Abstract:
This thesis proposes that architecture has the potential to organize experience through its sensory effects and that the body is the fundamental link between experience and the imagination. The project in this thesis is a traveling theater. It was inspired by an interest in the intersection between architecture and contemporary theater. The theater borrows elements from traditional theaters and street theater in an effort to establish a separation between actor and spectator while also encouraging exploration of that basic theatrical relationship. There were three fundamental moves in the theater: the cubic volume; the siting and decision to travel; and the separation of the structure and skin. Each of these was a starting point for sensory effects explored in the theater.
Master of Architecture

Abstract:
In this work we present some of the general theory of shock waves and their stability properties. We examine the concepts of nonlinear stability and spectral stability, noting that for certain classes of equations the study of nonlinear stability is reduced to the analysis of the spectra of the linearized eigenvalue problem. A useful tool in the study of spectral stability is the Evans function, an analytic function whose zeros correspond to the eigenvalues of the linearized eigenvalue problem. We discuss techniques for numerical Evans function computation that ensure analyticity, allowing standard winding number arguments and rootfinding methods to be used to locate eigenvalues. The Evans function is then used to study the spectra of the high Lewis number combustion system, tracking eigenvalues in the right-half plane.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mathematics, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 153-155).
In the Traveling Salesman Path Problem, we are given a set of cities, traveling costs between city pairs and fixed source and destination cities. The objective is to find a minimum cost path from the source to destination visiting all cities exactly once. The problem is a generalization of the Traveling Salesman Problem with many important applications. In this thesis, we study polyhedral and combinatorial properties of a variant we call the Traveling Salesman Walk Problem, in which the minimum cost walk from the source to destination visits all cities at least once. Using the approach of linear programming, we study properties of the polyhedron corresponding to a linear programming relaxation of the traveling salesman walk problem. Our results relate the structure of the underlying graph of the problem instance with polyhedral properties of the corresponding fractional walk polyhedron. We first characterize traveling salesman walk perfect graphs, graphs for which the convex hull of incidence vectors of traveling salesman walks can be described by linear inequalities. We show these graphs have a description by way of forbidden minors and also characterize them constructively.
(cont.) We extend these results to relate the underlying graph structure to the integrality gap of the corresponding fractional walk polyhedron. We present several graph operations which preserve integrality gap; these operations allow us to find the integrality gap of graphs built from smaller bricks, whose integrality gaps can be found by computational or other methods.
by Fumei Lam.
Ph.D.

Mattsson, Per. "The Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Matematiska institutionen, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-132624.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a survey on the approximability of the asymmetric traveling salesmanproblem with triangle inequality (ATSP).In the ATSP we are given a set of cities and a function that gives the cost of travelingbetween any pair of cities. The cost function must satisfy the triangle inequality, i.e.the cost of traveling from city A to city B cannot be larger than the cost of travelingfrom A to some other city C and then to B. However, we allow the cost function tobe asymmetric, i.e. the cost of traveling from city A to city B may not equal the costof traveling from B to A. The problem is then to find the cheapest tour that visit eachcity exactly once. This problem is NP-hard, and thus we are mainly interested in approximationalgorithms. We study the repeated cycle cover heuristic by Frieze et al. We alsostudy the Held-Karp heuristic, including the recent result by Asadpour et al. that givesa new upper bound on the integrality gap. Finally we present the result ofPapadimitriou and Vempala which shows that it is NP-hard to approximate the ATSP with a ratio better than 117/116.

Response prediction techniques which accurately estimate the strain due to VIV are of help in deciding how to mitigate VIV, and also to predict the life of the structure. Experiments conducted in the Gulf Stream provided data about the way long flexible cylinders respond at high mode numbers. The data from these experiments showed that the response of long flexible cylinders is often in the form of traveling waves. Therefore, it was necessary to develop an excitation force model which has traveling wave characteristics. This idea has been implemented earlier using a Green's function approach. This work presents the idea of using mode superposition along with an excitation force model which has traveling wave characteristics. Examples of the implementation of this method are shown. Also, examples where a combination of standing and traveling wave excitation models are used is shown, and these agree well with the experimental data.
by Aditi Sheshadri.
S.M.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Nurses act on ethical and moral values to be able to give their patient ethical care. The foundation of the ethical care that nurses provide is based on their empathic and sympathetic abilities. The ethical ability can negatively be affected by stress. The definition of stress is a wide concept with different meanings. One specific type of stress that nurses encounters is the moral distress which is hard to explain and difficult to handle. The moral distress emerges when nurses are unable to act according to their moral judgment. Moral distress is emotional challenging and may affect patient care. Aim: To illustrate nurses’ experiences of moral distress. Method: The study is a literature review containing ten articles of qualitative design. The articles were analyzed according to Friberg’s method. In which results relevant to the aim were categorized and subsequently referred to themes and sub-themes. Results: The analysis resulted in four major themes: Experienced emotions of moral distress, Situations where feelings of moral distress is experienced, Encounters that’s makes nurses vulnerable and Handle the emotions of moral distress. The latter major theme included two sub-themes: The importance of dialog and Personal abilities and experiences. Discussion: The results of the literature review have been discussed in relation to Travelbees nursing theory and perception of the nurse and other relevant studies. The importance of mutual ethical guide lines between nurses and doctors is discussed and the need of ethical guidance and support in difficult care situations. The meaning of dialog and communication to make moral distress manageable for nurses is discussed.

Abstract:
The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is defined as: given a finite number of cities along with the cost of travel between each pair of them, find the cheapest way of visiting all the cities only once and returning to your starting city. Some variants of TSP are proposed to visit cities depending on the profit gained when the visit occurs. In literature, these kind of problems are named TSP with profit. In TSP with profit, there are two conflicting objectives, one to collect profit and the other to decrease traveling cost. In literature, TSP with profit are addressed as single objective, either two objectives are combined linearly or one objective is constrained with a specified bound. In this study, a multiobjective approach is developed by combining &amp
#949
-constrained method and heuristics from the literature in order to find the efficient frontier for the TSP with profit. The performance of approach is tested on the problems studied in the literature. Also an interactive software is developed based on the multiobjective approach.

Abstract:
The traveling salesperson or salesman problem (TSP) is a well known and important combinatorial optimization problem. The goal is to find the shortest tour that visits each city in a given list exactly once and then returns to the starting city. Despite this simple problem statement, solving the TSP is difficult since it belongs to the class of NP-complete problems. The importance of the TSP arises besides from its theoretical appeal from the variety of its applications. In addition to vehicle routing, many other applications, e.g., computer wiring, cutting wallpaper, job sequencing or several data visualization techniques, require the solution of a TSP. In this paper we introduce the R package TSP which provides a basic infrastructure for handling and solving the traveling salesperson problem. The package features S3 classes for specifying a TSP and its (possibly optimal) solution as well as several heuristics to find good solutions. Abstract:
The ancient Maya afterlife is a rich and voluminous topic. Unfortunately, much of the material currently utilized for interpretations about the ancient Maya comes from publications written after contact by the Spanish or from artifacts with no context, likely looted items. Both sources of information can be problematic and can skew interpretations. Cosmological tales documented after the Spanish invasion show evidence of the religious conversion that was underway. Noncontextual artifacts are often altered in order to make them more marketable. An example of an iconographic theme that is incorporated into the surviving media of the ancient Maya, but that is not mentioned in ethnographically-recorded myths or represented in the iconography from most noncontextual objects, are the "travelers": a group of gods, humans, and animals who occupy a unique niche in the ancient Maya cosmology. This group of figures is depicted journeying from one level or realm of the universe to another by using objects argued to bridge more than one plane of existence at a time. They travel by holding onto or riding objects familiar to the ancient Maya that held other-world or afterlife symbolic significance and that are connected to events related to birth, death, and leadership. This group of figures (the "travelers"), represented across time and space and on wide ranging media, provides insight and broadens what is currently understood about the ancient Maya view of life and death by indicating a persistent belief in the ability to move from one realm to another in the afterlife.
M.A.
Office of Liberal and Interdisciplinary Studies
Other
Liberal Studies

Loveday, David Carl. "Resolving Small Objects Using Seismic Traveltime Tomography." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35032.

Full text
Abstract:
It is often claimed that the first Fresnel zone associated with the dominant frequency represents the spatial resolution limit of traveltime tomography. We show, however, that the relevant Fresnel limit for tomographic resolution is the maximum, not the dominant frequency in the data. For physically realizable causal wavelets, the maximum frequency is infinite. In practice, noise lowers the effective possible maximum frequency. To demonstrate these points, synthetic seismic data were generated for traveltime picking and inversion for a single, small velocity anomaly embedded in a homogeneous background velocity. A variety of traveltime picking techniques were tested and compared for their ability to detect the presence of objects smaller than that Fresnel zone associated with the dominant frequency. All methods produced accurate ray-theoretical (infinite-frequency) picks from noise-free seismic data for objects smaller than the dominant-frequency Fresnel zone. For the lowest dominant frequencies with Fresnel zones many times larger than the object, picking methods that focus on features along the onset of the first arrival were the most accurate, while cross-correlation with a known wavelet preformed less accurately. First-onset picking methods perform better because they take advantage of the highest frequencies in the data, whereas the correlation wavelet is typically in line with the dominant frequency. All methods successfully detected the presence of objects smaller than a wavelength. The inversion of the traveltime picks from the different picking methods always recovered the position and shape of the object. Random noise at a range of signal-to-noise ratios was then added to the seismic data and the data were repicked. Pick times with different noise realizations are statistically centered on the noise-free pick, not the time that would be recorded in the absence of the object. Trace stacking prior to picking or the averaging of many picks improves the signal-to-noise ratio and can extract signal that is not detected on an individual pick. An averaging of traveltime picks also occurs during tomographic inversion. This inherent signal-to-noise improvement allows tomography to image objects that are undetectable in individual trace picks. The resolution of tomography is limited not by the Fresnel zone associated with the dominant frequency, but by the accuracy of the traveltime picks. Resolution is further improved by dense ray coverage.
Master of Science

Abstract:
One of the most prominent trends of our time is the emergence of an information society. The amount of data available is absolutely surging, at the same time as we are becoming more and more dependent on constant access to updated and relevant information. To derive high quality information from a large quantity of textual data, we need efficient methods for structuring and querying the data. One way is to use the Vector Space Model (VSM), a mathematical way of representing the relationship between words and documents. Wellknown examples of this approach are Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) and Random Indexing (RI). This thesis describes the implementation of an information retrieval system based on the VSM that uses fragments of parse trees to index data.

Research has shown that the children of women with breast cancer are affected by the mother's disease due to the fact that the relationship between mother and child is special. The mother is traditionally responsible for the care of the children and when she falls ill the children experience anxiety about the future and their well-being is affected. The responsibility of the nurse is to promote health and prevent illness. The nurse should work from a holistic perspective ensuring that family and relatives are involved in order for all to cope better with the new situation. Aim of the study: The purpose of this literature review is to describe the experience of mothers between 19-65 years old with breast cancer while having 0-30-year old children. Furthermore, the purpose is also to describe the methodological aspect of data collection for the included articles of the study. Method: A descriptive literature review. Systematic searches on well-known databases using search terms was applied. Subject headings were used. 11 articles were included in the study. The data analysis was done gradually and the data was examined both individually and within the group before consensus was reached and the data categorized under themes. Findings: This study shows that the experience of breast cancer for mothers between 19-65 years old having children of 0-30 years is influenced by the fact that they are mothers. Results showed that mothers tried to maintain normality and to not let the breast cancer diagnosis affect their families, specifically their children, more than necessary. Mothers prioritized their children's needs before their own needs. The results showed that this is because of the mother´s conception of the children as being the woman’s and mother’s responsibility. The included articles in this study collected their data through different types of interview techniques and questionnaires. Conclusion: In order to provide good care for the mother affected by breast cancer and her family, it is important for the nurse to highlight not only the patient as a woman, but also as a mother and thus considering her entire lifeworld.

Abstract:
89
Abstract The goals of this thesis are to find the relationship between the business models and the characteristic in the online travel industry, to look over the differences in entering strategies among different entrants, and finally to figure out the future re-construction of the online travel industry after deconstruction pattern. First of all, this thesis discusses the structure and characteristics of travel industry. Then, it analyzes the impact caused by the improving online technology and observes the history of online travel industry in the United State of America. This thesis defines market segments and managing strategies of online travel industry, comparing to business models of other industries, to present the key success factors of travel websites. This thesis also infers the value-creating pattern, the effectiveness of virtual communities, customer relationship management, the mechanism of synergy caused by strategic alliance, the travel services under the moving communication, and the future development of the travel websites. Finally, the thesis states recommendations to the managers who plan to enter online travel industry in Taiwan. The main findings of this thesis are the followings: 1. The key success factors of travel websites are low prices of commodities, professional knowledge of operating experience goods, early entrance, advanced technology, varieties of products and services, and effective marketing strategies. 2. The competition among travel websites becomes greater after the major suppliers enter the market. Because of the similarities of the products, the profitability decreases with price war. In addition, due to lack of patent right to protect innovation and new applications in technology, key success factors become the necessary factors instead of adequate factors. 3. As specialization developing, an integrating tourism platform, like Amazon type, supported by advanced software will combine each fragmented and specialized businesses and provide consumers total autonomy, such as decide the schedule and tour fees by themselves, to enjoy both the elasticity of travel-by-oneself and the advantages of operating experience packages. Finally, with development of XML protocol and wireless technique, and the release of 3G license in the future, the demand in online traveling will be satisfied at any place and anytime, and the traveling will enter into the dimension of m-commerce. 4. In the mechanism of synergy of the strategic alliances among travel web sites, there are the principles of competition and cooperation to firms. When considering setting up the standard and platform, it is essential for firms to cooperate. When the goods are complementary and the suppliers are limited, firms should collaborate. 5. Most travel corporations in Taiwan are traditional. They depend on lots of labor and follow the old model. Infomediaries, who are with professional knowledge of tourism and play the role of activating the content in the websites and assuring the quality of tourism, will have great opportunities in this industry even without the niche of resource in the traditional travel industry.

Travel, as one of the crucial ingredients in creation, not only broadens one’s views through the sensitivity of journey but also fertilizes the spirit. In order to adapt the art into our lives, the series of ceramic works were created based on the format of household utensils, like bowls, dishes, and cups used in our daily lives. Sharing is the fundamental value of traveling. Therefore, I intend to share my own sensitivity of foreign cultures through functional ceramics works which symbolize my travelling experiences. The inspirations of the works were the countries where I had set foot on, such as Nepal, Morocco, Turkey, and Egypt. The illustrated diary, photographs, and related books were arranged in certain order to help delivering the cultural backgrounds, historic architectures, geographical features and remarkable custom in diet. Those elements have been rearranged and synthesized into the works which provide more imagination to the users via foreign features. This series of works were presented in an exhibition including a set of dining table. The set of tableware implies to the key value of works – functionality, and the other works were hanged on the wall to create an atmosphere of displaying documents and photographs in order to share my wonderful memories.

Abstract:
102
According to the statistics of Tourism Bureau, the travelling population and the frequency of taking a trip are increasing, and ecotourism is one of the travel patterns people are pursuing. The study aims to investigate potential tourists’ travel demand, travel value, and travel willingness of ecotourism via the concept of "Da-Yeh University Eco-Park" and assess whether the campus can meet the needs of tourists’ travel demand, travel value, and travel willingness, and see how the tourists’ travel demand and travel value would affect their travel willingness. Hopefully the result of the study can provide some views for schools wanting to develop eco-campus, investors wanting to develop eco-tourism park, and relevant eco-tourism units. A total of 283 valid questionnaires were recovered through convenience sampling. Research methods include "travel demand scale", "travel value scale" and "travel willingness scale." Statistical methods used for data processing are descriptive statistics, independent sample t tests, one-way ANOVA and simple linear regression analysis. The results are as follows: 1.Travel demand variables differ significantly in gender-specific needs of consuming demand and in children’s space requirements while marital status, education level, age, occupation, monthly income have no significant differences. 2. In travel value variables, no significant differences are found in marital status, children, education level, age, occupation, but are found in gender and monthly income. 3. Travel willingness variables found significant differences in gender, education level, monthly income and other background variables, but not in marital status, children, age, and occupation. 4. Travel demand and travel value have a significant positive impact on travel willingness and travel value has a higher influence on travel willingness than travel demand does.

Abstract:
84
The traveling purchaser problem (TPP) is an interesting generalization of the well-known traveling salesman problem (TSP), in which a set of commodity itemshave to be purchased at some markets selling various commodities with different prices, and the total travel and purchase costs must be minimized. The TPP has been shown to be NP-hard, even when severe restrictions on problem data are imposed. Because of the problem''s complexity, numerous heuristic solution procedures including the search algorithm, the generalized-savings algorithm, the tour- reduction algorithm, and the commodity-adding algorithm, have been proposed to solve the TPP approximately. In this paper, we consider several variations of the existing algorithms to improve the solutions. The proposed variations are compared with the existing solution procedures. The results indicated that the proposed variations significantly improved the original versions of the existing solution procedures.

Abstract:
93
This research is based on KMV model put forward of Morgan & Hunt (1994), and consult Garbarino & Johnson (1999) , Tax et al. (1998 ) and other relevant research to revise this model appropriately. This research hope tp build and construct a relation marketing model which is suitable for the traveling website. After empirical analysis, we can find that “relationship benefits”, “opportunistic behavior”, “website security”, and “complain satisfaction that deal with” really can pass “overall satisfaction”, ”trust” and “commitment” to influence “the future intentions” of consumers. So, if travel website industry persons can improve relation benefits that members can experience, prevent from producing the opportunistic behavior, deal carefully with consumers' complaint and raise security of website, they can increase member's satisfaction and trust to travel website. And then change them into loyal customer that paying attention to the long-term relation.
