Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the resources allocation for the transmission of scalable multimedia data under Quality-of-Service (QoS) constraints on heterogeneous networks. We focus on wire and wireless links (DS-CDMA, OFDMA) with the transmission of images, speech over frequency and non frequency selective channels. Resources from the physical layer are addressed : channel code rates (to protect the data against the degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio SNR), modulation orders, carriers ordering (to convey the layers) and the allocated power. The aim of this report is to allocate these parameters in order to maximize the source rate of the multimedia data under targeted QoS and system payload with a perfect or partial channel knowledge. The QoS is expressed in term of perceived quality from the End To end User and in term of Bit Error Rate per Class from the scalable source encoder. In a such context, we propose some link adaptation schemes whose novelty is to enable the truncation of the data layers. Moreover, these strategies make use of the sensivity to transmission errors and the channel state information to dynamically adapt the protection of the layers (Unequal Error Protection UEP) in accordance with the QoS requirements. These procedures explore multiple resources optimization criteria : the minimization of the system payload and the maximization of the robustness to the channel estimation error. For each one, we perform the optimal allocation (bit loading) of the previous parameters that maximize the source rate while ensuring the constraints of the receiver. We show that these schemes fit to any communication system and we present the performances and compare them to the State Of The Art procedures

Full textWith the advances in 3D models editing and 3D reconstruction techniques, more and more 3D models are available and their quality is increasing. Furthermore, the support of 3D visualisation on the web has become standard during the last years. A major challenge is thus to deliver these remote heavy models and to allow users to visualize and navigate in these virtual environments. This thesis focuses on 3D content streaming and interaction, and proposes three major contributions. First, we develop a 3D scene navigation interface with bookmarks -- small virtual objects added to the scene that the user can click on to ease reaching a recommended location. We describe a user study where participants navigate in 3D scenes with and without bookmarks. We show that users navigate (and accomplish a given task) faster when using bookmarks. However, this faster navigation has a drawback on the streaming performance: a user who moves faster in a scene requires higher streaming capabilities in order to enjoy the same quality of service. This drawback can be mitigated using the fact that bookmarks positions are known in advance: by ordering the faces of the 3D model according to their visibility at a bookmark, we optimize the streaming and thus, decrease the latency when users click on bookmarks. Secondly, we propose an adaptation of Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), the video streaming standard, to 3D textured meshes streaming. To do so, we partition the scene into a k-d tree where each cell corresponds to a DASH adaptation set. Each cell is further divided into DASH segments of a fixed number of faces, grouping together faces of similar areas. Each texture is indexed in its own adaptation set, and multiple DASH representations are available for different resolutions of the textures. All the metadata (the cells of the k-d tree, the resolutions of the textures, etc.) is encoded in the Media Presentation Description (MPD): an XML file that DASH uses to index content. Thus, our framework inherits DASH scalability. We then propose clients capable of evaluating the usefulness of each chunk of data depending on their viewpoint, and streaming policies that decide which chunks to download. Finally, we investigate the setting of 3D streaming and navigation on mobile devices. We integrate bookmarks in our 3D version of DASH and propose an improved version of our DASH client that benefits from bookmarks. A user study shows that with our dedicated bookmark streaming policy, bookmarks are more likely to be clicked on, enhancing both users quality of service and quality of experience

Full textThis thesis focuses on the transmission strategies of the multimedia content in wireless networks. The advantage of a such strategy is its ability to manage the resources, according to the objectives of the targeted applications. We propose a transmission scheme, which guarantees the quality of service (QoS), depending on the channel state information and on the multimedia content specifications. We take advantage of the radio channel diversities (spatial, frequency, etc.). ln fact, the association of MIMO and OFDM techniques appears as effective solution to increase the system performance. For this reason, we propose a MIMO-OFDMA system, which considers cross-layer srtategies based on link adaptation schemes to dynamically adjust the system parameters. Firstly, we develop a PHY/APPL cross-layer strategy, dedicated to a single user of a MIMO-OFDMA system, which transmits an H.264/SVC video. The Iink adaptation scheme allows to define the optimum parameters, which minimize the end-ta-end video distortion by using an optimization algorithm under power and bit error rate constraints. To consider the realistic transmission aspects, we propose a PHY/MAC cross-layer strategy, dedicated to a multi-user, multi-service, MIMOOFDMA system. This scheme combines a scheduling policy with optimal parameterization to provide a satisfied troughput to a maximum number of users, acheiving the required services. Finally, the first two solutions are combined to determine the optimal parameters which minimize the end-ta-end distortion of the received video by user, and also acheive QoS requirements of the other services

Full textThe Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technique permits several users communicating simultaneously and asynchronously on a common resource. This technique consists in the allocation of a specific and distinct code signature to each user. For several decades, this has been studied to provide access in optical systems (Optical CDMA or OCDMA). The used coding is a key element which can either be in one dimension (1D) or in two dimensions (2D). The work undertaken in this thesis concerns 2D coding for incoherent OCDMA systems. The objective is to enable a high number of users simultaneously communicating at high data rate for a given performance. In this context, we proposed in this report a 2D code family construction named Multi-Wavelength Optical Orthogonal Codes (MWOOC) and we investigated various receiver structures to evaluate its performance. Future access networks are also expected to provide diversity of services. From the proposed 2D MWOOC coding, a methodology based on the code partitioning is developed in order to carry out quality of service (or Binary Error Rate BER) differentiation. The data rate differentiation is performed by allocating several codes to each user (parallel mapping). Then, the performance analysis is theoretically established in terms of data rate and quality of service. We show that the developed method yields a high flexibility for future multimedia applications in optical access networks

Full textIn this thesis, we are interested on the performances optimization of multimedia transmissions systems with an original contribution combining RF circuits' imperfections presented by the power amplifier (PA) nonlinearities and the transmission channel distortions. The studied system uses the OFDM technique which is the most widespread multicarrier modulation in recent radio communications systems. However, its major drawback is the high PAPR value, which degrades the transmission quality due to the PA nonlinearities. To reduce the PAPR, we first propose to improve the TR method in terms of convergence speed and PAPR reduction, by studying several optimization algorithms. We show that the conjugate gradient algorithm provides the best performance while respecting the frequency specifica-tions of the IEEE 802.11a standard. Thereafter, TR method has been evaluated experimentally in the presence of a commercial PA (SZP-2026Z) and using a measurement bench. It is shown that the TR method improves the quality of service (QoS), with 18% reduction in PA power consumption. The experimental study has resulted to choosing a realistic PA model consider-ing memory effects. This PA model has been integrated into a SISO simulation chain includ-ing also a realistic channel model. This chain is used to evaluate the TR method performances under realistic transmission conditions. Finally, we propose to apply the TR method in a closed-loop MIMO-OFDM chain dedicated to the transmission of scalable multimedia con-tent in a realistic context with the IEEE 802.1n standard. This study presents a new contribu-tion of the TR method evaluation to improve the visual quality of the JPWL transmitted imag-es, considering in the same time the multimedia content, the PA nonlinearity and the channel transmission distortions

Full textThis thesis deals with the integration of multimedia traffic on the uplink of the UMTS radio interface. The problem is tackled in its globality, considering jointly the resource sharing possibilities, a good characterization of the traffic to transmit and the possibilities opened in the UMTS standard. The attention is more particularly focused on MPEG4 video and data of the Internet type. The first part of the thesis provides an approach of radio resource sharing in WCDMA mode. The performances of the physical layer multiplexing mechanism with quality of transmission differentiation and the impact of the rate matching mechanism are evaluated. This analysis serves as a basis for the construction of a cost function for estimating the multiservice cellular capacity and the proposition of a quality of transmission adaptive balancing method. The second part of the thesis presents a new statistical model for MPEG4 video traffic. This model consists in a customization of the DBMAP process and allows evaluating the queueing performances analytically. The last part of the thesis integrates this set of works yielding a cooperative scheduling strategy that efficiently multiplexes the packets generated by real time and non real time multimedia applications while respecting the integrity and delay constraints. An analytical method based on M/G/1 type queueing systems theory is given for computing the delays incurred by MPEG4 video and data packets when this strategy is implemented in a UMTS network

Full textMultimedia applications in WSNs convey large data (image, audio and video) that requires high transmission rate and intensive treatment and therefore high energy consumption. Effectively transmit these heterogeneous flows, while ensuring their reliability and guaranteeing QoS requirements, with the limited resources available, especially in critical contexts, remains an open scientific problem. That is why, in this thesis, we are interested in aspects related to : routing, fault tolerance and interference management in WMSNs.Given the very low number of routing protocols, that have approached the experimental phase and still less those who approached it during data transmission in real time, we developed in this context, a geographic routing protocol baptised GNMF (Geographic Non-interfering Multipath Fault-tolerant),First, we improved node's selection mode used by the greedy-forwarding, to deal with local minimum problem, where a multi-criteria objective function (distance, energy and reception power) related to next-hop choice has been defined. Then, we introduced an optimization phase of built paths to eliminate loops and an adaptive approach to manage simultaneous traffic transmissions. After that, we oriented towards fault tolerance, to ensure transmitted data reliability and network connectivity. To this end, we modeled the number of lost packets during package delivery and proposed two mechanisms. The curative is used when sudden failures occurs and the preventive to anticipate batteries depletion. Both are combined with a dynamic failover strategy during alternative paths construction. Finally, we presented an interference model and a third mechanism that limits interactions between adjacent links. In addition, we also defined a path loss model in a multipairs environment (source, sink) and computed the error probability coefficient based on a distance function that separates the data flows. A new metric has been added in the objective function, related to noise sum of the active nodes that interferes on forwarding set nodes of the current node.Obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed approaches that have been studied and validated both by simulation and on an experimental testbed

Full textRecent advances of inexpensive and low-power CMOS cameras and MEMS mi- crophones have led to the emergence of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs). WMSNs promise a wide spectrum of potential applications which require to ubiquitously capture multimedia content (visual and audio information). To support the transmission of multimedia content in a resource constrained environment, WMSNs may require a certain level of quality of service (QoS) in terms of delay, bandwidth, jitter, reliability, quality level etc. In this thesis, we consider Wireless Image Sensor Networks (WISNs) where sensor nodes equipped with miniaturized visual cameras to provide accurate information in various geographical parts of an area of interest can be thrown in mass for mission-critical applications such as intrusion detection or search & rescue. An innovative and important aspect of this thesis is to take into account the criticality of applications. The network adopts an adaptive scheduling of image sensor node’s activity based on the application criticality level, where each node computes its cover-sets. So, event detection triggers the simulataneous transmission of a large volume of visual data from multiples sources to the Sink. The main objective of this thesis is to optimize this simultaneous transmission of images that can degrade network performance. With this goal in mind, we first proposed a multi-criteria approach to select the suitable cover-sets to be activated for reliable transmission of images in mission-critical applications. The proposed approach takes into account various parameters that affect the image quality at the Sink in a multi-hop transmission network and guarantees a compromise between autonomy and criticality. A modified version of GPSR routing protocol supporting the transmission of multimedia streams ensures the transfer of images from selected sources to the Sink. The second contribution consists in an optimized selection strategy based on 2-hop neighborhood information to determine the most relevant cover-sets to be activated to increase reliability for image transmission. This selection approach prioritizes the application’s criticality. A multipath extension of GPSR, called T-GPSR, wherein routing decisions are based 2-hop neighborhood information is also proposed. A performance study of the sink mobility on proposals based on 2-hop information is our third contribution

Full textIn large industrial companies, the transmission of the embodied in professional practices traditionally takes place as part of a series of training courses given by former operators and of journeyman practices implemented directly on site. This situation will undoubtedly change, because nowadays many companies are facing the problem of a massive departure of operators into retirement. This requires, on the one hand, the preservation of the appropriate professional gestures for the maintenance of aging technical plant, and on the other hand an adaptation of the professional gestures to technological evolution. In the energy sector, Electricité de France (EDF) is also confronted with this issue of the evolution of these journeyman practices. For the company, the situation is rendered more complex as a result of highly variable practices due to the presence of almost one hundred power generation plants with a wide geographic distribution, and with diversified generation methods involving different cultural practices (nuclear, thermal, hydraulic). The present research addresses two objectives:(1) On the theoretical level, we sought to understand, based on field data, the nature of the explicit and implicit transmission and formalization of knowledge underlying the performance of professional gestures. This takes place: - on the one hand, by means of the confrontation of the existing approaches in the different schools, at international level, with the empirical reality; - and, on the other hand, by means of the identification of the gap in the literature as concerns the treatment and modelling of tacit knowledge and embodied know-how as compared to the practical requirements of transmission.(2) On the practical level, we sought to develop an approach to situational learning of embodied know-how by exploring the recourse to digital ethnography tools. This aims:- on the one hand, to perpetuate the knowledge linked to the gestures;- and, on the other hand, to devise a method for the creation of structured, video-based educational supports. This practical phase has afforded the opportunity to test our models on real life cases. The combination of technical, theoretical and methodological tools we applied has led to the design of several products. We designed, and tested on the field, a method for the capture and analysis of professional gestures. This method is based on dual video recordings: an external camera and a subjective camera mounted on the safety helmet of the operator performing the gesture. This recording is coupled to a specific protocol of oral expression whilst performing the gesture. We also modelled, tested and formalised a teaching resource in an educational setting: the Multimedia platform for APprenticeship (MAP). It is based on a decomposition and structuring of the gesture illustrated primarily by annotated video but also by means of functional schematics images, photos, etc. This decomposition results from the analysis of the gesture carried out upstream and based on Russian Activity Theory and Perceived Quality. These two products provide an operational chain intended for the trainers of EDF’s Training Division, for the capture and transmission of the tacit and explicit knowledge involved in professional gestures. The incorporation of the MAP into EDF’s educational system, in real life training sessions, has been very positively evaluated and received by both trainers and trainees. In May 2011 it was decided to launch the industrialization phase of the method and the MAP throughout the company

Full textThe high throughputs supported by the multimedia multicast services (MBMS) and the limited radio resources result in strong requirement for efficient radio resource management (RRM) in UMTS 3G networks. This PhD thesis proposes to solve the MBMS RRM problem as a combinatorial optimization problem. The work starts with a formal modeling of the problem, named as the Flexible Radio Resource Management Model (F2R2M). An in-depth analysis of the problem complexity and the search landscape is done from the model. It is showed that, by relaxing the OVSF code constraints, the MBMS RRM problem can be approximated as a Multiple-Choice Knapsack Problem (MCKP). Such work allows us to compute the theoretical solution bounds by solving the approximated MCKP. Then the fitness landscape analysis shows that the search spaces are rough and reveal several local optimums. Based on the analysis, some metaheuristic algorithms are studied to solve the MBMS RRM problem. We first show that a Greedy Local Search (GLS) and a Simulated Annealing (SA) allow us to find better solutions than the existing approaches implemented in the UMTS system, however the results are instable due to the landscape roughness. Finally we have developed a Tabu Search (TS) mixed with a Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) algorithm and we have compared it with GLS, SA and UMTS embedded algorithms. Not only the TS outperforms all the other approaches on several scenarios but also, by comparing it with the theoretical solution bounds generated by the MCKP solver, we observe that TS is equal or close to the theoretical optimal solutions

Communication unrolled a key role in human evolution. With the advent of mobile communications it became possible to communicate at a distance, but only the voice was transmitted. Later technology development allowed the exchange of video between two distant points, but the infrastructure was limited. The Internet has to offer exchange information efficiently and adaptively, appealing features for real-time communications. The banality of this set of technologies enabled companies to lower their costs by integrating telephony for the same. This action has become a necessity installed from the economic crisis in recent years. This change builds up the benefit of the business entities that can conceive close interactions between its services and the media referred. The improvements to multimedia content currently continue at various levels, equipment or mechanisms are dedicated to the quality of them, all due to the implications of communications in real-time. An interesting part of this progress is the application of voice and video in multiple collaborative environments, such as business meetings, online games or play activities. For these purposes, the range of applications is growing but still limited, requiring knowledge of installation or configuration, creating difficulties to the typical Internet user. In this document it’s proposed a solution that would minimize the obstacles that current solutions present to its users. Based on HTML5, this application offers a service where three or more participants have the ability to communicate and collaborate requiring only their browser. A detailed study of emerging web technologies will be made to acquire the essential technological bases to be implemented on the target system.

Since the inception of the Internet there are a lot of ways to share files, but still to this day it is arguable if there’s a best one. The palatability of the general public for multimedia content created the need for new platforms of content distribution like Google Play, Netflix, Apple Store and some others. Contents that are distributed in a centralized way and that lead to great infrastructure costs to these entities. On the other hand, P2P networks allow the distribution of content in a decentralized way with low costs, these however require specific applications and technical knowledge, which is a barrier between the consumer and the contents that are available in these platforms. In this thesis a prototype of a new solution is developed, using upcoming HTML5 standards like WebSockets and WebRTC to introduce a new perspective to how users can share and consume content. In simple terms, the approach of this thesis is to bring the BitTorrent network into the browsers using only javascript, taking advantage of its ease of use by not requiring any kind installation. Using WebRTC this thesis focused in how to grow the browser’s network while being decentralized, encouraging content consumption in communities of users in an effort to increase privacy and resilience to censorship as well as mitigate scaling limitations of the solution. Results of this research demonstrate that some concepts used in this thesis have unique advantages that are relevant to the general public, however they come at the cost of some inherent limitations that should be mitigated.

Full textThe present work aims to address the wireless transmission of digital audio, based on two main objectives: the emergency support to people in places without coverage of GSM networks (Global System for Mobile)) and the remote monitoring of environmental acoustic phenomena. Prototypes have been developed for two-way communication, broadcasting of recorded messages and transmission of deferred messages for use in remote locations without access to the GSM network or with access sealed or conditioned by extreme conditions (namely natural disasters, fires and accidents with a high degree of destruction). Another aspect developed was the recording of audio in high quality 12 bits and 44.1 kHz (with the goal to collecting acoustic information in remote locations), using prototypes with memory card and subsequent sending to a receiver. Several propagation scenarios were tested in real environment for the different types of prototypes concerned. For voice quality systems, under normal conditions, a successful connection was obtained about 2 km away. For high-quality recording and transmission prototypes, the results were equally satisfactory, with a low error rate and unchanged audio. Initially, the radio component nRF24L01++was studied as an integrated module with Arduino. XBee was then considered as an alternative radio potential. The first was chosen because this component allows a maximum transmission throughput of 2 Mbps, access to the medium with reduced latency and its alleged low power consumption.

This thesis is a report of my professional experience in the last six years of work, and intends simultaneously address the issue of television experience, and try to understand how far it can improve with the introduction of graphics and other content coming from the graphical computer context on television. This work was developed as a standalone report in the work developed by the author, in company 'wTVision', and focuses on three aspects, which become case studies: Formation; Studio Graphics Operation; Live Shows Operation. The area that is the mais focus is the sports events, since that among all the areas in the television panorama, this is the one that requires more graphical richness and more differentiated products requires to achieve a winning television product. Through the analysis of six wTVision products indicated for specific TV productions, we intend to prove that the television experience has been improving with the supply of grahical content, thus facilitating the workflow procedures inside a television production center. At the end of the work, we intend to investigate how far the television experience was enriched, based on the studies of Roger Silverstone and his book 'Television and Everyday Life. "

he purpose of the current dissertation is to investigate the intention of consumers to channel usage when engaging in electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) communications, in a context of multichannel, multimedia and multiscreen environment. The study explores consumer’s motivations for eWOM in order to understand what takes consumers (1) to engage in this type of communication, specifically in the airline services industry, and (2) associate these motivations to channel usage intention and consequent multichannel behavior. A questionnaire was conducted, with a sample of 103 Portuguese adults, in order to perform a quantitative statistical analysis with factor analysis and linear regression between the variables. Findings suggest that eWOM motivations influences multichannel behavior, being concern for others, helping the company, and venting negative feelings the principal motivations for a multichannel behavior. Additionally, obtained findings suggest that perceived channel knowledge has a positive important in explaining consumer’s choice of online channels. The research offers suggestions to develop multichannel strategies in a context of eWOM intentions as this study advances knowledge in the multichannel management field by investigating why and how consumers choose channels for transmitting eWOM.
