Grund, Lisa Katharina. "Aasenîkon! : Makushi travelogues from the borderlands of Southern Guyana." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12167.

Abstract:
This ethnographic account focuses on the conceptions and practices of movement, as narrated by the Makushi people who live along the triple frontier of southern Guyana. The journeys - individual experiences, in particular of women – depict visits to other Makushi communities, to their neighbours and cities in Guyana, Brazil and Venezuela. The travelogues disclose Makushi premises on knowledge and its acquisition: gender, age, temporality and alterity. Exploring these concepts in practice, the ethnography points out the value the Makushi attribute to their encounters with others, situations in which risk and unpredictability are creatively incorporated as part of their sociality.

Abstract:

Al, Habsi Mohammed A. A. "Oman from exploration to tourism : the images of the country in early travellers' tales, travelogues and travel brochures (1838-2001)." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/577175.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses early travel accounts (1838-1959), travelogues (1996-2001) and travel brochures (2001) to investigate the image of Oman and its people in British travel texts. Although there have been a number of imagery studies within the field of tourism over the last two decades, they have been recently criticised by Gallarza et al. (2002) for their lack of theoretical orientation. This thesis is intended to be a modest step in addressing this criticism by re-appraising Said's well known work on Orientalism (1978) and works that foreshadowed it, by testing their political, theoretical and polemical propositions against detailed evidence to be found in case study evidence derived from close analysis of English texts on one country; Oman. The thesis investigates the extent to which these texts confirm/disconfirm Said's predominantly critical evaluation of Western (particularly British and French) representations of the east through the construct he calls 'Orientalism'. Through exploration of the imagery attached to Oman, this analysis is intended to contribute to the wider "Othering" debate in suggesting how people of a developing country are defined and gendered by people from developed ones. The thesis, which is based on three genres of travel texts, suggests a much more complex picture of the mechanisms of representations than Said (1978) suggests, showing, for example, that each textual category (travel book, travelogue, and brochure) had its own distinguishing variations in terms of ideological perspective, mode of address and substantive content. For example, political and imperial discourses were widely present in early travel accounts, while, by contrast, travelogue and travel brochure data were more constituted by discourses of consumerism and commerce, with residual I'olitical and imperial traces either silenced, muted or reconstituted as forms of nostalgia, or a depoliticised, sometimes, aestheticised, historic heritage. Moreover, although some early accounts contain negative denotations and connotations relating to Oman and its people that would support Said's broadly critical deconstruction of "Orientalism" as an ideological mechanism of control and appropriation, all three media representations, historical travel texts included, were far from presenting a uniform, or even predominant construction of Oman and its people that would support Said's critique. In two contextual chapters, this thesis appraIses historical encounters between Omanis and Westerns with focus on the British and Omani relationship, and offers an overview ofthe development of tourism in Oman. On the methodological front, the study is unusual as an investigation that combines inductive with deductive approaches, quantitative content analysis with qualitative semiotic analysis. Content analysis was used to examine the images of Oman reproduced in the three media. The quantitative findings were analysed qualitatively by using semiotic analysis to explore and interpret the meanings behind the quantitative results.

Woodcock-Squires, Zoe E. "Art Deco poets : reframing the works of W.H. Auden and Louis MacNeice in the context of Interwar Visual Art." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/17419.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines works by the British interwar writers W.H. Auden and Louis MacNeice in the context of their relationship with the contemporary style of visual art known as Art Deco or the Moderne. It is my contention that, having absorbed many of the Art Deco idioms as an accepted part of the world they experience, these are reflected in the writers' works, firmly relating the work to a unique historical moment, place and social and cultural environment. In my reading of their work I identify sources of inspiration in their themes, idioms and imagery common to the artistic style, and investigate the extent to which their work has been informed in content and composition by visual art. Using diaries, travelogues, letters, essays, prose and poetry, I will argue that if Art Deco characterised the interwar period, it follows that it will also characterise the work of Auden and MacNeice. As such, I seek to reframe their work in an entirely new context, one seemingly unnoticed by earlier critics. My project also considers the ways in which a worldview is formed and environments are learned from childhood, with reference to early twentieth-century psychologists Erich Fromm, Lev Vygotsky and Maria Montessori, in order to posit the notion that growing up in the heyday of Art Deco, Auden and MacNeice may have subceived a great many of its motifs. I also identify the ways in which the writers engage visual art with intent, and establish a relationship between the writers and Art Deco's politics, imagery and composition through discussion of individual poems and their co-authored book Letters From Iceland (1937). In particular, the thesis examines the presence and impact of Art Deco elements in their work, such as Cubism (using both visual and literary examples), Futurism, the cinema, the Ballets Russes, and interwar attempts at producing what Wagner termed gesamtkunstwerk, the 'total work of art'.

Abstract:
The aim of this doctoral work is to depict an image of the western world through a collection of notes from chinese travellers to the west between 1847-1910. And above all, understand their writing process contributing to it’s construction. Thus putting out the goal of this doctoral achievement. With a homogenous and stable weltanschauung formed during a two thousand years civilisation, the Chinese people used to believe that they master the realities of the world until they were forced to open up their country to the west at mid XIX th century. After an outgoing from their country which was very timid at the beginning, the chinese travellers came to be shocked in front of new facts characteristics of a modern world. That West, so new and so complex, make the travellers to depict it through an image which the process looks parallel to the appropriate type of the destination. An unusally diversified paratext analysis, a mixed type with different lengths which is found and can be seen during the temptation and evolution of this research.Observers with opened or closed mind, the travellers go all through Europe and the US, collecting alongway suitable informations necessary to the sociological analysis of the western people while creating neologisms used to name some strange and multiple facts. The interpretation of an unknown society needs adequate techniques of writing. The study of the role carried by the other’s rhetoric and the author (narrator, traveller and main character) enable us to identify them

Yoo, Jungmin. "Materiality and Writing: Circulation of Texts, Reading and Reception, and Production of Literature in Late 18th-century Korea." Thesis, Harvard University, 2014. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:13065154.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the literature of late Choson in its material context, examining how the physical aspects of the production and circulation of texts impacted the practice of writing. By analyzing various travelogues from Beijing (yonhaengnok) and private collections (munjip) from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth century, I examine how transcultural contacts across borders and changing textual environments influenced intellectual circles and literary trends in late Choson Korea. Interpreting the literary text as the material product of a culture, my study shifts the emphasis from the author as the creator of a text to the editors, publishers, collectors, and readers, through whose hands a text is reshaped and given new meaning. In light of the concept of social authorship, the written culture of late Choson will be revisited in relation to complex networks of social interactions. The print and manuscript culture of the day, socio-political groups that the author belonged to, the book market, and the government policies of that time provide interesting information on the practices of literary production, based on the larger cultural dynamics of East Asia. This dissertation revolves around a series of questions about circulation networks and their impact. In regard to the social and cultural condition of literary production in the eighteenth century, I examine transnational interactions with foreign intellectuals as well as collective coterie activities of reading and writing among the literati in Seoul. How did the flourishing of print culture of the Jiangnan area and the book markets in Beijing change the textual dynamics of Korea? Did the government censorship carried out by the Qing and the Choson governments effectively control the circulation of books? How did the Choson literati consume the foreign books and why did they form so many literary communities in Seoul? By investigating the large scope of these textual situations, I explore how the transcultural contacts "across borders" and the changing textual environments influenced intellectual circles and literary trends in late Choson. With respect to textual dynamics, I emphasize the various "informal networks" that have been placed at the center of book reception and consumption. For example, a number of book brokers in the Qing and Choson facilitated the distribution of books, and the sharing of manuscripts among friends in literary coteries was influential in the shaping of new literary tastes and public culture. These unconventional routes outside of established channels functioned as the actual key drivers of book culture in late Choson. My argument throughout this dissertation is that "informal circulation" is a central, rather than marginal, feature of eighteenth-century book culture and literary production. Through a specific case study of a literatus-official, Yi Tong-mu (1741-1793), my dissertation addresses these issues in three parts that consist of seven chapters: (1) Part One, "Social Authorship and Manuscript Production," examines how the writings of Yi Tong-mu were constructed and transmitted through a complex of social interactions and how the physical aspects of texts inform various transactions of human and non-human agencies in the production of texts. (2) Part Two, "The Location of Texts: Circulation of Books, Censorship, and Community Activities" traces how social networks among the domestic literati as well as among foreign intellectuals facilitated the circulation of books. First, I examine the large scope of transnational interaction between China and Korea, and the literary inquisition carried out by the Choson government in response to the changing textual environment. This is followed by a discussion of the poetry communities in Seoul, in which the Choson literati shared their reading practices and produced their common aesthetic tastes in their writings. (3) Part Three, "Making Meaning: Reading Self and Social Discourses," examines how Yi Tong-mu read books from the Ming and the Qing--such as those by Yuan Hongdao of the Ming and Wang Shizhen of the Qing--and wrote his own poetry and literary criticism and embodied his interpretive activities in his own works.

Abstract:
This practice-based research presents an analysis of the representation of embodied experience in the travelogue film genre. It reflects upon the embodied and synaesthesic nature of the cinematic experience by tracing a shift in travelogue filmmaking from the ocular realism characteristic of early travelogue films to the emergence and proliferation of subjective approaches. Moreover, it analyses experimental travelogue films and the capacity of non-linear and non-narrative structures to express sensuous, embodied perception. 9 Meditations is the practice component of this thesis. It is an experimental travelogue film. Through its production this research explores the translation of embodied experience as a multi-sensory process into filmmaking practice. In the field of film studies, the travelogue has not been widely discussed outside historical approaches, and it has certainly never been discussed in relation to phenomenology and embodied sensation. This research articulates a new conceptual framework for both the production and theorisation of the travelogue film, as a form that is intrinsically related to performance, subjectivity and embodied perception. Moreover, this research concerns both the production process in filmmaking practice and the cinematic experience as grounded in synaesthesic, embodied perception. This approach brings to the forefront the capacity of audiovisual practice to both encode and produce sensuous knowledge.

Abstract:
An average Swede buys 13 kilograms textile material every year, but an average Swede also throws away 8 kilograms every year. Adding a layer of exponential growth, I wonder what will happen with these numbers over the years and more importantly – how will it affect the emotional life of the consumer? Over the years I have developed an interest in the systemic entanglement of fashion – mainly as the urgency to create systemic shifts only has increased.  Fashruption is a happy marriage of the words fashion and disruption, and forms the title for this travelogue, exploring what a fashruption could be. Fashion – that adorns the bodies to showcase the self in the social. A phenomenon in constant dynamic flow of becoming, that thrives on an expiration date. And disruption – that perhaps can release space for a renegotiation on the ways we create identities and consume fashion. But what kind of disruption has the power to challenge current behaviours? This project is divided into two parts; first a problem setting design process focusing on exploring emotional logics (or illogics) that fashion is intertwined with, extracting reflections on relationships between production–consumption–creation of identities–waste. Secondly, a fashruption is suggested to be a large-scale campaign directed towards people with future-orientated momentum. It will present a strategy proposing ideas of designed material that gives space for self-reflection at the same time building knowledge, aiming to construct publics – who has the possibility to renegotiate the terms upon which they live.

Full text
Abstract:
Freedom is an important theme of the twentieth century, perhaps particularly during the decades around 1970, that time of struggle for liberation, the rebellion against the old ways, of individualism and collectivism. This thesis traces that theme through three genres of Swedish literature, from the sixties onwards: the autobiographical childhood novel, the travelogue and the science fiction novel. The different genres offer different possibilities for an author to discuss and depict the theme of freedom, explicitly and implicitly. Different narratological starting points create different conditions. Some returning issues are which restrictions on, opportunities for and meanings of freedom are visible in the texts. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to the different conventions of genre but also in relation to what the texts have in common, such as features of utopia, the encounter with the unfamiliar and strange, the search for a subjective truth or the zeitgeist of the year 1968. In that way, something can be said about the specific nature of fictive or partly fictive texts compared to other kinds of prose.

Abstract:
This essay aims to explore the emotional dimension of travelling through the eyes of four women across the world during the middle of the 1800s. The chosen Swedish women were collectively of middle- and upper-class status. The questions asked were the following: What emotional charge do the travelogues have regarding locations/culture/people? With the use of William Reddy’s Emotive and Barbra Rosenwein’s Emotional communities as a theoretical framework, the results showed that locations related to nature were extremely positive. Urban locations, on the other hand, were not as positive to see in Europe. This related to the ongoing industrialization of Europe, creating densely populated and unclean environments that became was seen with strong displeasure and charged with negative emotions. Culture was a category of emotional conflict for all four travellers. It showed that the Swedish and protestant background was strong in determining values and norms for these women and made it possible for strong, negative emotional experiences. Combined there was an ongoing evolution of thoughts with nationalistic and Eurocentric elements. People had positive attributes and emotions connected to them on an individual basis and were separated from their culture. Instead, negative emotions were connected to groups of people that conflicted with these women’s ideas and interests. Overall, the emotional dimension was a mix of strong positives and some strong negatives. A determining factor was the background, and an overall complexity to the emotional dimension was conclusive.

Abstract:
This work is a comprehensive sociological study on travelogues, specifically with focus on the Iran’s 19th century history (Qajar Dynasty). It presents an analysis that sociologically and systematically registers the staging of cultural boundaries and the socio-historical construction of foreignness in the Iranian society, on the basis of selected Persian travel literature. This study has tried to show that cultural and social boundaries are relational and historical constructs which, in case of Iran, are dramatically affected by the encounters of Iranians (statesmen, students, tourists, etc.) with western countries (Western Europe and Russia).

Abstract:
This research project explores the representations of Afghanistan in a corpus of travel narratives from the nineteenth and twentieh centuries. Overall, we can see great variations but also certain constants in the representations of this country. The Afghan imaginary in the nineteenth century is constructed on major themes related to the status and culture of travellers of the time, all related to the dynamics of the "Great Game" of the colonial empire in Asia; This is why a very particular geopolitical perspective characterizes all these narratives. The work of early travellers, almost all British, was focused on research in cartography, geography and political history. The Western imagination of Afghanistan in the twentieh century differs greatly from that of the previous century. First, the profile of travelers diversifies. On the other hand, greater variation in the orientation of writer-travellers, in their interests and their perception of the inhabitants and places is perceptible, despite the constants. In fact, a dual ethical and aesthetic dimension characterizes the imaginary of the Afghanistan in this period. In general, the representations of this country in the twentieh century, that is to say between the years 1920 and 1978, are characterized by the predominance of an "Edenlike" vision of the country, its inhabitants and its landscape

After the country independence proclaimed in 1821 and the first decades of political anarchy and instability, Peruvian governing leaders set themselves to building a modern state. Through this process, they aimed at building public facilities, diversifying means of communication and especially in adopting and implementing the new technologies created by the Industrial Revolution (railroads and steam engines) now affordable to exploit the guano deposits. Besides its rich subsoil raw material that underpinned the colonial economy, Peru has a less lenient topography because of its geographical contrasts combining deserts, mountains, and forests. This study suggests doing a historical review of the Republican Peru transportation means by examining the various mechanisms set up by political authorities to connect the country to the world, and by examining the existing situation of the communication networks back in the colonial era. The thesis defines not only the types of trades and transportation developed in different regions of Peru, but also examines the transition from traditional means of transportation (walking, mules, horses, and carriages) and modernity represented by steam engines traction. The interaction issue of these new technologies along with artisanal and traditional peasant economy is raised by comparing several administrative sets or those derived from travelogues

Abstract:
This study analyzes the travel conventions manifest in the engravings of the thirty-volume Description de l’Egypte produced as a result of the Napoleonic campaign to Egypt in 1798 and published between 1809 and 1828. The first chapter examines the discourse established on Egypt in travelogues throughout the eighteenth century prior to the invasion of the country. I argue that the perceptions developed around the country did not stem from actual experience, but from political and economic motivations that cast Egypt in a light favorable for occupation. I examine how this perception was challenged during the collapse of distance between the French and Egyptians in the process of colonial encounter. Drawing upon medical records and proclamations of the French medical team in Egypt, I examine a specific epidemic known as ophthalmia that led to swollen, irritated eyes and eventual blindness throughout the French army in Egypt. While it is actually caused by Chlamydia, in every appearance it makes in French medical records throughout the occupation, the disease was blamed on the climate, sunlight, and air specific to the land of Egypt. As a result, I argue that the Description’s hyper-real contrasts of light and dark and amplified decay in its representations of the monuments residing in Egypt’s ravaging climate are determined by the manner vision itself was altered by the epidemic of ophthalmia. I then contend that there exists a metaphorical parallel between the decaying pharaonic monuments in the Description and the perceived decay of modern Egyptian society that are linked by misconceptions of Egypt’s climate. I conclude that the effect of Egypt’s climate believed to destroy both physical monuments and physiological disposition was used as evidence to support the larger agenda of French imperialism that justified colonization of Egypt. Lastly, this study examines how Egyptians counteracted the negative discourse of their race by appropriating symbols of their country used in European representations and altering them to develop a national identity. Tracing the time period from French occupation through British colonization, Egyptians were able to galvanize resistance while still working within the confines of colonial control.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the characterization of Japan and Japanese people by Swedish travelers during the Meiji period. It seeks to answer what aspects of Japanese people two Swedish travelers chose to highlight, and how these aspects were presented in their travelogues. This thesis also has a second aim. By applying Edward Said’s theory of orientalism, it wants to answer if Swedish travelogues were influenced by western 19th century ideas of colonialism and imperialism. Finally, the third question deals with the question if these travelogues fit the general European discourse regarding Japan. The results show that the two Swedish travelers present many different parts of the Japanese; topics such as nature, industry and the character its inhabitants were all accounted for. Most of these different aspects were presented in a positive light, and this seems to hold true for the general perception of the country. It also shows that the travelogues fits in with the general Swedish perception of Japan; that it is a country inhabited by intelligent people that are considered to be highly civilized. However, it is still implied that the Japanese are not considered to be true equals, despite the travelers' claim that they are excelling in many areas compared to Europeans. The Japanese discourse is therefore one of admiration and also of a subtle feeling of superiority, though the latter is not as overt in its presentation as it was with orientalism.

Abstract:
There are many studies that discuss the image of the "other" in the Arab heritage and the image of the Arab heritage from the 'perspective of the "other." However, most of these studies focus on the present era and the western "other". This study is different in theme and period than studies which have been done previously. Its theme is the image of Turkey and the Turks in a work which belongs to Arab travel literature and which was written more than three centuries ago. There is a noticeable lack in studies that examine the image of the "other" in Arab travel literature by writers belonging to the Arabian Peninsula. The travelogue of Ibrāhīm al-Khiyārī is a literary work written by one of the citizens of that area, therefore, the researcher hopes that his effort will represent an approach which contributes to filling this gap and which sheds light on the cultural production of intellectuals from the Arabian Peninsula in the past centuries. Using the descriptive analytical method, this study has tried to cover aspects of the topic within the conditions available and has written six chapters on the following topics: previous studies on the subject, histories of the Ḥijāz and the Ottoman Empire, the classification of travel writings, a presentation of the travelogue as an object of this study as well as the author and his context, Turkey in the seventh century, its civilization and culture, and finally, the image of non-Muslims in Turkey in the text of the writer. Through an extrapolation of texts that talk about the "non-Muslim other" it is clear that the author of this travelogue - like many writers in past and present - was under the influence of cultural and historical influences especially with regards to the aforementioned minorities, as bias seems to be evident in multiple texts. It therefore seems as though he was writing a personal impression of the "other" rather than simply describing what he saw and experienced.

Abstract:

This essay examines a small selection of Swedish newsreel and documentary short films, primarily travelogues, produced shortly before and after the second world war. The general aim is to expose differences in the representation of “The Other” and the “ethnic Swede” by applying a critical discourse analysis. The purpose is to illuminate how the material positions the latter as the norm and then contextualize this with xenophobic currents that had developed up until the middle of the twentieth century. Theoretical and methodological framework is drawn from the field of cultural studies as well as the nonfiction film. The analysis shows that the Swedish newsreel and travelogue indeed, to a high degree, possessed these currents even though part of them, mainly the anti-Semitic ideas, seems to relapse after the Holocaust.

Abstract:
The dissertation aims at discussing Dostoevsky\'s political thinking. This shall be done through the comparative analysis of Winter Notes on Summer Impressions (1863) a collection of articles on the author\'s impressions after his first trip to Europe, in 1862 and another important travelogue that preceded Dostoevsky\'s, Letters from France and Italy (1855), by Aleksandr Gertsen (Herzen). These two works, whose authors take rather divergent positions within the Westernizers-Slavophiles spectrum in 19th century Russia, synthesize their political views, chiefly concerning the complex relationship between Russia and the West. My claim is that comparing Dostoevsky to one of the main spokesmen of his ideological antagonists may prove fruitful to understanding his political ideas

Abstract:
Travel writing and experience to different parts of the world were quite popular in the 19th century, having inspired generations of Europeans to quest for exoticism and mythic origins of Western culture. Central Asia had always been one of these territories which attracted British travellers and explorers. The clandestine imperial rivalry between Russia and Britain for the mastery of Central Asia multiplied the number of British travellers towards this unknown Orient. Among the most famous travelogues of this period are those written by Alexander Burnes, a military envoy, by Armenius Vambéry, an orientalist, by Florentia Sale and Frances Duberly, officers’ spouses, by Henry Lansdell, a missionary, by Frederick Burnaby, an adventurer, and by many others. These travel narratives, versatile and heterogeneous, bring on a problem of generic definition. Our dissertation aims at examining the phenomenon of Otherness, inherent to travel writing, as well as at mapping within narrative perspective the geopolitical and literary concerns in Central Asia. By choosing this approach our work strives to avoid the reduction of the British travelling discourse in this particular geographical area to a simple legitimacy of imperial policy in the Victorian age

Материалом для работы послужили произведения Гретель Эрлих ‘In the Empire of Ice: Encounters in a Changing Landscape’ (2010) и Сары Уилер ‘The Magnetic North: Travels in the Arctic’ (2009).
The work is devoted to the study of the features of conducting travelogues dedicated to the journey of women writers in the Arctic region. The material for the thesis was the works of Gretel Ehrlich ‘In the Empire of Ice: Encounters in a Changing Landscape’ (2010) and Sarah Wheeler ‘The Magnetic North: Travels in the Arctic’ (2009). The first chapter reviews questions related to the interpretation of the concept of "travelogue", and a detailed description of its genre and language characteristics is provided. The main directions in the study of the concept of "narrative strategy" and "narrative persona" are also considered, the image of the Arctic that has developed in the works of various scientists and travelers is studied. The second chapter of the work examines the features of travelogues authored by Gretel Ehrlich and Sarah Wheeler, which includes an analysis of the problems and topics that were voiced by the writers themselves in the text. After that, each of the problems presented in the works is considered in more detail. The identification of specific features of writing a work in the genre of literary travel, covering aspects of the author's trip to the Arctic region, is the basis on which the key aspects of the study were built. The results of the work can be used in other studies in the field of travel literature and the image of the Arctic, for the development of courses in literary studies and modern Western literature.

Abstract:
The two great European capitals, Paris and London, are emblematic of the phenomenon of urban growth in the second half of the Enlightenment. The aim of our study, based on travelogues, architectural treatises and other writings on the two cities, is to elaborate a cultural and literary history of Paris and London by means of a multiple approach of the concept of representation which combines history and poetics. On the one hand, the analysis of the urban projects designed for Paris and London allows us to pinpoint two complementary manners of conceiving the city: public magnificence and public utility. Between these two poles emerge the concepts of embellissement and (urban) improvement which stem from an artistic and, respectively, technical urban imaginary. Moreover, the general debate on urban improvement fosters the emergence of a public sphere of science, demonstrated through two maps of places of science in Paris and London, conceived for the purposes of this study. On the other hand, a poetic approach of these urban representations shows the overlapping of aesthetic and epistemological issues. Firstly, the emergence of the architectural concept of character accounts for the link between the process of reading the city, the collaboration of arts at this time and urban improvement. Secondly, the comparative analysis of different types of urban descriptions allows us to demonstrate the circulation of several descriptive patterns, among which the pattern of the ideal city is the perfect embodiment of the subtle connections between urban forms and forms of discourse in the second half of the Enlightenment

Abstract:
The Icelandic case it is about understanding how the image of a country can be shaped from elsewhere and by literary vectors. The image of Iceland in France has been shaped as a distant and mysterious country, a picture that still persists in the minds today, the island has preserved the element of the unknown and this enigmatic appearance, despite numerous contemporary sources. Cliches and stereotypes are still perpetuated today in the French collective imagination. The Iceland history remains relatively unknown, its artistic and cultural influence nevertheless confers a non-negligible presence on the international stage. This work not only intends to contribute to the construction of the history of the representations of Iceland, but it also aims to understand the political and economic conditions that allowed the spreading in Europe of the representations of this country, customs and culture of its inhabitants. This thesis also seeks to show how all collective image of Iceland have been interpreted in the history of representations. To meet the deficit of researches on Iceland and its representations, it will combine contextualized analysis of a literary corpus (travel stories and scientific articles) and an iconographic corpus (universal cosmographies) containing engravings and maps, to understand how it was possible to perceive a population and a territory that had long been designated as outside Europe

This study intends to explain how the travel guides Guia Prático, Histórico e sentimental da Cidade do Recife, by Gilberto Freyre, and Bahia de Todos os Santos, by Jorge Amado, could built a kind of political and cultural project to Recife and Salvador, respectively. On this purpose, this work starts from a reflection about foreign travelers reports about Brazil and its contributions to the formation of a picturesque look at the country, a kind view that would have influenced forcefully the construction of Brazilian national identity, in the nineteenth century . Otherwise , we try to understand how Amado‘s and Freyre‘s travels would have reflected in the composition of their guides. From the travelogue, created by a writer who is also a traveller, maybe we could think about a host-writer, that offers to the turist-reader some new elements to compose the urban imagination, wich would take part of his viewing in a real visit. The itineraries proposed by the authors also have marks of their respective ideological projects, part of a specific political and cultural context, situated between the 1930s and 1940s. So, looks like the cultural regionalism and marxist ideology punctuate the travelguides of both writers. In the intertwining of all these elements, it would be possible to check the creative process behind some topics that make up the so-called order of city signs, understood as the symbolic dimension that dialogues with the physical materiality of landscaped sets and landmarks as elements wich acts in the local identity. Thus, it would be possible to understand the approach that the authors conduct of allegedly tourist elements, such as the nature and architecture of these cities destination, in a written deviation from reports and travel guides produced by then. Rather, Amado and Freyre raise the foreground human occupation of such destinations, which is realized as a source of a specific culture that values local identity.

The history of the Suez canal is a field of study that is still as alive and sensitive as ever, one that elicits mixed feelings. It is the story of its symbolism and the fantasies and projections that have sprung from it that is studied through a heretofore-unexamined literary and iconographical corpus. The originality of this research lies in its multiple approaches and the number of works assembled, which enables one to step out of a narrow chronology of the digging of the canal. It seeks to go beyond the restrictive vision of an endeavour that cannot be considered French colonial action yet is shot through with an ideology of conquest. It brings a fresh approach to the representation of orientalist travel. The artistic heritage born of this universal public work finally poses the question of its reception and how its memory is shared between East and West, with as much at stake today as ever

Abstract:

Doctoral dissertation The aesthetics of journalistic travelogue reportage among the two world wars in Serbian literature, by interpretative and comparative methods determines the existence of aesthetic intentions in this genre, on the example of texts written by the leading writers of the Serbian avant-garde Miloš Crnjanski, Rastko Petrović, Stanislav Vinaver, as well as Rade Drainac and some other traditional writers like Dragiša Vasić, Stanislav Krakow and Grigorije Božović. Contrary to the documentary-factual (reporting) level of meaning of travelogue reportages, a deeper, fictional and poetic-connotative layer is revealed, which links them with the literary system. The analysis of conceptual, poetic, structural-formalistic and linguistically-stylistic characteristics of the representative texts of this genre determines the methods of aesthetization that introduce them into the literary system - expressed subjectivity, literary and intertextuality. The dissertation points to the significance of this sub-genre of the travelogue in the avant-garde process of stratifying the genres, as well as its contribution to the spreading of the literary field in the new communication and reception field in the expansion - the daily newspapers. Intertextual, intermedial and intercultural dialogue of this type of texts is analyzed. The results of the work can be applied in historical, sociological and comparative research of the among the two world wars epoch in Serbian literature, as well as in the journalistic research of the genre of the reportage.

Lorentz, Pascaline. Thesis, Strasbourg, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012STRAG013.

Abstract:
In many books, articles, conferences, we can read, hear, notice that gaming is helping the socialization process, that games are socializing tools and that is the reason why video games could be “good” for individuals (Greenfield, 1994 ; Taylor, 2002 ; Gee, 2003). But what is that socialization? What does this specific socialization is bringing to the overall understanding of the evolution of individuals in our societies? In one word: what is the video-ludological socialization? The concept of socialization is widely used by many disciplines such as Sociology, Social Psychology, Communication Sciences, Media Studies, Game Studies and Educational Studies and so forth. Socialization, which is the social process that makes a subject become a social being, is a key concept for understanding society and its functioning. That is why I scrutinize video-ludological socialization in this dissertation. To cast light on benefits of this specific socialization, no game is better than one simulating life which is also very popular: The Sims. For my research I overlooked praxis of teenagers gaming and how they utilize the gameplay to experiment social behaviours. In this thesis, I propose to explain what video gaming is bringing more than usual play by presenting findings of this study carried out in two steps with 180 teenagers from 12 to 16 years old. This video-ludological socialization, befalling through interacting, is part of the main socialization process which lasts during all the lifespan of individuals (Berger & Luckmann, 1966). In my research, I demonstrated that gaming with The Sims channels the video-ludological socialization process and that gaming plays an active role in gamers’ social lives

Mark Twain is generally known for his novels about African-Americans, but actually, he is also a significant travel writer and active Anti-Imperialist during the age of American expansion overseas. The thesis focuses on his traveling encounters with the Others, especially the East. By chronologically displaying his changing writing styles when representing the Others and analyzing these representations with the history of American expansion, I present Twain’s quest for an ideal American identity as well as his reflections on the suitable relationship between Americans and the Others during his journeys. Based on the textual evidence, I propose that Twain’s traveling experiences are of significance among various factors contributing to his anti-imperialist thoughts in the late years. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One discusses Twain’s first experiences traveling abroad during the 1860s. His lectures on Hawaii and the Middle East images in Innocents Abroad (1869) serve as his earliest representations of Others. Chapter Two focuses on Twain’s encounters with and descriptions of Chinese laborers in American West, his writing style and narrative tone having changed when representing Chinese Americans. Chapter Three deals with Twain’s travelogues about India in Following the Equator (1897), in which Twain develops a fresh perspective to admire the culture of Others. Chapter Four presents Twain’s anti-imperialist thoughts as the legacy of his former traveling experiences. Following Mark Twain’s steps and exploring his traveling representations on the Others, the thesis displays his transforming thoughts and charts out his trajectory of growth, connecting Twain’s racial concerns, travel literatures and anti-imperialist career, trying to provide an all-round perspective on the writer.

Trip planning is an important and time-consuming step for backpackers. Most research focuses on finding the travel sequence from different data sources such as blog, photos and GPS. Although these approaches can recommend some popular travel sequences for a tourist, but tourist’s place preferences and temporal constraints are not considered. In this thesis, we propose an approach for personalized trip planning which takes tourist’s preference and temporal constraint into consideration. In the proposed approach, first the place names are extracted from travelogues with the aid of the Wikipedia. Then the travel sequences are extracted from travelogues. Based on the relationship of mutual reinforcement between the authority of a place and the hub of a travelogue author, the authority of each place is derived. Moreover, the stay time of each place is estimated from the information of travel photos of a web album. Finally, based on the user specified place preference and temporal constraints, this thesis presents the algorithms to arrange a personalized trip for a user. The experiments show that the place name extraction achieves 92% precision and 100% recall. For the estimation of place stay time, the error is 3.16% compared with the ground truth collected from well-known backpacker site.

Vedenyapin, Yuri. "In the Privacy of One’s Own Homelessness: The Search for Identity in Twentieth-Century Yiddish Travelogues." Thesis, 2016. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8KP826R.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation argues that the richness and distinctiveness of modern Yiddish travel literature—with its emphasis on arriving rather than departing—reflects the complexity of such East European Jewish notions as home, homelessness, and wandering. It examines the ways in which the experience of travel affected the search for identity, home, and belonging by Yiddish writers from the first secularized and westernized generation of East European Jews. Yiddish travelogues written in the first four decades of the twentieth century show a curious trend with respect to the search for identity and the destinations that are their subject. These destinations fall into two categories: those with specific Jewish connotations and those without. For writers addressing the latter destination category, even though motivated by the search for a Jewish identity, locales beyond the Jewish map engender the greatest sense of empowerment. Even when their ostensible motivations and emphases are diametrically opposed, they arrive at the same conclusion, that Jews belong simultaneously nowhere and everywhere. Peretz Hirschbein and Melech Ravitch are exemplary illustrations of this tendency: the former laments the countless roads on which Jews have traveled and many borders that separate them; he longs for universal brotherhood and closeness to nature, and as such rejects the diversity of the Jewish experience; the latter, on the contrary, celebrates diversity. How can we explain this trend? It is born of the contradictory set of ideological and artistic aims and interests of a generation that rejected the traditional beliefs and lifestyle of their parents, and that aimed to create a body of modern literature in Yiddish that would equal major European literatures, and that internalized a number of European cultural (primarily literary) tropes. Moreover, this literature was the product of a generation of writers who yearned for an organic connection to Jewish past, present, and future and at the same time saw problems with every existing ideology. The Introduction situates the study within the context of Jewish cultural and literary history and addresses questions of scope and methodology. Chapter 1 analyzes Yiddish travel writers’ fascination with exotic destinations lacking specifically Jewish connotations and its role in these writers’ struggles to define their cultural identity. Chapter 2 analyzes the work of Peretz Hirschbein and argues that his longing for universal brotherhood and closeness to nature reflected both a reluctance to celebrate the diversity of the Jewish experience and an impulse to embrace its global proportions. Chapter 3 focuses on the life and work of Melech Ravitch and contrasts his passion for diversity with the opposite approach of Peretz Hirschbein. Chapter 4 explores Yiddish writers’ travel to Mandate Palestine and to Soviet Russia and focuses on the parallels between travelogues about these two politically charged destinations. Chapter 5 examines the development of Yiddish travel literature after World War II, focusing both on works that describe travel back to Eastern Europe and are dominated by the themes of mourning and preservation, and on later works, filled with the urge to affirm a worldwide Jewish presence. The Conclusion recapitulates the dissertation’s main points and stresses the uniqueness of the Yiddish travelogue and its importance in Jewish studies and beyond.

Al-Attar, I. "Textual representations of the socio-urban history of Baghdad : critical approaches to the historiography of Baghdad in the 18th and 19th centuries." Thesis, 2014. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/18555/2/Whole-attar-thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on historiography, which is the study of history and methodology of the discipline of history. The problems of historical theory and the role of critical theory in historical understanding are the main objectives of this study. The thesis explores the urban history of Baghdad in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, to posit alternative historiographical methods that involve non-conventional textual representations as historical evidence. These textual representations include poetry, travelogues and narratives around non-monumental everyday urban places, all of which are often ignored in conventional history writing. Conventional approaches to historiography are normally single-layered and limited, and contain gaps or ‘absences’ of distinctive local historical themes and spaces that are smoothed over by grand narratives. The alternative method in historiography suggested in this thesis emphasises the need for closer ties between history and literary criticism. It interprets literature in relation to knowledge, and it discloses their philosophical connections to the ‘overlooked’ meanings in urban history. Although the alternative method comprises strong links to literary analysis, the thesis seeks a combination of both scientific and speculative philosophies, and an addition of extra concepts, towards the generation of specific historiographical concepts and themes. Baghdad provides an excellent vehicle to investigate the general problem of historiography, with its complex history of conquest and colonisation, its long history of creative writings and the vague representation of its urban spaces in current historiographical studies. Although this thesis explored the entire history of Baghdad, the period of interest is the Mamluk period between mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. In addition to the transformation and change that shaped Baghdad’s urban history, this period significantly produced rich poetry and historical narratives that embraced plentiful themes of the urban development of the city, which have been overlooked in conventional historiography. These themes include the measures of beauty of Baghdad, the attractive and interlocking qualities of the Tigris River, Karkh region and markets, the multiple meanings of gardens and learning centres, and the social and leisure significance of houses. The thesis focuses on the poetry of the prominent scholar and poet Sheikh Kadhem Al-Uzari, the historian and religious scholar Sheikh Abdul-Rahman Al-Suwaidi, and the poet and chief of the writing bureau in Baghdad Sheikh Saleh Al-Tamimi, in addition to a number of texts by other scholars in that period. The thesis also focuses on the travelogues of mainly four travelers who wrote significant observations of Baghdad during this period, namely; the surveyor Carsten Niebuhr, the entomologist Guillaume Antoine Olivier, the British resident Claudius Rich and the traveler and writer James Silk Buckingham. The thesis also refers to the writings of philosophers such as Edward Said, Hans Georg Gadamer and Michel Foucault for philosophical frameworks to outline the alternative method of interpretation of these texts. The analysis of poetry and narratives composed by Baghdadis in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and of travelogues of the same period, is ‘another’ method in historiography that is intended to support and complement the existing understanding of the city’s history, and to attain a more dialogical interface with the past. In this way, historiography becomes a more critical influential discipline in historical studies.

Abstract:
In Chinese history, there were always overseas people travelling to China, including Japanese sinologists, many of whom had recorded their impressions of China by composing travelogues. Considering the political implication and the genre application of this kind of materials, this research adopts the term "travelogues about China" to generalize all these records. The time period to be discussed in this research project is the whole Meiji era, namely, from 1868 to 1912, less than half a century, corresponding roughly to the late Qing period. These two countries had undergone tremendous but reversed revolutions during this period. That is to say, when Japan made progress everyday, China, on the other hand, was in an apparent state of decline. Travelogues about China 150 years ago provide people nowadays with a new research angle to comprehend and enter the late Qing history from Japanese sinologists’ perspectives.
Previous research about on Japanese travelogues about China in Chinese during the Meiji Period focused on historical descriptions of Sino-Japanese political relationships, however, the value of cultural exchange and transformation of knowledge between literary elites from both of these two countries remain to be discussed. This research plans to focus on Takezoe Shin’ichirō’s San’un Kyōu Nikki (A Diary of Clouds Hanging between the Mountains and Rain in the Ravines), Oka Senjin’s Kanko Kiyū (Travel Reports for Sightseeing) and Yamamoto Ken’s Enzan Sosui Kiyū (Travel Reports for the Mountains of North China and the Rivers of South China), which were regarded as the three most representative Japanese travelogues about China in Chinese. Respectively, they represented Japanese travel writing about China in the early, the middle and the late Meiji period and indicated that the ending of the traditional Japanese travelogues about China in Chinese was approaching. In addition, they also had a profound impact on the following Japanese travel literature about China. The genre of travelogue also exercised an invisible and formative influence on Japanese views of China in the modern era. All of these three sinologists were educated in the old style and had deep backgrounds of traditional Chinese learning. Through writing, they expressed the distance between imagination and reality after experiencing China for themselves, and various recorded aspects of the late Qing’s social politics and civil life. They played an important role in modern Sino-Japanese cultural exchange and transformation of knowledge. It will also discuss modern Sino-Japanese literati cultural and book exchange, transformation of knowledge and other issues centered on the practice of conversations by writing Chinese. This research hopes to return to the late Qing and reflect on China through its neighbors’ perspectives.
