Full textThe production and the comprehension of utterances depend on the richness of the mental representations available to the speaker/listener. Three inter-individual variables can influence this richness: the expressive style, the age, and the quality of the perceptive/motor system. In this thesis, the emphatic stress is studied as a crucial component of the relation between the speaker and the listener. Five populations were compared: 8-year-old and 10-year-old children, young and old adults, and people suffering from Parkinson's disease. For each population, we analyzed how the emphatic stress was produced and perceived. A multifactorial approach was adopted by taking into account four levels of analysis: prosody, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Four experiments and four cases studies are reported. The results suggest that the temporality plays an important role in structuring and using prosodic patterns

Full textThis research is focused on three generations of twelve Gabonese families. It is based on comprehensive interviews and the analysis privileges the discursive aspect of representations. Our datas are based on a thematic analysis and on triangulation. The former allows an individual and transversal approach of the data. The latter exploit the multiplicity of different points of view on tackled issues. If the results confirm the idea of an erosion of the linguistic practices in ethnic language from a generation to the other one (from G1 to G2, then from G2 to G3), the fact remains that these languages have a strong influence on identity positions, when they are linked with the ethnic group. The results allow to conclude that there is a high desire for the informators to be recognized by their ethnic group, recognition from others which is not assured only by the biological filiation. However, the formal learning of the ethnic languages does not make the unanimity as far as the family circle still represents the right frame for ethnic linguistic transmission. The family linguistic practices and the pendulum movement between the cities and the villages appear for now as appropriate and sufficient factors to insure the transmission and the protection of the ethnic languages

Full textThis thesis was born from our desire to understand and study the management of languages within Djiboutian families. To do this, we decided to focus on the use of the so-called mother tongues and the French language within Djiboutian families in the city of Djibouti, the country's capital. It was seen during this research the place of the languages within the hearths, the role of the parents in such or such language and the recourse and choice of languages in an interaction between the various members of the families.We were able to see the responsibility and the function of each member of the respective families in the introduction of a language. Thus, the reasons for the language choices, the strategies were analyzed and studied.We used quantitative surveys through questionnaires distributed on paper and through technological means. The answers were collected, commented and analyzed.We used the MAC (Combined Analysis Method) methodological framework developed by B. Maurer and we also added to this method other data collection techniques such as interviews, direct observation and other methods that were deemed useful for understanding family language policies in Djibouti City.These results have been processed and have shed light on a number of answers to the hypotheses we formulated at the beginning of the thesis. Family language policies (FLP) are a matter for families, but contexts and the environment play an important role.At the end of this research, we focused on the impact of preschooling on the choice and transmission of the French language in Djiboutian families. This is an area that allows us to understand and detect parental strategies in terms of language choices within families. The family sphere holds the major role in the transmission of languages.All of our research has shown that parents are the pillars of language transmission but also the actors who decide which language or languages to transmit. However, children also have a determining role in the safeguarding of family languages and of French. The French language plays a major role in the many families encountered in this research and it is all a question of linguistic representations

Full textAfter several decades of language loss, some first nations are now reclaiming their ancestral language. This is the case of the community of Wendake which has started in 2007 the Huron-Wendat language revival project named Yawenda. This qualitative case study focuses on linguistic ideologies that come into play when a handful of community members decide to give a second breath of life to their ancestral language. Using interviews and observations, we have gathered data on the challenges and ideologies linked to the Wendat language transmission at the Ts8taïe Elementary School. This study aims to achieve an ideological clarification in order to support the Wendat language revival efforts.

Full textStarting from the parents’ point of view, this thesis in educational sciences studies the family transmission of Breton, in a context of linguistic revitalization that follows the almost total rupture of the intergenerational transmission in the 1950s. A field survey of Breton-speaking parents aged between 23 and 48 in 2018 forms the basis of this research and has made it possible to collect a large amount of quantitative and qualitative data from 50 semi-structured interviews and two questionnaires (450 respondents for one and 306 for the other). It highlights the diversity of family strategies for transmitting the Breton language, in terms of parent-child communication and the environment, ranging from strong, very proactive transmission practices to weak or non-existent transmission practices. It also highlights their dynamic nature, often in the sense of a weakening of transmission as the child grows up. The analysis of parents’ linguistic choices reveals the influence of many factors relating to the environment (family, school, work), the context of the interaction (spouse, child, presence of a third party) and the parent speaker himself or herself (language socialisation, gender, feeling of competence), which combine to form a unique configuration that may or may not allow for language transmission. The transmitting parents report on the educational, personal, family, cultural and political issues involved. The thesis concludes with a series of recommendations for a potential future language policy in favour of the family transmission of Breton

Full textLanguage and culture are inhabited by the concept of intergenerational and transgenerational transmission. Therefore, the cultural and linguistic transmissions are inherent in all people and all societies. However, the terms of these differ according to the generations and territories.Martinique is a French department overseas who would not rid the throes of colonization. A former French colony, its slave past challenges the current education system in Martinique. The abrupt transition from a traditional to a modern society is actually an acculturation Creole language and culture and assimilation to the language and French culture. This has caused a culture of resistance that is similar to the hills in the time of plantation society. Traditional cultural practices reflect certain forms of resistance: the bèlè is both a dance and music dating back to the colonial period; while the round skiff is a practice dating from the post-colonial society. Become iconic in Martinique, these practices were media claims of Martinican culture. They are subject to a reappropriation today; which causes a change in their modes of transmission and officials in charge thereof.Two methods exist to Martinique: an informal transmission that falls within traditional education and formal transmission whose codification is that of modern society. This raises the problem of transmission. Some analytical logic clearly demonstrates that the bèlè and the round yawl is acquired by imitation in rural areas and are learned within the national education and associations. It is the same for the Creole language: it remains a mother tongue for some, by way of acquisition or evolve as a second language for others through learning. Furthermore, transforming a language spoken in a language of writing leads to a loss in the transmission process. It is the same for traditional practices. However, any loss involves appropriation of language and culture. Thus, both in the language of traditional practices, new language and linguistic forms are trying to generalize through the formal evaluation. These new modes of expression seem to modernize not (dance), gestures (technical) and highlight the lexical, syntactic and semantic features to be adapted to the European Framework of Reference for Languages (EFRL). The transmission then becomes a concept traditionality in modern and modernized world. It concerns all agents: they fall within traditional education that modern education

Full textThis work proposes a study of the teaching and learning of French and Creole in Haitian schools starting from the points of view of history and epistemology. From the epistemological point of view, it entends to show the limitations of the approach taken by most linguists who have worked in this area. Considering writing as simple transcription of the the spoken, theses linguists ignoe the difficulties posed by the adoption of Haitian Creole into the fields of literacy and education. A lack of consistency in the definition of grammatical concepts and a singular vision of the phrase in Creole are the two consequences that flow from this approach. If the comparative approach wishes to relate Creole and French on the syntactic level, they always leave aside the discursive and textual problematic. left to themselves, textbook writers and teachers do not dare to break away form tradition. From the historical point of view, we show that the Haitian school model inherits its principals from the French school of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This legacy consists of a complex interdiscursive and intertextual network. Generally ignored, this network is nonetheless the basis on which 85% of teachers without training rely. By repeating the speeches and texts available, theses teachers convey unconsciously, contradictions that are blocking the communicational goals envisaged by the reform school. From these two observations, this study proposes to turn to a new concept of ownership of the written and oral. This approach takes into account the impact of anthropological writing and the requirements of communicational action. Several directions haven benn suggested. The main focus will be towards a sociodiscursive orientation towards Haitian Creole

Full textFrom the 3th and 4th century of our age, the quantitative rhythm of the Latin language changed into an accentual rhythm, and the perception for the syllabic quantity of Latin words disappeared. Since knowledge of prosody is crucial for reading and writing in Latin, Medieval school teachers invented the prosodic florilegia, i.e. lists of classical and Medieval Latin verses from the most studied authors (Vergil, Ovid, Persius, Juvenal, Statius, Prudentius, etc.). Today we possess 6 different florilegia from the 9th century, which are both teaching and learning tools. My thesis consists of a critical edition of the corpus of the florilegia which endeavours to be a solid base for further study of these texts, of their compilers, and of the context in which they were used. The present critical edition will also be the starting point for investigating the circulation of Latin poets in the Middle Ages, and for highlighting networks of textual transmission and cultural practices connected to Latin poetry

Full textArticulated around the notion of “plurilingual family”, which is characterized – as well as a plurilingual individual – by a varied and not necessarily balanced linguistic repertoire, this study raises the questions of the transmission of plurilingual practices as well as their development in the institutions in charge of spreading languages, especially in the Czech diaspora background. While families, developing their transnational behaviour, head their family linguistic policies more and more consciously towards the promotion of their plurilingual capital, the diaspora institutions remain in line with a national perspective. Perceived as ambassadors of the minority language-culture in the country where they act, they view the learning of languages and cultures from their monolingual context. The methodological nationalism which, in the Czech case, is based on the political emancipation of the Czech language and culture during the constitution of the state identity, is holding up the development of a didactic of plurilingualism.This research is based on a sociodidactic approach, at the crossing of the language didactic and sociolinguistics. Its field is the Czech diaspora in three countries (France, Croatia, Russia) and it relies on a mixed corpus of semi-directive interviews, institutional speeches and participant observation

Full textWith the notice that, today, Gabonese ethnic languages are less spoken by the young, parents become more concern with the necessity to pass on their language to their children. The approach adopted here is based on the analysis of endogroup and exogroup phenomena. We examine, on the one hand the interaction process among members of a linguistic group, and on the other hand the relationships that speakers of different ethnic languages may have one another. Our study is backed upon declared usages stemming from a survey carried out in two Gabonese cities (Libreville and Lambaréné), chosen because of their multiethnic feature. It comes out from this survey that the family still stands as a trustworthy element for the transmission of ethnic languages in Gabon. However, conscious of the fact that the only domestic unit seems not sufficient enough for the maintaining of ethnic languages, we must consider their introduction in the curriculum. But with regard the failure of the various attempts to introduce ethnic languages in the education system, we start wondering about the range of the linguistic policies implemented on the national level. The review of these policies allows us to conclude that the learning of Gabonese ethnic languages needs first a language planning. Full textSituated at the crossroads between the "sociolinguistics of migration" and the sociology of mixedness, this thesis aims at identifying the factors of transmission of the Japanese language to children born of linguistically mixed unions through a study of the representations of Japanese mothers living in the Rhone-Alps region. Analyses of 28 semi-directive interviews carried out with these Japanese mothers in "mixed marriages" reveals the different reasons behind parents’ intentions to transmit or not to transmit the Japanese language. They also show the diversity of family language practices as well as the means of carrying out bilingual family education. At the same time, transmission factors related to family, social, educational, psychological and linguistic criteria are identified from the interviews. These analyses are completed by the study of the language biographies of some families in order to highlight the evolving and fluctuating character of the "family linguistic policy" and language practices that emanate from it

Full textThis thesis deals with the dynamic adaptation of context-aware applications using information related to the social environment of users to enrich the service rendered by the applications. To achieve this goal our contribution mobilizes multidimensional modeling of the different levels of social contexts, especially the weight of the relationship between the actors. Particularly, we synthesize not only social contexts related to familiarity but also social contexts reasoned from the similarity of static and dynamic communities. Two models based on respectively graphs and ontologies are proposed in order to satisfy the heterogeneity of the social networks in real life. We use the actual data gathered on online social networking services for conducting experiments and the results are analyzed by checking the effectiveness of the models. In parallel we consider the point of view of the application, and we present two algorithms using social contexts to improve the strategy of transmission of data in the opportunistic network, particularly countermeasure against selfish nodes. The simulations of real scenarios confirm the advantages of introducing social contexts in terms of success rate and delay of transmission. We carry out a comparison with other popular transmission algorithms in the literature

Full textConditions of access to language among children in diglossia context are very interesting when taking in consideration cultural and linguistic diversities. My reflection is about language practices in nurseries and pre elementary schools of Martinique. I am interested by noticing modalities about daily interactions in those areas, particularly by intentional distortions we can find in adult and child exchanges. I proceed by observing child and adult interactions in usual conditions of their exchanges. This observation is a natural one and belongs to human ethologic area (H. Montagner). Using a typology of language acts (Searle, Vanderveken) we can class collected data in five kinds of acts that represent observed exchanges. Taking in consideration diversity from collected distortions is in my opinion a prerequisite to dynamic of a necessary reciprocal comprehension for maturation of language and learning behaviors among small children in Martinique

It studies the interactional process between the Cheikh and the Taleb.We begin by studying the evolution of the didactic action started during the first islamic centuries and we evoke the advent of the founder texts in this religion,the development of the religious sciences as soon as the study of experiences that found the muslim education and teaching. Afterwards, we appeal to the different approachs and concepts linked to the process of communication and we study the interactional analysis of the audiovisual corpus of the courses in our Madrasa samples.We target by this analysis the metacommunicative protocol in its non-verbal aspects and its relation with the proximate plan.We formulate the hypothesis which says that this system regulate the didactic interaction and we consider that the way of transmission appears as a system of didactic buckles between Cheikh /Taleb,Taleb/Taleb which is the base of this chain. The interest of our investigation is to put the focus on the role which can have the elements of proximate nature,and non- verbal behaviour in the regulation of the communication in the moment of a course. In our conclusion, we consider that a good management of this regulators favours the transmission of knowledge and reduce, for the teacher the riske of the suppression of the plan of the courses

Full textThis dissertation provides insight into the complex process of how the Portuguese language, as practised within the "Portuguese community" in Montreal, is evolving and how it is changing the group's identity (re)presentations. This community, created from the migration process that began in the 1950s, is an example of linguistic integration in the particular context of Montreal where French and English dominate the linguistic landscape. The findings indicate the dynamic of the Portuguese language within the group and the evolution of the practice through the analysis of seven "weak points" in the language's structure that are consequences of its contact with the two dominant languages. In addition, based on epilinguistic discourse analysis, the research shows how the Portuguese language and its representations may help in understanding the complex process of defining the group's identity through language practises
Esta tese aborda a evolução da língua portuguesa em contexto da diáspora, e em particular a influência das práticas linguísticas nas (re)presentações identitárias da "comunidade portuguesa" de Montreal. Através duma pesquisa sociolinguística sobre as mudanças da língua em situação de contacto com outras línguas, a nossa análise linguística identificou sete "elementos de fragilidade" da estrutura da língua, através do processo de erosão da língua falada dentro do grupo, sublinhando as particularidades do contexto de contacto entre línguas. Em segundo lugar, procedemos a uma análise do discurso epilinguístico, tendo observado diferentes discursos sobre as representações da língua e das suas práticas dentro do grupo, sublinhando estas últimas enquanto marcadores fundamentais da identidade da comunidade em estudo
Questa tesi nasce dallo studio del processo evolutivo della pratica orale della lingua portoghese all'interno della "comunità portoghese" di Montreal, e in particolare del come le pratiche della lingua possano influenzare le (rap)presentazioni identitarie dei membri del gruppo nelle diverse generazioni. All'interno di una comunità minoritaria, in un contesto particolare come quello della città del Québec, dove due lingue, il francese e l'inglese, dominano il panorama linguistico, la nostra ricerca sociolinguistica ci ha permesso di osservare il percorso d'erosione del portoghese all'interno della comunità, attraverso il distaccamento di sette "punti di fragilità" della struttura della lingua portoghese, conseguenza della situazione di contatto tra le lingue. L'analisi si propone, inoltre, d'illustrare il ruolo fondamentale della lingua nel processo identitario attraverso le sue pratiche, in quanto strumento di preservazione dell'eredità culturale e linguistica propria del gruppo. In quest'ottica, la lingua è vista come una manifestazione d'identità e d'appartenenza al gruppo

Full textLa Seconde Guerre mondiale laisse dans son sillage de nombreux témoignages de l’enfer des camps de concentration et d’extermination. Bien que la grande majorité de ces témoignages furent écrits après les événements, certains récits furent, quant à eux, rédigés au moment même des faits, alors que des milliers de victimes périssaient dans ces camps nazis. C’est le cas d’un homme en particulier, Zalmen Gradowski. En effet, dans son manuscrit, Au cœur de l’enfer, il expose aux lecteurs éventuels l’horreur de son travail de Sonderkommando. Tout comme huit autres membres du Sonderkommandos, Gradowski a rédigé, dans deux manuscrits, le récit de son expérience concentrationnaire. Récit à forte teneur historique de toute évidence, le témoignage de Gradowski comporte également une importante charge littéraire. Les théories de l’énonciation ainsi que les différentes configurations littéraires définies par Philipe Mesnard, dans Témoignage en résistance, nous permettent d’analyser en profondeur la littérarité de ce manuscrit.

It requires the rebuilding of the history of the text by classifying the corpus to decide if a group of manuscripts is generated by a lost intermediary. There are many analogies between the way in which a text was copied from another text, and the way in which species were transformed into new species. Therefore, to cluster the corpus, we use methods of the computerized textual analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction in order to establish the tree or a graph of filiation or pedigree. The method employed has been developed in editing sanskrit manuscripts with all specificities of this language

Full textDecisions regarding languages, or what is called family language policy, is the main focus of the present study which deals with the transmission of English in francophone families living in France. To better understand how their decisions are taken, this research aims at analyzing the underlying parents' representations and the way they account for their choices. The results show how negative their representations of foreign language teaching in France are, which explains why they tend to favor a bilingual education for their children. Their representations of bi/plurilingualism, along with the English language, are positive and point to the fact they want to pass on a language that they are particularly fond of and which is part of their identity as plurilingual individuals. Their experience with languages, the project of bilingualism for their children, the questions raised by what it means to speak a language other than the native language, their investment and the place of the child within their decision making process enable us to better understand their family language policies

Full textThe present work focuses on teacher’s voice for its implication in the transmission of the oral message, especially when it is produced in a foreign language. We studied the factors that influence the production of the teacher’s voice, in class. In this order, we tried to define the factors from the teacher’s past, as innate or acquired attitudes and performances. Secondarily, we analysed the situational factors as teacher’s intentions communications in situation. This research insists on the way that intonation is a skill, likely to act on the level of foreign language learners. Therefore, the issue is essentially within the framework of research in language didactics at the Sorbonne Nouvelle. The theories, on which we base, relate to phonetics, the psychology and social psychology. The empirical research is based on two types of corpus: the first consists of oral and written produced by a number of Lebanese’s teachers. The second is a transcribed sound corpus, which is in an extract of courses registered in situation given by a Lebanese teacher. Finally, in proposing a research on the role of intonation parameters in the transmission of knowledge, this research hopes to contribute to research in language didactics and pedagogy in general

Full textThis thesis aims to understand the transmission practices of two teachers from a universalist handbook, used in a local context. The teachers' relationship to the rule, and the reasons that guide their differences, are at the core of our analytical approach. Placed at the crossroads of language learning and teaching, language sciences and ergonomics of work sciences, the research focuses on the linkage between prescription as an institutional constraint, and as a teaching method. The motives and the sources of transmission are plural and shared between various social actors of the class, both teachers and learners. Furthermore, they work and interact through specific semiotic tools, board and handbook to name only the main. For those reasons our reflection is necessarily multidisciplinary.The challenge of this thesis thus questions the notions of reformulation and transmission strategies. How do two teachers recast the same instructions, in the same context? By asking, we’re trying to observe and identify signs of the teacher’s action style, and to question their pragmatic effectiveness in the teaching process.Hence, our theoretical framework is mostly based on the study of educational prescriptions, the sociological theory of the social actor, in its relation to the rule, and the activity of reformulation in the discourse. It nonetheless remains that it draws generously in a broader bibliography of discourse analysis and the teacher thinking theories. On the methodological front, our approach is qualitative, based on a non-participant observation of the interaction as well as on the simple self-confrontation interview. Full textThis research looks at the contexts that are produced in language classroom interactions. These contexts are here considered as verbalized representations of the situation. Typology of such contexts is proposed and founded on the notion of "discourse world." The analysis of transcripts of lesson recordings distinguishes a set of verbal means that speakers use while producing a particular type of context. In addition, the analysis of verbal interactions shows the dynamic nature of these constructions. The uses of contexts in the classroom practice are explored from an educational point of view. In this perspective, this study focuses on how the contexts produced by participants are included in the transmission of knowledge, in teacher solicitations and learners answers, or in the teacher’s feedback. Moreover, the analysis of teacher comments on teaching practices allows a reflection on the role of contexts as teaching tools in the "teacher cognition". The main purpose of the research is to outline different features of this object from interactional and educational perspectives. The study also includes theoretical considerations developed with reference to pragmatics, interactional linguistics, microsociology and discourse analysis

Full textThe 19th century federal measures to “kill the Indian and save the man” entailed a language shift. The loss of the native language was linked to a sense of shame and a loss of cultural identity. The founding principles that used to frame the Navajos’ way of life were no longer being passed on from one generation to the next. So in the late 1960’s, the Navajos who call themselves the Diné and are well-known for their exquisite jewellery and finely woven rugs, instituted a comprehensive strategy to retain and revitalize their language and their culture. This dissertation examines how, despite intra-community conflicts over the validity of the transmission of a language and a culture through school-based education, the Navajos have implemented the revitalization of their language and culture based on the Creation Story and the teaching of the Holy People, their ancestors. If one the one hand these significant steps in sovereignty in education have managed to make the Navajo regain pride in who they are and where they come from and improved the scores in local and national tests, the Navajo Nation must make sure it will find a way to reduce the number of drop-outs, improve the standard of living of a great number of its member who live below poverty level and develop its economy and heal societal evils that hamper social individual success. The financial returns of Indian gaming may help the Navajo nation overcome these challenges, but its leaders must ensure they can cope with globalisation and they can balance Navajo and western culture while preserving their heritage so as to live in harmony in both worlds still keeping their cultural, linguistic and cultural roots

Full textThe learning of Occitan as a minority language is characterised by a dialectical relationship between cultural persistence and social change. The preservation of traditional culture forms in the modern world requires a reinterpretation and an adaptation to new social conditions. Because of the loss of cultural transmission in family and neighbourhood the school education takes more importance, but we know little about the motivation of the teenagers to take part in the learning of the Occitan language. The empirical part of the study presents an investigation among more than 500 pupils who participate in Occitan studies at lower secondary education in the southern French region Languedoc-Roussillon (fieldwork was done in 36 classes in 19 public schools and the Calandreta school near Montpellier). Although we note a great diversity of motives, the motivational orientation of the pupils remains substantially influenced by the social and cultural habitus of their family

Full textThe number of unions where both partners do not share the same mother tongue has grown substantially over the last decades in Quebec. Given that children born to these unions live in a multilingual family setting, the purpose of this research is to study the mother tongue transmitted to these children. Using the 2006 Canadian census long-form questionnaire, we first conducted various descriptive analyses. These were intended to identify the mother tongue transmitted to children born to mixed-language unions, to ascertain whether children inherit either their mother or father's mother tongue, and to determine if a language shift occurs before the age of 18 years old, in other words whether their mother tongue differs from the principal language they use at home. In addition, through logistic regressions, we examined the contextual, ethnocultural and socioeconomic determinants explaining the choice of the language transmitted to children. The results show the predominance of the two official Canadian languages in mixed-language families, at the expense of non-official languages. Furthermore, the choice of the mother tongue transmitted is mainly conditioned by the place of residence, the parent's migration path and the children's birthplace.
