As the new millennium unfolds, the lifestyle of the global travelers have changed. The world is getting smaller, and the traditional physical boundaries that surround us can be easily overcome. Digital data, telephone, and the Internet have created a worldwide network that exchanges information transmitted in milliseconds. More important is the ability for of global inhabitants themselves to travel to various places on the map as the volume of air travel is expected to double in the next 10 years. Development in air travel has remained stagnant for the past 20 years. Passengers are treated as mobile human cargo, endless uncertainties exist, and everyone follows the same rigid process structure. Terminal inefficiency, inadequate runways, security, and social responsibilities are fundamental problems affecting airport designs. Stress, inefficiency, and fatigue are common symptoms from endless flights. Physical dislocation, and psychological impacts further bombard the traveler's state of mind. Based on concepts drawn from architecture, technology, and global business strategies, Travel-net is a hypothetical company that is developed to cater to the frequent travelers. It hopes to re-invent the travel process to give control back to this influx of global travelers. Identity will be reinstated, products will become integrated with architecture, strategic networking will streamline the process of air travel. New typology of terminal architecture, along with altered sequence of events, can appear either as insertions, extensions, or replacements of any port. The airport of the next generation will extend beyond the building and city to provide an alternative global infrastructure, an all-in-one package for the new global travelers.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to elucidate the nature of character perspective in regard to worldbuilding for a setting. My research involved delving into writing journal articles, examining the formatting of stories in how they introduced their settings, and general reading. My main focus was on fictional tales, especially those that used the traveler archetype. Also, I examined how the reader’s view of the given world changes depending on the character whose eyes they are looking at the environment through. In my critical introduction, I address the issues and structure related to use of the traveler archetype in stories. In my own stories, I exemplify these characteristics by showing worlds from different perspectives. I conclude that the traveler archetype works well toward building a setting for the reader to explore due to the perspective it offers, because both the character’s and the reader’s eyes are fresh when making contact with the foreign.

Abstract:
The idea for the vehicle was inspired by an interest in creating a tranportation possiblity with an advanced design. The author had the fortunate opportunity to carry out an exam project at the automobile company Changan whose design department is in Turin, Italy. Changan produces almost exclusively passenger vehicles for the Asian market. The Asian auto user has shown a great interest in premium and personalised luxury qualities and at the same time demands unique safety aspects. As a result the author was inspired to design a vehicle which combined both aspects in a unique passenger vehicle for the future. Because of the masstransit situation in mega-cities the author felt inspired to test a new highway infrastructure possiblity in the conception of the vehicle design, the tunnel system. Classical hand drawings together with digital ideation drawing and 3D software models were the tools implemented for the design process. The work process was not linear starting with hand drawings and ending in complex computer models but took on a laborious path doubling back on and reworking all the different creative routes in a method which culminated in an end product. The end result is the Traveler, a shared auto service for two for 2050, a unique expansion on Changan´s historical production of passenger vehicles. The automoble is conceived as a two-compartment passenger transport option. Its size allows for different rider experiences: work, relaxation and entertainment while on the go. Because the passenger is in her/his own „room" there is a guaranty for complete privacy and ultimate safety from outside influence.

Roell, Maria. "The use of public participation in the design of effective internet-based advanced traveler information systems." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/45954.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines three methods of public participation and their potential application to the design of internet-based Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATISs). ATISs have the ability to reduce congestion by providing their users with real-time traffic information that can affect their travel decisions to avoid areas of high traffic. This study first uses a website evaluation method to determine a baseline of ATIS website quality. It then uses three forms of public participation, a survey, a future's workshop, and a feedback website to determine user preferences for Georgia's traveler information website, NaviGAtor. The results of the participation are then analyzed for their strengths and weaknesses and their applicability to ATIS development. The study concludes that the feedback website is the most applicable form of participation for ATIS design, followed by surveys that should be used periodically, and future's workshops that should be used rarely.

Allen, Koya C. "Cultural embeddedness and the international traveler| Influences on travel behavior for the prevention of imported Dengue." Thesis, Kent State University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3618937.

Full text
Abstract:

Background: Dengue prevention for U.S. travelers focuses on compliance with mosquito avoidance practices (MAP) and passive surveillance. Understanding determinants of MAP among high-risk travelers can improve Dengue prevention strategies. In travel medicine, a risk assessment framework of social determinants of health and travel purpose of visiting friends and relatives (VFR) determines risk of travel-associated diseases. This risk assessment framework is subject to bias and inaccuracy because it fails to account for factors of influence on travel behaviors from a social-ecological perspective. A mixed methods approach identified and characterized determinants of MAP in U.S. West-Indian American VFR travelers. Two pilot studies revealed travelers' decision-making processes for MAP and outlined determinants of intended MAP through a qualitative interview and cross-sectional survey. Survey analyses included an exploratory factor analysis, Chi-squared/ Fisher's exact test, logistic regression and qualitative coding for development of an `Intended MAP International Travel Behavior' (IMAP-ITB) model.

Methods: To expand the IMAP-ITB model and describe factors of influence on actual MAP, 2 subsequent qualitative studies were conducted. A multi-case ethnographic study of travel cohorts to Trinidad, Brazil and Thailand identified social/physical environmental influences on actual MAP in a cross-case content analysis of field observations data. An interpretive phenomenological analysis of semi-structured interviews yielded similarities and differences in MAP by revealing the meaning of `going home' in VFR travelers versus another travel destination.

Results: A 'Cultural Embeddedness and MAP' model extends the IMAP-ITB, using a social-ecological perspective, including factors of influence on intended and actual MAP. MAP during international travel was associated with travel logistics, social interactions, risk perceptions and cues to action. The concept of 'Cultural Embeddedness' may explain compliance behaviors with MAP, irrespective of VFR status.

Discussion: Prevention strategies at each level of influence within a social-ecological framework would address Dengue emergence because individual level prevention using MAP is capricious by individual, type of travel and social/physical environmental influences. Findings demonstrate that VFR terminology does not accurately depict high-risk travelers. Next steps should include more research on the concept of 'Cultural Embeddedness ' and CEMAP. Furthermore, improvements to current Dengue surveillance are needed to prevent to prevent and monitor imported Dengue.

Abstract:
Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) have been employed over the past two decades to provide travelers with real-time traffic information; one example estimated downstream travel times. Portable ATIS, in the context of this study, can provide real-time traffic information-including advanced travel times, delay times, and reduced average speeds-to motorists by updating portable changeable message signs in rural settings. Currently, there are limited numbers of demonstrations of the capabilities of portable ATIS. This paper summarizes the results of a portable ATIS demonstration project in Redding, California. For the demonstration, four different portable ATISs were deployed on a construction project for a two-week period. These systems included Blufax, iCone, License Plate Reader (LPR) and Adaptir. Three aspects were tested: accuracy, reliability, and usability. Accuracy was evaluated by comparing measured travel times and speeds with a stopwatch measured baseline. Reliability was assessed by monitoring and summarizing the maintenance needs during the demonstration. System usability was addressed in terms of ease of setup and calibration. Overall, the systems accurately estimated travel times within 10 seconds 98 percent of the time for the LPR system and 100 percent of the time for the Blufax, and speeds were within 10 mph 99 percent of the time for the iCone and Adaptir systems. Each of the systems had their own unique challenges with reliability and usability. The results of this study show the promise of using portable systems to measure and display real-time travel times and highlight the challenges that need to be addressed for successful implementation. The study plan for follow up studies summarize the implementation of a future research study that will focus on remedying the downfalls found from the original demonstration project as well as focus on a human factors related experiment measuring vehicle headways with different changeable message sign sequences. These study plans were not implemented but are provided to guide future research work.

Full text
Abstract:
This memoir is a collection of attempts to search for a personal anchorage or home. It is a decidedly female journey for a woman's place in the world. The manuscript details the quest of a female journalist for a sense of wholeness following a childhood with a mentally ill mother. It consists of three parts: the first, an account of childhood; the second, a narrative of a search "on the road" during a journalism career; and, third, an interior quest for a life context that included faith. The journey wound through Latin America, the Caribbean, and Southwest Asia. What is "home"? Is it family? God? A sense of safety? For me, the need to know emerged in childhood. It included a spiritual quest for a higher power that eluded me as a shadow fled the sun. In adulthood, travels for my work pushed the question as I saw how others answered these questions. The search took me to Taos, New Mexico, where I sought a vision of my death, to Bangladesh, where I learned first hand about women's suppression, and to Lima, Peru, where I believed death by terrorist to be imminent. My quest carried me further into the practice of Buddhism. It became a search for a greater "presence" I was unable to define. It continued through the death of my Alzheimer's iv afflicted mother. The journey, though full of adventure, held answers that often seemed beyond my grasp. Or so I thought. Ultimately, the search turned out to be an inside job.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to develop valid methodologies for addressing several limitations of the current Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) evaluation tools. This study was focused mainly on three enhancements. First, the queue propagation algorithm of the selected tool (DYNASMART-P) was modified to more realistically model traffic congestion. The author proposed the addition of transfer flow capacity and backward gated flow constraints for more accurately calculating transfer flow rate. Second, the study modeled the natural diversion behaviors of drivers who do not receive traveler information. Lastly, statistical models of user responses to traveler information were developed using binary and multinomial logit methods to understand and model the relationship between driversâ socio-economic characteristics and their responses to traveler information. Among these three enhancements, the first two (improved queue propagation and natural diversion behavior algorithms) were implemented in the enhanced model. The user behavior models, however, were not implemented because their predictive power was not acceptable due to limitations in the data set. The enhanced model was applied to two case studies: 1) verifying the capabilities of the model under a recurring bottleneck scenario on I-40 corridor in the Triangle region of North Carolina, and 2) demonstrating the capability of the enhanced model to measure the effectiveness of U-Transportation (similar to the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration [VII] program in the USA) which has been under development in Korea. The first case study results showed that the improved queue propagation algorithm simulated the bottleneck queue much closer to the real data than the original model. The simulation results also indicated that the actual diversion rate under recurring congestion in the study network was very low. The results of the second case study demonstrated that the enhanced model can evaluate the network impact of new advanced technology in flooding situations and can evaluate the effect of market penetration of the communication technology.

Drivers using information from an Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) could potentially make better travel decisions to reduce travel time and increase trip reliability, thereby benefiting both guided drivers as well as those without such access. However, market penetration of ATIS can have dramatic effects on the performance of the transportation system in terms of overall benefits conferred as well as the distributional effects between guided and unguided drivers. Because market penetration will be determined both by private market structure and public policies, the effective deployment of ATIS depends critically on the private and public organizations that will provide these services. An understanding of the relationship between transportation system performance and ATIS market penetration provides important insights into a sustaining market structure for the ATIS industry. This thesis provides an empirical study of the impact of ATIS on transportation network quality of service using an application of DynaMIT (Dynamic network assignment for the Management of Information to Travelers). An analysis of the simulation results serves to inform the public and private stakeholder positions in the creation of a better market for ATIS. The main results are that the provision of dynamic route guidance can simultaneously benefit the individual performance of drivers, both guided and unguided, as well as the system performance of existing transportation infrastructure. In order to perform this analysis, it was necessary to develop a new software framework for the real- time integration of DynaMIT and a Traffic Management Center (TMC).

Iqbal, Md Shahadat. "Data Support of Advanced Traveler Information System Considering Connected Vehicle Technology." FIU Digital Commons, 2017. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3495.

Full text
Abstract:
Traveler information systems play a significant role in most travelers’ daily trips. These systems assist travelers in choosing the best routes to reach their destinations and possibly select suitable departure times and modes for their trips. Connected Vehicle (CV) technologies are now in the pilot program stage. Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications will be an important source of data for traffic agencies. If this data is processed properly, then agencies will be able to better determine traffic conditions, allowing them to take proper countermeasures to remedy transportation system problems under different conditions. This research focuses on developing methods to assess the potential of utilizing CV data to support the traveler information system data collection process. The results from the assessment can be used to establish a timeline indicating when an agency can stop investing, at least partially, in traditional technologies, and instead rely on CV technologies for traveler information system support. This research utilizes real-world vehicle trajectory data collected under the Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) program and simulation modeling to emulate the use of connected vehicle data to support the traveler information system. NGSIM datasets collected from an arterial segment and a freeway segment are used in this research. Microscopic simulation modeling is also used to generate required trajectory data, allowing further analysis, which is not possible using NGSIM data. The first step is to predict the market penetration of connected vehicles in future years. This estimated market penetration is then used for the evaluation of the effectiveness of CV-based data for travel time and volume estimation, which are two important inputs for the traveler information system. The travel times are estimated at different market penetrations of CV. The quality of the estimation is assessed by investigating the accuracy and reliability with different CV deployment scenarios. The quality of volume estimates is also assessed using the same data with different future scenarios of CV deployment and partial or no detector data. Such assessment supports the identification of a timeline indicating when CV data can be used to support the traveler information system.

Doshi, Siddharth. "Designing a multi-modal traveler information platform for urban transportation." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/37167.

Full text
Abstract:
Urban transportation networks are inefficient due to sub-optimal use by travelers. One approach to counter the increase in urban transportation demand is to provide better information to travelers, which would allow them to make better use of the network. Existing traveler information systems do this to a certain extent, but are limited by the data available and the scope of their implementation. These systems are vertically integrated and closed so that using any external elements for analysis, user interfacing etc. is difficult. The effects of such traveler information systems are reviewed via a comparative analysis of case studies available in the literature. It is found that information availability has a definite positive effect, but the social and environmental benefits are difficult to quantify. It is also seen that combining data by integrating systems can lead to additional uses for the same data and result on better quality of service and information. In this thesis, a regional platform for multi-modal traveler information is proposed that would support the development of traveler information systems. The architecture incorporates a central processing and storage module, which acts as an information clearinghouse and supports receiving, managing and sending data to and from multiple sources and interfaces. This setup allows sharing of data for analysis or application development, but with access control. The components are loosely coupled to minimize inter-dependencies. Due to this, the source, analysis, user interface and storage components can be developed independently of each other. To better develop the requirements and understand the challenges of the proposed concept, a limited implementation of the system is designed for the midtown Atlanta region, incorporating multiple data sources and user interfaces. The individual elements of the system are described in detail as is the testing and evaluation of the system.

Gamble, Alexander William. "Between tourist and traveler exploring the threshold between fast and slow /." Thesis, Montana State University, 2010. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2010/gamble/GambleA0510.pdf.

Abstract:
Speed in relation to traveling leads to the loss of a direct engagement with the physical environment. Tourists travel as quickly as possible to see as much as they can, and after arriving at a station or airport they will leave the terminal in the travel mindset and still be focused on efficiency and speed, preventing them from connecting with the character of their destination on a deeper level. It is my goal to create a transition space for travelers that mediates between the intimate character of place and the ubiquitous nature of high speed travel. By designing for a traveler's inertia I believe that architecture has the potential to better transition people between speed space and the experiential realm. Slowing down the tourist can allow for more meaningful experiences of place and let the traveler engage more deeply with one's physical environment.

This dissertation examines the psychological factors that influence travel behavior such as people's personality traits, environmental attitudes, car pride and perceptions of convenience and comfort. Despite the recognition of the importance of these psychological factors in better understanding travel behavior, transportation agencies have failed to integrate them into planning practice and policy debate in the quantitative way. This dissertation reflects on this failure, identifies the barriers that have contributed to it, and reviews innovations in travel behavior research which may help overcome these barriers. This dissertation proposes a structure for analyzing traveler preferences that incorporates these psychological factors into travel behavior analysis. A set of eight factors are presented as the latent elements of travel preferences to illustrate the structure, including two personality traits; three environmental attitude factors and car pride; and two perceptual factors of convenience and comfort. A MIMIC model quantifies the eight factors and examines the relationships among these factors as well as between them and socioeconomic variables. Despite the significant correlations with socioeconomic variables, personality, attitudes and perceptions prove to be characteristics of individuals that are distinct from the socioeconomics. The dissertation presents three applications that incorporate these latent factors into travel demand analysis of three critical aspects of travel behavior: car use, mode choice and car ownership. Incorporating the latent variables significantly improves the overall exploratory power of the transportation models.
(cont.) The results suggest that plausible changes in traveler preferences can have an effect on behavior in magnitude similar to the impacts that result from rising household income or increased population density. Unobserved heterogeneities exist not only for preferences with respect to observed variables such as travel time, but also for latent factors such as car pride and perception of convenience. Preference Accommodating and Preference Shaping in Transportation Planning 3 Mutual dependencies between travel preferences and behavior are identified and the direction and strength of the causal connections are modeled explicitly. Depending on the specific latent factors and aspect of travel behavior, the causal relationships could be from preferences to behavior, from behavior to preferences, or be significant in both directions concurrently These three applications also demonstrate in terms of methodology that 1) hierarchical relationships among latent factors can be simultaneously estimated with discrete choice models; 2) latent variable and latent class modeling techniques can be combined to test unobserved heterogeneities in travelers' sensitivity to latent variables; 3) causal relationships between behavior and preferences can be examined in the SEM or hybrid SEM and discrete choice model. This dissertation proposes two complementary perspectives to examine how to embed traveler preferences in the planning practice: planning as preference accommodating and planning as preference shaping.
(cont.) Combining both perspectives, this dissertation argues that by ignoring the importance of traveler preferences, not only may we make serious mistakes in the planning, modeling and appraisal processes, but we may also fail to recognize significant opportunities to mitigate or solve transportation problems by influencing and exploiting changes in people's preferences.

Abstract:
The physical attributes of the service setting are critical differentiators among service providers that significantly influence customers' emotional responses. Following the changes in the airport industry and addressing the gap in the existing research, this study aims to investigate the relationship between physical servicescape elements, emotional responses of enjoyment and anxiety and word-of-mouth in the context of airport environment. This study was conducted in three phases. The first phase incorporated an EFA conducted on a pilot study sample of 174 respondents that proposed a six-factor structure of airport service environment. In the second phase of the study, a self-administered online questionnaire was sent to an online marketing agency, resulting in 311 valid responses. This phase included a CFA that confirmed the validity of the instrument proposed in the pilot study, recommending the following six airport servicescape factors: design, scent, functional organization, air/lighting conditions, seating and cleanliness. Finally, an SEM testing suggested that airport design features and pleasant scent have a positive influence on traveler enjoyment, further generating positive WOM. Nevertheless, poor functional organization and inadequate air and lighting conditions are major predictors of traveler anxiety that leads to negative recommendations. According to the findings, this study offers several implications for the airport practitioners and developers. Based on the service environment frameworks established in the previous research, this study developed a valid instrument for examining travelers' perceptions of the airport environment. As a result, emphasizing hedonic attributes of the airport environment such as aroma, colors and d[eacute]cor would enhance traveler enjoyment and experience. In addition, airport practitioners are advised to provide successful wayfinding through the facility, appropriate luminosity, air conditioning, and temperature that would reduce travelers' stress and anxiety during their stay. Finally, design was showed to be the most influential environmental stimuli, justifying the need for of airport modernization and renovations.

Abstract:
One of the objectives of the U.S. government is to balance the individual’s right to privacy and national security interests. Trusted Traveler programs create a risk-based security model where the traveling public is categorized into low or high risk. There are, however, some privacy concerns related to the acceptance of the use of biometric technology in the adoption of expedited security screening procedures in commercial airports. The theoretical construct of this case study of the TSA Pre-Check Program is based on Ajzen and Fischbein’s theory of reasoned action, specifically through Davis’ technology acceptance model. The purpose of this case study was to explore the perceptions of the traveling public regarding the protection of privacy and the use of biometric technologies. Data for this study included 325 social media postings, 50 privacy complaints reported to the Department of Homeland Security between 2009 and 2014, and publicly available data from the Government Accountability Office about expedited screening for the years 2011 – 2014. Data were coded into a priori themes and then subjected to a content analysis procedure. Findings indicate that the traveling public generally support expedited security screening and consent to waiving certain privacy rights in order to facilitate expedited screening. Complaints from travelers were also primarily related to wait times and secondary screening, and not privacy concerns. The positive social change implications stemming from this study include recommendations to the TSA to expand the Trusted Traveler programs such that the primary concern of the traveling public, reduction of wait time is balanced against privacy concerns about the collection of biometric data as part of a measured response to aviation security.

These images define what we should experience when we are in such destinations and at the same time affirm any other forms of experience which is not recognized in these matrixes of images are not welcome. This means for example the meaning of safety and comfort in a travel is only achieved by the way that  has been already constructed in media through series of campaigns of a special tourism agency. One can say this mechanism forces us to accept that there is no other ways of having comfortable travel without going by airplanes and tourist packages without accommodating in hotels, without going to designated touristic areas in destination and so on and so forth. Here I draw on other alternative ways of doing travel like Slow tourism as a way of breaking such image making system in media as well as a way of experiencing what seems to be un-experience-able. For this I conducted a series of interviews with an experienced slow traveler who cycled several times between various countries. This essay is a qualitative/analytical text based on experiences of one slow traveler and critical reviews of  literature provided in this area.

Abstract:
Aeronautical revenue from landing and handling charges to carriers is falling significantly below 60% of total revenue and will not persist as the main source of income for airports. Airports in Europe cannot continue to rely on profits from airlines; operating companies need to improve the competitiveness through commercial income from different traveler types. The purpose of this multiple case study was to understand the elements of successful sales strategies by concessionaires (retailers) at the metropolitan airport system of Zurich and Basel in hopes of improving the nonaeronautical revenue from leisure travelers, a price-sensitive customer segment. The conceptual framework was corporate strategic planning with the underlying concept of sustainable business operations. Semistructured interviews included 9 executives and senior managers of concessions and retail operations at Zurich International and Basel EuroAirport, and covered major themes such as managing the shopping experience of passengers as well as collaboration between concessionaires, airports, and airlines. The key findings, which emerged from an inductive analysis of the data, were that the identification of personalized offerings and the inclusion of individual travelers' needs are required to ensure a flexible approach by each airport and shop location throughout the terminal. The collected data contained indicators for holistic and targeted concepts by retail concessions in cooperation with airport stakeholders. Social implications include sustainable retail strategies by promoting value adding products and services, improving the passenger's travel experience, and ensuring the profitability of concessionaires in a changing aviation market.

Abstract:

Abstract “Natural Traveler” is a part of my life, which is a living diary recorded how to deal with the flower, grass, insect, bird, and the earth in the nature, and a sort of artistic perception obtained after contemplated the nature. “Journey” is not to touch the earth like the butterfly randomly dotted on the surface of water, but a kind of roam---passing through the spirit and conception, and facing the nature. The basis to piece through the natural art creation is established on the botany, biology, and ecology accumulated all the year round, and on the foundation of the gardening and landscape. Your own nature shall be responded with a natural model from the oudside of nature-journey to the inside of nature-mode---beneficences, tolerations, doctrine of noninterference, and simplicity. The perception, after the journey and the enlightenment to the nature of the early, makes you sigh for how broad is the heaven? How profound is the sea? Thus, I often said, “Water is broad, and sky, wider; but heart---the widest”. The implication of the “Natural Traveler” is to accommodate the natural early with a broad mind of the innocent hear, doing no interference in the ecological environment. Again, let us review the creative conception and method from the concept of “Journey” and by the process of play, tour, and enlightenment to enter the individual and internal world of nature. As a contemporarily artistic worker, you should be honestly facing yourself and your own life prior to name yourself being living, or to identify a genuine creation. “Nature” is so abstract as well as vast---how to catch it, to orient it, or to demonstrate against… with meditation, I integrate the “Nature” with the “Inward Nature” into one, just like to combine the Jazz piano with the vocal to form the flawless and perfection, so as an ultimate humble in belief. Face to the nature just like a poem, or an unknown but a touching melody. In other words, the nature is the “Music”; a “Belief”, or an “Innocent Heart”. The art is based on the nature to evolve and surpass the nature. The process to access the nature is where the artistically creative spirits of the “Natural Traveler” is.

While many people long for self-help trip, surprisingly during their trips this kind of travelers actually had to endure many unknown hassles to most people. Previously, academic researchers paid high regards primarily to the travel motivation, their knowledge of traveling, or certain gender issues but rarely mentioned the hassles they faced truly happened during their trips. Accordingly, this Thesis aimed to contextualize the hassles by means of qualitative methodologies to study the problems they faced during their independent traveling. This thesis used in-depth interviews and arranged nine independent travelers as research participants. The standards for subjects included: (1) participants of both genders; (2) with ages between twenty-one and thirty, ages between thirty-one and forty, and ages above forty-one; (3) who have had independent traveling experience between one to three times, between four to six times, between seven to nine times, and those more than ten times; and (4) the destination of those experience shall cover five major continents. For analyzing the interview data, content analysis was adopted to review the transcripts of the interviews and then to hypothesize three periods including pre-traveling, on-traveling and post-traveling in order to categorize ten types of hassles in total. The hassles in the pre-traveling period included handling various trivial tasks, arranging complicated tasks of planning itinerary, and also the over-enthusiastic friends or family members. In the on-traveling period, there were problems such as unexpected accidents, any lacks of knowledge or capacities to deal with the problems, a hard-going companion, disappointment due to some presupposed expectation, and luggage management. As to the post-traveling, how and what to share about the traveling experiences and the adjustment problems after return to the home country were the common hassles. Finally, for the reference of future researchers, this Thesis propose a few suggestions regarding some implication on traveling management.

"A Network-Sensitive Integrated Travel Model for Simulating Impacts of Real-Time Traveler Information." Doctoral diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.27480.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Real-time information systems are being used widely around the world to mitigate the adverse impacts of congestion and events that contribute to network delay. It is important that transportation modeling tools be able to accurately model the impacts of real-time information provision. Such planning tools allow the simulation of the impacts of various real-time information systems, and the design of traveler information systems that can minimize impacts of congestion and network disruptions. Such modeling tools would also be helpful in planning emergency response services as well as evacuation scenarios in the event of a natural disaster. Transportation modeling tools currently in use are quite limited in their ability to model the impacts of real-time information provision on travel demand and route choices. This dissertation research focuses on enhancing a previously developed integrated transportation modeling system dubbed SimTRAVEL (Simulator of Transport, Routes, Activities, Vehicles, Emissions, and Land) to incorporate capabilities that allow the simulation of the impacts of real-time traveler information systems on activity-travel demand. The first enhancement made to the SimTRAVEL framework involves the ability to reflect the effects of providing information on prevailing (as opposed to historical) network conditions on activity-travel behavior choices. In addition, the model system is enhanced to accommodate multiple user information classes (pre-trip and enroute) simultaneously. The second major contribution involves advancing the methodological framework to model enroute decision making processes where a traveler may alter his or her travel choices (such as destination choice) while enroute to an intended destination. Travelers who are provided up-to-date network information may choose to alter their destination in response to congested conditions, or completely abandon and reschedule an activity that offers some degree of flexibility. In this dissertation research, the model framework is developed and an illustrative demonstration of the capabilities of the enhanced model system is provided using a subregion of the Greater Phoenix metropolitan area in Arizona. The results show that the model is able to simulate adjustments in travel choices that may result from the introduction of real-time traveler information. The efficacy of the integrated travel model system is also demonstrated through the application of the enhanced model system to evaluate transportation policy scenarios.

In recent ten years, it is very popular that more and more Taiwanese people travel to Japan and the relevant researches have also appeared successively. Based on the tourist’s personality trait, this research explored the relationship between tourist’s five personality traits and tourism preference in Japan, which would be used as the reference of future development direction of the tourist industry. With the tourists ever independently traveling to Japan as the subjects, this research used the relationship between personality trait and tourism preference as the empirical theme. According to the empirical results, Kanto /central part (such as Tokyo and Nagoya) and Kinki /China (such as Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima) are the traveling areas the Taiwanese people choose in the first priority as well as the projects where the operators in catering and shopping industry are willing to invest. The largest tourism dilemma lies in language and holiday problem. The safety and medical problems generally believed by the public are relatively unimportant in Japan’s independent travel cases. In multiple regression analysis, personality traits including openness, preciseness, extroversion, friendliness and nervousness all exert the different effects on the various independent traveling preference types, including type of scenic spots, type of vocation enjoying, type of food and shopping, type of outdoor adventure and type of deep intellectuality. The result shows that both the tourist’s personality traits and tourism preference have a significant effect on tour design and consumption pattern. The research conclusion has provided the information related to tourism preference to the tourists having the intention of traveling to Japan independently and provided the business reference to the relevant tourism working personnel.

Cammarano, Cristina. "The Philosophically Educated Teacher as a Traveler." Thesis, 2012. https://doi.org/10.7916/D85B08JH.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation investigates teachers' thinking within that "oscillating place of difference" that is the classroom. I propose that teachers think and see differently in the classroom because they have practiced, like travelers, the dynamic thinking which makes them open to novelty, attentive to difference, reflective wayfarers on the paths of the world. I offer a threefold articulation of teaching into thinking, traveling and philosophizing . My guiding figure is that of teacher as traveler. I focus on the teacher's way of seeing the familiar and the unfamiliar in the classroom. Reliance on teaching routines is considered as a sign of the need for the teacher to feel at home in the classroom, and as a response to the inherent uncertainty of the educational experience. Dewey's conception of reflective thinking is put at work to explain teachers thinking in the classroom: reflection is a twofold movement of the mind that at first focuses on the given particular of the experience, and that also expands and opens up the given to new possible interpretations. The third chapter proposes to historicize the metaphor of teacher as traveler by considering Graeco-Roman thinking about travel and movement in relation to knowledge and wisdom. I consider the thesis that traveling is conducive to learning and wisdom. Herodotus explicitly connects travel to knowledge. The presence of itinerant teachers in Ancient Greece seems to reinforce this connection, as does the mythological representation of the ideal teacher as the centaur Chiron. I then posit an antithetical idea: that traveling be counterproductive because in travel the person is exposed to distraction, loss of focus, fragmentation. This antithesis is endorsed by Seneca's Epistles to Lucilius. The dissertation moves to a re-examination of the figure of teacher as traveler in relation to the idea of home. The traveler reaches out and explores novelty and alterity in a meaning-making relation to where she is from. Similarly, the teacher thinks in the classroom by being attentive to newness and difference while keeping in mind the home or familiar: her routines, her curriculum, her tradition Montaigne's humanistic philosophizing is considered in its constitutive dynamism. The way to the knowledge of home-- and the wisdom deriving from it-- passes through the encounter with the Other, be it the indigenous inhabitant of the new world, or the neighboring country, or a different language. Like a traveler, a teacher retains her freedom to move and to chose the direction to her steps, and carries the necessary provisions and supplies: enough to get around, but not too many to weigh her down. The teacher as traveler can read the world of experience, can read her discipline, and can read her students by paying attention and knowing their pace. The encounters that are at the heart of the educational experience, between teachers, students, works and things of the world, all concur to exercise the mind of a traveler: a mind that finds itself " at home" in the world.

Full text
Abstract:
Trip planning is a well cited problem for which various solutions have been reported in the literature. This problem has been typically addressed, to a large extent, as a shortest distance path planning problem. In some scenarios, the concept of shortest path is extended to reflect temporal objectives and/or constraints. This work takes an alternative perspective to the trip planning problem in the sense it being situation aware. Thus, allowing multitudes of traveler centric objectives and constraints, as well as aspects of the environment as they pertain to the trip and the traveler. The work in this thesis introduces TSADA (Traveler Situation Awareness and Decision Aid) system. TSADA is designed as a modular system that combines linguistic situation assessment with user-centric decision-making. The trip planning problem is modeled as a graph G. The objective is to find a route with the minimum cost. Both hard and soft objective/attributes are incorporated. Soft objective/attributes such as safety, speed and driving comfortability are described using a linguistic framework and processed using hierarchical fuzzy inference engine. A user centric situation assessment is used to compute feasible routes and map them into route recommendation scheme: recommended, marginally recommended, and not recommended. In this work, we introduce traveler's doctrines concept. This concept is proposed to make the process of situation assessment user centric by being driven by the doctrine that synthesizes the user's specific demands. Hard attributes/objectives, such as the time window and trip monitory allowances, are included in the process of determining the final decision about the trip. We present the underline mathematical formulation for this system and explain the working of the proposed system to achieve optimal performance. Results are introduced to show how the system performs under a wide range of scenarios. The thesis is concluded with a discussion on findings and recommendations for future work.

This research proposes a distributed Geographic Information System in Transportation (GIS-T) framework to be used as the resource for a World Wide Web (WWW) Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS). ATIS, one of the major domains of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), can employ visual and auditory presentations to aid tripmakers in planning their travel. However, in an ATIS, traffic related data and information might be organized and maintained by several authorities, thus how to provide data sharing among different computer systems, is critical to the success of ATIS. Due to the advance of network and communication techniques, a WWW-based interface is adopted in travel information systems. Users can access the system via WWW, select appropriate input parameters, and then obtain the query results from the WWW browser. Furthermore, the distributed GIS-T framework is constructed to integrate different data sets from a variety of sources. The framework utilizes the concept of distributed systems and capabilities of CORBA(Common Object Request Broker Architecture) to design objects and dynamically updated travel-related information in order to provide tripmakers with up-to-date information.
