Abstract:
This article examines how the time of translation can influence the translation strategy the translator chooses when translating modern and historical realia. The material for the research was six Russian translations of Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The author chose three realia (moccasins, Pain-killer, clerk), which fit the definition of modern and historical realia provided at the beginning of the article. With the help of the dictionaries published at the same time as the various translations, the author analyzed the strategies the translators used when translating those realia. The research results are of practical importance for translators tackling the problem of translating modern and historical realia.

It is determined that it is important for a translator of a startup project to understand all the features of using the software, choose the appropriate programs or online tools and develop a strategy for the translation process in the project. Abstract:
Children’s literature occupies a peripheral position in literature system according to the polysystem theory so that the translators of children’s literature can manipulate the texts with great liberty. The translator of children’s literature in the ternary relation of translation, namely the source texts, the translator and the target text, is in a relatively important position. Thus, it is a feasible way to analyze the translation of children’s literature from the translator-centered perspective. Eco-translatology is a translator-centered translation theory, aiming to analyze how the translator selects and adapts during the translation process in the translational eco-environment. In this paper, the author will adopt Eco-translatology as the translation framework to analyze the translation of children’s literature, and try to explore how ‘children’, an important factor in the translational eco-environment, influences the translator’s selection and adaptation in the process of translating children’s literature. Furthermore, the author will take Peter Pan as a case study, comparing two Chinese versions of this book to analyze how the two translators adapt and select differently from those three dimensions during the translation process, as one follows the target-reader-oriented strategy and the other one follows the source-text-oriented strategy.

Abstract:
This research attempts to find out the strategy used by the translator in translating Balinese terms also to explain the accuracy of the translated terms. The data used in this research were in the form of phrases in the book entitled Tigang Satua Bali by Sutjaja (2007). The data collection was done through reading and note taking techniques. The data then were analyzed using theory of translation strategy and accuracy. The result showed that the strategy used within the translation of Balinese terms into target languages (Indonesian and English) are translation by paraphrase, related word, loan phrase, and cultural substitution. Then the accuracy levels of the translation strategy are in three criteria, namely correct, misguided, and unclear.

<p>In translating brochure, a translator has to make a decision on the basis of the message and purpose. The translator is faced by two strategies of translation – foreignization and domestication. The purpose of the study is to examine how the interrelationship between cultural term translation and foreignization or domestication strategy in the cultural term translation of tourism brochure from Indonesian into English. This study used qualitative descriptive with discourse analysis strategy. The note-taking technique is used to identify and classify the data. The objects of the study are tourism brochures from Province of Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java in 2015. The findings show that the translation strategies used depend on the translation process. When the cultural terms are familiar, translator tends to use domestication strategy and consider the target text. Translator chooses domestication strategy because try to make tourist understand the text and produce communicative and natural translation. On the other hand, when cultural terms are foreign, translator using foreignization strategy and consider source text. Using foreignization strategy, translator tends to introduce traditional cultural term.</p>

The commercial success of any business enterprise in the age of globalization and internationalization depends on the choice of marketing strategy. To remain competitive, all industries must follow new trends and face new challenges. In the context of the current market requirements, a new strategy for translating advertisements and slogans called transcreation has been attracting more attention and is an emergent trend for the Ukrainian market. In this study, we examine the phenomenon of transcreation and present an analysis of texts resulting from the application of the translation strategy. The problem of advertisement translation has been attracting attention of the modern linguists as the main task of a translator is 1) to choose the appropriate translation strategy so as 2) to clearly convey to the recipient the intended information of the original text considering all implicit as well as explicit shades of original message. One of the challenges in translating advertisements is the preservation of the communicative functions embedded in the original text or slogan. In our work, we covered the concept of "transcreation", analysed the translation of advertising slogans of world-famous German companies, as well as conducted a psycho-linguistic experiment using an online Google Forms questionnaire. Fifty-two informants evaluated nuances of the meanings on which advertising slogans and their translations were focused by transcreation. The results of our study can be used in training programs for future translators. Abstract:
According to books of grammar, a causative form is an expression of an agent causing or forcing a person to perform an action. Translation of English causatives into Persian seems to be one of the biggest problems that Translation students and novice translators usually come across. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the translation strategies applied by the professional translator and translation trainees while translating English causatives into Persian. In this descriptive corpus-based study, the present researcher examined sixty causative constructions of novel Lord of The Flies by Gerald (1991) and their Persian translation by Mansouri (2003). In addition, twenty causative constructions from the novel were given to the twenty Translation students in order to analyze their Persian translations of causative constructions. Based on the finding, the professional translator has used Non-causative and Positive Implication strategies most frequently, whereas the students have used Auxiliary and Noncausative strategies most frequently. It can be concluded that there is a strategy behind every choice, and a reason behind every strategy, and translators should try their best to transfer all the components of a causative verb as well as possible, because each word or verb has its own value. The translator's mastery over the causative construction in the language pair explores throughout this study reminds us of a point of paramount significance. The main implication of this research may make the translators, at any level, better understand the English causative sentences and avoid producing translations that hinder communication between the translator and the readers.

When translation is considered as an integral part of larger social systems (Even-Zohar 1990), the ways in which translations are produced to serve readers’ specificity could be affected. This paper examines whether there is a preference for a specific global translation strategy due to a readership that is specialized in terms of education level. Adopting Venuti’s (1995/2008) division of global translation strategies into exoticizing and domesticating translation, it examines the frequency of local translation strategies, which are part of a global translation strategy, used in translating English-Thai religious markers in Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, Inferno and Origin. The religious markers cover words/phrases of belief systems in either Eastern or Western culture. The results show that exoticizing translation is a dominant global translation strategy that translation agents, such as translators and editors, use in literary translations of Anglo-American novels.

This thesis is to analyze problems arising out of the rendition of the Sutra, such as limited preparation, time management, knowledge background and translation skills used during the translating process. Psychological aspect of the translator is also discussed in this thesis, esp. the contradiction between the Buddhistic teachings, vegetarianism and physical strength of the translator plus a solution. Cultural aspect of translation is also considered in the thesis. The results of the experience are: knowledge background is the premise to select the best original and pull through the translating; the translator’s traits might have a say in the translating dynamics; time management is significantly important in translation; contradicting elements might be resolved by psychological meditation; translating tools and tactics might affect the speed of translation while translation strategy might have an over-riding role during the translation through solving contradiction between ethics and strategy; in turn, the choice is to further clarify the definition of translation and interpretation as a whole.

Translation allows readers to enjoy literary works from all over the world without being constrained by foreign language mastery. For Producing commensurate literary works, translation strategies are employed to deal with different language systems. This research aims at investigating strategies employed by the translator in translating the Indonesian literary work into English. This Descriptive-Analytical Study has been completed by qualitative and quantitative methods. The data sources used are the Indonesian short story Apel and Pisau by Intan Paramaditha and its translation. The 219 collected data are analyzed by using Kazakova’s theory of literary translation. The results in this study indicate that the translator used (1) The Observer Strategy 70,78% (155 data), (2) The Helper Strategy 23,74 % (52 data), (3) The Adherent Strategy 3,65 % (8 data), and (4) The Enlightener Strategy 1,83% (4 data). The study reveals that the strategy dominantly prevailed is the observer strategy (70,78%), and the most dominant approach is unbiased (74,71 %). Also, it is found that the translation ideology is foreignization, where the translator tries to keep the sense of originality of the author’s work.

Abstract:
A longitudinal mediated asynchronous procedural experimental study is presented, the purpose of which is to demonstrate the correlation between the discourse and communication translation model and the translation strategy. Subjects’ retrospective self- and peer commentaries are analyzed. It is shown that the subjects’ evaluation of translation solutions implemented in the target text is based on their own translations and translating objectives, as reflected both in the self- and peer commentaries. The following translation dominants are revealed by the experiment: target text audience (recipient); source text style; source text type (genre), target text type (genre); individual linguistic features of the target text; discourse goals; discourse nodal points; discourse values; communication functions; typical properties of communication; and communication strategies. It is demonstrated that the discourse and communication translation model has a positive effect on the consistency and the degree of detail of source text analysis, and allows translators to make more informed decisions. It is noted that if changes in the target text are mainly caused by the translator’s decision to make corrections when re-accessing the text, these changes reflect the described translation dominants. It is shown that the model indirectly affects the quality of translation, depending on the degree of implementation of the translation strategy, taking the additional factors into account.

Abstract:
Translating Shakespeare into Arabic is a century-old cultural project which is still a source of challenge for translators who adopt a source-text-oriented approach that attempts to simulate the original in content, form and impact. Shakespeare’s texts are rife with metaphoric language which serves multiple functions on the cognitive, cultural, pragmatic as well as stylistic levels. This paper aims to analyse the translation of literary metaphors from a stylistic perspective in Mohamed Enani’s version of Othello. The analysis is conducted in the framework of conceptual metaphor theory which provides a microscopic description of how metaphors are influenced by the translation process. The findings of the analysis unveil the translation strategy adopted by Enani to reflect the stylistic function of metaphors while preserving their cognitive content and reveals that translating metaphors is influenced by the cognitive and professional background of the translator. Amplification emerges as a successful translation strategy which is used to extend metaphors creatively thus adding cognitive value to the Source Text content and compensating for a possible loss in the style of the Target Text. This paper concludes that, contrary to the prevalent assumptions, a source-text-oriented approach can deliver an accurate yet stylistically-functional translation if the translator is creative enough and willing to exert an additional cognitive effort similar to that exerted by the original writer. Enani’s translations of Shakespeare into Arabic are worth a life-long research project on the translation of style in literature.

This study discusses the use of translation strategies in translating Indonesian culture-bound words in two Indonesia tourism website articles. By using a descriptive qualitative analysis method, the translation strategies found in the Indonesian culture-bound words were observed using the theory from Mona Baker (2018). The rank of the most dominant strategies, from the most frequent to the least, used by both translator teams of Wonderful Indonesia and Enjoy Jakarta are loan word with an explanation, word-for-word, cultural substitution, and general word. In the Indonesia culture-bound translation, the most strategy used the culture-bound words is loan word strategy. It is better because instead of translating the Indonesia culture-bound word, the writer keep the culture-bound word in the english version and explain the meaning of the culture-bound word from explaining the history or the ingredients behind the culture-bound words so the international tourists can know the meaning behind the Indonesia culture-bound words without changing the names. In conclusion, both translator teams mostly used loan word strategy as their main strategy in the English translation, but still used other strategy in certain Indonesia culture-bound words.Keywords: translation, translation strategies, culture-bound words

Abstract:
Modern translation studies which are of descriptive nature mainly presuppose the opportunity of altering the function of the source text in translation, reconstruction of sense and structure in correspondence with the aim of translation. The investigation has been carried out in the framework of the communicativefunctional approach to translation which accounts for the entire spectrum of linguistic and extra linguistic factors influencing translation in the broad sense. This fact proves the relevance of the article. The translations of both narrations intended for the children’s audience exclusively conform to the ideology of the children’s fiction aimed at socialization and attraction of young addressees. It results in the loss of the worldview reflection by the originals and focusing on reproducing their fairy–tale plots. The applied readdressing translation strategy has been implemented by the following tactics: the tactic of relevant information rendering, the tactic of pragmatic adaptation of the source text, the tactic of stylistic features rendering, the tactic of the source text formal and structural features rendering. Common operations for the applied tactics have proved to be as following: search for a variant equivalent, omission, restructuring and compensation. The compensation technique has turned out to be the most universal operation within the applied translation tactics. This fact can be explained by the complex nature of transformations the source text is subjected to, the need to omit, rearrange amounts of information and to preserve the chosen genre along with its adaptation for the potential addressee.

The title of this writing is strategy of translating gadget brochure. There were two problems discussed in this thesis, namely (1) terms found in the gadget manual book and its equivalence in Indonesia, (2) strategies applied in translating gadget brochure. Based on the analysis result, it was found that the terms and its equivalent words found in the gadget brochure were classified based on: 1) simple words or compound words and terminology forming phrase. 2) words category found are: noun and verb. The recommended pattern to determine the equivalent word was pure borrowing strategy, not adaptation borrowing strategy. The adaptation borrowing in this context was related to the spellings, the pronunciation or sound adaptation in the TL rather than adaptation for the cultural substitutes that conceptually mismatches with the standardized terminology in the SL. In addition, the result of the analysis that there were seven strategies found in gadget brochure, they were translation by more general word (Superordinate), translation by a more neutral/expressive word, translation by cultural substitution, translation by using loan word or loan word plus explanation, translation by paraphrase using related word, translation by omission and translation by illustration. Poetry is the perfect combination of form and content. Therefore, poetry translation should faithfully translate the original form and content. In other words, foreignization could be the best translation strategy for poetry translation, especially for those poems with distinctive formal characteristics, such as the poems of Emily Dickinson, a 19th-century American poetess. Currently, there have been 17 Chinese translations of Dickinson's poetry published in China, with few of them using a foreignization strategy; most of these translations fail to faithfully reproduce the original flavor of Dickinson's poetry. This study takes the only version of the current 17 translations that adopts the foreignization strategy, Zhou Jianxin's translated book, Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson: 601-900, as a research object to investigate Zhou's translation of poetic form and vocabulary through data statistics and textual analysis. It is found that Zhou has basically reproduced original punctuation marks and lexical connotations and achieved equivalence of lexical function and meaning in lexical translation. Zhou's translation shows no traces of translation. That is, it reads natural and fluent. It retains original thought-provoking content and form and is a successful example of adopting a foreignization strategy to translate Dickinson's poems into Chinese, which justifies that the application of foreignization strategy in the Chinese translation of Dickinson's poetry is not only necessary but also feasible, which is the purpose of this study. It is expected that this study should encourage more Chinese translators to apply the foreignization strategy in translating Dickinson's poetry in the future so as to further enhance the quality of Chinese translation of Dickinson's poetry and present a truer and more authentic image of Dickinson's poetry in the Chinese world.

Abstract:
This research aims to describe and analyze the strategy used in translating Dīwān al-Imām al-Syāfi`ī. All analyzed data were taken from the translation of Dīwān al-Imām al-Syāfi`ī using dynamic equivalence technique. The method used in conducting this research is distributional review, starting from describing, filtering, classifying, and analyzing the data. Analysis process starts from choosing the translation strategy used in translating the text, then classify each data based on the strategy. After that, the classified data is being analyzed by stating which strategy category is used and what would probably be the reason for the translator to chose that specific strategy. The result shows that there are four translation strategies used by the translator in translating Dīwān al-Imām al-Syāfi`ī. Those translation strategies are replacing words order (taqdīm wa ta’khīr), loss (inqāṣ), gain (ziyādah), and substitution (tabdīl). For loss and gain strategies, there are another two categories which are avertable and inavertable. Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher then conclude that the main reason for the translator in choosing to use these strategies is the presence of linguistic and non-linguistic differences. Linguistic difference is indicated at patterns of sentence, uslūb and the dilālah between the two languages. As for the non-linguistic difference is related with cultural differences between the two languages.

The unfolding hybridisation of cultures calls for a culture-oriented approach to translation that could respond to the needs and expectations of contemporary readership. The present paper is devoted to the concept of the cultural turn in translation studies and its practical implications on actual translations of contemporary literary works. To illustrate the complexities of translating cultural elements, the Polish translation of Fury reflecting the usual Rushdian blend of voices, plots, multi-cultural hybrid and culture references is used. The paper seeks to exemplify and discuss choices made by the translator striving to acquaint the target text reader with the complex universe of the novel to the similar extent as experienced by the source text reader. The principal strategy adopted by the Polish translator might be labelled as domesticated exoticism.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the history of translations and the reasons for translating the Roman classics into Ukrainian in the late twentieth to early twenty-first centuries, as illustrated by the case of Horace. Translation practices, as well as the socio-cultural status and habitus of the translator-classicist, have been varied but have intersected in many respects throughout the twentieth century. This article highlights the major developments in the approach to translating Horace throughout the twentieth century. It mostly focuses on the attitudes and strategies of Mykola Zerov and Andrii Sodomora, who are among the key figures in the twentieth-century theory and practice of translation in Ukraine. The first major development comprises the critical debate regarding translation in the 1920s initiated by Mykola Khvyl'ovyi, whose position was supported by Zerov. The article discusses both the translation practice of Zerov and his reader-oriented theory of verse translation. The second crucial point consists of the revision by Sodomora, starting from the 1980s, of a paraphrasing strategy worked out by Zerov. In his retranslation strategy, applied to his earlier translations from Horace and substantiated in his literary essays, Sodomora exhibits a positive reconsideration of the role and importance of literalist precision in translating the Roman classics, as exemplified by Horace. Sodomora’s evolving approach toward higher precision in translating the classics stems from a close reading of the authentic cultural contexts, structural poetics, philosophical messages, and hidden intertextuality of the source texts. Also, it resonates with Walter Benjamin’s model of literalism, which in many respects appears useful when applied to post-Soviet literary conditions in Ukraine.

Abstract This article presents a method for the establishment and description of shifts in integral translations of narrative texts. The method is based on the premise that both micro- and macrostructural shifts in translation can furnish indications of the translational norms adopted by the translator, his interpretation of the original text and the strategy applied during the process of translation. In the first installment of the article (Target 1:2) the first component of the method was discussed, acomparative model for the classification of microstructural shifts. In addition, the theoretical basis of the second component, the descriptive model, was presented, focusing on the effects of microstructural shifts on the macrostructural level. The second installment gives a detailed explanation of the descriptive model (Section 4) and a brief account of the results which were obtained when the method was applied.

The practice of teaching translation was often done by discussing translation theories and translating texts in the classroom. However, the problem is students also need to have a real-life experience as professional translators that will be useful for them in the future. This paper presents the findings of a research study conducted in a translation class of English Education Department students in the State Islamic University of North Sumatra. The research is about Translation Agency Project as innovation strategy to teach translation subject. The students were assigned to develop their own translation agency by promoting their agency, handling the clients, and translating the texts. The objective of this research is to identify the challenges faced by the students in running their Translation Agency Project. It also includes how students cope with those challenges. Finally, it describes the benefits of using Translation Agency Project in teaching translation. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method for translation studies (Toury, 1995) based on theoretical research compared to a survey applied to students of English Education Department who have learned about translation theories. As a result, after analyzing the data, it can be seen that the biggest challenge the students faced in conducting their translation agency is advertising the translation agency (43%), meeting with clients (36%), and translating the texts (21%). Finally, after analyzing the survey, it shows that translation Agency Project is an effective and recommended strategy to teach translation theories in the class.

The function of translation is to convey meaning or message from source language text into target language text. However, in translating, the translator will face some problems, for example is the translation of repetitive Indonesian adjectives. This study investigates how repetitive Indonesian adjectives are translated into English. Indonesian has repetitive adjectives such as tinggi-tinggi, cantik-cantik, and jauh-jauh and the English translation of the repetition is not tall-tall, beautiful-beautiful, and far-far respectively. The method applied in this study is qualitative descriptive method. The data will be categorized and classified and then analyzed in accordance with the principle, translation strategies, and relevant theories. The result of the study shows that literal translation strategy and transposition strategy are the most frequent strategy used by the translator. Some of them are translated in the different form grammatically but the meaning of the message in source language is well maintained into the target language. The principle of translation employed by the translator to translate Indonesian repetitive adjective is meaning.

This article discusses Indonesian—Poetry translation. The purpose of this article is to describe the strategies of translating poetry of Chairil Anwar by Raffel Raffel in “The Complete Prose and Poetry of Chairil Anwar”, a book written and edited by Raffel Raffel. In order to reach the purpose, the poetries of the source language are compared with the poetries of the target language in order to find out the strategy used in the translation. The method applied in this study is a qualitative descriptive analysis of the meaning. The data were analyzed by using some strategies of translation theory in general given by Newmark, Vinay and Dalberhet, Baker, and Hoed and the strategy of translating poetry by Lavefere. The result of the analysis shows that the general translation strategy used in the translation of Chairil Anwar Poetries are modulation translation, calque or literal translation, descriptive equivalence translation, generic words translation, additional translation and interpretation translation. Meanwhile the strategies of translating poetry used by Raffel are metrical translation, rhymed translation, blank verse translation, and interpretation translation.AbstrakPenelitian ini membahas penerjemahan puisi bahasa Indonesia kedalam bahasa Inggris. Tujuannya adalah mendeskripsikan strategi penejemahan puisi-puisi Chairil Anwar oleh Raffel Raffel dalam bukunya yang berjudul The Complete Prose and Poetry of Chairil Anwar. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan strategi penerjemahan secara umum yang dikemukakan oleh Newmark, Vinay dan Dalberhet, Baker, and Hoed dan strategi penerjemahan puisi oleh Andre Lavefere. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa strategi penejemahan umum yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan puisi Chairil Anwar adalah strategi penerjemahan modulasi, calque atau penerjemahan literal, kesepadanan deskriptif, penerjemahan dengan kata generik atau kata yang lebih umum, penerjemahan dengan tambahan dan penerjemahan dengan pengurangan. Sedangkan strategi penerjemahan puisi yang digunakan oleh Raffel adalah penerjemahan metris, penerjemahan rima atau sajak, penerjemahan bait secara bebas, dan penerjemahan interpretasi.

This study aims to find out strategies used in the translation of food-related culture-specific items in Netflix cooking show, The Final Table of UK and USA episodes, and factors that influence the choice of strategies used in translating these items. The study uses discourse analysis as a research design relying on corpuses or food terminologies in Indonesian subtitle and their original as its primary data. All data were marked bold, rewritten, sorted, and classified in accordance with the identified themes of the culture-specific items. The collected data were qualitatively analyzed using Pedersen’s translation strategy, particularly for culture-specific items. The study found out that there were 51 food-related culture-specific items in the source language (SL) with their translations, and there were five translation strategies employed by the translator in rendering these items, namely retention, specification, direct translation, generalization, and substitution. Retention was the most frequently used strategy as it resembled 35 times in the data. The most common factor identified was the non-existence of the source language foodstuff terms in the target language as it existed 21 times out of 51 data. This study recommends the translators of this Netflix to consider the culture when translating from the SL to the target language (TL).

Abstract This paper explores the translatability of Qur’anic pun. With reference to a phalanx of authoritative Qur’anic exegetes and three leading Qur’anic translations, and by drawing on ʿAtīq’s (1985) taxonomy of Arabic pun, and Delabastita’s (2004) model of pun translation, the study examines a four-fold classification of pun: (1) abstract pun, (2) immediate-meaning-oriented pun, (3) far-meaning-oriented pun, and (4) aided pun. Given the semantic indirectness and sophistication immanent in punning, it is argued that Qur’anic pun, as a rhetorical device, is quite thorny from a translational standpoint. The study reveals that three out of nine translation strategies have been used: the literal strategy, the manipulative strategy, and the situational strategy. The literal strategy capitalizes on the immediate meaning, and ‘auctions off’ or ‘pulverizes’ the punning meaning, which, subsequently, may result in incommensurate translation damage. The situational strategy involves adding, for the entire translation, a descriptive word or phrase between brackets, and the manipulative strategy advocates text-in-context perspective. The study wraps up with a proposal for the interpretive strategy, which hinges upon exegesis-driven paraphrasing. This particular translation strategy has a greater emancipatory potential.

Domestication as a translation strategy has been inevitable in translation either consciously or unconsciously, even though it has been questioned by the opposite regime; foreignization for years. This comparative analysis examined the strategies of domestication applied by A. P. Gunarathne in the Sinhala translation of ‘The Village in the Jungle’ and it has been found out that wide varied strategies within the theory of domestication have been employed in translating this novel into the Sinhala language. Some of them are usual strategies whereas some are unique for this work. The present study further concludes that some kind of a domestication involves in every translation and this translation strategy still remains as an effective and well-intentioned strategy for translators to do effective translations while finding out that the theory of domestication has also been expanded into some micro-level strategies by paying much attention for the local culture of the target language in this translation.

The present publication expands the analysis of the Old Testament translations into different languages. This line of studies was initiated by the works of the late French scholar Philippe Cassuto and one of the authors of this publication. The purpose of the article is to look at the strategies applied in translating the Old Testament names of the Supreme Being into Latin (the Vulgate version) and modern Italian. This purpose is two-fold: by doing so, we also expand the data base of the Old Testament terms‘ renditions in different languages. The article provides the full nomenclature of the names of the Supreme God in the Old-Hebrew (Masoretic) text of the Old Testament, concentrates on their semantics and grammatical structure, and explains the contexts of their use. A canonical Russian-language translation is used as a reference base to illustrate the fate of the original names of the God in translation. The widely-accepted English-language translations of the Old Testament are included to provide a broader perspective on translation strategies applied to this particular aspect of the Old Testament texts. The analyzed Latin and six modern Italian-language translations demonstrate a considerable degree of uniformity in translating the names of God. The Latin and the Italian translations apply the philological strategy to translating the Holy Bible (as opposed to another option presented by the typology of the Bible translation – the ideological strategy). Notwithstanding the relative lexical uniformity of the translations, they demonstrate the differences between Catholic and Protestant versions. The analysis of the Italian translations of the Old Testament contributes to the typology of the Bible translation and ultimately makes an input to the general theory of translation.

This study was focused on the analysis of idiomatic expressions translated from English into Bahasa Indonesia from novel “The Adventure of Tom Sawyer. The analysis included on the translation strategies utilized by translator in transferring idiomatic expression and the relationship toward translation strategies and equivalence of idiomatic expression translation. The results of the study showed that (1) free translation strategy became the frequent strategy used by the translator of the novel which led to the conclusion that in rendering idiomatic expression in the children literary book was mostly done by re-creating the idiomatic expressions in the target language. (2) the translator tended to re-create the words and phrases in the target language neglecting the words and grammatical units of source language in order to get the similar meaning and essence of the source language (3) the use of translation strategies in the translation of idiomatic expression had close relationship with the resulted equivalence of idiomatic expression in Indonesian. In translating the idiomatic expression, it is better if the translator knows the context of the situation where the narrator tells about the story in the novel to improve the quality of the translation. In addition, it is also recommended that the use of translation strategy in rendering idiomatic expression should be based on the genre of the text and also the target readers in order to achieve best quality of equivalence.

The article examines the VII and X ‘Odessan Sonnets’ by Adam Miсkiewicz, which are translations of the СХІІ and LXI sonnets by Petrarch from the ‘Canzoniere’. A comparative analysis of Polish and Italian texts is carried out. The problem of the loss of VII and X ‘Odessan Sonnets’ by Adam Mickiewicz when translating this cycle into other languages is noted. The study of the translation strategy of Adam Mickiewicz suggests that these sonnets can be considered as original author’s works having intertextual connections with CXII and LXI sonnets of Francesca Petrarch. This circumstance opens up the possibility for translations VII and X ‘Odessan Sonnets’ by Adam Mickiewicz into foreign languages.

The article is dedicated to the study of the non-verbal communicative means in the aspect of translation, in particular strategies, tactics and devices of rendering non-verbal elements of speech ethiquette while translating business discourse. The theoretical grounding for the article was formed by the works by Ukrainian and foreign scholars in the field of intercultural communication. In the course of the research there have been investigated the peculiarities of the structure, semantics and functioning of the non-verbal elements of speech ethiquette. It has been proved that the incorrect interpretation of gestures, poses, look, clothes by the representatives of different cultures may result not only in the cultural and communicative barrier but also in the total failure. The research has been carried out on the basis of the scripts of business talks and conferences in English and their Ukrainian translations. It has been revealed that the dominant strategy in rendering non-verbal communicative means in translating English business discourse into Ukrainian is the strategy of re-addressing, relying on which the translator chooses translation tactics and devices.The choice of the strategy is connected with the relevance of the achievement of the communicative goal of the audience’s persuasion in this type of discourse. The leading role among the tactics is given to the tactic of rendering relevant information, tactic of liguistic and cukltureal adaptation and tactic of correct information presentation. The most recurrent translation devices are descriptive translation and contextual replacement. The perspective is seen in the more detailed analysis of each variety of non-verbal communicative means in the aspect of their rendering in translation into other languages.

This research is focused on the ability of the students in translating a recount text by using translating strategies at the first grade students of SMA Swasta Yayasan Perguruan Keluarga (YPK) Pematangsiantar. This study tries to find out: 1) The translation strategy that are used by the students in the translating of a recount text; 2) The translation strategy that is mostly used by the students in the translating of a recount text; 3) The students’ perception towards the translating tasks as an alternative task to enhance their reading habit and vocabulary. From the data analysis it can be concluded that: 1) In translating the recount text entitled Borobudur, especially in dealing with certain words, the students employ ten translation strategy. These strategies are taken from the Newmarks’ translation strategy (1988: 81-93). The strategies which are applied by the students in this study are the transference strategy, the naturalization strategy, the cultural equivalent strategy, the shift or transposition strategy, the modulation strategy, the recognized translation strategy, the compensation strategy, the expansion strategy, the couplets strategy, and the triplets strategy; 2) The cultural equivalent strategy is the one which is mostly used by the students in translating the text. Based on Newmark (1988: 82-83), this strategy is commonly found in translating popular fiction texts; 3) The students’ perception towards the translating tasks which are given by their teacher is that the translating tasks can help them enhance their reading habit and increase their vocabulary. The reason behind this perception is because they admit that they even do not read English texts unless their teacher has them do so. In this case, it is obviously seen that the students agree that the translating task is an alternative task to make them read English texts. Although in the reality translating task is neglected by many educators, since it is included into one of the characteristics of the Grammar Translation method which is assumed only to focus on knowing grammar rules, remember vocabularies, and produce a good translation of target language.

Abstract:
As part of discourse in the social sciences, economics textbooks written in English in which knowledge has been transferred to other languages through translation have brought a certain impact on both the target language and the target culture. In terms of ideology, this article argues about the hegemonic status of the dominant language or culture that creates socalled epistemicide or the erosion of knowledge, partly due to translation strategies adopted by the translator. Investigation is done using the corpusbased approach, theories of translation strategies and the comparative model. The study reveals that the translator in the macro-level text adopts the ideology of foreignising strategy rather than domesticating strategy when translating an economics textbook from English into Indonesian. This is supported by the use of the number of the source language-orientated translation techniques leading to two translation methods (i.e. literal translation and faithful translation) adopted in the micro-level text. This research strongly supports another relevant study pertaining to the globalisation of knowledge through translation and also the translation theories of equivalence (i.e. overt and covert translation). The research findings also have some pedagogical implications on teaching English for Specific Purposes in higher education.

Abstract This article presents a method for the establishment and description of shifts in integral translations of narrative texts. The method is based on the premise that both micro- and macrostructural shifts in translation can furnish indications of the translational norms adopted by the translator, his interpretation of the original text and the strategy applied during the process of translation. Further it is based on the assumption that research on the nature and frequency of microstructural shifts must precede research on macrostructural ones, in order to guarantee that findings are verifiable and the study repeatable. Thus, the method developed consists of two components: a comparative and a descriptive model. The comparative model is designed for the classification of microstructural shifts, i.e. semantic, stylistic and pragmatic shifts within sentences, clauses and phrases. The descriptive model focuses on the effects of microstructural shifts on the macrostructural level. With the aid of this model shifts with respect to characters, events, time, place and other meaningful components of the text can be determined and described.

Abstract:
This article is a qualitative study examining social dimensions as a factor influencing the translation of taboo words. The social dimension is a component in sociolinguistics that unravels social information of the community within the communication process. Data were retrieved from a novel titled ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ by J.D. Salinger in 1951. The translated version in the Malay language was titled ‘Wira Ladang’, which Zulkifli Ahmad translated in 1999. In this novel, J.D. Salinger narrated the story of a teenage rebellion icon named Holden Caulfield. The social dimension framework by Holmes & Wilson (2017) and translation strategy by Baker (2011) were applied in this study. The study showed that four social dimensions by Holmes & Wilson (2017) – social distance, social status, formality and function – are significant factors in determining strategies used by the translator to address taboo words in translation. The researchers also found that textual formality is a dominant social dimension factor influencing the translation of taboo words. However, other social dimensions did influence the selection of strategies by the translator in translating taboo words. This study can serve as a guide for literary work translators to determine the strategy in translating social dimensions that best suit the norms and culture of Malaysian readers. Translation is closely related to languages, linguistics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, culture etc. and because of these relations, there are also a lot of theories which give importance either to source language or target language. Linguistic and other features of the source and target texts have been examined for years. But translator is an important element with an important role in translation process as well, and the influence of translators’ personality traits on their translation has been emphasized. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to investigate whether there are relations between translators’ personality characters and their translation strategy preferences. The BFI Test (Big Five-Factor Inventory) is administered to 28 English Translation and Interpreting students at Cappadocia University to determine the personality traits of the participants. Then they are asked to choose one of the suggested translations in accordance with the translation model. The data are analyzed through SPSS (v. 22). The findings indicate that there are significant relationships between personality traits of participants and their use of translation strategies. According to results, agreeableness personality trait has a significant relationship with borrowing strategy, openness and neuroticism have significant relationships with modulation strategy, and conscientiousness has a significant relationship with adaptation strategy. Only extraversion does not correlate significantly with any of the strategies.

This research was aimed at describing the accuracy level of Google Translate especially in translating English text into Indonesian based on language error analysis and the use of equivalence strategy. The data were collected by taking one paragraph from Johann Gottfried Herder’s Selected Writings on Aesthetics book as the source text. Then they were translated by Google Translate (GT). The data of GT translation were analyzed by comparing them with the measurement instrument of translation equivalence level and elaborating the equivalence strategy of GT. By doing so the language errors were seen thus the accuracy level of GT translation could be described. The result of this research showed that (1) out of 13 source data only 4 or 31% are accurate translation, 7 or 54% are less accurate translation, and 2 or 15% are inaccurate translation. Therefore it is implied that its reliability for accurate level is only 31%. Half of them is less understandable and a few are not understandable. (2) If the appropriate equivalence translation strategy is sufficiently transposition and literal, GT can produce an accurate translation. (3) If the appropriate equivalence translation strategy is combined strategy between transposition and modulation or descriptive, more difficult strategies, GT just produce less accurate translation because it kept using literal and transposition strategies. (4) But if the appropriate equivalence translation strategy is only modulation, GT just produce inaccurate translation which is not understandable because it can only use transposition strategy. Even if the appropriate equivalence translation strategy is just a transposition strategy, in one case, GT failed to translate and it produced inaccurate translation because its strategy is only literal. In conclusion, especially in this case study, Google Translate can only translate English source text into Indonesian correctly if the appropriate equivalence translation strategy is just literal or transposition.AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan tingkat keakuratan Google Translate khususnya dalam menerjemahkan teks berbahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia berdasarkan analisis kesalahan bahasa dan penggunaan strategi pemadanan. Data dikumpulkan dengan mengambil satu paragraf dari buku Johann Gottfried Herder yang berjudul ‘Selected Writings on Aesthetics’ sebagai teks sumber. Kemudian data tersebut diterjemahkan oleh Google Translate (GT). Data terjemahan GT itu dianalisis dengan cara membandingkannya dengan instrumen pengukur tingkat kesepadanan terjemahan dan menjelaskan strategi pemadanan yang digunakan. Dengan melakukan hal tersebut kesalahan bahasanya dapat terlihat sehingga tingkat keakuratan terjemahan GT dapat dideskripsikan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa (1) Dari 13 data sumber hanya 4 data atau 31% yang merupakan terjemahan akurat, 7 data atau 54% merupakan terjemahan yang kurang akurat, dan 2 data atau 15% merupakan terjemahan tidak akurat. Dengan demikian tingkat kehandalannya sampai pada tingkat akurat hanya sebesar 31% saja. Sementara sekitar setengahnya lagi kurang dapat dipahami. Sedangkan sisanya tidak bisa dipahami. (2) Apabila strategi pemadanan yang seharusnya dipakai cukup transposisi dan terjemahan literal saja ternyata GT mampu menghasilkan terjemahan yang akurat. (3) Apabila strategi yang harus dipakai adalah strategi kombinasi antara transposisi dan modulasi atau deskriptif, strategi yang lebih sulit, GT hanya mampu menghasilkan terjemahan yang kurang akurat karena tetap menggunakan strategi penerjemahan literal dan transposisi saja. (4) Tetapi apabila strategi yang seharusnya dipakai hanya strategi modulasi saja GT hanya menghasilkan terjemahan tidak akurat, yang tidak bisa dipahami karena hanya mampu memakai strategi transposisi saja. Bahkan jika seharusnya strategi yang dipakai adalah sekedar transposisi, pada satu kasus, GT ternyata gagal menerjemahkan dan menghasilkan terjemahan tidak akurat karena strategi yang dipakainya adalah penerjemahan literal. Sebagai simpulan, khususnya dalam studi kasus ini, Google Translate hanya mampu menerjemahkan teks sumber berbahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia secara akurat jika strategi pemadanannya yang sesuai hanya sekedar literal atau transposisi.

This study examined whether training in translation/interpretation leads to a reliance on a ‘vertical’ translation strategy in which the source language text is comprehended before the message is reformulated. Students of translation/interpreting and untrained bilinguals were given an idiom translation judgment task with literal (form and meaning) or figurative equivalents (meaning only). Dependent measures included the time taken to comprehend the first presented sentence and the accuracy and speed of judging if the second presented sentence was a translation of the first sentence. The groups did not differ in their speed of reading the first presented sentence but translation verification times differed by group and translation type: untrained bilinguals were significantly faster at verifying literal than figurative translations while trained bilinguals were equally fast for the two types. The pattern of findings is consistent with the view that training in translation fosters a processing-for-meaning-before reformulating, or vertical, translation strategy.

The study concerned on the translation analysis of Indonesian conceptual metaphors found in the novel Tarian Bumi into English as found in its translation novel entitled Earth Dance. The objectives of this study were to identify and analyze the types of Indonesian conceptual metaphor and the translation strategies applied in translating them. The data were the sentences and quotations which belonged to Indonesian conceptual metaphors found in the Indonesian novel Tarian Bumi and their translation products that were found in the novel Earth Dance. This study applied the theoretical framework proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) in identifying and analyzing the Indonesian conceptual metaphors. Meanwhile, in revealing the translation strategies used by the translator of the novel, the study applied the theoretical framework proposed by Larson (1998). Based on observation, this study revealed that Tarian Bumi consisted of 102 Indonesian conceptual metaphors in which are divided into three types; 46 data (45%) were identified as structural metaphors, 40 data (39%) were ontological metaphors, and 16 (16%) data were orientational metaphor. Based on the investigation of translation strategy, it was found that the translator applied the strategy of translating metaphor into metaphor by 72 data found (70.6%), metaphor into non-figurative language by 26 data found (25.5%), and metaphor into simile by 4 data found (3.9%).

The writer analyses the data by classifying the type of idiomatic expressions based on McCarthy and O’Dell’s theory about the types of idiom, giving explication toward the translation strategy of idiomatic expression that is done by the translator based on Mona Baker’s theory about translation strategy of idiom, and analyzing the translation accuracy of English idiomatic expression translation into Indonesian considering the appropriate of the context of film and related theory about accuracy-rating assessment by Nababan. As the result, the types of idiomatic expression applied in that film are compound, verb +object, prepositional phrase, and whole clause and sentence. The translator seems prefer to use omission of entire idiom, paraphrasing, and using idiom of similar meaning and form strategy in translating idiom expression. ---Abstrak Tulisan ini membahas tentang jenis-jenis ungkapan idiom dan keakurasian terjemahan subtitle idiom dari bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dalam film “Big Hero 6” yang diterjemahkan oleh tim Lebah Ganteng dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif. <span>To show how important the equivalence of ST and TT in business law text is the main goal of this research. Besides that, the benefit of this research is to motivate a translator to become more critical and accurate in producing more quality translations. The results of research can be utilized as a benchmark to conduct further research in a similar study. The library research and field method are commonly administered in translation research. And the technique of analyzing data exerts comparative and causal model between the Source Text (ST) and the Target Text (TT). It is determined that the approach is pursuant to ST and TT both Nord Extra-textual and Intra-textual factors. In addition, the research scope is limited to addition and omission, the strategy of translating in word, phrase or term, clause, and sentence. The conformity of ST and TT to Grice’s maxim is also analyzed as the effect of employing strategy of translating, the addition and omission. These research findings, firstly verifies that extra-textual and intra-textual factors are mostly integrated in achieving equivalence of ST and TT. Secondly, it is also discovered that translation error of deviation, addition, and omission of meaning as the impact of translating strategy application, addition and omission. Thirdly, it is acquired that writing business law text in English is more conventional compared to Indonesian. In conclusion, the translation of business law text complies with faithful and conventional main criteria. Moreover, not only the mastery of other knowledge related but also good collaboration are required between concerned parties and determined the success of translation practice. Therefore, it is wished for these results and implications could be referred to proceed with comprehensive research in other legal texts. Hereafter, it is also advised that proofreading is performed more than twice to minimalize misinterpretation. </span>

Abstract This study addresses the use of hyperbole in the Quran at the word level and its English translation. It investigates the morphological shift of hyperbolic patterns such as ‘Fa’uul (فعول), Fa’eel (فعيل) and Fa’aal’ (فعال) and their corresponding English translations. We attempt to determine the implications underlying the translation strategies for the translation quality of the data under study. Under this circumstance, the translator applied a series of translation strategies, such as literal translation, paraphrase, transposition, and morphological strategies, with transposition being the most employed strategy. Such strategies were in some cases a problem for the functions of the Quranic hyperboles. As such, the translation quality was occasionally poor.
