Guénette, Jovan. "L'engagement des travailleurs du mouvement coopératif de Québec." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/30333.
Full textThe Cooperative movement was institutionalized along the years which contributed, for some authors, to its trivialization. This model would find himself trapped in a response to concerns on which neither the market nor the State are able to answer. This brings discord between the way people perceive the cooperatives and their mission, which aim, in part, a social change. At the same time, workplaces are undergoing changes, which brings a bigger mobilization of workers into companies. We call on their subjectivity. Organizations have to work on their internal function to make sure of the commitment of their workers. On the cooperatives side, the few studies on this topic show that the workers are more satisfied with their job because of the social agenda of the company. They would be more committed to their work because of its mission, which aims the community, rather than the market. By interrogating twelve workers from four cooperatives of Quebec City, this study wishes to see in which ways, and over what, the workers of the cooperative movement are committed. The results of this study show that the workers of the cooperative movement are indeed committed to the cooperative structure. They feel more committed to their work in a cooperative because of the attachment to colleagues, the participation in the decisionmaking process, the idea of giving advice to customers rather than trying to sell them a product, and the lack of a large hierarchy which makes the employees feel closer to their supervisors. In addition to the internal organization of the company, the belonging of the company to the local community also makes the workers more committed to it.

Full textFew sociological studies have focused on tourism workers, who are at the forefront of welcoming tourists and key elements of the tourism experience. This can be explained by the difficulty of apprehending a professional sector composed of a myriad of jobs without apparent links between them. The sociology of professions, through the notion of professional culture, nevertheless allows us to go beyond this exploded vision of employment in tourism, and to seek the existence of common traits for all these workers. By analyzing the commitment of workers in tourism hospitality, as well as their relationship to tourists and the tourist site as key elements of this culture, this thesis aims to apprehend the experience of tourism work as a homogeneous whole, without consideration for tourism jobs taken independently. Analysis of the speeches made by fifteen workers in the tourism hospitality in the Old Québec heritage site revealed the existence of a common professional culture, and therefore of a professional group of tourism workers. Despite varying levels of commitment and career paths, most tourism workers share knowledge of local place, culture, and history. Mobilized in acts of hospitality highlighting the hospitable nature of the service relationship in tourism, the goal of this knowledge is to offer an original and unique tourism experience to visitors, regardless of the type of job occupied. Another common point, the touristic place is the subject of a common representation, as a place of work and that of a product to be sold, which prevents from making use of it other than professional. Without being exhaustive, these common points make it possible to approach tourism workers as a homogeneous occupational group, linked by the same professional reality and the same culture, despite disparate jobs.

Full textThis qualitative study aims to extend the knowledge about social work in third line (i.e., hospital-based and specialized) psychiatric services. The outlook of social workers is central in our study as we asked these professionals about the meaning of their duties at work. Interviews were conducted with mental health social workers from the Mental Health Institute of Quebec City. From April to June 2015, 10 social workers were interviewed. They answered a semi-structured questionnaire divided in two sections: (1) social work practice in third line psychiatry; and (2) a practice narrative centered on an actual clinical example. Thematic content analysis based on a codification table with predetermined and emerging categories was conducted. Results and discussion: The central theme of our analysis pertains to the notion of linking, which is viewed as central to social work practices: ties created, preserved, or re-established by social workers, and involving users, families, other practitioners, and other various partners. Social workers enact various roles in third line psychiatric settings. Significantly, the way their role is understood in interdisciplinary teams influences the continuity of the collaboration itself, as well as the achievement of the goals established with clients. The case-centered practice narratives underline that clinical management in third line psychiatric settings need interventions from different collaborators and demand the use of new intervention approaches. Constructive and effective collaborations along with the addition of families in complex interventions provide great support in the realization of the users’ intervention plan or discharge plan. For social workers, the diverse forms of clinical supports, training accessibility and work flexibility facilitate their tasks. Keywords: social work, hospital practice, mental health, psychiatry.

Full textThis study aims to verify the existence of positive impacts in terms of human capital, such as the acquisition of knowledge and entrepreneurship, among Mexican workers enrolled in the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program in the province of Quebec. To do this, 30 semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals working on Île d'Orléans and in the municipalities of Saint -Augustin-de-Desmaures, Saint-Apollinaire and L’Assomption. A categorization of the experiences according to the degree of capacity building was carried out considering the state of origin, the number of trips to Canada with the SAWP, the acquisition of knowledge and its application, land ownership, the pursuit of projects and the interest to remain in the SAWP. Categories that have resulted are the survival experience, the supplementary experience, the wished entrepreneurial experience and the established entrepreneurial experience. Investigations have shown that there are benefits in several cases with these seasonal migrations.

Since the early 2000s, many immigrants have been hired as sylvicultural workers in Québec’s forestry industry. Analyzing interviews conducted with 16 of these workers and 6 of their employers, this thesis presents the different stages of their career path corresponding to their presence in sylviculture: seeking, introducing, occupying and leaving the job. Each of these stages are related with the crucial questions, for immigration matters, of socioprofessional integration, qualification and ethnicity. The analysis shows that sylviculture is considered as a more interesting option than other job opportunities, giving access to higher wages and partially neutralizing the "ethnic penalty". Ethnicity acts as a catalyst in the finding of this job, instead of as a hindrance. Two categories of workers have been identified according to their plans regarding their presence in sylviculture: "long term" versus "transiting" workers. Following these categories, three career path orientation strategies have been observed: for the former – with little education –, a "prolongation" strategy that aims to benefit from the relatively satisfying integration offered by sylviculture, and, for the latter – strongly educated –, two more strategies that rather aim an exit from the sector and the beginning of a "qualification quest" that could allow access to a better job. The "adaptation" strategy is characterized by the abandonment of pre-migratory field of training, whose access is judged too difficult; these workers’ "qualification quest" is strongly oriented by perceived labour market opportunities (work conditions and openings). On the opposite, the "persistence" strategy gives precedence to the match between job and pre-migratory field of training, even if it implies for the workers to go back to school, in order to valorize their training in Québec’s educational system. The analysis identifies typical issues linked to the general question of immigrants’ labour, but also more specific elements particular to Québec’s sylvicultural sector.

Full textEvery year, under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program, Mexicans arrive on Canadian soil to fill the labour shortages with which farmers are faced. As individual social actors in a complex web of interdependence, both the Canadian farmer and the Mexican worker have their reasons for taking advantage of the program in spite of the criticism that surrounds it. The critiques are fueled by an international debate portraying farmers as mistreating, neglecting, and abusing their employees while depicting Mexican workers as victims of the program. However, this depiction is incomplete; it neglects the farmers’ perspective. Amidst a revenue crisis and faced with an uncertain future, producers are confronted by challenges specific to market gardening. Following interviews conducted in the summer of 2006 in three regions of Québec, Montérégie, Lanaudière, and the Québec City area, results demonstrated that interdependence between foreign workers and local producers was present. The nature of farm work is explored and the results attempt to put the existing critiques of the Seasonal Agricultural Worker’s Programme into a new context.

Full textThis exploratory qualitative research analyzes the perception that skilled immigrants have of their employability. Ten Colombian skilled and qualified immigrants established in the city of Quebec were interviewed in order to identify what were the limiting factors and contributing factors that affected their employability, and the strategies they have used to find a job. The discourse analysis of the participant's interviews revealed that the professional expectations are at the center of the project to immigrate. Furthermore, this analysis reveals that despite the obstacles they must overcome to obtain the recognition of their qualifications, skilled immigrants are generally satisfied with the processes to integrate to the job market. Finally, the analysis identifies that skilled immigrants believe certain factors such as personal skills, fluency in the French language and professional field certainly contributed to successfully joining the workforce.

Full textThe socio-professional integration of the information technologies (IT) sector immigrant workforce in Quebec is not well documented. The sector is dynamic in the region and growing businesses are facing a labour shortage specific to the local economy. This would suggest the best possible integration of immigrants trained in IT, while studies on the general integration of immigrants highlight difficulties at both the provincial and regional levels. The methodology used in our study is qualitative. 28 skilled immigrants report their socio-professional situation prior to getting their first IT job in Quebec. We then study the professional trajectory of seven of them following a four step longitudinal approach, for one year (after one month, after 3 months, after 6 months and after one year to employment). To understand the integration process, this thesis taps into symbolic interactionist theory and takes a particular interest in the human experience and the symbolic dimension. It also refers to the interpretative process of Michael Piore (in Beyond Individualism, 1995) which recognizes, in today’s world, the emergence of social minorities, such as immigrants with special interests who are not recognized by institutions. The results of this approach emphasize the same barriers to professional integration as those observed with Quebec’s immigrant workforce in general. The market more specifically fails to assess and recognize the qualification and of these immigrant workers who are consequently underemployed. In the Quebec IT sector, insertion into first employment is thus conditioned by Quebec training. The integration in the labour market, studied within one year, is fraught with challenges and hides individual actions and integration strategies established by immigrants to circumvent the obstacles. In the face of this risk situation, the most surprising findings emerge. Indeed, monitoring the integration of these skilled workers over a continuous period of time brings to light the continuation of a project and an ability of agency on the part of the immigrants encountered. The study of these two dimensions posits that although some of them find themselves in a disappointing professional situation, they are not ultimately unhappy. They describe their satisfaction in terms of employment opportunities, material comfort, family plans, goods acquired, individual achievements and obstacles circumvented. Full textThis work is about the evolution of the worker's participation in the decision making and its impacts on the organizational performances of the Centre Hospitalier universitaire de Québec. First, after having defined the concept of worker's participation with the help of the industrial democracy, we built a tool to mesure it. Second, after an extensive review of the litterature about the organizational performances, we set up our own model. To examine the relationships between these two concepts, we conducted a longitudinal study covering the second half of the 90's. Our results show that if the HRM litterature assumes frequently that the new models can be applied uniformly to all employees in the same organization, in reality it is slighty different and demonstrate that without an enlarged scope, the long term performances will never be achieved

Full textWorkplaces impact significantly on employees’ psychological health. Even if small and medium sized enterprises (SME) contribute largely as employers in Quebec, mental health and psychosocial work environment issues remain misunderstood. Using a representative sample of Quebec’ working population of 4608 workers, this study aims to compare the psychosocial work environment and psychological health in Quebec organizations based on their size. Furthermore, three managers working full time in SMEs were interviewed. Results suggest that even though psychological distress does not vary with organization’s size, individuals working for very small enterprises are less likely to be exposed to effort-reward imbalance and to job strain than those from small, medium and large organizations. Also, the relationship between psychosocial risks and psychological distress differs according size. Practitioners and intervention researchers should take into account of these differences and adapt organizational interventions depending on the organization’s size and its particular needs. Keywords: small and medium sized enterprises, psychological health at work, psychosocial risks, psychosocial work environment, psychological distress, organizational size, efforts-rewards imbalance, job strain.

Full textThrough sustained efforts to establish a professional role and to develop its own psychosocial and ecological perspectives, meaningful contributions from social work are likely to improve the quality of life of people with Alzheimer's disease and related conditions and their families. However, the role of the social worker in the interprofessional teams is not sufficiently clarified and this seems to cause confusion among the clientele and other professionals. This qualitative study, which is exploratory and descriptive in nature, aims to better understand social workers' perception of their roles in people with Alzheimer's disease or a related condition and the challenges of these roles in interprofessional collaboration. The analysis of the semi-structured individual interviews with 10 participants demonstrated that the definition and contribution of social workers within interprofessional teams remains to be clarified. It was possible to document the role of social workers and to identify three role issues: ambiguity, conflict and role overload, despite a limited number of participants.

Full textWhen considering that occupational injuries are an economic burden leading to important consequences on small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs), it is important to look at the determinants of a healthy and sustainable return to work (RTW) process of a worker having suffered an occupational injury. Considering that enterprises have a decisive influence on the RTW process, the literature suggests that the RTW success rate is proportional to the size of an enterprise. However, the majority of studies are carried out with large enterprises and do not allow to understand the situation in SMEs. Given that organizational practices are fundamental to the RTW process and inconsidering that SMEs represent 95% of employers in Québec, this study aimed to explore the organizational practices of Québec SMEs in relation to the RTW of workers with occupational injuries. This study was carried out using a qualitative exploratory study design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants from 3 different stakeholders involved in the RTW process (i.e., SME representatives, workers, and healthcare professionals) to explore their experience with regards to the RTW process in Québec SMEs. The content of the interviews was reviewed using a phenomenological analysis. The results show that the SME organisational practices evoked by the participants are grouped into three themes: 1) Reducing the risks of occupational injuries, 2) Managing occupational injuries, and3) Preventing the consequences of occupational injuries. Although organizational practices for RTW are adopted by SMEs, it is noted that there are differences in the way they are implemented. Considering the large number of workers employed by Québec SMEs, the proposal for intervention stailored to the reality and needs of SMEs is likely to be beneficial to hundreds of thousands of workers, SMEs and healthcare professionals.

Full textThis research aimed to better understand the emotional difficulties (depression, anxiety, burnout, etc.) of Quebec’s child welfare clinicians and to explore the impact of these difficulties on their professional relationships (with the children and their families, colleagues and managers). By highlighting their subjective experience and experiential knowledge, the research allows to explain the emotional difficulties in a work context outside of the dominant psychiatric and psychological perspective. A sociological framework based on the concept of emotional labor as well as the clinical sociology theories of work was developed. This conceptual perspective shed’s light and articulates the contextual, organizational and individual factors that impact emotional difficulties experienced by clinicians in a child welfare setting. The research methodology is qualitative, based on semi-directed interviews at the CISSS and a CIUSSS from two different administrative geographic regions in the Québec province. The population sample is composed of thirty-one psychosocial clinicians (Professional Social Workers, Criminologists, Psychoeducators and Bachelor Professional Psychologists) working in child welfare organizations. The research results demonstrate that there are three (3) main protection factors at work (organizational mandate, work diversity, peers relations). Furthermore, the following factors were identified as impacting their emotional difficulties; three (3) contextual factors, nineteen (19) organizational factors and four (4) individual factors. From these categories two of them are structural as therefore external to individual control. As a result, targeting individual factors to explain clinicians emotional difficulties restricts the possibility of modifying their situation. Specifically, participants identified that the latest health care reform including the CISSS and CIUSSS service structure changes led to significant consequences that deeply affected their work organization and their clinical practice in the context of child welfare context. Also, the results show clinical functional impacts on their professional relationships. Negative impacts on their relationships with families and children were reported by all clinicians (decrease of intensity in service delivery, hurtful relationships with clients, lack of empathy and helpful relationship, decrease of work quality and objective and analytical abilities of clinicians). For 90% of the participants, emotional difficulties had negative impact on their relationships with their managers (anger, frustration, trustfulness, avoidance and lack of confidence) and 68% with their colleagues (isolation and withdrawal, negative emotional contamination, decrease in collaboration and lack of mutual aid). Overall, this research demonstrates the importance of protecting clinicians in a children protection mandate. Also, it shows that the emotional work that clinicians must produce, according to the requirements of the institutions involved (employer, academia and professional orders) is at the of all professional relationships in a child welfare context. This research allows in this regard to highlight the favorable conditions of emotional work, which can act as a protective filter in child welfare services. The research also allows, finally, to extend the typology of emotional work.

Full textIn some of Quebec’s unionized sectors, important initiatives have been deployed in order to prevent mental health problems in the workplace. For over three decades, visionary union representatives have built working peer assistance structures, won important legal struggles and have developed innovative approaches aiming to correct or improve work organization. As the neoliberal ideology and its related work organization principles contribute to intensify work, leading to a weakening of the workers psyche, and as the balance of power favors employers more and more, it seems like an opportune time to survey the experience of those visionary union representatives in order to get a better understanding of union actions regarding mental health in the workplace and its structuring process. This thesis studies Quebec’s union initiatives concerning mental health in the workplace and aiming to prevent and correct problems like psychological distress, burnout, harassment, depression, violence, work related suicide, etc. In order to achieve this objective, a mixed theoretical approach is used. On the one hand, a large philosophical perspective is adopted. Authors Thomas Hobbes, Adam Smith, Karl Marx and Hannah Arendt are referred to in order to forge a better understanding of human interactions and action. By extracting their respective views of the world, of action and of social link, an analytic model is built, which could tie the life experience of union representatives to these different views, therefore achieving a better understanding of the ideological basis on which they built up their action and how it had influenced their individual and collective history. On the other hand, the social experience theory (Dubet, 2009; 1994) is selected as a way to analyze more precisely the work of union representatives. This theory identifies three logics of action, all complementary and in tension with one another, with which all social actors must deal with: integration, strategy and subjectivation. The coexistence of these three logics means that the actor’s experience of the living world is not a simple reproduction mechanism, applying social determination learned from their predecessors. Actors are also subjects of their own experiences and capable of distancing themselves from their own socialization in order to understand their act; they take place in the world in a critic dialectic. This theory sheds a light on what eases or restrains individual and collective action in regard to mental health in the workplace and describes how union representatives mobilize themselves in order to respond to the many needs of their members. This qualitative research uses a life trajectory methodology (Rhéaume 2008; Bertaux 2006). Twenty union representatives describe the suffering work experiences (Dejours, 2008) lived by workers and present initiatives they deployed in order to help them. The situations described by the participants show how some work organization elements are linked to domination experiences (Martuccelli, 2004) and have impacts on mental health in the workplace: the collateral damage of productivism and hyperflexibility, occupational injuries, occupational diseases and horror situations in the workplace, pernicious workplace social dynamics and abusive uses of the judicial system. The study also demonstrates the extent to which union initiatives contribute to solve these problems and the key factors in that regard: interdependence, empowerment, social justice and struggle for dignity. Four categories have been forged to describe those initiatives: social link care with peer assistance, legal defense, collective agreement clauses and actions targeting the work organization. Finally, the thesis presents three union representative profiles: militance which tries to build an us in the workplace, professionalization which tries to have its utility and competence recognized, and the peer assistants which aims to develop an action centered on the self. Their meeting shows the development of a union praxis which promotes and protects dignity of work and workers.

Full textIn the province of Quebec, in the last decade, numerous changes have taken place at the political, legal and social levels to promote the integration of trans people. In this context, it seemed relevant to examine, using a systemic and intersectional framework, the perception of 13 psychosocial professionals specialized regarding gender diversity regarding : 1. What are the main problems, needs and issues experienced by trans people ; 2. Which possible solutions of a systemic nature can be identified to respond to these problems, needs and issues ; 3. Which individual psychosocial intervention strategies are the most appropriate for trans people of all ages in order to promote their well-being. One of the main findings of this research is that, although the psychosocial professionals recognize that Quebec offers a relatively advantageous legal position for trans communities, the systemic cisgender context still forces trans people to a daily life hampered by guilt and verbal aggression, physical, paternalistic, condescending and contemptuous attitudes in their various living environments, including during contacts with health and psychosocial professionals. In doing so, we see the need for trans people and their experiences to be more recognized, de-pathologized, protected, esteemed and embraced by society. To achieve this, it will therefore be necessary to make society more aware of this reality, to normalize it through diversified models in all systems and media, regardless of the origin, nationality, age and socio-economic status of the trans people. What is more, this will undoubtedly mean reducing the costs, delays and obligations (e.g. multiple medical and psychosocial assessments) required of people who wish to transition legally and physically.

Full textThe aim of this qualitative study is to contribute to empirical knowledge about compulsive hoarding behavior for social workers, educators, psychoeducators and other professionals involved with hoarders in order to improve services offered to these people. We tried to know how users of CSSS, who received social services for compulsive hoarding behavior, perceive and assess interventions conducted by social professionals. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six users of Centre de santé et de services sociaux of Quebec City area (CSSS Alphonse- Desjardins, Portneuf, Québec-Nord and Vieille-Capitale). They also answered the French version of the questionnaire Working Alliance Inventory – Short Version (WAI-SR). Focus group were conducted with eleven professional implicated with hoarders to complete and contextualize data. Results: Compulsive hoarding disorder is a life condition before being a psychiatric condition, and that hoarding behaviors are part of the perception that the users have of themselves, of their priorities, objectives and conditions in which they want to live. Users also have predominantly a favorable opinion about social services in CSSS, which can be linked at a good recognition of the problem. Finally, both users and social professionals perceived a lack of resources in the Quebec City area to answer the specifics needs of people with problems inherent to their compulsive hoarding behaviors. Keyword : hoarding, mental illness, therapeutic alliance, psychosocial intervention, services perception, local community service centre.
