Abstract Lanfranc of Milan is considered as one of the most influential surgeons of the late Middle Ages and his Latin works – the Chirurgia parva and the Chirurgia magna – have informed surgical practice until the 16th century. During the Middle Ages many Greek mathematical and astronomical texts were translated from Greek into Arabic (ca. ninth century) and from Arabic into Latin (ca. twelfth century). There were many factors complicating the study of them, such as translation from or into other languages, redactions, multiple translations, and independently transmitted scholia. In the ninth century, the evangelizing mission of SS Cyril and Methodius brought Christian translations to the east of what was then Europe. In this commemorative article, the author presents the Latin translation of one of Solon’s elegies (27W) which was placed in Chronicon regum Poloniae (from Lech until Mieszko I), a 16th-century chronicle by Gliczner, who was a theologian and pedagogue born in Żnin. In addition, mentions of the Polish studies and contemporary translations of that elegy were made, and based on the Latin translation, a Polish translation was produced in prose poetry.

This paper tests the hysteresis hypothesis in unemployment for 13 Latin American countries covering the period 1980-2005. The tests exploit the time series and the cross sectional variation of the series, and allows for cross section dependence and a different number of endogenously determined structural breakpoints. The findings give support to the hysteric dynamic hypothesis for the majority of the countries analyzed. The implications of the results have ramifications regarding macro-stabilization, structural reform, and the design of social safety protection.
