determining clients’ work abilities and developing recommendations for work entry, re-entry or vocational planning. The steps outlined in the Canadian Medical Association's Handbook on Clinical Practice Guidelines were utilized to develop the guideline and include the following: 1) identifying the guideline’s objective/questions; 2) performing a systematic literature review; 3) gathering a panel; 4) developing recommendations; 4) guideline writing; 5) pilot testing. The resulting guideline includes 17 key recommendations within the following seven domains: 1) evaluation purpose and rationale; 2) initial intake process; 3) assessment of the personal domain; 4) assessment of the environment; 5) assessment of occupational/job requirements; 6) analysis and synthesis of assessment results; and 7) development of evaluation recommendations. Results from an exploratory study of the guideline’s implementation by occupational therapists in their daily practices revealed that clinicians used the guideline to identify practice gaps, systematize their evaluation processes, enhance inter-professional and inter-stakeholder communication, and re-conceptualize their vocational evaluations across disability groups. Statistically significant improvements were also noted in clients’ participation scores on the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory–4 following guideline use. This guideline may be applicable to individuals with TBI, clinicians, health and vocational professionals, employers, professional organizations, administrators, policy makers and insurers.
