Abstract:
Travel writing first evolved with Pausanius, a Greek geographer from the 2nd century AD (Pretzler). In the literary genre known as “Youji Wenxue,” authors such as Fan Chengda and Xu Xiake weaved geographical and topographical information into their writing while using narrative and prose. During the Song dynasty, Su Dongpo, a government official and poet, wrote about the Yangzi gorges and other remote southern places in China. In the Asian subcontinent, Sake Dean Mahomed published his travel book in 1794, The Travels of Dean Mahomed, which presented for the first time the idea of England from an Indian immigrant's point of view and altered the “Orientalist” outlook of early Western travel writings about the East. Graham Huggan expounds on how travel memoirs “supply their audience with the wonders, thrills and scandals of other times and other places.” This paper analyzes and compares both postcolonial and postmodern travel writing about the Asian subcontinent countries of India and Sri Lanka. The postmodern travel memoirs Running with the Family (Michael Ondaatje) and Mumbai New York Scranton: A Memoir (Tamara Shopsin) are analyzed using three critical travel writing elements including food, photography, and cartography. These elements are often neglected in scholarly research. The research here will show how these critical elements support postmodern travel and memoir writing while challenging Orientalism.

Abstract:
In colonial British America ‘travel writing’ found its way into many different literary genres: religious tracts, scientific accounts, and political or promotional writings, often written to make settlement attractive. Travel writing was also often devoted to mapping and describing landscapes for future travellers or settlers. Whatever its genre, however, early American travel writing is unquestionably a form that makes manifest by implication the actual mobility of the travellers themselves and the need for continued and future mobility. This paper will examine this issue in A New Voyage to Carolina (1709), by British travel writer John Lawson (1674–1711) as little attention has so far been paid to the rhetoric of his implicit assumptions about mobility and the importance of emigration. In this post-colonial context, then, this paper argues that A New Voyage stands as a substantial piece of colonial travel writing, one of whose basic, underlying themes is the importance of freedom of movement, both individual and collective. Lawson’s own experience bears this out insofar as, in addition to his travels, he was himself instrumental in the founding of two early eighteenth-century towns in North Carolina, Bath and New Bern, the latter a community of about 300 Palatine and Swiss emigrants.

Abstract:
Since the turn of the millennium a crop of travel books by Africans or Africans in diaspora describing their travels within Africa have appeared to assert a fresh African self-representation in travel writing. Noo Saro-Wiwa's travel book Looking for Transwonderland (2012) tells the story of British-Nigerian journalist and travel writer Saro-Wiwa's travels around Nigeria for the first time since the death of her father Ken Saro-Wiwa. Looking for Transwonderland describes Saro-Wiwa's journey all over Nigeria, from Lagos to the north via the east and southwest, including a stop in her father's village in Ogoniland. Saro-Wiwa represents herself as a pioneer, one of the first travel writers of western-published, tourist-oriented travel writing about a country which in global tourism terms is “this final frontier that has perhaps received fewer voluntary visitors than outer space” (p.8).

Abstract:
The purpose of my thesis is to explore the hlstory of British travel writing and to consider how the literature of exploration, which initially presented itself as factual, evolved into the fictional use of travel writing. In order to provide a context for travel writing, I will be looking at the work of Porter, Mills, Pratt, Chard, Hulme and Youngs before discussing the Grand Tourist ( 1660-1 837) and the growth of mass touri sm under Thomas Cook. In order to consider early-twentieth-century travel writing in this context of mass touri sm, I propose to engage specifically with Peter Fleming's Brazilian Adventure (1933) and Robert Byron's The Road to Oxiana (1937). Evelyn Waugh, at various times, acted both as a friend and a reviewer to both Byron and Fleming. The thesis will then focus upon Evelyn Waugh's work and look at the differences between his travel writing and the fictional use of travel in his fiction. Waugh's writing style has been important to me in the development of my own.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 92-96).
This thesis spotlights the travel and leisure magazine industry within South Africa. It contends that the travel writing genre is susceptible to a number of biases, both past and present, which ultimately affect the way its overall content is produced and presented to the public. This work was substantiated through a set of qualitative interviews with key professionals within the South African travel and leisure magazine industry, as well as through a theme- based content analysis of a number of local travel writing publications. This study adds to a rather extensive line of research written on the topic of travel writing regarding a number of older criticisms of bias including 'othering', escapism, and gendering. However, it also focuses on a number of more modem biases such as direct advertising, advertorial usage, as well as the acceptance of 'freebies' and barter agreements, none of which has been given much attention in previous research. The sheer existence of these and other biases within the modem South African travel and leisure magazine industry exhibits an absolute necessity of examination into such a topic, especially given the importance and overall influence that the travel writing industry has on a country's economic standing and overall image.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a history of the idea of travel in South Asia as it found expression in Urdu travel writing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Though travel has always been integral to social life in South Asia, it was only during this period that it became an end in itself. The imagined virtues of travel hinged on two emergent beliefs: that travel was a requisite for inner growth, and that travel experience was transferable. Consequently, Urdu travel writers endorsed travel not to reach a particular destination but to engender personal development, social advancement and communal well-being. Authors conveyed the transformative power of travel to their readers through accounts that traced out their inner journeys through narratives of physical travel, an ideal echoed in an old proverb that re-emerged at this time: “travel is the means to victory.” This study, which draws on extensive archival research from four countries, represents the most comprehensive examination of travel writing in any South Asian language. Through a diachronic analysis of a wealth of new primary sources, it indexes shifting valuations of travel as they relate to conceptualizations of the self, the political and the social. It demonstrates that though the idea of beneficial travel found its first expression in accounts commissioned by a colonial government interested in inculcating modern cosmopolitan aesthetics, it quickly developed a life of its own in the public sphere of print. This dynamic literary space was forged by writers from across the social spectrum who produced a profusion of accounts that drew inspiration from Indic, Islamic and European traditions. In the twentieth century, too, travel writing continued to evolve and expand as it adapted to the shifting dimensions of local nationalisms and successive international conflicts. In independent India and Pakistan, it broke new ground both aesthetically and thematically as it came to terms with the post-colonial geography of South Asia. Yet, throughout this history,Urdu travel writing continued to cultivate the idea that the journey was valuable for its own sake.
Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations

Calzati, Stefano. "Mediating travel writing, mediated China : the Middle Kingdom in travel books and blogs." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/13702/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis looks at travel writing about China crossing three main research axes. The main one is represented by the comparison between Western-authored contemporary travel books and travel blogs. The majority of studies on Western travel writing about China focuses on pre-modern and modern texts, while much less attention has been dedicated to contemporary travelogues. At the same time, by projecting the genre onto the web, this study offers a mapping of the blogosphere and questions the literary and epistemological status of travel writing. Through a close reading analysis, the aim is to outline medial and rhetorical differences and similarities between travel books and blogs, particularly in terms of how China is represented, as well as the way in which travel writers perceive themselves. In this latter respect, interviews with travel authors and bloggers are also included. The second research axis explores the diachronic evolution of Western-authored travel books about the Middle Kingdom. Building on the findings of the first part of the thesis, the analysis looks at texts from the end of the 19th century throughout the 20th century, complementing the attention to pre-modern and modern travel accounts of earlier studies on travel writing about China. The goal is to understand if and how the genre and the representation of China have changed over the last century. The third axis is cross-cultural: in the last chapter a number of contemporary Chinese-authored travel accounts are analyzed. Referring to existing literature about Chinese travel writing, to be highlighted are the rhetorical and medial differences between “classic” and contemporary texts, as well as between books and blogs. Concerning the first research axis, findings suggest that Western travel books are more diversified generically speaking than travel blogs. Moreover, while the former provide a rather composite representation of the country, the latter are mainly devoted to deliver objectified touristic information. As for the second research axis, no substantial shifts were detected in the genre’s features, or in the way in which China has been represented in Western travel writing during the 20th century. Lastly, it is advanced that Chinese travel books are deeply politicized, while travel blogs tend to convey a contemplative representation of the country, more in the spirit of “classic” Chinese travel writing. However, differently from Western writers, both Chinese authors and bloggers manage to portray China from a variety of points of view.

Abstract:
Abstract Failures of convection tubes in two of Syncrude’s three hydrogen plants were traced to difficulties in carryover of boiler water into the steam and difficulties associated with controlling manually all the variables in a congruent phosphate pH program. To overcome this unacceptable situation, the introduction and use of a number of on-line analyzers was recommended. This paper examines the technical justification for using each analyzer, the actual engineering design that was required for their installation and the financial returns for carrying out the project. At the time of writing this paper, all the engineering work is complete, but vendor selection and installation are still to be done.

Abstract:
One hundred years after the death and one hundred and forty years after the birth of the famous Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek (1883–1923), his work still attracts the undivided attention and curiosity of readers. His widely known literary work about the immortal soldier Josef Švejk, which has been translated into many languages, has acquired the dimension of omnipresence and timelessness – precisely in the sense that it can be read in any country and at any time. However, the majority of the writer's prose work consists of short stories, adventures and tales, often published first in newspapers and then in book form, often linked by a common theme that they deal with. Many of them preceded the writing of the novel about the good soldier Švejk, and some of them explain Hašek's political thinking and the constant need to question things, make fun of them and take nothing for granted. Hašek's constant involvement in public social life can be traced in the stories collected in anthological collections – Galerie karikatur (1909), Velitelem města Bugulmy (1921), Mírová konference a jiné humoresky (1922), Dobrý voják Švejk před válkou a jiné podivné historky (1922), as well as in the posthumously published anthology – Politické a sociální dějiny strany mírného pokroku v mezích zákona (1963). Our intention in this contribution was to highlight selected parodies and political satire in the short form of a story, with reference to the parallel between Dickens' heroes from The Pickwick Papers and Hašek's satire – Klub českých Pickwicků.

Abstract:
Although the roots of the cyclical form can be traced back centuries ago, it was the 19th century that claimed the cyclical principle as its full manifestation. Closely linked to the concept of genre and its affirmation in certain patterns, the cyclical form was adopted by composers as a working tool to ensure the unity of a multipartite sonic organism by utilizing a common thematic material that can be found in several parts of the genre. This thematically charged entity can circulate at the macro-formal level in variants without major changes or it can be transformed at the melodic, rhythmic, harmonic or timbral level. Generally speaking, it raises the level of musical thinking and writing, demonstrating the composers skill and the complexity of his/her conception. It can also have an effect on the listener by increasing the emotional impact it can provide by reiterating symbolic themes. Beginning with Beethoven and continuing with Liszt, Franck, Berlioz and Tchaikovsky, this compositional technique is concretely applied as a conscious and premeditated act in musical compositions. The twentieth century and composers such as George Enescu extend the acceptance of cyclicity to the level of a principle generative of thematicism by developing an initial theme and metamorphosing it into a resource of rhythmic-melodic material for defining and shaping the other sound characters that fulfill a formal pattern. Thus, the edifice of a thematic entity enunciated in the first part of a work can become an inexhaustible resource and the embryo of several musical individualities, generating the thematicism of the other parts of the whole.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of British women travelers - the forerunners of modern tourism - deserves attention because of the motives of their travels, the directions of their journeys and the permanent mark they left behind, creating the genre of women's travel reportage - women's travel writing. What prompted British women to travel more often than other women? Barbara Hodgson answers this self-asked question as follows. The inhabitants of the United Kingdom of both sexes were eager wanderers and colonizers. Women travelers have left behind descriptions of their journeys in the form of travel reports, which are a source of geographical knowledge about Oceania, among other places and touristic conditions. They are also a testimony to the mentality of 19th century British women. The author uses the historical method and critical reading of this texts of culture.

Abstract:
Passionate about travel, the writers of the Pasoptist era were also tempted to explore the Orient, a sumptuous land full of miracles. In the memorials and travel diaries of Ion Heliade Rădulescu, Dimitrie Bolintineanu, Vasile Alecsandri et. a., the colorful, picturesque and bizarre, of the places visited, the unusual atmosphere of this universe are evoked. Contemplative, the Romanian writers expose in detail the coordinates of the oriental space – a mixture of human entities, of sumptuousness, luxury and misery. All of them still experience the feeling that they have entered a real Babylon. The exotic element is highlighted in geographical, ethnographic, cultural-spiritual descriptions, etc. The journey of the writer-travelers through such lands stimulates not only the initiatory adventure, but also the act of writing.

Sentiment analysis’s objective is to examine public sentiment in a way that will support corporate growth. It emphasizes emotions as well as polarity (positive, negative, and neutral). It makes use of a variety of Natural Language Processing techniques, including Automatic, Hybrid, and Rule based. Users are becoming accustomed to uploading text and photographs on social networks to express their feelings or ideas. As a result, multimodal sentiment analysis has drawn more attention as a research area in recent years. Usually, an image has emotional areas that trigger human emotion, which are typically expressed by corresponding words in comments. Similarly, while writing visual descriptions, people frequently depict the emotive areas of an image. As a result, for multimodal sentiment analysis, the association between picture affective areas and the accompanying text is extremely important. This paper exhibits one of the best CNN representatives You Only Look Once (YOLO), which breaks through the CNN family’s tradition and innovates a completely new way of solving object detection with most simple and highly efficient way. Its name derives from the fact that, unlike earlier object detector algorithms like Faster RCNN, it only requires that an image or video travel once through its network. Its outcomes surpassed the performance of Faster RCNN greatly. The performance of YOLO is compared with faster RCNN in terms of accuracy and F1 Measure.

Abstract:
When you think of the most exciting, controversial, or salacious moments in American history, your first thought probably isn’t the story of a U.S. consul. Consuls were charged by the U.S. State Department with reporting American trade in cities across the world, as well as taking care of Americans abroad, but they had little official diplomatic power. They weren’t negotiating treaties or starting wars; they weren’t leading charges into battle or changing the political landscape. Or were they? The responsibility for the United States’ reputation in other parts of the world often fell squarely on the shoulders of consuls, who were the first ones called in when Americans got themselves in trouble or were mistreated while they were abroad. How they interpreted their duties sometimes got them involved in all kinds of complicated circumstances. And often, their actions on a personal level had ramifications far up the chain, even making a difference in national politics or international relations. The stories of these consuls deserve to be told. Consolation Prize is a narrative-style podcast, hosted by Abby Mullen, who talks to scholars across the historical discipline about consuls and their world. You’ll also hear the voices of these consuls, their colleagues, and their enemies, telling their own stories. In this season, you’ll hear about rhinoceroses, and coffee trading, and hymn writing; you’ll hear about imprisonment, slavery, and oppression. You’ll hear stories of revenge, humiliation, and bitter feuds, but also stories of triumph, joy, and delight. You’ll go places as close to home as Vera Cruz, Mexico, and as far away as Canton and Zanzibar. Please join us as we travel the globe with nineteenth-century consuls! Two season, thirty-two episodes.

Abstract:
Indiana’s House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1190-2021 was implemented in January 2022 to address concerns regarding the overweight (OW) loading behavior of the freight transportation industry and OW permitting. The Act required the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to adopt emergency rules and a fee structure for the interim period. At the start of the interim period (which is still ongoing at the time of this writing), the permit fee was increased from 7 cents/Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL)-mile to 25 cents/ESAL-mile. INDOT commissioned the current study to provide specific information about the effects of the Act on OW permit and revenue trends, infrastructure, and safety. The study results suggest that the Act caused an increase in the number of permits issued and permit revenue; a decline in the average Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and ESALs; but no significant impact on pavement and bridge damage or safety at the permitted routes. The Act helped to close the gap between OW-induced infrastructure consumption and revenues from OW-induced fuel-tax revenue overall. It also closed the gap between OW-induced infrastructure consumption and permitting revenues for non-interstate OW operations. Feedback from freight transportation industry representatives indicated a strong propensity to help protect the infrastructure via axle addition, particularly with incentives. Overall, the Act’s evaluation indicated no significant adverse impact on permit volumes and revenues, and most importantly, on infrastructure and safety. As such, the study results suggest that there is no need for any further adjustments in the OW divisible load permitting fee structure. In addition, efforts to further encourage responsible loading behavior—such as fee discounts or credits to encourage ESAL addition and travel at specific road classes at certain times of the year—could be pursued.

Abstract:
In an international context that has started showing signs of increased instability, the pace of global economic growth seems not to have been significantly affected, at least at the time of writing the present report. Growth forecasts for the global economy for this year are only slightly below those for 2006 (5.2% as against 5.4%). World trade continued to expand faster than GDP growth, while foreign direct investment (FDI) flows made up the ground they lost in 2001-2003, approaching the record values of 2000. Although, toward mid-2007, there was serious disruption in the international financial market, the swift, emphatic reactions of the central banks of the United States and Europe are highly likely to contain the more negative effects of this on the dynamics of the world economy. There was also continuous growth in much of the developing world, particularly China.
