Full textThe present essay proposes a reflection on the work known in the italian tradition as Il Milione, which was written in Genoa, in 1298, by Marco Polo and Rustichello da Pisa. The famous work shared with the world the knowledge acquired by the venetian explorer during his stay in the Kublai Khan\'s court, the Great Khan of the Tatar Empire. In the first chapter of this research, some structural elements of the work are analyzed, such as the narrator, the co-authoring (this theme was considered essential for the study of the polo-rustichelian work only in the 20th century) and the genre question. In the second chapter, the liaisons between the work, the Literary Wonderful proposed by Tzvetan Todorov and the Medieval Wonderful proposed by Jacques Le Goff are explored.

Full textThis study depicts the diffusion and the reception of the Book of Marco Polo from the beginning of the 14th century to the time of the Great Discoveries. During those two centuries, this text has been translated many times and in many languages, which attests to its diffusion in a wide part of Europe and in various social and cultural milieus. The examination of the remaining 141 manuscripts, of mentions in inventaries or libraries catalogues, as well as the analysis of the way by which the Devisement du monde was used in other works, show that this text was widely diffused and that it was copiously read and used. The first part studies the translations and different versions by which the text was spread. The second part deals with the diffusion and the reception in various Medieval European places, in various social milieus and according to some contexts, as for example the reception by Italian domenican friars or the use made by chroniclers. Geographical and cartographical uses of Marco Polo’s Book are analysed in the third part, which ends with the question of the influence of this text upon the Great Discoveries

Full textThe main goal of this dissertation is to propose a new reading and approach of Marco Polo’s Travels, also known as the Devisement du monde, the Description of the World or Il Milione. This study is based both on Marco Polo’s description of people living on the other side of the world and on the critical reception of his book. When Marco Polo left Venice, the prevailing opposition between West and East was mainly grounded in the duality opposing Christians and Saracens. However, through his travels and during his stay at Kubilai Khan’s Mongol court, the young man embraced more complex issues relating to religious beliefs and practices related to philosophical movements barely known in the Western world.“The observer of religions”, as historian P. Ménard calls him, seems to be fascinated by the cultural and religious diversity he encounters during his stay in the Mongol empire. So, many differences with his own culture were difficult to absorb and to report. In this study, we particularly focus on the many versions and translations of these descriptions, written in a context of political and religious turmoil. Following the works of C. Dutschke and C. Gadrat on the reception theory applied to the Travels, this diachronic research is founded on ten manuscripts and six editions dating from the early 14th century until the late 19th century. The impact of Marco Polo’s account is not studied here through the circulation of his Travels or according to the number of authors mentioning it in their own writings, but is rather established in relation to the text itself, along with the paratext, miniatures and illustrations. All these elements provide valuable information concerning its reception through ages, and about the expectations of the potential audience, which also evolved over time. All the versions and translations of our corpus have been digitized, and thanks to text analysis tools, we were able to reconcile close reading and data processing while analyzing the text

This paper analyzes the Program for Strengthening Health Care in Secondary and Tertiary Levels - Cofinancing Hospitals Polo, under management of the Secretariat of Health of the State of Ceará - SESA, checking the clarity of purpose and consistency of the proposed sequencing of elements: resources, activities, products and results, within the logic of Matrix Management by results - GPR SESA. There's intervention policy regarding normative SUS, decentralization and regionalization focused on expanding access through the proposal to increase the supply of services and public health actions, rendered so resolute in the regional population of Ceará. Notes deficiency in the way of calculating the indicator adopted to measure the achievement of expected results; disability criteria for inclusion in the health unit in the program and evaluation of clinical and conveniadas small number of health professionals as complicating the expansion of services health. The data were obtained in SESA worked and Strategy Research Institute and the State of Ceará - IPECE and consist of the value of the co-financing of hospitals Polo, Polo cofinanced number of hospitals, percentages and numbers of patient transfers regulated by the Central State Regulatory System public Health - CRESUS, provision of public health in Ceará and the number of hospitals with Polo cost system deployed.

Full textThe issue of the thesis is the Catalan Version (K) of the Devisement du Monde by Marco Polo. An abbreviated version, K is preserved in a Catalan copy called Kc (Florence, Ricc. 2048), a French translation named Kf (Rome, Vatican Library, Ott. lat. 2207) and an Aragonese translation called Ka (Madrid, Escorial, Z. I. 2). The thesis presents an introduction divided into five chapters. The first chapter contains the description of the manuscripts; the second chapter develops a stemma codicum, identifies the archetype Kx and defines its errors and language. The third chapter focuses on the translation mistakes, which demonstrate that the Catalan version had a Franco-Italian model. The fourth chapter studies K as text summary, highlighting its gaps on the basis of a comparison with the reference version F (Paris, BNF, fr. 1116). The fifth chapter, finally, proposes a localization of K in the general stemma codicum of the work. After the introduction, the thesis presents the edition of the three copies, each one accompanied by a linguistic analysis. The thesis ends with the critical translation, in modern French, of the Catalan Version K

Full textThe recent progress of the uncooled micro-bolometer technology has lead to larger detector matrices (1024*768 pixels), with smaller pixel sizes (17 µm) and a higher sensitivity although it is an uncooled technology (NETD<60 mK @300 K). The objective of this thesis is to study uncooled micro-bolometer detectors in order to assess their performance for imagery and spectroscopy within the framework of a space mission towards small bodies of the solar system, including the Marco Polo R mission. I have studied these detectors through the example of the Nano640Etm detector of the Ulis society, which represents well the currently available uncooled micro-bolometer technology. I have measured its signal stability through time, the detector's matrix homogeneity, and the influence of various operating parameters (focal plane temperature, integration time of the pixels, gain). The detector's response is linear as a function of the scene temperature to the power of 4. The results of this characterization allowed me to measure the detector's NETD within this experiment. Then, I tested the Nano640Etm detector's ability to perform calibrated radiometric images in order to estimate the maximum calibration error for one, two, or three calibration points chosen differently within the observed temperature range. Lastly, I assessed the detector's performances for dispersive spectroscopic measurements, using its signal to noise ratio, as a function of the observation wavelength, the scene temperature, and the spectral resolution. The results of these tests are very positive

Full textThis dissertation aims to categorize the communication strategies (CS) found in the short film in Italian Le Avventure di Marco Polo, conducted in 2011 by students of the 6th grade of elementary education at a private school in the city of Atibaia, who participates of the project Movies in Italian (PFI). We will present the global operating model for teaching languages (MOGEL), proposed by Almeida Filho, to demonstrate how the interaction of its main levels occurs within the PFI. We will seek to justify PFI as a communicative project through the postulate that the learner autonomy, as recommended by the communicative language teaching is enhanced by the engagement projects (project work) and tasks (tasks). The work by projects and tasks put students at the center of educational activities and are related to new-media audiovisual communicative scenarios, accessible through technological tools that are already part of everyday life of the new generations. During the PFI 2011 presentation, we introduce the concept of guided speech, a term coined to define the oral productions resulting from various types of support we provide to students during filming, seeking to assist them to produce in Italian facing a variety of communicative problems, thus favoring the use of CS. The analysis corpus consists of utterances collected in the short film and is divided into two parts, the first of which includes productions filming in emerging gaps inserted into the script, devised to provide moments of spontaneous interaction among students, and the second includes oral production statements regarding the script, based on the previous written text rehearsed by students. Regarding the CS literature, we present three theorists: Tarone (1977), Faerch & Kasper (1983), and Poulisse (1993), discussing their contributions and justifying our choice of Poulisse lexical taxonomy to categorizing the two parts of corpus. Our results seem to demonstrate that learners use also the CS in the script speeches and in the moments of spontaneous interaction, underscoring the validity of questioning as one of the main criteria for use of the CS there, not in the traditional interaction. Moreover, the corpus collected seems to point out the importance often neglected, of the transfer language to constitute the learner interlanguage and in the usage of the CS. It also seems that the contact with more than one LE, as with students of PFI, can encourage the development of their strategic competence, increasing the possibilities of language transfer and sources for creating lexical items as well as their resources to solve communication problems.

Full textAmong the many consequences of the formation of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, one of the most significant was the emergence of a truly integrated and interconnected Eurasia. Under the aegis of the Mongols, trade, cultural and religious exchanges between the different Eurasian civilisations intensify, and long-distance travel becomes more and more common. The first Western travellers thus reach East Asia. This is the case of John of Plano Carpini and William of Rubruck, who both travel to Mongolia, as well as of Marco Polo and Odoric of Pordenone, who spent years in China. Their travel accounts testify to the Latin west’s encounter with a wide, complex world, about which until then almost nothing was known. Yet, in the very same period, the Persianate world came to have even closer ties to East Asia. Literary works such as ʿAṭā Malik Juwaynī’s History of the World Conqueror and Rashīd al-Dīn’s Universal History testify to their efforts to integrate this space into the mental geography of Persianate intellectuals. Drawing on these sources, as well as to a wider corpus of Latin, French, Italian, Arabic and Persian works on East Asia of different genres, from travel literature to historiography and geography, a comparative study of the representation of this space in the Latin West and in the Persianate world in the Mongol period can be undertaken. The dissertation thus discusses the Western and Persianate representation of East Asia in fields as diverse as geography, religion, languages, and urban and civil life

Narrated by Marco Polo himself and written by Rustichello da Pisa, The Travel of Marco Polo is about Marco Polo’s travel experience to the Far East. Because this book has been manually copied, translated, added, deleted, and modified from generation to generation, the truthfulness of the content of this book has been questioned continuously, which leaves room for imagination. Scholars worldwide have investigated and verified about various events such as the year Marco Polo went to China, the names of those places and people as well as the historical events mentioned in the book, and their findings are stunning. The author discussed those descriptions on Chinese southern cities in The Travel of Marco Polo in six chapters of this thesis. In the first chapter, the author presented the study motivation, purposes, methods, as well as a summery of findings by preceding scholars. In the second chapter, the author introduced the life of Marco Polo and provided some background information related to that era. The author also discussed the book The Travel of Marco Polo and its translation status. In the third chapter, the author compared those descriptions on the southern cities in The Travel of Marco Polo with chorographic literature to investigate the writer’s perspective and approach for writing this book. In Chapter 4, the author discussed descriptions of three types of products mentioned in The Travel of Marco Polo: dietary materials, bowls, and porcelain, and carried out cultural analysis. In Chapter 5, the author discussed business activities in those southern cities based on metropolitan economy and harbor trading these two aspects in attempt to confirm what Marco Polo stated about China—a prosperous empire of the Far East. In Chapter Six, the author summarized the previous discussion and brought to a conclusion. The author also indicated the contribution of Marco Polo’s descriptions of the southern cities and some issues for further research.

Full textIn his reconstruction of the tradition of Marco Polo’s “Milione”, L. F. Benedetto describes a subgroup of witnesses belonging to the Venetian family VA consisting of some fifteenth-century manuscripts and a set of prints of the XV - XVII (L.F. BENEDETTO Marco Polo, Il Milione. Prima edizione integrale, Firenze, 1928, p. CXX - CXXVI). In addition to the witnesses listed by Benedetto, other literary critics has identified more witnesses attributed to the group in question: in particular ms. 488 (ant. E.I.10) belonging to Teresian Library of Mantua (See BERTOLUCCI PIZZORUSSO, Recuperi (e smarrimenti) di manoscritti veneti del Milione, in Scritti in onore di G. B. Pellegrini, Pisa, Pacini, 1983, pp. 357-70) and, most recently, ms. Palatino 318 of the Palatina Library in Parma (C.W. Dutschke, Francesco Pipino and the manuscripts of Marco Polo's 'Travels', UMI Ann Arbor 1993) Therefore, at the current state of research, the group in question appears to be composed by five manuscripts and one early-printed edition (in my PhD Thesis Ch. II Part One): 1. Lu: ms. 1296 della Biblioteca Comunale di Lucca; 2. Se: ms. “Seminario11” della Institución Colombina di Siviglia 3. Mt: ms. 488 (già E.I.10) della Biblioteca Comunale di Mantova 4. Ma: ms. It.VI.208 (5881) della Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. 5. Ss: L’incunabolo: Marco Polo da Veniesia dele meravigliose cose del mondo, impresso in Venetia per Zoanne Baptista da Sessa milanese del Mccccxcvi. 6. Pa: ms. Palatino 318 della Biblioteca Palatina di Parma. The group was studied by Angelica Valentinetti Mendi, who provided in her PhD thesis an edition of Lu and Se, proposing the relationship between them, and published the text of Ma and Ss as ‘ appendix’. (ANGÉLICA VALENTINETTI MENDI, Una familia veneta del libro de Marco Polo, Madrid, Universidad Complutense, 1992). Starting point of my PhD Thesis are these bibliography considerations (Ch. I Part One). My work consists in a systematic collation of the six witnesses, confronting them with the mains versions of Marco Polo’s masterpiece (in particular ms. F and ms. VA3). These results are summarized in Chapter III of Part One. It has been possible to establish the relationship between these codes and to draw a more precise stemma codicum than that proposed by the critical literature before me. (Cfr. in part. VALENTINETTI MENDI, op. cit., p. 70; M. POLO, Il «Milione» veneto: ms. CM 211 della Biblioteca civica di Padova, a cura di A. BARBIERI E A. ANDREOSE, con la collaborazione di M. MAURO, premessa di L. RENZI, Venezia, Marsilio, 1999, p. 42). Furthermore, in the II Part of my work, I offer the interpretive edition of Ma and Pa, still unpublished, and a new edition of Ss and Mt.
