Abstract:
The differences between early Ladino liturgical translations andhalakhictranslations, both of which were based on Hebrew sources, are analyzed in this study. The liturgical translations include the Bible, Pirke Avot, the Passover Haggadah, and the Siddur as well as biblical citations in these sources. The halakhic translations includeMesa de el alma(Shulḥan Hapanimin Hebrew) which is a translation ofShulḥan Arukh, the translations ofḤovat Halevavot, and the halakhic instructions in the prayer books. While there are no significant variations in orthography between the two kinds of translations and morphology demonstrates few differences, syntax, discourse analysis, and lexicon reveal great variability. The halakhic translations demonstrate simplification, explicitation, normalization, and a small amount of interference, whereas the liturgical translations adhere to very strict norms of word-for-word translation. It was also found in both kinds of texts that the western translations from Italy and the Netherlands done by former converted Jews (anusim) follow Spanish norms more than the eastern Ladino conventions of the Jews in the Balkans and Asia Minor.

Abstract:
In this report we present a neural approach to machine translation for the Val Badia variant of Ladin. To achieve good results, neural models require a large number of exemplary translations on which they can be trained. The limited availability of such parallel data for Ladin makes it necessary to synthesise such data by using monolingual texts. We mainly use texts from the Ladin newspaper “La Usc di Ladins” as a basis for this so-called back translation. We translate these texts into Italian, using a rule-based system implemented in Apertium. Using DeepL API, we postprocess these translations and improve them, mainly at grammatical level. The resulting corpus serves as a basis for the different experiments we perform when we train models for this language pair. We train Transformer models from scratch and fine-tune pretrained models. With both methods we have achieved results that outperform the statistical and rule-based approaches to machine translation investigated so far. The models have been made available by means of a web application. Furthermore we have launched a platform for the continuous revision of the corpus to allow for the continuous improvement of the model through human post-editing.

Abstract The present study is a linguistic analysis of the translations of some Biblical and Mishnaic verb forms into Ladino in Pirke Avot 'Ethics of the Fathers'. The liturgical Hebrew text includes both language layers, Biblical and Mishnaic. It is read by Sephardic Jewry from Passover to Pentecost a chapter a week, and has been translated into Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish calque-type language, in a variety of places since 1552. The article focuses on the morphological aspects of the translations. The results show that whereas Ladino translators opted for literal translations of the Biblical verses, they adopted freer renditions of the less sacred Mishnaic text. The differences stem from the difference in attitudes towards the sanctity of the two linguistic layers.

Abstract:
The biblical Song of Songs has undergone numerous translations into Spanish and Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) since the Middle Ages. While some translations exclusively feature the original biblical text, others also incorporate translations of the Aramaic interpretations found in Midrash Shir Hashirim. A comparison of these translations highlights a distinction in orthography between medieval and post-medieval renditions. The former are exclusively rendered in Latin letters, whereas the latter are presented in either Hebrew or Latin script. Medieval, and pre-17th century Ladino translations, encompass solely the biblical renderings, whereas post-medieval translations, dating from the 17th century onwards, encompass the translations of both the biblical text and the Aramaic interpretations. This paper specifically examines and contrasts the first three verses of the initial chapter, analyzing translations from three medieval sources and six post-medieval sources. The observed variations in these translations can be attributed to factors such as orthographic conventions, chronological influences, and the geographical locations of publication. Through these comparative analyses, it becomes evident that Ladino translations of biblical texts tend to adhere more closely to the original Hebrew source and maintain a stricter fidelity to established norms when compared to translations of the Aramaic texts.

The Hebrew root ˀ-m-n is related to a number of different words found in the Hebrew Bible, for instance, hɛˀěmīn ‘believe, trust, confide, be sure’, nɛˀĕman ‘was trustworthy’, ˀemūn ‘trust’, ˀěmūnā ‘faith, belief, trust’, ˀĕmɛṯ ‘truth’, and ˀāmen ‘amen’. The purpose of this paper is to examine, contrast and compare various translations of the derivatives of this root, hɛˀěmīn and nɛˀĕman/ nɛˀĕmān, which appear in both medieval Spanish and in Ladino versions of the Bible from the 16th century onwards, and to explore the extent to which these translations are diverse in their interpretations. This comparison enables us to establish the claim that Ladino versions of the Bible developed independently and are not based on earlier medieval Spanish translations.

Pirke Avot known as the “Ethics of the Fathers”, a Mishnaic compendium of rabbinic sayings, is comprised of six chapters, which Sephardic Jews read one chapter a week with the Ladino translation on the Sabbaths between Pesaḥ (Passover) and Shavu'ot (Pentecost). The end of chapter five and chapter six were appended to this Mishna after 200 CE. The final paragraphs of chapter five list either three or four sages by their names, while one is referred to by hu haya omer (‘he used to say’), translated as él era dizién. Because the order of the paragraphs varies in different Ladino editions, the identity of the Rabbi is unclear. The translation of Vienna 1857 adds to the confusion because the Hebrew text represents one order and the translation another. The article presents the paragraphs and the orders in which they occur in the various Ladino editions and concludes with the possible identity of the unnamed rabbi.

Abstract Despite Church prohibitions, almost twenty medieval Bibles in Spanish survive. The Old Testament versions derived in many cases from translations from Hebrew made by Jews. These were characterized by a unique rabbinical “calque-language” that would be preserved by Sephardim for centuries after the Expulsion in 1492; but the Inquisition destroyed the medieval Jewish copies. This article studies a new witness, the oldest known: a thirteenth-century Hebrew commentary on the Hagiographa with Spanish glosses. These fully confirm the amazing continuity of the Ladino scriptolect.

This article deals with one of the Ladino versions of the Toledot Yeshu preserved in the Ets Haim library in Amsterdam. It is an exceptional manuscript in cursive Mughrabi script, copied around the middle of the seventeenth century but showing significant traces of having originally been composed around the middle of the sixteenth century. The importance of this document goes far beyond its role as the probable Vorlage used by Johannes Jacob Ulrich for his Hebrew-Latin edition Historia Jeschuae Nazareni (1705). Providing an apparently vivid reflection of the cultural context in the Iberian societies to which the Judaisers and converts belonged, the text of the Istoriah de Iesus natsareno (איסטרייה די ישו״ז נאצארינו) is an excellent example of an original process of rewriting. At the same time, the work carried out in composing this version and its successive reception in Hebrew, Latin and Judeo-German translations can help to clarify the complex relationships between redaction, translation and rewriting in the narrative traditions of Jewish versions of the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

In this report, two different machine translation approaches for the low-­resource Ladin of the Val Badia are presented and evaluated: a dictionary-based approach using Apertium and a phrase-based statistical approach using Moses. The experiments show that the statistical approach outperforms in-domain the dictionary-based one and can provide satisfactory translations. Out-of-­domain, on the other hand, both approaches deliver poor translations. Here, the dictionary-based approach offers the greater room for improvement with the available resources.

This study will entertain considerations of authenticity and identity in translating Spanish American Neoindigenist fiction. Ladino writing and its translatability, its translinguistic and transcultural nature, are explored, particularly insofar as its context intersects with the oral and written traditions and their convergences and divergences. Notions about authenticity that adhere to these forms and expressions are considered. The translational origins of supposedly “pure” works of indigenousness, including the Popol Vuh, are traced in order to show an anti-essentialist hybridity that embraces an aesthetic realism rather than a mimetic one. The impure, then, describes the multivocal, multigeneric, and even multilingual texts from which translators work in this genre, creating in their turn “twice translated” texts. The tensions of these texts must be accounted for in translation. The glossary and other paratexts in Neoindigenismo and its precursor, Indigenismo, are surveyed as strategic repositories, sometimes of ideological slippages and always of contentions between worldviews. The goal of representing the cultural frame, the ecology of the source text, is championed, as are other considerations in the historicized and ethical presentation of difference.

This article contrasts two English translations of Heinrich Heine's Shakspeares Mädchen und Frauen (1838), produced by Charles Godfrey Leland (1891) and Ida Benecke (1895), which are now regularly (though randomly) quoted in Shakespeare scholarship. The comparison sheds light on different strategies involved in translating a text as an independent document or as part of a ‘Collected Works’ series. The discrepancies between publication contexts are correlated with differences between domesticating and foreignizing approaches, and with the diverging appreciations of Heine's place within Shakespeare criticism that such choices entail. The translators' gender politics are also shown to affect their renderings of Heine's text on female characters in Shakespeare, which was itself indebted to a book by Anna Jameson (1832). Finally, cultural transfer theory and histoire croisée are used to explore a ‘re-transfer’ that involved British Shakespeare critics, an atypical Jewish-German writer who drew on their work, and Heine's ‘English’ translators. The article highlights the necessary imbrication of translation studies and book history in the analysis of complex transcultural forms of textual production, of which Shakespeare criticism is paradigmatic.

Sephardi printers were pioneers of moveable type in the Islamic world, establishing a Hebrew printing house in Istanbul in 1493. Initially emphasizing classical religious works in Hebrew, since the eighteenth century printers have been instrumental in the development of scholarship, literature, and journalism in the vernacular of most Jews of the western Ottoman Empire: Ladino. Although most Jewish males knew the Hebrew alphabet, they did not understand Hebrew texts. Communal cultural leaders and printers collaborated in order to bring basic Jewish works to the masses in the only language they really knew. While some books in Ladino were printed as early as the sixteenth century, their percentage increased since the second quarter of the eighteenth century, following the printing of Me-’am lo’ez, by Jacob Culi (1730), and the Bible in Ladino translation by Abraham Assa (1739). In the nineteenth century the balance of Ladino printing shifted toward novels, poetry, history, and biography, sciences, and communal and state laws and regulations. Ladino periodicals, which aimed to modernize, educate, and entertain, were of special social and cultural importance, and their printing houses also served as publishers of Ladino books. Thus, from its beginnings as an agent that aimed to “Judaize” the Jews, Ladino publishing in the later period sought to modernize and entertain, while still trying to spread Judaic knowledge.

Feminist Translation is an important research topic of our times. Meanwhile, this trend is gaining increasing attention in China. However, the research on male images in female literature remains insufficient, since those male characters pale easily in comparison with those gorgeous ladies in feminist translation studies. Therefore, the authors choose as the research subject male images in translations of Pride and Prejudice as it seeks to analyze the influence of feminism on male and female translators. To achieve this, the authors carry out a contrast analysis of the language of two Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice, done respectively by Mr. Wang Keyi and Ms. Lei Limei. The main logic behind our research method is that nuances in translation can give insight into translators' opinions. As a result, readers can detect the influence of feminism on translators, by comparing the expressions used to interpret male figures of a shared original text. In the third part, the authors conclude that gender plays a certain role in translations: male images created by women tend to be more in line with that of the original text, while gentlemen interpreted by men correspond mostly with that of social cognition. Given this, the authors analyze, at the end of this paper, translators’ personal experiences and historical background as a way to seek reasons for these differences.

Abstract:
This article is a qualitative study examining social dimensions as a factor influencing the translation of taboo words. The social dimension is a component in sociolinguistics that unravels social information of the community within the communication process. Data were retrieved from a novel titled ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ by J.D. Salinger in 1951. The translated version in the Malay language was titled ‘Wira Ladang’, which Zulkifli Ahmad translated in 1999. In this novel, J.D. Salinger narrated the story of a teenage rebellion icon named Holden Caulfield. The social dimension framework by Holmes & Wilson (2017) and translation strategy by Baker (2011) were applied in this study. The study showed that four social dimensions by Holmes & Wilson (2017) – social distance, social status, formality and function – are significant factors in determining strategies used by the translator to address taboo words in translation. The researchers also found that textual formality is a dominant social dimension factor influencing the translation of taboo words. However, other social dimensions did influence the selection of strategies by the translator in translating taboo words. This study can serve as a guide for literary work translators to determine the strategy in translating social dimensions that best suit the norms and culture of Malaysian readers. My research interests include culturemes, including those related to the Second World War, analysed in terms of translation within the Polish/French language pair. In my earlier work I examined culturemes related to the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. In this article, I propose to compare a few of the culturemes that emerged in the German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, which I have chosen from the Polish short story Proszę państwa do gazu (This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen) by Tadeusz Borowski and its French versions, in two French translations entitled: Au gaz, messieurs-dames! translated by Geneviève Daude (Editions Polonia, 1960) and Aux douches, Mesdames et Messieurs! translated by Laurence Dyèvre and Éric Veaux (Christian Bourgois Editeur, 1992). In addition to comparing strategies for translating the selected culturemes into French, I reached for authentic documents to see if Polish culturemes specific to Auschwitz had French equivalents outside of literature. Culturemes, according to the definition in the Dystynktywny słownik synonimów by Alicja Nagórko, Marek Łaziński and Hanna Burkhardt (2004), are “important keywords for the self-identification of a community, characterising both its attitude to tradition, inherited values, as well as its coping with present time, its current experience of the world”. I include culturemes, created in the Polish language in the reality of the German occupation, among such lexical units of cultural and emotional character, as words of collective memory.

Et dukkehjem (A Dolls’ House) by Henrik Ibsen is one of the most central texts of world theatre and literature, but at the same time, it is also a text written by an author coming from a relatively peripheral source language and culture. Nevertheless, soon after her entrance to the European stages Ibsen’s Nora found her way to the Slovenian theatres, albeit via German translations more often than not. This paper will show how the fact that the translations were done between two peripheral languages has affected all existing Slovenian translations, direct or indirect.

La Provincia autonoma di Bolzano ha un’esperienza ultradecennale nella redazione inclusiva di testi normativi e amministrativi nelle tre lingue ufficiali italiano, tedesco e ladino. Il contributo ripercorre la nascita nel 2010 di una legge volta alla parificazione di uomo e donna anche a livello linguistico e la creazione di direttive per il linguaggio di genere nei testi dell’Amministrazione provinciale. Affronta inoltre le questioni aperte a livello redazionale, traduttivo e terminologico. L’equivalenza delle diverse versioni linguistiche di una norma può essere messa in dubbio dall’impiego di diverse strategie di visibilizzazione o neutralizzazione del genere. A livello terminologico è necessario un supporto per chi scrive e traduce testi, ma diversi fattori pongono sfide teoriche e pratiche di non facile risoluzione, tra cui l’astrattezza dei termini giuridici, la mancanza di attestazione e di consuetudine nell’uso di alcuni agentivi femminili e i dubbi sulla loro corretta gestione metodologica in una risorsa terminologica. Inclusive institutional communication in South Tyrol: experiences and open questions The Autonomous Province of Bozen/Bolzano has over a decade of experience in drafting inclusive legislation and administrative texts in its three official languages Italian, German and Ladin. The paper reports on a law from 2010 aiming at achieving equality among men and women also at the linguistic level and on the ensuing guidelines for inclusive language. The paper also deals with open questions concerning text drafting, translation and terminology. The equivalence of the different language versions of a law can be questioned if different strategies for inclusive writing (viz. binary vs non-binary terms) are used. At the level of terminology, writers and translators need support, but several factors pose theoretical and practical challenges that are not easy to overcome. These include the abstract nature of legal terms, the lack of examples of use and the scarce diffusion of certain female agentives as well as doubts about their correct processing from within a terminological resource.

The article attempts to describe the methods of translation from Polish into Russian of such a communicatively significant form of etiquette as conversion. These word constructions containing the name and often the titles of nobility of the one addressed to were used in the Polish speech of the XVII century, as the Polish writer H. Sienkiewicz pointed out in his historical novel “Pan Volodyevsky”. Various forms of appeals, which were used by Polish nobles (gentry), directly indicate their communicative importance in this social environment. Here the lights and the gender issue, since communication occurs among men, ladies and also in mixed gender groups. Thus, this gender issue had to be solved by the translator when translating the novel by H. Sienkiewicz into Russian. In the article by comparison of fragments of the Polish (author’s) and Russian texts with participation of such units it is shown how constructions and terms of this communicative group were translated into Russian.

In 1947, in the German city of Nuremberg, Bohdan Kravtsiv`s book of translations from Rainer Maria Rilke`s “Things and Images” was published, which became a significant contribution to Ukrainian Rilkeanism. B. Kravtsiv`s translations were highly appreciated by critics and literary experts. The purpose of the article is the study of Rilke images and narratives in Bohdan Kravtsiv’s translations, the analysis of the main concepts related to the ideological and thematic layers of the lyrics that B. Kravtsiv chose for translation, and the highlighting of the existential discourse as a translation phenomenon that enabled him to introduce Rainer Maria Rilke’s poems in the Ukrainian artistic context. To achieve this goal, a number of methods were used: biographical (aimed at tracing Rilke`s spiritual and cultural ties with Ukraine during his journey through its territory), cultural-historical, philological, and intertextual. The phenomenological and hermeneutic analysis enables the study of existential discourse in Rilke`s lyrics and immanent interpretation in Kravtsiv`s translations of Rilke`s idiostyle and artistic-philosophical concepts. The elements of conceptual analysis make it possible to consider Rilke`s poetry in translations by Bohdan Kravtsiv, highlighting the main concepts that determine its cultural-artistic and existential-philosophical content. B. Kravtsiv paid particular attention to Rilke`s poems related to biblical and evangelical subjects: “Departure of the Prodigal Son”, “David Sings to Saul”, “Pieta”, “Resurrected”, “The Supper”. B. Kravtsiv translated a number of poems from ancient themes (“Sibyl”, “Orpheus. Eurydice. Hermes”, “Leda”, “Esther”, “Cretan Artemis”, “Alcestis”, “Islands of the Sirens”) since ancient mythology had an important place in Rilke`s artistic outlook. It’s a part of his artistic and metaphysical world, the heart of his existence. The metaphysical concept of the finitude of life evolved through all the lyrical-philosophical cycles of the Austrian poet, in which the lexical-semantic field of the concept of “death” is creatively implemented through ideas and motifs. Bohdan Kravtsiv translated several of Rilke`s poems “Experience with Death”, “Death of a Beloved”, and “The End”, in which the philosophical idea that the Italian existentialist philosopher Nicola Abbagiano defined as coexistence can be clearly traced. During the analysis of the artistic concept sphere and leitmotifs in Bohdan Kravtsiv`s translations, it is worth highlighting the nostalgia of the poetry “This is where the extreme huts are already”, the suggestiveness of “The Archaic Torso of Apollo”, the phantasmagoric nature of “The Sorcerer”, the existential elegiacism of “Evening”, the mysticism of “Alien”, the belief in the immortality of “Autumn”, the artistic plasticity of “Panthers”, the carnival enchantment of “Carousel”, the exquisite, subtle eroticism of “Ladies”, the magical fatalism of “Courtesy”, the metaphysics of life and death in “Experience with Death”, autobiography and delving into the subconscious in the poems “At the piano”, “From childhood”, the secret of art in “The Poet”, the young chivalrous romance of “The Boy”, the wild grace of “Cretan Artemis”. Conclusion. In the selected translations, Bohdan Kravtsiv managed to artistically recreate Rilke images, especially from ancient (Alquesta, Orpheus) and biblical (Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene) themes, which appeared in the Austrian poet`s lyrics as archetypal images-symbols and images-ideas, defining the spiritual, philosophical and axiological basis of his creativity. Among the multifaceted conceptual sphere, Rilke chose Kravtsiv for the translation of poetry in which he substantiates the concept of “death” from an existential-philosophical point of view as a phenomenon of coexistence that changes one dimension of existence to another, which can also be traced in the narrative of the Austrian poet: death as “invisible and unenlightened we are the side of life”, – immanent in life itself. In the poems selected for translation, Kravtsiv managed to trace the path of the Austrian artist through catharsis to spiritual insight, self-awareness, and the search for authentic values of being. To introduce Rilke`s existential discourse into the Ukrainian artistic context, to give a number of translated poems a special national sound and philosophical content allowed the writer to work with the Ukrainian word, search and restore authentic books, archaic and dialect lexemes, occasionalism, which received a new sound in the translator`s artistic style, supplementing Rilke texts poetics. The translation activity of B. Kravtsiv became a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian literature and culture in general, enriching it with ideas, concepts, artistic motifs, and the artistic word of one of the most brilliant modern poets – Rainer Maria Rilke. The analysis of Ukrainian writer’s poetic translations in the book “Things and Images” has the perspective of both literary and linguistic research and involves the creation of a thorough scientific work. While working on translations of Rilke`s poems, B. Kravtsiv, in his characteristic artistic and poetic style, uses a significant amount of book, archaic and dialect vocabulary, and occasionalism, which appear to him not only as artistic and aesthetic means of poetic expression, but are also filled with deep-rooted national meaning, contain the genetic code of an authentic Ukrainian word. Bohdan Kravtsiv managed to do Rilke translations so Ukrainian, because he felt the spiritual kinship of the Austrian poet with Ukraine and its people, that as an artist, philosophermetaphysician, and pantheist, having visited Ukrainian lands, he felt, understood, and realized the true spiritual and genetic roots of the European community.

As Becky Sharpe flounces off from Miss Pinkerton's academy, she takes leave of her patron by telling her “in a very unconcerned manner … and with a perfect accent, ‘Mademoiselle, je viens vous faire mes adieux.’” Miss Pinkerton, we learn, “did not understand French, she only directed those who did: but biting her lips and throwing up her venerable and Roman-nosed head … said, ‘Miss Sharp, I wish you a good morning’” (7). This performance of befuddlement on the part of a respectable schoolmistress bespeaks a whole collection of Victorian cultural norms about language competence in general and about the French language in particular. Even though the action is set in a period when Becky's speaking “French with purity and a Parisian accent … [was] rather a rare accomplishment” (11), the novel was written for a mid-nineteenth-century audience that could mainly count on middle-class young ladies to have acquired this degree of refinement—or at least to aspire to do so.

This article shows how deixis and motion events prove to be ideal topics in the stimulation of reflection and enhancement of cross-linguistic awareness among South-Tyrolean speakers of Ladin, who learn English as a fourth language after Italian and German. The initial part of the article illustrates how a translation task that was focused on locative adverbials led students at upper-secondary school to recognise the extreme complexity of their own Ladin L1 adverbial system as compared to the more straightforward binary deictic system of English. The subsequent section shows how secondary-school and university students realised their difficulties in lexicalising motion events in English, arguably due to the different typological tendencies of other languages they learn or have learnt. The video clips that the study participants were asked to describe were subsequently integrated into multilingual and multimodal awareness-raising classes at primary school and in teacher education, where awareness-raising activities are fundamental.

bistro is the Information System for Legal Terminology in Italian, German and Ladin created by the Institute for Applied Linguistics of Eurac Research. It aims at disseminating legal terminology in South Tyrol and supporting international communication. It targets a diversified audience, from law professionals to translators and from students to any citizen who needs support in understanding and translating legal texts and documents. What distinguishes bistro from other terminological resources is that it systematically takes into consideration the different varieties of German and Ladin. Each German term published in bistro includes an indication of which legal system(s) use(s) the term (i.a. Austria, Germany, Switzerland, South Tyrol). The same applies to Ladin terms that are marked according to which language variety they belong to. In this article, we will describe bistro focusing on its content, functions, approach and objectives. We will look in depth at the preliminary methodological reflections for developing a termino­logical resource of this kind. We will pay particular attention to the search and filter functions by language, legal system and legal domain. A particular focus will be laid on the criteria for formulating definitions, an important data category. Finally, we will give insights into future developments and perspectives.

Abstract Romance texts dating from the beginning of the 17th century are relatively rare in South Tyrol, but also in the Ladin valleys of Badia and Gardena, because the administration of these two valleys preferred to use German. The few examples of the use of Romance in the Ladin valleys therefore deserve special attention: on the one hand, because they allow conclusions to be drawn on the degree of multilingualism at the time; on the other hand, because their linguistic form is sometimes characterised by code-mixing, which manifests itself in particular in the fact that the formulaic parts of the texts are generally in (Northern) Italian, while the specifically content-related parts are often interspersed with Ladinisms. Such a text, more precisely the translation of the statutes of the jurisdiction of Enneberg (Marebbe) made in 1614 by the then chancellor Caspar d’Alfarëi from the original version codified in German in 1566, is edited here for the first time and analysed and commented on from a historical and linguistic point of view.

The present study intends to examine the different demonstrations of the relationship between Ladinia and Oswald von Wolkenstein, a South Tyrolean author born at the turn of 1376 who died in 1445. Despite of a life characterized by long periods spent far away, Oswald remained very attached to his homeland, as can be seen both in his literary work and in the extensive documentation that has been preserved. His affinity for the Ladin territories is reflected in special ways with regard to two main aspects: on the one hand, traces of the Ladin language of Val Gardena can be found in Oswald’s literary production, and on the other hand it shows by the way Oswald was received in the Ladin area from the 19th century onwards. With regard to the first aspect, Oswald includes semi-verses and/or specific terms in a language he called Welsch in two plurilingual Lieder, meant as a sophisticated divertissement and evidence of his mastery. A study published by Heinrich Kuen in this journal in 1979 which still is of major relevance today, identified this idiom with the Gardena variant of Ladin. Oswald probably acquired it during his childhood and recognized it as his second mother tongue together with German in the first of the two above-mentioned plurilingual Lieder. From a philological and linguistic point of view the Ladin element in Oswald’s literary work is without equal and of utmost importance because it anticipates by almost a century the first text partially written in a neo-Latin language in the South Tyrolean area. It also anticipates by three centuries both the creation of a Ladin identity and the very first Ladin literary texts that were also written in the Gardena variant. As far as literary reception of Oswald in Ladinia is concerned, notwithstanding numerous revivals of the legend of Oswald as a politician and as a literary author, there has been relatively little interest in the academic community. By comparing the studies of Hans-Dieter Mück and Roland Verra, the second part of this paper first reconstructs a plausible origin of Oswald’s legend from the Dolomites “Man di Ferro” (literally “Iron Hand”), and then examines the literary, translational, musical and artistic tributes paid to Oswald, including personalities that have been central to Ladin culture such as Frida and Luis Piazza. In conclusion, a strong and lasting connection between Oswald von Wolkenstein and Ladinia is revealed, reinforced on an institutional level. In the future one could focus on consolidating ties with the German-speaking and Italian-speaking communities in South Tyrol as well as with the rest of Italy and Europe that all proved vital to the background of Oswald’s life and work.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the knowledge of postnatal care among confinement ladies in Malaysia and assess the effectiveness of an intervention workshop.Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 65 confinement ladies residing in East Coast Malaysia. Among them, 36 ladies were purposely selected to participate in a workshop, while 29 ladies were selected using a snowball sampling method to be in the control group. A validated Malay translation of Knowledge on Postnatal Care for Mothers and Care of the Newborn Questionnaire was used. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 25). Multiple logistic regression was employed to determine factors associated with baseline knowledge. Repeated measure ANCOVA was used to measure the effectiveness of the intervention workshop.Results: Overall, the mean (SD) age of the respondents was 46.23 (8.49) with mean (SD) number of children of 4.0 (2.0) and working experience as confinement ladies of 36.0 months (20.24). Majority (77.1%) were married, from B40 group (91.4%) and received at least secondary education (77.1%). Confinement ladies who received secondary and tertiary education were found to have higher knowledge scores compared to those with primary education (p=0.026 and p=0.049 respectively). There was a significant increase in knowledge of postnatal care scores in those attending the postnatal care workshop (p <0.001)Conclusion: Education level plays an important role in determining the level of knowledge of a confinement lady. The workshop conducted was effective in improving the postnatal care knowledge among confinement ladies. On the one hand, this new edition, or rather translation, of Christine de Pizan’s The Book of the City of Ladies (1405) certainly deserves to be reviewed in Mediaevistik because Christine still falls squarely into the late Middle Ages. On the other, the publication date of this translation, 1521, places it certainly outside of that period. However, a translation is always an important mirror of the reception history, which proves to be particularly rich in Christine’s case. Brian Anslay’s English translation was the first and only one to appear in print (by Henry Pepwell), at least before the twentieth century. However, we know of twenty-seven surviving manuscripts, whereas there are only five copies of Anslay’s printed work available. It is worth noting that the issues addressed here by Christine, helping women to find their own realm and identity, was apparently of significance also for her male audience since Anslay was sponsored by Richard Grey, third earl of Kent.

Francesco Algarotti's Newtonianism for Ladies (1737), a series of lively dialogues on optics, was a landmark in the popularization of Newtonian philosophy. In this essay I shall explore Algarotti's sociocultural world, his aims and ambitions, and the meaning he attached to his own work. In particular I shall focus on Algarotti's self-promotional strategies, his deployment of gendered images and his use of popular philosophy within the broader cultural and experimental campaign for the success of Newtonianism. Finally, I shall suggest a radical reading of the dialogues, reconstructing the process that brought them to their religious condemnation. What did Newtonianism mean to Algarotti? In opposition to mainstream apologetic interpretations, he seems to have framed the new experimental methodology in a sensationalistic epistemology derived mainly from Locke, pointing at a series of subversive religious and political implications. Due to the intervention of religious authorities Algarotti's radical Newtonianism became gradually less visible in subsequent editions and translations. It is only through the study of the first – clandestine – edition of the dialogues that one can begin reconstructing the meaning of Algarotti's experiments (real and fictional) and his cultural battle for a regenerated Europe.

Abstract: The performance of Rudens in 1884 by the Ladies’ Literary Society of Washington University allows consideration of discourses surrounding the problems of slavery and emancipation in 1884 St. Louis. Comparing Plautus’ text (and representation of Roman slavery), the English translation prepared to accompany the performance, and published reviews of the performance reveals crucial redactions and alterations. Even as reviews reveal enthusiasm for the theatrical production, judged authentic for costuming and Latin pronunciation, the changes are shown to reproduce traditional American discourses about slavery and freedom, contemporary narratives about free Blacks, and local, campus discourses about the end of Reconstruction.

Abstract:
South Tyrol (Italy), with its three officially recognized language groups (Germans, Italians and Ladins), is a successful model of how a minority problem can be solved. It is based upon the principle of dissociative conflict resolution, which means separating the language groups as much as possible between themselves, as well as the principle of consociational democracy, which focuses primarily on the cooperation between the language groups’ elites. In the last few years it has been observed that while the institutional frame has not changed, society has, thereby starting to undermine the existing political and institutional system from below. This concerns mainly the ethnic division, which is being questioned more and more by civil society, as well as aspects of cooperation between the elites. As a consequence of this process, South Tyrol's autonomy is moving toward further integration, with the latter again translating into strengthening the two factors of territoriality and identity.

This contribution discusses a dictionary analysis of Germanisms in Lo slang di Bolzano by Paolo Cagnan 2011, the first study of German lexemes in the informal registers of this variety. The aim is to determine the degree of integration into the Italian language and to compare the Germanisms with those in other specialised dictionaries. A comparison with the semantic correspondences of previous research contributions is also made. It shows that results show that the vast majority of the lexemes studied have a low degree of integration into Italian and can hardly be found in other dictionaries of neighbouring dialects or languages. This suggests that they occur exclusively in the lower registers of Bolzano Italian and indicates that the Germanisms in Lo slang di Bolzano may be highly volatile. Most of them are nouns and interjections, and only a few of them are verbs. Interestingly these verbs are mostly loan translations of particle verbs with aus- as the first element, such as ridere fuori or fare fuori; a tendency that is also evident in the Ladin rì ora and se fé ora. Compared to previous studies, mostly based on newspaper corpora, there are also considerable semantic differences because most borrowings in slang refer to the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, such as bere ad ex or monoschluck. Cagnan’s dictionary thus represents an enormous enrichment for research into the vo­cabulary of Bolzano and Italian in South Tyrol in general.

In six dialogues on light and colours”. Buscamos compreender os aspectos que a caracterizam como uma publicação para damas e identificar possíveis questões de gênero. Identificamos na obra uma tendência machista na ciência e elementos que evidenciam um imaginário de que a mulher não teria as qualidades necessárias para compreender a ciência, elementos esses coerentes com a transição de um período em que as mulheres eram consideradas inferiores em todos os aspectos para um outro no qual a construção do papel materno aparece como fundante de uma concepção de mulher não mais inferior, mas fundamentalmente diferente do homem e com papeis complementares a ele. We identified in the work a macho tendency in science and elements that evidence an imaginary that women would not have the qualities necessary to understand science, elements that are consistent with the transition from a period in which women were considered inferior in all respects to a another in which the construction of the maternal role appears as the founder of a conception of woman no longer inferior but fundamentally different from man and with roles complementary to him. AbstractObjective:To investigate changes in socio-economic inequalities in growth in height, weight, BMI and grip strength in children born during 1955–1993 in Guatemala, a period of marked socio-economic-political change.Design:We modelled longitudinal data on height, weight, BMI and hand grip strength using Super-Imposition by Translation and Rotation (SITAR). Internal Z-scores summarising growth size, timing and intensity (peak growth velocity, e.g. cm/year) were created to investigate inequalities by socio-economic position (SEP; measured by school attended). Interactions of SEP with date of birth were investigated to capture secular changes in inequalities.Setting:Urban and peri-urban schools in the region of Guatemala City, Guatemala.Participants:Participants were 40 484 children and adolescents aged 3–19 years of Ladino and Maya ancestry (nobservations 157 067).Results:The difference in height (SITAR size) between lowest and highest SEP decreased from −2·0 (95 % CI −2·2, −1·9) sd to −1·4 (95 % CI −1·5, −1·3) sd in males, and from −2·0 (95 % CI −2·1, −1·9) sd to −1·2 (95 % CI −1·3, −1·2) sd in females over the study period. Inequalities also reduced for weight, BMI and grip strength, due to greater secular increases in lowest-SEP groups. The puberty period was earlier and shorter in higher-SEP individuals (earlier SITAR timing and higher SITAR intensity). All SEP groups showed increases in BMI intensity over time.Conclusions:Inequality narrowed between the 1960s and 1990s. The lowest-SEP groups were still >1 sd shorter than the highest. Risks remain for reduced human capital and poorer population health for urban Guatemalans.
