Full textThe aim of this doctoral work is to depict an image of the western world through a collection of notes from chinese travellers to the west between 1847-1910. And above all, understand their writing process contributing to it’s construction. Thus putting out the goal of this doctoral achievement. With a homogenous and stable weltanschauung formed during a two thousand years civilisation, the Chinese people used to believe that they master the realities of the world until they were forced to open up their country to the west at mid XIX th century. After an outgoing from their country which was very timid at the beginning, the chinese travellers came to be shocked in front of new facts characteristics of a modern world. That West, so new and so complex, make the travellers to depict it through an image which the process looks parallel to the appropriate type of the destination. An unusally diversified paratext analysis, a mixed type with different lengths which is found and can be seen during the temptation and evolution of this research.Observers with opened or closed mind, the travellers go all through Europe and the US, collecting alongway suitable informations necessary to the sociological analysis of the western people while creating neologisms used to name some strange and multiple facts. The interpretation of an unknown society needs adequate techniques of writing. The study of the role carried by the other’s rhetoric and the author (narrator, traveller and main character) enable us to identify them

Full textFreedom is an important theme of the twentieth century, perhaps particularly during the decades around 1970, that time of struggle for liberation, the rebellion against the old ways, of individualism and collectivism. This thesis traces that theme through three genres of Swedish literature, from the sixties onwards: the autobiographical childhood novel, the travelogue and the science fiction novel. The different genres offer different possibilities for an author to discuss and depict the theme of freedom, explicitly and implicitly. Different narratological starting points create different conditions. Some returning issues are which restrictions on, opportunities for and meanings of freedom are visible in the texts. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to the different conventions of genre but also in relation to what the texts have in common, such as features of utopia, the encounter with the unfamiliar and strange, the search for a subjective truth or the zeitgeist of the year 1968. In that way, something can be said about the specific nature of fictive or partly fictive texts compared to other kinds of prose.

Full textThis essay aims to explore the emotional dimension of travelling through the eyes of four women across the world during the middle of the 1800s. The chosen Swedish women were collectively of middle- and upper-class status. The questions asked were the following: What emotional charge do the travelogues have regarding locations/culture/people? With the use of William Reddy’s Emotive and Barbra Rosenwein’s Emotional communities as a theoretical framework, the results showed that locations related to nature were extremely positive. Urban locations, on the other hand, were not as positive to see in Europe. This related to the ongoing industrialization of Europe, creating densely populated and unclean environments that became was seen with strong displeasure and charged with negative emotions. Culture was a category of emotional conflict for all four travellers. It showed that the Swedish and protestant background was strong in determining values and norms for these women and made it possible for strong, negative emotional experiences. Combined there was an ongoing evolution of thoughts with nationalistic and Eurocentric elements. People had positive attributes and emotions connected to them on an individual basis and were separated from their culture. Instead, negative emotions were connected to groups of people that conflicted with these women’s ideas and interests. Overall, the emotional dimension was a mix of strong positives and some strong negatives. A determining factor was the background, and an overall complexity to the emotional dimension was conclusive.

Full textThis work is a comprehensive sociological study on travelogues, specifically with focus on the Iran’s 19th century history (Qajar Dynasty). It presents an analysis that sociologically and systematically registers the staging of cultural boundaries and the socio-historical construction of foreignness in the Iranian society, on the basis of selected Persian travel literature. This study has tried to show that cultural and social boundaries are relational and historical constructs which, in case of Iran, are dramatically affected by the encounters of Iranians (statesmen, students, tourists, etc.) with western countries (Western Europe and Russia).

Full textThis research project explores the representations of Afghanistan in a corpus of travel narratives from the nineteenth and twentieh centuries. Overall, we can see great variations but also certain constants in the representations of this country. The Afghan imaginary in the nineteenth century is constructed on major themes related to the status and culture of travellers of the time, all related to the dynamics of the "Great Game" of the colonial empire in Asia; This is why a very particular geopolitical perspective characterizes all these narratives. The work of early travellers, almost all British, was focused on research in cartography, geography and political history. The Western imagination of Afghanistan in the twentieh century differs greatly from that of the previous century. First, the profile of travelers diversifies. On the other hand, greater variation in the orientation of writer-travellers, in their interests and their perception of the inhabitants and places is perceptible, despite the constants. In fact, a dual ethical and aesthetic dimension characterizes the imaginary of the Afghanistan in this period. In general, the representations of this country in the twentieh century, that is to say between the years 1920 and 1978, are characterized by the predominance of an "Edenlike" vision of the country, its inhabitants and its landscape

Full textAfter the country independence proclaimed in 1821 and the first decades of political anarchy and instability, Peruvian governing leaders set themselves to building a modern state. Through this process, they aimed at building public facilities, diversifying means of communication and especially in adopting and implementing the new technologies created by the Industrial Revolution (railroads and steam engines) now affordable to exploit the guano deposits. Besides its rich subsoil raw material that underpinned the colonial economy, Peru has a less lenient topography because of its geographical contrasts combining deserts, mountains, and forests. This study suggests doing a historical review of the Republican Peru transportation means by examining the various mechanisms set up by political authorities to connect the country to the world, and by examining the existing situation of the communication networks back in the colonial era. The thesis defines not only the types of trades and transportation developed in different regions of Peru, but also examines the transition from traditional means of transportation (walking, mules, horses, and carriages) and modernity represented by steam engines traction. The interaction issue of these new technologies along with artisanal and traditional peasant economy is raised by comparing several administrative sets or those derived from travelogues

Full textThis essay examines a small selection of Swedish newsreel and documentary short films, primarily travelogues, produced shortly before and after the second world war. The general aim is to expose differences in the representation of “The Other” and the “ethnic Swede” by applying a critical discourse analysis. The purpose is to illuminate how the material positions the latter as the norm and then contextualize this with xenophobic currents that had developed up until the middle of the twentieth century. Theoretical and methodological framework is drawn from the field of cultural studies as well as the nonfiction film. The analysis shows that the Swedish newsreel and travelogue indeed, to a high degree, possessed these currents even though part of them, mainly the anti-Semitic ideas, seems to relapse after the Holocaust.

Full textThe dissertation aims at discussing Dostoevsky\'s political thinking. This shall be done through the comparative analysis of Winter Notes on Summer Impressions (1863) a collection of articles on the author\'s impressions after his first trip to Europe, in 1862 and another important travelogue that preceded Dostoevsky\'s, Letters from France and Italy (1855), by Aleksandr Gertsen (Herzen). These two works, whose authors take rather divergent positions within the Westernizers-Slavophiles spectrum in 19th century Russia, synthesize their political views, chiefly concerning the complex relationship between Russia and the West. My claim is that comparing Dostoevsky to one of the main spokesmen of his ideological antagonists may prove fruitful to understanding his political ideas

Full textTravel writing and experience to different parts of the world were quite popular in the 19th century, having inspired generations of Europeans to quest for exoticism and mythic origins of Western culture. Central Asia had always been one of these territories which attracted British travellers and explorers. The clandestine imperial rivalry between Russia and Britain for the mastery of Central Asia multiplied the number of British travellers towards this unknown Orient. Among the most famous travelogues of this period are those written by Alexander Burnes, a military envoy, by Armenius Vambéry, an orientalist, by Florentia Sale and Frances Duberly, officers’ spouses, by Henry Lansdell, a missionary, by Frederick Burnaby, an adventurer, and by many others. These travel narratives, versatile and heterogeneous, bring on a problem of generic definition. Our dissertation aims at examining the phenomenon of Otherness, inherent to travel writing, as well as at mapping within narrative perspective the geopolitical and literary concerns in Central Asia. By choosing this approach our work strives to avoid the reduction of the British travelling discourse in this particular geographical area to a simple legitimacy of imperial policy in the Victorian age

Full textThe work is devoted to the study of the features of conducting travelogues dedicated to the journey of women writers in the Arctic region. The material for the thesis was the works of Gretel Ehrlich ‘In the Empire of Ice: Encounters in a Changing Landscape’ (2010) and Sarah Wheeler ‘The Magnetic North: Travels in the Arctic’ (2009). The first chapter reviews questions related to the interpretation of the concept of "travelogue", and a detailed description of its genre and language characteristics is provided. The main directions in the study of the concept of "narrative strategy" and "narrative persona" are also considered, the image of the Arctic that has developed in the works of various scientists and travelers is studied. The second chapter of the work examines the features of travelogues authored by Gretel Ehrlich and Sarah Wheeler, which includes an analysis of the problems and topics that were voiced by the writers themselves in the text. After that, each of the problems presented in the works is considered in more detail. The identification of specific features of writing a work in the genre of literary travel, covering aspects of the author's trip to the Arctic region, is the basis on which the key aspects of the study were built. The results of the work can be used in other studies in the field of travel literature and the image of the Arctic, for the development of courses in literary studies and modern Western literature.
Girleanu, Simona. "Histoires et poétiques de la ville : représentations de Paris et Londres dans la deuxième moitié des Lumières." Thesis, Lille 3, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LIL30009.
Full textThe two great European capitals, Paris and London, are emblematic of the phenomenon of urban growth in the second half of the Enlightenment. The aim of our study, based on travelogues, architectural treatises and other writings on the two cities, is to elaborate a cultural and literary history of Paris and London by means of a multiple approach of the concept of representation which combines history and poetics. On the one hand, the analysis of the urban projects designed for Paris and London allows us to pinpoint two complementary manners of conceiving the city: public magnificence and public utility. Between these two poles emerge the concepts of embellissement and (urban) improvement which stem from an artistic and, respectively, technical urban imaginary. Moreover, the general debate on urban improvement fosters the emergence of a public sphere of science, demonstrated through two maps of places of science in Paris and London, conceived for the purposes of this study. On the other hand, a poetic approach of these urban representations shows the overlapping of aesthetic and epistemological issues. Firstly, the emergence of the architectural concept of character accounts for the link between the process of reading the city, the collaboration of arts at this time and urban improvement. Secondly, the comparative analysis of different types of urban descriptions allows us to demonstrate the circulation of several descriptive patterns, among which the pattern of the ideal city is the perfect embodiment of the subtle connections between urban forms and forms of discourse in the second half of the Enlightenment

Full textThe Icelandic case it is about understanding how the image of a country can be shaped from elsewhere and by literary vectors. The image of Iceland in France has been shaped as a distant and mysterious country, a picture that still persists in the minds today, the island has preserved the element of the unknown and this enigmatic appearance, despite numerous contemporary sources. Cliches and stereotypes are still perpetuated today in the French collective imagination. The Iceland history remains relatively unknown, its artistic and cultural influence nevertheless confers a non-negligible presence on the international stage. This work not only intends to contribute to the construction of the history of the representations of Iceland, but it also aims to understand the political and economic conditions that allowed the spreading in Europe of the representations of this country, customs and culture of its inhabitants. This thesis also seeks to show how all collective image of Iceland have been interpreted in the history of representations. To meet the deficit of researches on Iceland and its representations, it will combine contextualized analysis of a literary corpus (travel stories and scientific articles) and an iconographic corpus (universal cosmographies) containing engravings and maps, to understand how it was possible to perceive a population and a territory that had long been designated as outside Europe

This study intends to explain how the travel guides Guia Prático, Histórico e sentimental da Cidade do Recife, by Gilberto Freyre, and Bahia de Todos os Santos, by Jorge Amado, could built a kind of political and cultural project to Recife and Salvador, respectively. On this purpose, this work starts from a reflection about foreign travelers reports about Brazil and its contributions to the formation of a picturesque look at the country, a kind view that would have influenced forcefully the construction of Brazilian national identity, in the nineteenth century . Otherwise , we try to understand how Amado‘s and Freyre‘s travels would have reflected in the composition of their guides. From the travelogue, created by a writer who is also a traveller, maybe we could think about a host-writer, that offers to the turist-reader some new elements to compose the urban imagination, wich would take part of his viewing in a real visit. The itineraries proposed by the authors also have marks of their respective ideological projects, part of a specific political and cultural context, situated between the 1930s and 1940s. So, looks like the cultural regionalism and marxist ideology punctuate the travelguides of both writers. In the intertwining of all these elements, it would be possible to check the creative process behind some topics that make up the so-called order of city signs, understood as the symbolic dimension that dialogues with the physical materiality of landscaped sets and landmarks as elements wich acts in the local identity. Thus, it would be possible to understand the approach that the authors conduct of allegedly tourist elements, such as the nature and architecture of these cities destination, in a written deviation from reports and travel guides produced by then. Rather, Amado and Freyre raise the foreground human occupation of such destinations, which is realized as a source of a specific culture that values local identity.

Full textThe history of the Suez canal is a field of study that is still as alive and sensitive as ever, one that elicits mixed feelings. It is the story of its symbolism and the fantasies and projections that have sprung from it that is studied through a heretofore-unexamined literary and iconographical corpus. The originality of this research lies in its multiple approaches and the number of works assembled, which enables one to step out of a narrow chronology of the digging of the canal. It seeks to go beyond the restrictive vision of an endeavour that cannot be considered French colonial action yet is shot through with an ideology of conquest. It brings a fresh approach to the representation of orientalist travel. The artistic heritage born of this universal public work finally poses the question of its reception and how its memory is shared between East and West, with as much at stake today as ever

Doctoral dissertation The aesthetics of journalistic travelogue reportage among the two world wars in Serbian literature, by interpretative and comparative methods determines the existence of aesthetic intentions in this genre, on the example of texts written by the leading writers of the Serbian avant-garde Miloš Crnjanski, Rastko Petrović, Stanislav Vinaver, as well as Rade Drainac and some other traditional writers like Dragiša Vasić, Stanislav Krakow and Grigorije Božović. Contrary to the documentary-factual (reporting) level of meaning of travelogue reportages, a deeper, fictional and poetic-connotative layer is revealed, which links them with the literary system. The analysis of conceptual, poetic, structural-formalistic and linguistically-stylistic characteristics of the representative texts of this genre determines the methods of aesthetization that introduce them into the literary system - expressed subjectivity, literary and intertextuality. The dissertation points to the significance of this sub-genre of the travelogue in the avant-garde process of stratifying the genres, as well as its contribution to the spreading of the literary field in the new communication and reception field in the expansion - the daily newspapers. Intertextual, intermedial and intercultural dialogue of this type of texts is analyzed. The results of the work can be applied in historical, sociological and comparative research of the among the two world wars epoch in Serbian literature, as well as in the journalistic research of the genre of the reportage.

Full textIn many books, articles, conferences, we can read, hear, notice that gaming is helping the socialization process, that games are socializing tools and that is the reason why video games could be “good” for individuals (Greenfield, 1994 ; Taylor, 2002 ; Gee, 2003). But what is that socialization? What does this specific socialization is bringing to the overall understanding of the evolution of individuals in our societies? In one word: what is the video-ludological socialization? The concept of socialization is widely used by many disciplines such as Sociology, Social Psychology, Communication Sciences, Media Studies, Game Studies and Educational Studies and so forth. Socialization, which is the social process that makes a subject become a social being, is a key concept for understanding society and its functioning. That is why I scrutinize video-ludological socialization in this dissertation. To cast light on benefits of this specific socialization, no game is better than one simulating life which is also very popular: The Sims. For my research I overlooked praxis of teenagers gaming and how they utilize the gameplay to experiment social behaviours. In this thesis, I propose to explain what video gaming is bringing more than usual play by presenting findings of this study carried out in two steps with 180 teenagers from 12 to 16 years old. This video-ludological socialization, befalling through interacting, is part of the main socialization process which lasts during all the lifespan of individuals (Berger & Luckmann, 1966). In my research, I demonstrated that gaming with The Sims channels the video-ludological socialization process and that gaming plays an active role in gamers’ social lives

Mark Twain is generally known for his novels about African-Americans, but actually, he is also a significant travel writer and active Anti-Imperialist during the age of American expansion overseas. The thesis focuses on his traveling encounters with the Others, especially the East. By chronologically displaying his changing writing styles when representing the Others and analyzing these representations with the history of American expansion, I present Twain’s quest for an ideal American identity as well as his reflections on the suitable relationship between Americans and the Others during his journeys. Based on the textual evidence, I propose that Twain’s traveling experiences are of significance among various factors contributing to his anti-imperialist thoughts in the late years. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One discusses Twain’s first experiences traveling abroad during the 1860s. His lectures on Hawaii and the Middle East images in Innocents Abroad (1869) serve as his earliest representations of Others. Chapter Two focuses on Twain’s encounters with and descriptions of Chinese laborers in American West, his writing style and narrative tone having changed when representing Chinese Americans. Chapter Three deals with Twain’s travelogues about India in Following the Equator (1897), in which Twain develops a fresh perspective to admire the culture of Others. Chapter Four presents Twain’s anti-imperialist thoughts as the legacy of his former traveling experiences. Following Mark Twain’s steps and exploring his traveling representations on the Others, the thesis displays his transforming thoughts and charts out his trajectory of growth, connecting Twain’s racial concerns, travel literatures and anti-imperialist career, trying to provide an all-round perspective on the writer.

Trip planning is an important and time-consuming step for backpackers. Most research focuses on finding the travel sequence from different data sources such as blog, photos and GPS. Although these approaches can recommend some popular travel sequences for a tourist, but tourist’s place preferences and temporal constraints are not considered. In this thesis, we propose an approach for personalized trip planning which takes tourist’s preference and temporal constraint into consideration. In the proposed approach, first the place names are extracted from travelogues with the aid of the Wikipedia. Then the travel sequences are extracted from travelogues. Based on the relationship of mutual reinforcement between the authority of a place and the hub of a travelogue author, the authority of each place is derived. Moreover, the stay time of each place is estimated from the information of travel photos of a web album. Finally, based on the user specified place preference and temporal constraints, this thesis presents the algorithms to arrange a personalized trip for a user. The experiments show that the place name extraction achieves 92% precision and 100% recall. For the estimation of place stay time, the error is 3.16% compared with the ground truth collected from well-known backpacker site.

In Chinese history, there were always overseas people travelling to China, including Japanese sinologists, many of whom had recorded their impressions of China by composing travelogues. Considering the political implication and the genre application of this kind of materials, this research adopts the term "travelogues about China" to generalize all these records. The time period to be discussed in this research project is the whole Meiji era, namely, from 1868 to 1912, less than half a century, corresponding roughly to the late Qing period. These two countries had undergone tremendous but reversed revolutions during this period. That is to say, when Japan made progress everyday, China, on the other hand, was in an apparent state of decline. Travelogues about China 150 years ago provide people nowadays with a new research angle to comprehend and enter the late Qing history from Japanese sinologists’ perspectives.
Previous research about on Japanese travelogues about China in Chinese during the Meiji Period focused on historical descriptions of Sino-Japanese political relationships, however, the value of cultural exchange and transformation of knowledge between literary elites from both of these two countries remain to be discussed. This research plans to focus on Takezoe Shin’ichirō’s San’un Kyōu Nikki (A Diary of Clouds Hanging between the Mountains and Rain in the Ravines), Oka Senjin’s Kanko Kiyū (Travel Reports for Sightseeing) and Yamamoto Ken’s Enzan Sosui Kiyū (Travel Reports for the Mountains of North China and the Rivers of South China), which were regarded as the three most representative Japanese travelogues about China in Chinese. Respectively, they represented Japanese travel writing about China in the early, the middle and the late Meiji period and indicated that the ending of the traditional Japanese travelogues about China in Chinese was approaching. In addition, they also had a profound impact on the following Japanese travel literature about China. The genre of travelogue also exercised an invisible and formative influence on Japanese views of China in the modern era. All of these three sinologists were educated in the old style and had deep backgrounds of traditional Chinese learning. Through writing, they expressed the distance between imagination and reality after experiencing China for themselves, and various recorded aspects of the late Qing’s social politics and civil life. They played an important role in modern Sino-Japanese cultural exchange and transformation of knowledge. It will also discuss modern Sino-Japanese literati cultural and book exchange, transformation of knowledge and other issues centered on the practice of conversations by writing Chinese. This research hopes to return to the late Qing and reflect on China through its neighbors’ perspectives.
