Full textWomen's economic activity rates and family policy are two topics which have rarely been analysed in conjunction and which have been largely ignored in economic theory. However, because of the intermediate position they occupy between the social and economic spheres, they are directly related to the significant changes that have taken place in the productive system and in the social organisation of modern societies. A quantitative, institutional and historical economic methodology enables us to clarify the veritable relationship between family policy and the economic activity rates of women with dependant children in france. A long-term historical perspective, through analysis of the emergence of the family allowance system and the history of women's employment, serves to shed some light on the different stages of the progressive social construction of an opposition between women's economic activity and fertility rates as the degree of state intervention increases. The single salary allowance (allocation de salaire unique) can be taken as an illustration of the institutionalisation of the opposition between women's economic activity and fertility rates. Since the value of this allowance varies according to the birth rank of children, it has a differential influence on women's decision to leave the labour market according to the total number of dependant children and also according to the historical reforms of family policy. Based on an original empirical analysis of the value of family allowances (for three different types of family size) in relation to women's average wagerates, this thesis demonstrates that, from 1954 onwards, the increase in women's economic activity rates varies according to three distinct periods. Each of these periods illustrates a specific relationship between women's activity rates and the value of the family allowance. Thus, the number of dependant children can be taken as a determinant variable in the analysis of the influence of family policy on the changes in women's economic activity rates over time. It enables us to introduce a number of institutional variables which help to overcome the shortcomings of previous analyses of this phenomenon

The purpose of this master thesis is to evaluate the effects of working in an indoor swimming pool environment on respiratory health of lifeguards in the Québec province. We studied the relationship between occupational exposure to indoor swimming pools environment and multiple irritative and respiratory symptoms, as well as various asthma-related outcomes. During the spring 2014, a self-administered online questionnaire documented answers from 870 lifeguards. Exposed workers in the past year experimented more cough, throat and eye irritation in the past twelve months than non-exposed workers for the same period of time. Many work-related symptoms were statistically associated with exposure over lifetime. Among asthmatic subjects, exposed ones during the past year presented a higher risk of having asthma crisis in this period than non-exposed subjects. Considering the effects on respiratory health reported by this study, it seems necessary to evaluate the need to put in place monitoring and control systems to improve air quality of indoor swimming pools, in order to ensure the safety of the workers, as well as the safety of other users.

Full textThe main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the potential contribution of certain work conditions of the parents on the family and, ultimately, on the psychological well-being and educational success of young Canadians. Young people refer to the cohort aged 12-15, who typically attend High school. This project is from the large sample of Canadian data from the NLSCY - the national longitudinal survey of children and youth - Statistics Canada. The themes identified in this study are at the heart of current social issues. It is now recognized that educational success represents major social concerns giving rise to large mobilizations. Family remains an anchor point in the development of young people and their success. On the other side, it is clear that the work world has profound impacts, which affect the psychological health of workers and, consequently, the harmonization of work and family. Thus, the difficulty of balancing work and family can have an impact on the psychological well-being of the parents and, incidentally, can negatively affect family dynamics, well-being and educational success of young people. This thesis aims to understand the impacts of the work of parents on the family and on their children in adolescence. Specifically, the purpose of this project is to acquire of a better understanding of the dynamics between work, parental conditions, psychological well-being or educational success, in order to develop an explanatory framework based on a multidimensional model. This study, based on multivariate context, relies on the ecological perspective of human development proposed by Bronfenbrenner (1979). The model used for this study highlights factors in interaction that characterize different environments in which adolescents are living. The scientific writings allowed identifying an empirical model that provides a relational structure of those factors. Few studies to date have attempted to integrate all of these factors in a model. The results of this project can help guide the development of preventive strategies and the promotion of intervention programs, both in the field of education and management. The proposed model assumes an influence of parental work conditions on family environment (family functioning, psychological well-being of the parents or parenting), which, in turn, impacts on the psychological well-being of adolescents or their educational success. The variables included in this model were selected on the basis of empirical support in the scientific literature. The data come from the large sample of NLSCY, which was designed to collect detailed information on the factors that affect the cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the behavior of children and young people. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed model. The main results of this thesis are presented in the form of articles. Structural equations model analysis allowed validating the adequacy of the postulated model, which suggests a chain of associations in which the parents work appears to contribute indirectly, through family dynamics, to the psychological well-being or educational success of adolescent.

Full textOBJECTIVE: To investigate interaction between psychosocial and postural work factors on the incidence of self-reported musculoskeletal symptoms among a group of white-collar workers. METHODS: Psychosocial and postural work factors were assessed in a cohort of 2,431 white-collar workers (baseline participation: 76%, follow up participation: 91%). The job strain (Karasek’s) model and the effort-reward (Siegrist’s) model were used to characterize the psychosocial work environment. Postural factors related to Visual Display Unit work were assessed using a self-report questionnaire. Three years later, the incidence proportion of musculoskeletal symptoms at three different anatomical sites (shoulder-neck, lower back, and upper limbs) was estimated with a modified version of the Nordic questionnaire. Analyses were stratified for gender. Interaction was defined as a departure from the addition of individual risk factors and its importance was estimated with the attributable proportion due to interaction and its 95% interval. RESULTS: A significant interaction between job strain and postural factors was observed for men for the lower back. Two significant interactions between effort-reward and postural factors were observed for women in the shoulder-neck and the upper limbs regions. Several indications of interaction between psychosocial and postural work factors were observed. CONCLUSION: The simultaneous presence of postural and psychosocial risk factors seems to increase the individual pathogenic effect of each risk factor on the incidence of musculoskeletal symptoms. This interaction effect is of primary importance for work intervention practices as it means that succeeding to reduce anyone of these two risk factors will likely have the additional benefit to reduce the interaction effect of the incidence proportion of musculoskeletal symptoms.

Full textThis ethographic study, conducted over two years in a neighborhood deemed underprivileged by the state through meeting working-class and ethnicized mothers as well as administrators, educators, and staff from neighborhood schools, endeavored to understand the purpose of various initiatives proposed by the state, inviting parents into the school setting as well as the everyday life of these families. The mothers, principal caregivers of their families, are targeted by school-sponsored initiatives that are intended to acculturate families that are characterized as deficient in educators' discourse, drawing on bath ethnicity and social class. Maternai work, which structures the life of the women in our study, leads them to take principal responsibility for relationships with educational institutions and reveals the interdependence of their spheres of experience - professional, persona!, and family life -which can affect bath their availability and academic aspirations for their children. Thus, they oscillate between scholarly hopes and withdrawals in order to preserve an image of being a "good mother" through a display of involvement in their child's schooling, despite many daily struggles and often chaotic persona! trajectories, which shape their relationship to the world and its institutions. Despite the negative raie they may be cast in by the school, some women take back the ownership of the very initiatives designed to target them through a feminine conviviality that helps to interrupt the solitude of raising a student and can lead to a process of emancipation and rewarding recognition by school teams. This recognition, however, underlines implicitly the absence of those mothers who are kept away from the school by diverse difficulties and cannot benefit from these initiatives to the point of becoming "invisible" parents, thus revealing legitimate shortcomings of the school's undertakings

Full textIn some of Quebec’s unionized sectors, important initiatives have been deployed in order to prevent mental health problems in the workplace. For over three decades, visionary union representatives have built working peer assistance structures, won important legal struggles and have developed innovative approaches aiming to correct or improve work organization. As the neoliberal ideology and its related work organization principles contribute to intensify work, leading to a weakening of the workers psyche, and as the balance of power favors employers more and more, it seems like an opportune time to survey the experience of those visionary union representatives in order to get a better understanding of union actions regarding mental health in the workplace and its structuring process. This thesis studies Quebec’s union initiatives concerning mental health in the workplace and aiming to prevent and correct problems like psychological distress, burnout, harassment, depression, violence, work related suicide, etc. In order to achieve this objective, a mixed theoretical approach is used. On the one hand, a large philosophical perspective is adopted. Authors Thomas Hobbes, Adam Smith, Karl Marx and Hannah Arendt are referred to in order to forge a better understanding of human interactions and action. By extracting their respective views of the world, of action and of social link, an analytic model is built, which could tie the life experience of union representatives to these different views, therefore achieving a better understanding of the ideological basis on which they built up their action and how it had influenced their individual and collective history. On the other hand, the social experience theory (Dubet, 2009; 1994) is selected as a way to analyze more precisely the work of union representatives. This theory identifies three logics of action, all complementary and in tension with one another, with which all social actors must deal with: integration, strategy and subjectivation. The coexistence of these three logics means that the actor’s experience of the living world is not a simple reproduction mechanism, applying social determination learned from their predecessors. Actors are also subjects of their own experiences and capable of distancing themselves from their own socialization in order to understand their act; they take place in the world in a critic dialectic. This theory sheds a light on what eases or restrains individual and collective action in regard to mental health in the workplace and describes how union representatives mobilize themselves in order to respond to the many needs of their members. This qualitative research uses a life trajectory methodology (Rhéaume 2008; Bertaux 2006). Twenty union representatives describe the suffering work experiences (Dejours, 2008) lived by workers and present initiatives they deployed in order to help them. The situations described by the participants show how some work organization elements are linked to domination experiences (Martuccelli, 2004) and have impacts on mental health in the workplace: the collateral damage of productivism and hyperflexibility, occupational injuries, occupational diseases and horror situations in the workplace, pernicious workplace social dynamics and abusive uses of the judicial system. The study also demonstrates the extent to which union initiatives contribute to solve these problems and the key factors in that regard: interdependence, empowerment, social justice and struggle for dignity. Four categories have been forged to describe those initiatives: social link care with peer assistance, legal defense, collective agreement clauses and actions targeting the work organization. Finally, the thesis presents three union representative profiles: militance which tries to build an us in the workplace, professionalization which tries to have its utility and competence recognized, and the peer assistants which aims to develop an action centered on the self. Their meeting shows the development of a union praxis which promotes and protects dignity of work and workers.

Full textThe Cree of Eeyou Istchee face several social challenges related to living conditions and health. Household overcrowding is a determinant of health and is a significant public health issue in light of these health effects. There is evidence that Cree homes are overcrowded (especially on-reserve) and that communities have considerable health needs. It is therefore interesting to examine the effects of overcrowding on the health of Cree populations. This master's thesis addresses two questions: (1) Is household overcrowding associated with health in the Cree communities in Northern Québec? (2) Does this relationship vary by sex? I analyzed the data from the Nituuchishaayihitaau Aschii Environmental and Health Survey in Eeyou Istchee conducted between 2005-2009 which documents the health status of seven (out of nine) Cree communities in relation to various lifestyle and environmental factors. My research is cross-sectional based secondary data analyses. Descriptive analyses and logistic and linear regressions were performed. Results of the descriptive analyses show that households are relatively large (six or more adults and children) and 17% of Cree houses are overcrowded (> 2 persons per bedroom). Results of the regression analyses show that overcrowding has a protective effect on health, especially for men (vs women). In conclusion, following this study I make two main recommendations: to strengthen participatory research with the Cree communities to build measures of overcrowding and measures of health adapted to Cree culture ; and to vary research types and specifications to better understand the potentially protective effect of overcrowding on the Cree’s health, as well as its effect on gender. Keywords: Household overcrowding, household composition, self-rated health, Aboriginal health

Full textThis thesis aims at exploring to what extent globalization, through its diversecomponents, impacts the health of European workers. In a first part, we expose the socio-economicconsequences of this multi-faceted phenomenon. In a second part, we show that internationalcompetition, one of the essential components of globalization, is a risk factor for non-skilledworkers. Nevertheless, individual and organizational factors are the most likely to explain mentaland physical disorders prevalence in the population as a whole. Globalization also implies newpractices linked to firms’ internationalization strategy, another component of globalization. Weunderline that workers must acquire the skills to stay attractive in a constantly changing worldand they do not find much support in their companies. In a third part, we show that globalizationenhances the surge of the service sector in industrialized countries. In addition, the leanmanagement is implemented in those sectors and competitive pressure increases. These changesimpact the way the work is performed. Within this context, the health of workers deterioratesbecause they are exposed to changing risk factors, among them: intense of work related tointerpersonal relationships. Finally, we find that the Corporate Social Responsibility comes as ananswer to improve workers’ health and as a consequence, firms’ social and financial performance

Full textFrom various theoretical models (sociology, psychology, philosophy), this thesis questioned the relationship between socialization patterns and social classes. More specifically, the study concerns the possibility of identifying specific features of written culture and dissemination of school form gathered under the name of "scripturo-scolaires" features, in remote families of the school world. In view of the important academic failure of students from the working-class and of the gradually shared responsibility for this failure to families, we observed parents assisting their child's homework. To go forward in the knowledge of parenting practices in this role attributed to them, the choice fell on the study of the time homework located at the interface of school and family. Analyses allowed to study what parents do with their children homework and what light this support brings in terms of resistance to school domination. The study covers the follow-up of six less stable popular families in French speaking Belgium during a school year. The research allowed to show different modalities of “relation to school” and “relation to learning” arranged in multiple ways in the families. They enable us to not qualify working classes assignment to the single mode of “oralo-pratique” socialization and, thus, to progress in the knowledge of these ones

This psychotherapeutic care is thus not only a health and safety issue but also a public economy issue.By using the existential analysis as methodology, the research shows the relevance of psychoanalytic treatment for the transformation of the relationship with self and others. But the psychotherapeutic framework linked to somatic and psychiatric care in the health unitcan be efficient only if it works in conjunction with the judicial and penitential frameworks. An excessive distance between judicial, penitential and sanitary-psychotherapeutic playersexposes the patient to risk and to meaninglessness. On the contrary, an excessive closeness may lead to confusion. An interinstitutional alliance between the players is necessary according to an ethics of limits

Full textBased on the filiation rules within the Mossi, a few works have highlighted that the concept of being orphan does not exist in that society. Those works support that the oldest child or brothers of the biological father do care for the orphans after the father’s death. That idea is ingrained in the belief that the Mossi represent a collective group where individual’s wills are dissolved within the extended family expectations. In our perspective, that reference to the Mossi as a collective group seems to be simplistic. Based on direct observation and 20 interviews laid nearby households, this research aims at understanding the logics of actors about the family care to the orphans.Contrary to the biases, this research concludes that: 1) The father’s death reveals prior conflicts between the deceased and his brother, and proves to lead to conflicts that opposes the widow and her family to the family of the spouse. Those conflicts laid on the access to the heritages. Indeed, according to the lineage logic, the women appears as foreigner in their husband family. They are not allowed to inherit from their spouse, contrary to the civil law of Burkina Faso. These conflicts make detrimental the father’s family support to orphans. As a consequence, we noted that a few orphans have been transferred to their mother’s family or to non-related family on purpose of education; 2) Most of the children who have lost their mother are maintained in their father’s household. We noted that men have a sort of ego that leads them to think of orphan fosterage as a social irresponsibility. We may highlight that the step-mothers play an important role at supporting the orphans. In doing so, according to men, they appear as an illustration of the importance of the polygamy; 3) The strategy of transferring the children in order to assure their education is not always rewarded. It happens that the receiving household ask some compensations from the fostered children such as domestic chores. What is notable is that, generally, those children arrange so that their works may not restrain their education; 4) The filiation relationship does not lead to social recognition of alliance. This research brings up the necessity to enlarge the concept of the extended family in the case of orphan’s fosterage in the Mossi’s society, that is, the necessity of better defining the fact of belonging to extended family. Beyond the filiation rules, the modes of the orphan fosterage and the social and economic context do play an important role.
