Abstract:
The year 1998 marks the seven-hundredth anniversary of the initial composition of the book associated with Marco Polo, Le devisament dou monde. As the first European to claim that he had been to China and back (not to mention that he had travelled extensively elsewhere in Asia), Polo has become a household name. He has been credited with the introduction of noodles into Italy and of spaghetti into China. With perhaps greater warrant, he has been cited as an authority onȔinter aliaȔthe capital of the Mongol Great Khan Qubilai, on the Mongol postal relay system, on the trade in horses across the Arabian Sea, and on political conditions on the north-west frontier of India in the mid thirteenth century. The Marco Polo bibliography published in 1986 contained over 2,300 items in European languages alone.

Abstract:
Marco Polo's book — The Travels, The Description of the World, II Milione, or whatever we prefer to call it — is unquestionably the best known of all contemporary sources on that unprecedented historical phenomenon, the Mongol Empire of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. That is not to say that it is by any means the best source. As history, it cannot compare, for example, with Rashīd al-Dīn's Jāmi' al-tawārīkh, and as a European travel account (if that is what it is), it is not remotely in the same class as Friar William of Rubruck's Itinerarium. Nevertheless, while Friar William may have been completely forgotten and Chinggis Khan remembered only as someone a political reactionary can, by dint of great effort, get himself (or herself, one should hasten to add) to the right of, there are many who know at least something about Marco Polo: perhaps principally the fact that he went to China — as almost everyone has hitherto supposed that he did.

Abstract:
This article will shed new light on the already crowded area of Marco Polo research, by examining the perspective of Polo, his direct observation of Kublai Khan and Yuan China, as revealed inThe Travels of Marco Polo. The paper analyses the sources of Polo’s perspective on the people he encountered on his travels in foreign lands. It argues that Polo’s ideas were shaped by his cultural background, personal experience and his own interests. Then it examines how the work presents Kublai Khan himself, as well as the Yuan empire’s monetary system, its waterway trade and its ethnic policy. The result of this investigation shows that Polo was an acute observer; he pointed out occasions of misrule despite his adoration of Kublai Khan.

Abstract:
As the first European to claim that he travelled to China and back, Marco Polo is a celebrated traveller who described the multicultural society of Eurasia in the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries ad. However, his famed account, the Travels of Marco Polo, contains many unsolved mysteries which have generated discussion among historians, while an archaeological approach has been even less convincing because the material that may link to Marco Polo is very rare. A recent re-analysis of Chinese ceramics from a wide geographical area ranging from southern China to the Indian Ocean provides some archaeological support: it suggests that a Chinese porcelain jar housed in the Treasury of San Marco in Venice dates to the era of Marco Polo and is associated with his journey to China.

Abstract:
Many foreign scientists and researchers have classified and defined the translation strategies in many different ways, and Mongolian translators and scientists have also proposed many versions of the definition. When translating any work, it is important to preserve the source text in the target language, taking into account the thoughts and positions of the author, without losing the content and meaning, and for this, the translator needs to use a large variety of strategies. This time, we have considered the assignment, classification, and use of translation strategies terms with examples of translation works. Analyzing the translation of “Travels of Marco Polo”, focusing mainly on the historical source, we aimed to analyze whether there are selective strategies, and how the meaning of the source text was captured by identifying the commonly used strategies of the translato.

Abstract:
Marco Polo’s Le Devisement du Monde (end of the thirteenth century) is one of the earliest, longest and more detailed travelogues of the Middle Ages. Widely read, the text not only describes the travels of its protagonist, but equally furnishes a comprehensive overview of Mongolian culture, society and territories. This article analyses the categories Marco Polo uses in order to describe the Khan’s realm and his exercise of power. The author rarely uses the notion of emperor in his narrative, although he clearly recognises the Khan’s claim to universal rule. The reasons behind this reluctance can be explained in several ways. First, Marco Polo became acquainted with the main languages in the regions under Mongolian rule; it might thus have seemed natural to him to use the ‘correct’ titles. Second, the French vernacular word ‘empire’ might have been reserved, in his mind, for the rulers of the ‘Roman Empire’ (in the Latin West and/or the Greek East). Finally, it seems that Marco Polo sought to ascribe to the Khans a kind of power and authority that surpassed even the might of the emperors in Europe, and this specificity could best be expressed by using a Mongolian title that, finally, was not entirely synonymous with the notion of empereur. All in all, these observations imply that the Devisement du Monde can be read not only as a travel narrative, but also as a treatise on the understanding of imperial power.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to present the results of research undertaken on a wooden box that holds an important historical book: a hand Bible handwritten in the thirteenth century. Tradition connects this Bible to the name of Marco Polo (Venice, 1254–1324), who was supposedly the owner—the book possibly accompanied him on his travels (1262 and 1271) to China. The Bible is of fine workmanship and written on thin parchment, and its container—along with a yellow silk cloth—are preserved in the ancient and prestigious Laurentian Library in Florence. The manuscript was in very poor condition and was being restored during the period of study (2011). Surveys were carried out to determine the place and period of manufacture of the box, and to determine if it was contemporary to or later than the manuscript it contained or whether it was made in China or Europe. An additional aim of the work was to demonstrate that a fast and inexpensive in situ survey under imperfect time and space conditions was possible using in-depth observation and simple tools as well as a portable microscope, all performed without sampling. During the restoration process, a team of experts used instruments helpful in determining the chemical composition of the paper and related ink. Other specialists studied the paleography of the text. The results indicate that the Bible is definitely from the same period as Marco Polo. Nothing excludes the possibility that Marco Polo may have seen it or lived not too far from this manuscript, which traveled in a small wooden box, wrapped in a precious yellow silk cloth.

Abstract:
The present essay proposes a reflection on the work known in the italian tradition as Il Milione, which was written in Genoa, in 1298, by Marco Polo and Rustichello da Pisa. The famous work shared with the world the knowledge acquired by the venetian explorer during his stay in the Kublai Khan\'s court, the Great Khan of the Tatar Empire. In the first chapter of this research, some structural elements of the work are analyzed, such as the narrator, the co-authoring (this theme was considered essential for the study of the polo-rustichelian work only in the 20th century) and the genre question. In the second chapter, the liaisons between the work, the Literary Wonderful proposed by Tzvetan Todorov and the Medieval Wonderful proposed by Jacques Le Goff are explored.

Abstract:
This study depicts the diffusion and the reception of the Book of Marco Polo from the beginning of the 14th century to the time of the Great Discoveries. During those two centuries, this text has been translated many times and in many languages, which attests to its diffusion in a wide part of Europe and in various social and cultural milieus. The examination of the remaining 141 manuscripts, of mentions in inventaries or libraries catalogues, as well as the analysis of the way by which the Devisement du monde was used in other works, show that this text was widely diffused and that it was copiously read and used. The first part studies the translations and different versions by which the text was spread. The second part deals with the diffusion and the reception in various Medieval European places, in various social milieus and according to some contexts, as for example the reception by Italian domenican friars or the use made by chroniclers. Geographical and cartographical uses of Marco Polo’s Book are analysed in the third part, which ends with the question of the influence of this text upon the Great Discoveries

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The main goal of this dissertation is to propose a new reading and approach of Marco Polo’s Travels, also known as the Devisement du monde, the Description of the World or Il Milione. This study is based both on Marco Polo’s description of people living on the other side of the world and on the critical reception of his book. When Marco Polo left Venice, the prevailing opposition between West and East was mainly grounded in the duality opposing Christians and Saracens. However, through his travels and during his stay at Kubilai Khan’s Mongol court, the young man embraced more complex issues relating to religious beliefs and practices related to philosophical movements barely known in the Western world.“The observer of religions”, as historian P. Ménard calls him, seems to be fascinated by the cultural and religious diversity he encounters during his stay in the Mongol empire. So, many differences with his own culture were difficult to absorb and to report. In this study, we particularly focus on the many versions and translations of these descriptions, written in a context of political and religious turmoil. Following the works of C. Dutschke and C. Gadrat on the reception theory applied to the Travels, this diachronic research is founded on ten manuscripts and six editions dating from the early 14th century until the late 19th century. The impact of Marco Polo’s account is not studied here through the circulation of his Travels or according to the number of authors mentioning it in their own writings, but is rather established in relation to the text itself, along with the paratext, miniatures and illustrations. All these elements provide valuable information concerning its reception through ages, and about the expectations of the potential audience, which also evolved over time. All the versions and translations of our corpus have been digitized, and thanks to text analysis tools, we were able to reconcile close reading and data processing while analyzing the text

Abstract:
In the era of universal digitalization and always-connected consumers, companies are expected to offer pervasive, uninterrupted and friendly customer care services. To this end, the recent advances in natural language understanding, enable the creation of artificial attendants, called "chatbots", that were once confined within the domain of science-fiction. In this thesis, I will describe the design and implementation of a customer support chatbot for Marco Polo Airport of Venice. The main goal of the research was to design a common core able to interact 24/7 by means of different paradigms, ranging from speech to touch screens, and through different user interfaces, including mobile phones, fixed installations and physical robots roaming the terminal. This goal has been reached by exploiting modern cloud-based services and by designing a specially-crafted modular system able to interface itself with the both online information providers and legacy data sources supplied by the airport ICT infrastructure. This thesis will describe both the engineering process, from the prerequisites analysis to a functional description of the devised architecture, and the real-world effectiveness of the system, presenting an experimental evaluation of a full-working prototype.

Abstract:
In 1982, the Italian television network RAI produced a TV series by Giuliano Montaldo on the travels of the Venetian merchant Marco Polo. Broadcast in forty-six countries, the Emmy Award-winning cinematic project, which involved partners from the United States, Japan, Germany, and France, stood as the first film co-production between Italy and China and represented a relevant step in the consolidation of the Sino-Italian friendship after the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1970. This paper aims to research the transnational dynamics enacted by Marco Polo during the Sino-Italian co-production and presents the making of the TV series in China from ideation to distribution. The study includes an original interview with the director Montaldo (2022).

Abstract:
Marco Polo and his knowledge of Asian languages Marco Polo (1254–1324) claimed (or rather his editors) that he could speak (and read) in other languages in ad dition to his own, at least five. Although he spoke little Chinese or rather not, he spoke a number of languages used in East Asia at the time – most likely Turkic (in the Kuman dialect: (lingua) tartara; tartaresce; tartaresche), which was also spoken among Mongols, Arabized Per sians, Uighurs and perhaps even he knew Mongolian. While communicating with the Great Khan, Marco Polo was almost certainly able to speak and write Mongolian. Marco Polo usually referred to Chinese local names in Persian, so it is very likely that he spoke Persian and was able to read the Arabic script. In addition, Persian was the lingua franca used throughout the region at the time even at Kublai Khan’s court. The paper brings some particular examples from Marco’s Mss.

Abstract:
Installed 160 miles South of New Orleans in 1300 m of water, the Marco Polo Tension Leg Platform is subjected to an extensive monitoring campaign to benchmark design data and methods. The purpose of the full scale monitoring campaign is to evaluate the design in operation exposed to hurricane and loop-current conditions. Interests comprise the high and low frequency modes of motion, the fatigue loading of the platform and the dynamic behavior of the tendons and risers with focus on vortex induced vibrations. To evaluate these results wind, wave and current conditions are closely monitored. The monitoring system was in operation during the passage of hurricanes Ivan, Katrina and Rita. Although Marco Polo was extremely close to the center of these severe hurricanes, no significant damage was inflicted to the platform, even though wind speeds in excess of 138 mph and maximum wave heights over 28 m were measured. However, very valuable data was collected on the wave, wind, current, as well as on the response of the TLP during the Hurricane conditions.

Abstract:
The Marco Polo TLP, located in Green Canyon Block 608 in 4300 ft water depth exports oil and gas through 12-inch oil and 18-inch gas export SCRs that are connected to Marco Polo 14-inch oil and 18inch/20-inch gas export pipelines. Following completion of the installation of the 14-inch oil export pipeline and during the installation of the 12-inch oil export SCR on the seabed (with about 3,000 ft or 77 SCR pipe joints still to go), the operation had to be abandoned due to bad weather and the SCR pipe lowered to the seabed. During the abandonment operation, a high tension event occurred, causing the transition joint between the 14-inch and 12-inch pipes to slide by about 820 ft toward the TLP. This would have the effect of changing the touchdown position along the SCR and consequently the Three Layer Polyethylene abrasion coating would not be located at the at the touchdown to perform its function. In order to move the SCR touchdown area at least partially to the TLPE region, it was decided that four extra joints would be welded to the SCR resulting in the SCR departure angle to changing from 12 degrees to 10 degrees. This paper presents the methodology used for the original design of the oil export SCR and the design robustness, flexibility and margins that allowed for the design to be modified in the last minutes without compromising the integrity of the SCR. The paper also discuss the steps taken to ensure that the modified design is acceptable and within the code requirements. Some strength and fatigue results are presented.

Abstract:
Accurate assessment of cumulative tendon fatigue is of importance for evaluation of the overall design life of TLPs. This cumulative fatigue damage can be derived from direct tendon load measurements. However, in some cases the quality of the tendon load measurements decreases or direct measurements are not available and assessment of cumulative tendon fatigue is not possible. An alternative approach to derive cumulative tendon fatigue is presented in this paper, based on the measured accelerations of the topsides. The quality of this approach is verified using data measured on board the Marco Polo TLP. To investigate the dynamic behavior of a Tension Leg Platform (TLP) in real life conditions and therewith provide insight in the physical mechanisms, as well as data to verify and validate the current design methods, a full-scale monitoring campaign on the Marco Polo Tension Leg Platform (TLP) has been conducted as part of a Joint Industry Project (JIP). Within this JIP measurements of the loads in four tendons have been collected continuously since June 2004. In addition to the tendon loads the wave frequency TLP motions and wave elevations were also recorded. The alternative approach to derive the cumulative tendon fatigue is verified using Marco Polo measurements recorded during 2005 and 2006. From the Marco Polo TLP motions recorded during the two year period the axial loads were calculated in all tendons. Statistical and spectral comparisons were made between the calculated and measured tendon loads. Based on those results a frequency dependent correction function was computed and applied on the computed tendon loads. Next the fatigue consumption based on the corrected calculated tendon loads was computed and verified with the fatigue consumption based on the actual measured tendon loads. This comparison provides the accuracy of the fatigue calculation when the computations are based on the measured TLP motions.
