Many rural communities in South Africa do not have running water or electricity. The fetching and heating of water is therefore a time consuming and expensive daily ritual. The use of energy sources such as wood or coal are not readily available and cause environmental pollution. Although solar water heaters are commonly available in South Africa, they are very seldom used in rural areas. Whilst this can mostly be attributed to a high system cost, current designs also do not cater for specific rural problems such as the transporting or purification of water. In situations of increasing global energy demands and rising energy costs, conserving energy becomes a very important issue. Energy efficiency is one of the best and the most frequently used indicators of energy use. Energy intensity in transport is a measure of the energy efficiency in the sector. The main objective of this paper is to determine whether there was energy efficiency Belize’s Road passenger transport sector from 2000 to 2008. This

Large medium-speed catamarans are currently under development as a new class of vessel for economically efficient and more environmentally sustainable fast sea transportation. Their design is based on current high-speed catamarans, to adopt advantages such as large deck areas and low wave-making resistance, but they will operate at lower speeds and carry a higher deadweight to obtain higher transport efficiency. They operate at speeds around the main drag hump, where the wave-making drag coefficient is at its maximum. Hence this speed range is usually avoided by boat designers no precise

Low power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) such as wireless sensor networks are currently used in many important applications fields such as remote environment monitoring and target tracking. This deployment has been enabled by the availability, especially in recent years, of embedded micro-controller devices that are smaller and cheaper. These devices are equipped with wireless interfaces, with which they can communicate with each other to form a network. In this thesis we focus on studying the energy consumption of reliable transport protocols over LLNs. Recently, much research has been carried out

Membrane desalination using reverse osmosis (RO) has been the leading candidate technology for supplying fresh water in recent years. However, there is a strong motivation for improving the established membrane process and/or developing alternative membrane technologies to overcome the limitations of high energy cost and brine discharge problems of RO technology. In the later context, pervaporation is a potential membrane technology as it has the advantage that the energy need is essentially independent of the concentration of the salt feed water. The pervaporation process combines the e

Providing efficient data transport is one of the uppermost objectives in the design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) since the primary role for each sensor is to report the sensed data to the data sink(s). This thesis focuses on designing efficient data transport schemes for WSNs in the dimensions of energy consumption and time respectively. The developed schemes can be directly applied in a number of applications such as intrusion detection, target tracking, environment monitoring, etc., and can be further extended to underwater acoustic sensor networks and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) n
