ZusammenfassungThis article revolves around translation politics as a consequence of colonial politics in New Spain. The colonizers categorized the indigenous population as personas miserables, a juridical term which had emerged in Europe. We examine the influence of this label on translation practices taking place in the context of the Catholic mission as well as in the juridical and notarial sphere. To this end, we analyze Spanish-Zapotec documents dating from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries from Oaxaca, Mexico. The hypothesis is that this ambiguous status, which characterizes the population as immature and in need of protection, shaped translation procedures in translations into Zapotec, but also created scope for the indigenous population to participate in political decision-making processes, as can be demonstrated on the basis of translations from Zapotec into Spanish.

This chapter explores the editions of romans-à-clef written by Henry Miller, Anaïs Nin, and Lawrence Durrell, those that traveled from South America to the Iberian Peninsula in the 1960s, and the Spanish and Catalan translations carried out domestically in Spain. It aims to identify the network of agents that facilitated the translations by examining archival material on the circulation and reception of the works included in my case studies: Miller’s Tropic of Cancer and Black Spring, Nin’s A Spy in the House of Love and Ladders to Fire, and Durrell’s Justine and Balthazar, which arrived in Franco’s Spain (sometimes smuggled editions, often censored versions and even “non-translations”). With this documentary material, I illustrate how the translators, publishers and censors involved in this translation flow between North America, Argentina and Francoist Spain interacted to shape the reception of these novels for the Spanish and Catalan readership.

This paper reports on one of the main problem-triggers in film dialogue synchronization for dubbing: conversational markers (CMs). The synchronized film scripts (TT2s) from the TRACEci corpus of English-Spanish cinema scripts, ready to be delivered by dubbing actors, are compared with their draft translations (TT1s) and with non-translated Spanish data from the guiones subcorpus of CORPES XXI. Results confirm that the number of CMs has been reduced in the TT2s in favor of synchronization and that certain CMs are indicators of English-Spanish statistical dubbese (overuse), causing unwanted redundancy. The analysis benefits from corpus data and is intended to help both students and professionals to improve the acceptability of their translations.

This chapter aims to identify areas in which students of translation can benefit from specific language teaching geared towards their needs as future translators who will normally be expected to translate from as well as into their second language. Drawing on data from translations by several hundred students at a Spanish university, it is shown that general English teaching as it is currently conceived is not sufficient to prepare these students for the job, mainly because they require specific knowledge and contrastive awareness to be able to produce linguistically, stylistically and formally correct translations of the written texts they will be confronted with as professional translators. The data allows us to distinguish several types of frequent mistakes caused by linguistic interference, providing insights into the specific language teaching needs of translation students and setting a starting point for establishing a cross-linguistically valid inventory of the most common types of interference-based errors in translation.

ZusammenfassungEighteenth-century Spanish encyclopaedias, translated from other European languages into Castilian, provide excellent illustrations of the central connections between ency-clopaedism and translation at the time. They show the importance of translations for the dissemination of the genre, the transcultural and transgeneric interweaving of knowledge through multiple translation practices, processes of autonomization in the form of departure from the source text, and forms of „nationalization“ resulting from the adaptation of translated encyclopaedias to the cultural background of their readers. At the same time, the analysis reveals that these texts were by no means only important in terms of the wealth of knowledge they provided, nor were they simply pragmatic instruments of reform-oriented Enlightenment. Rather, they proved to be a medium for self-confident participation in the knowledge production of the time and thus also for inner and outward self-assertion.

Abstract:
While Countess Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921), a successful novelist, an essayist and a champion of women’s rights in Spain, was not a translator of Russian literature (although she was a very talented linguist and translated from many languages into Spanish), she was the first, and without doubt, the greatest popularizer of Russian literature in Spain and later in Spanish America. Through her three public lectures given in Madrid in 1887, which she later published as a book, she gave, first to her audience and then to Spanish readers in general, an excellent overview of Russian culture and literature––and this in a highly original and creative manner. Wherever possible, Pardo Bazán endeavoured to suggest meaningful and relevant links between the Spanish and Russian literatures; she always provided full and clear biographical materials about the Russian writers she was presenting as well as detailed and lively analyses of their works. Sadly, her valuable contribution to this field has been ignored or, at best, it has been defined as of historical interest only. In 2021, the anniversary of her death, not a single commemorative event in Madrid focussed on her outstanding work as cultural intermediary between Spain and Russia. This essay aims to redress this balance somewhat by showing that Pardo Bazán bequeathed to Spanish readers a well-informed and carefully-researched body of critical studies of Russian literature. Additionally, the influence of certain Russian authors on her own fiction, as I suggest, constitutes an important task for future scholars. Almost entirely due to Pardo Bazán’s pioneering work as the major popularizer of Russian literature in Spain, the first wave of direct translations of Russian writers into Spanish began to appear shortly after the publication of her lectures.

Spanish lacks a construction that parallels the German dative passive, which presents the process from the recipient perspective while often leaving the agent implicit. The main aim of this chapter is to elucidate as to what extent the recipient perspective is maintained, and which voice resources ( genus verbi ) and translation techniques are involved in the translation of German passive constructions between German and Spanish. The evidence for the study is taken from the Parallel Corpus of German and Spanish (PaGeS). When translating sentences which include the bekommen/kriegen variants of the dative passive, translators into Spanish do not maintain the recipient perspective, but opt for, mainly, the agent perspective in about 40% of the examples under scrutiny. In these cases, simplification comes into play as a translation technique.

The essay examines the prismatisation of Jane Eyre in Spanish unabridged, condensed, and reduced translations over time, evaluating their literary and cultural refractions. A first section addresses the literary synthesis and representation of reality: through a series of comparative stylistic microanalyses, it evaluates the recreation, loss, or refraction of lexical, syntactic, musical, imagistic, and contextual forms of meaning. The next two sections examine the strong contextual refractions of women’s liberation and the colonial oppression motifs of the novel respectively; focusing on the first widespread reception of Jane Eyre from the 1940s onwards, it contrasts its prismatisation as an explicit cry for freedom in Latin America, where the women’s vote was being fought for and achieved in the newly independent republics, with its prismatisation as anything from apparent orthodoxy (self-censorship) and negative freedom (writing between the lines) in Spain, where Franco’s programme was pursuing the restoration of National-Catholic values.
