Full textThe practice of garbage recollection, cartoneo, is deeply attach to the transformations of me world of labor as much as it reflects part of social structure transformations, especially in relation to popular classes. Thus, it allows to think about who does the forms in which these classes inscribes in me society changes. This thesis wonders about me relationship between popular sectors and labor, in a context in which me industrial form of the latter is in crisis. There is not a single way of working, and it neither exist a single form of thinking and signifying labor. The multiplicity of possible works is related to me symbolic universes mat it structures and mat structures it. If the historical relation of the classes that live on their work modifies in relation to the form and conditions in which this is carry out, what happens in relation to work as a practice and to the way in which it is experimented and constructed as such? What characterizes it as labor? ln which way me relationship between labor, family and territory is modified ? How Iabor is experimented and signified ? In order to answer these, I will analyze the ways of life of those who dedicate themselves to recollection. This kind of study will allow understanding how these families organized their economic practices, and also the place that the cartaneo has in their familiar reproduction strategies. In this sense, this thesis pretends to give account of the compIex way in which a quotidian form of organization and a specific practice, salir a cartonear, articulate and redefine each other

Full textThis thesis analyzes the industrial accidents and its effects on the social-professional trajectories of North-African immigrants workers in the construction branch industry (BTP) in France. Victims of the Industrial accidents, thèse workers, culturally and ethnically discriminated, are confronted with employers conflicts on the one hand, and institutional actors in charge of their allowance health and professional reinsertion, on the other. Part of this conflict-ridden interaction involves the institution's objective of evaluating their workforce integrity and their good gênerai and psychological health state. When their career is modifieted or interrupted due to a more or less serious health problem, thèse immigrants are temporarily or definitively set down from workforce. From that point, the sudden eut in their professional career provokes a reorganization of their families whose members have to deal with the fallout of the new social reality generated by the physical incapacity. The spouses and children get involved through individual or collective actions to counter the risk factors of group family's exclusion and insecurity. In addition to family members who assume new rôles and status following the break-up of the patriarchal model of immigrant North-African family in France, measures for subsidising and providing social support have revealed the limits of the institutionnal actors rôle, who in some cases manifest discriminatory practices toward thèse workers and their families struggling for a place, a participative membership of the global society

Full textIn this dissertation, we investigate the professional and familial aspects of employment instability among young under-qualified workers. Our study employs contributions from the sociology of work to interpret the increasing importance of professional mobility. Additionally, ressources of sociology of public policies are mobilized to define the role given to the familial institution in state management of the duty to integrate young people in the workplace. The qualitative investigation with young adults from thirty to thirty-five years old, in Seine-Saint-Denis (France), points out that familial support is rarely expressed for issues of employment. The majority of them continues to live under the family roof far beyond the normal ages of juvenile decohabitation. This long-term intergenerational proximity reveals some distortions of family ties and interdependence; we show in particular the existence of 'pacts of stabilization' between various generations

Full textThe thesis explores the nature and variety of forms that gender relations may take within a West African society that is characterized by significant geographical dispersion. The current study focuses on analyzing the dispersion-induced changes in intra-familial relations between men and women within a specific lineage segment. Though scattered over several territories, this lineage segment is concentrated mainly in three places: a village in the Kayes region of Mali, Mali's capital Bamako and the Paris region in France. The study starts by developing alternatives to the current androcentric analysis of this milieu and its social structure. In the second part, we investigate two questions concerning the management of the domestic unit. The first is about the exploitation of women within such units. The second concerns the possible connections between the women' s access to money and their reach for autonomy. Finally, we investigate the mechanisms used to oppress women, as well as strategies these women can and do use to resist this oppression. In summary, we reveal evidence for a complex interplay of intersecting power relations. The power relations between women and men within the lineage segment are crisscrossed by power relations between age-cohorts and those between members connected to the lineage by filiation and those by marriage. And added to this, we find hierarchies and power relations engendered by the localities with which the respective members are affiliated
Jacquemin, Mélanie. "Sociologie du service domestique juvénile : "petites nièces" et "petites bonnes" à Abidjan." Paris, EHESS, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007EHES0108.
Full textThe first section describes young and adolescent girls' domestic work in Abidjan as a fundamental component of urban life and urban economy. This study clarifies the over-representation of a female age group (5-19 year-old) in the city, a long-standing demographic phenomenon. By gathering oral sources, ethnographical observations and written documentation, the second part shows how a specific market of child domestic labour has been progressively constituted in Ivory Coast. From fieldwork, three models of hiring are drawn, within which several types are characterised. The practices of putting girls to work and the relations between the women « bosses » and the « girls » are then explored, which brings to light the effects of the deepening economic recession on domestic production. The third and last part is interested in the recent media coverage of the phenomenon of little maids in Ivory Coast. It presents a critical analysis of Ivoirian and international media

Full textThis work focuses on the study of French people born in the overseas departments (DOM) who have immigrated to France. It is mainly based on statistical data from the population census carried out by the French national institute of statistics, INSEE, in 1990 and 1999, supplemented by the survey « Trajectoires et Origines » and a questionnaire-based field survey. The theoretical framework enables an analysis of the history of the overseas departments and their populations. Ways in which people born in the DOM become integrated in metropolitan France are observed through instances of socialisation such as family, school or the workplace. The aim of the thesis, then, is to employ relevant sociological concepts and existing work in the field to examine processes of integration of DOM-born immigrants
