Traumatic brain injuries are a significant health concern, being responsible for over 52,000 deaths each year. Unfortunately, many traumatic brain injuries often go misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. Primary care providers are the principal and first source of medical contact for individuals, meaning that they are vital in the diagnosis of previous traumatic brain injuries in order to prevent future sequelae. Compassion fatigue (CF), also known as secondary traumatic stress (STS), impacts critical care nurses (CCN) through exposure to pain, suffering, and loss of those for whom they provide care and results in a reduction of compassion satisfaction (CS). Background Estimates of 1.6 million to 3.8 million concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) occur annually in adolescent athletes participating in contact sports (Daneshvar et al., 2011). Current clinical guidelines call for interventions to include education, assessment, screening, and long term management of injury by the adolescent's primary care provider (PCP) (Giza et al., 2013).
