Full textWomen's economic activity rates and family policy are two topics which have rarely been analysed in conjunction and which have been largely ignored in economic theory. However, because of the intermediate position they occupy between the social and economic spheres, they are directly related to the significant changes that have taken place in the productive system and in the social organisation of modern societies. A quantitative, institutional and historical economic methodology enables us to clarify the veritable relationship between family policy and the economic activity rates of women with dependant children in france. A long-term historical perspective, through analysis of the emergence of the family allowance system and the history of women's employment, serves to shed some light on the different stages of the progressive social construction of an opposition between women's economic activity and fertility rates as the degree of state intervention increases. The single salary allowance (allocation de salaire unique) can be taken as an illustration of the institutionalisation of the opposition between women's economic activity and fertility rates. Since the value of this allowance varies according to the birth rank of children, it has a differential influence on women's decision to leave the labour market according to the total number of dependant children and also according to the historical reforms of family policy. Based on an original empirical analysis of the value of family allowances (for three different types of family size) in relation to women's average wagerates, this thesis demonstrates that, from 1954 onwards, the increase in women's economic activity rates varies according to three distinct periods. Each of these periods illustrates a specific relationship between women's activity rates and the value of the family allowance. Thus, the number of dependant children can be taken as a determinant variable in the analysis of the influence of family policy on the changes in women's economic activity rates over time. It enables us to introduce a number of institutional variables which help to overcome the shortcomings of previous analyses of this phenomenon

The purpose of this master thesis is to evaluate the effects of working in an indoor swimming pool environment on respiratory health of lifeguards in the Québec province. We studied the relationship between occupational exposure to indoor swimming pools environment and multiple irritative and respiratory symptoms, as well as various asthma-related outcomes. During the spring 2014, a self-administered online questionnaire documented answers from 870 lifeguards. Exposed workers in the past year experimented more cough, throat and eye irritation in the past twelve months than non-exposed workers for the same period of time. Many work-related symptoms were statistically associated with exposure over lifetime. Among asthmatic subjects, exposed ones during the past year presented a higher risk of having asthma crisis in this period than non-exposed subjects. Considering the effects on respiratory health reported by this study, it seems necessary to evaluate the need to put in place monitoring and control systems to improve air quality of indoor swimming pools, in order to ensure the safety of the workers, as well as the safety of other users.

Full textThe main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the potential contribution of certain work conditions of the parents on the family and, ultimately, on the psychological well-being and educational success of young Canadians. Young people refer to the cohort aged 12-15, who typically attend High school. This project is from the large sample of Canadian data from the NLSCY - the national longitudinal survey of children and youth - Statistics Canada. The themes identified in this study are at the heart of current social issues. It is now recognized that educational success represents major social concerns giving rise to large mobilizations. Family remains an anchor point in the development of young people and their success. On the other side, it is clear that the work world has profound impacts, which affect the psychological health of workers and, consequently, the harmonization of work and family. Thus, the difficulty of balancing work and family can have an impact on the psychological well-being of the parents and, incidentally, can negatively affect family dynamics, well-being and educational success of young people. This thesis aims to understand the impacts of the work of parents on the family and on their children in adolescence. Specifically, the purpose of this project is to acquire of a better understanding of the dynamics between work, parental conditions, psychological well-being or educational success, in order to develop an explanatory framework based on a multidimensional model. This study, based on multivariate context, relies on the ecological perspective of human development proposed by Bronfenbrenner (1979). The model used for this study highlights factors in interaction that characterize different environments in which adolescents are living. The scientific writings allowed identifying an empirical model that provides a relational structure of those factors. Few studies to date have attempted to integrate all of these factors in a model. The results of this project can help guide the development of preventive strategies and the promotion of intervention programs, both in the field of education and management. The proposed model assumes an influence of parental work conditions on family environment (family functioning, psychological well-being of the parents or parenting), which, in turn, impacts on the psychological well-being of adolescents or their educational success. The variables included in this model were selected on the basis of empirical support in the scientific literature. The data come from the large sample of NLSCY, which was designed to collect detailed information on the factors that affect the cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the behavior of children and young people. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed model. The main results of this thesis are presented in the form of articles. Structural equations model analysis allowed validating the adequacy of the postulated model, which suggests a chain of associations in which the parents work appears to contribute indirectly, through family dynamics, to the psychological well-being or educational success of adolescent.

Full textOBJECTIVE: To investigate interaction between psychosocial and postural work factors on the incidence of self-reported musculoskeletal symptoms among a group of white-collar workers. METHODS: Psychosocial and postural work factors were assessed in a cohort of 2,431 white-collar workers (baseline participation: 76%, follow up participation: 91%). The job strain (Karasek’s) model and the effort-reward (Siegrist’s) model were used to characterize the psychosocial work environment. Postural factors related to Visual Display Unit work were assessed using a self-report questionnaire. Three years later, the incidence proportion of musculoskeletal symptoms at three different anatomical sites (shoulder-neck, lower back, and upper limbs) was estimated with a modified version of the Nordic questionnaire. Analyses were stratified for gender. Interaction was defined as a departure from the addition of individual risk factors and its importance was estimated with the attributable proportion due to interaction and its 95% interval. RESULTS: A significant interaction between job strain and postural factors was observed for men for the lower back. Two significant interactions between effort-reward and postural factors were observed for women in the shoulder-neck and the upper limbs regions. Several indications of interaction between psychosocial and postural work factors were observed. CONCLUSION: The simultaneous presence of postural and psychosocial risk factors seems to increase the individual pathogenic effect of each risk factor on the incidence of musculoskeletal symptoms. This interaction effect is of primary importance for work intervention practices as it means that succeeding to reduce anyone of these two risk factors will likely have the additional benefit to reduce the interaction effect of the incidence proportion of musculoskeletal symptoms.

Full textThis ethographic study, conducted over two years in a neighborhood deemed underprivileged by the state through meeting working-class and ethnicized mothers as well as administrators, educators, and staff from neighborhood schools, endeavored to understand the purpose of various initiatives proposed by the state, inviting parents into the school setting as well as the everyday life of these families. The mothers, principal caregivers of their families, are targeted by school-sponsored initiatives that are intended to acculturate families that are characterized as deficient in educators' discourse, drawing on bath ethnicity and social class. Maternai work, which structures the life of the women in our study, leads them to take principal responsibility for relationships with educational institutions and reveals the interdependence of their spheres of experience - professional, persona!, and family life -which can affect bath their availability and academic aspirations for their children. Thus, they oscillate between scholarly hopes and withdrawals in order to preserve an image of being a "good mother" through a display of involvement in their child's schooling, despite many daily struggles and often chaotic persona! trajectories, which shape their relationship to the world and its institutions. Despite the negative raie they may be cast in by the school, some women take back the ownership of the very initiatives designed to target them through a feminine conviviality that helps to interrupt the solitude of raising a student and can lead to a process of emancipation and rewarding recognition by school teams. This recognition, however, underlines implicitly the absence of those mothers who are kept away from the school by diverse difficulties and cannot benefit from these initiatives to the point of becoming "invisible" parents, thus revealing legitimate shortcomings of the school's undertakings
