Silicani, Christian. "Le roman d'aventure et le 'roman d'outre-mer' de langue allemande, de Charles Sealsfield à B. Traven." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018USPCA004/document.

Full text
Abstract:
There are many German travel stories as well as works of fiction focusing on overseas territories, in the first place on the United States of America. These texts that were written in the course of the nineteenth century and during the first half of the twentieth century represent a noteworthy phenomenon that has been little commented on and lends itself well to a historical approach. Indeed, these pieces of writing accompany, comment on and vilify the German mass migration to the American continent, especially to North America. The present work attempts to account for the German adventure novel the plot of which takes place overseas. In so doing it tries to define the specificity of the German perspective. Twelve novels have been selected that were written by several german-speaking authors very different from one another: the German Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816-1872), Karl May (1842-1912), Ernst Friedrich Löhndorff (1899-1976), the Austro-American Karl Postl aka Charles Sealsfield (1793-1864), The Austrian Franz Kafka (1883-1924), the Germano-Mexican B. Traven (1882-1969). Following an introductory chapter dealing with the horizon of aspirations in nineteenth-century Germany are eleven chapters each devoted to the study of one selected novel. The analysis of these works shows some striking features that belong to the genre either at the level of the aesthetics, logic, set of themes and ideological patterns or at the level of axiological confrontations between a rational, civilized world and the so-called "savageness". Other items in the study are the figure of the literary adventurer, the different approaches to the alterity phenomenon, the recurrent temptation of transgression, the insertion of the text in a pre-existent codes and stereotypes system

Full text
Abstract:
This focuses on hydrological transport in shallow catchments with topography-driven flow paths. The thesis gives new insight to kinematic pathway models for estimation of tracer discharge at the catchment outlet. A semi-analytical methodology is presented for transient travel time and age distributions referred to as "kinematic pathway approach“(KPA) that accounts for dispersion at two levels of morphological and macro-dispersion. Macro-dispersion and morphological dispersion components are reflected in KPA by assuming an effective Péclet number and topographically driven pathway length distributions, respectively. The kinematic measure of the transport, defined as a characteristic velocity of water flow through the catchment is obtained from the overall water balance in the catchment. To include transformation process in its simplest form of linear decay/degradation a framework is presented that solves one-dimensional reactive transport with numerically simulated travel times as the independent variable. The proposed KPA and coupled transport framework for quantifying tracer discharge at the shallow catchment outlet are applied to two selected catchments in Sweden. KPA is applied to modeling of a 23-year long chloride data series for the Kringlan catchment whereas the implantation of the framework for quantifying natural attenuation is illustrated for the Forsmark catchment. Numerical simulations of Forsmark catchment advective travel times are obtained by means of particle tracking using the fully-integrated flow model MIKE SHE. The KPA is found to provide reasonable estimates of tracer discharge distribution when considering the transport controlled by hillslope processes associated with short topographically driven flow paths to adjacent discharge zones, e.g. rivers and lakes. Simulated natural attenuation for Forsmark is also estimated well provided that the pathway length distribution is skewed toward short pathway lengths. This fact is indicative of the controlling impact of topography on flow path length and travel time distributions in shallow catchments. Our work has shown that the pathway (Lagrangian) methodologies are promising as predictive tools for hydrological transport.<br><p>QC 20170928</p>

Beames, Simon K. "Overseas youth expeditions : outcomes, elements, processes." Thesis, University of Chichester, 2004. http://eprints.chi.ac.uk/848/.

Full text
Abstract:
This case study examines the participant outcomes, critical elements, and processes of young people's experiences on a ten-week expedition to West Africa. A secondary aim was to explore how one expedition structure caters to the varied goals of the participants. The study's rationale lies in the limited research focusing on young people's accounts of their experiences and how outcomes in overseas youth expeditions are achieved. Symbolic interactionism provides a framework for exploring the ways in which young people construct meaning and identity from their experiences. Mead's (1934) and Cooley's (1962; 1964) work illustrate how individuals develop their 'self through interaction with expedition team-members'. Blumer (1969) helps to understand how participants are influenced by their interpretations of the physical, social, and abstract objects with which they interact. Principal data collection involved interviewing 14 young people before, during, and six months after the expedition. Secondary data were derived from informal discussion and participant observation. Interview transcripts were interpreted using a combination of phenomenology and thematic analysis. Verification relied on member checks, investigator triangulation, and peer review. The data suggest that an overseas expedition is a highly subjective experience. People came for a wide range of reasons and took away learnings with personal relevance. The principal outcomes are improved relationships with one's self, with others, and with greater society. The critical elements of the experience are living with three different and diverse groups, being self-sufficient in an unfamiliar rural environment, and participating in activities perceived as challenging and worthwhile. Participants processed their experiences through reflection, one-to-one conversations with staff, and informal dialogue with their peers. The thesis concludes that effective expeditions encourage each participant to determine their own learning. Groups comprised of people from varied backgrounds who interact in unfamiliar settings yield critical opportunities for individuals to reexamine and modify the attitudes that shape their actions. Finally, staff should ensure that participants have ample time to interpret their own experiences through unstructured reflection and informal conversation.

Konglim, Parichart. "The language of tourism advertising in five countries worst affected by the Asian Tsunami : before and after, focussing on Thailand." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2011. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/6090/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigated the use of language in the texts of the promotional brochures created for the tourist industry. The selected printed materials for the study were used in advertising the five countries most severely affected by the Asian Tsunami in 2004 (Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and the Maldives). The focus of the analysis was on the two sets of brochures of the five selected countries published by the UK’s leading travel agencies – Thomas Cook, Thomson and Kuoni before and after the disaster. The contrastive discourse analysis was applied in order to investigate the similarities and differences of linguistic features within the texts both between the two sets for each country as well as between the five selected countries. The overall results of the text analysis from the five selected countries have shown significant changes in language use. The investigation revealed that in the post-disaster set of brochures the number of destinations was broadened and their descriptions were made more vivid. The post-disaster texts represented more efforts in developing a wider range of tourism attractions and activities in order to expand the markets and increase the number as well as type of potential future tourists. The information derived from the questionnaire has revealed the potential tourists’ sensitivity to language used in promotional brochures. The results demonstrated that most respondents were aware of the change of language used before and after the Tsunami. The findings validated the hypothesis that the role of language within tourism advertising is as significant as the role of images. This has a major impact on individuals’ choosing their next holiday destination since many potential tourists still base their holiday decision-making on holiday brochures. The research has found that the role of language plays a significant role in tourism advertising representations and also has a major part as one of the marketing tools in tourism promotional strategy.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.<br>This thesis was an investigation of the causes that prevented the matching of the accounting line associated with an advance travel payment with the accounting line associated with the liquidation payment or collection for shore activities serviced by the Fleet Accounting and Disbursing Center Pacific, San Diego, CA. Utilizing a random sample of 179 standard document numbers from fiscal year 1989, the researcher concluded that the two major causes preventing the matching of an advance to the liquidation were document type code errors and execution code errors. Both types of errors are attributable to input error. The researcher identified manual inputs, multiple activity processing and inadequate management reports as the three major barriers affecting the travel reconciliation process. Recommendations designed to prevent input errors and to improve the travel accounting process were provided.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Rock cuttings are often collected for lithology and petrophysical characterization during a drilling operation. The depth origin of the sampled cuttings could be determined by calculating the lag time required for the cuttings to travel from the bit to the surface, but traditional mud logging methods may give inaccuracies of ±10-20 feet in the depth correlation due to the shuffling and settling of cuttings as they travel with drilling fluid to the surface, especially for horizontal wells. Aramco researchers have developed a technology that pulse pumps a series of barcoded tags sequentially to label drill-cuttings when they are formed during drilling without adverse impact on the drilling operation in field, and field tests demonstrated that the depth-correlation uncertainty could significantly improve to about ±2 feet. However, this technology critically relies on the efficiencies of mud tracer materials and technology of rapid detection for real-time monitoring in mud logging. To enable the determination of cuttings at various depths and times, a number of mud tags are essentially needed. Towards achieving this goal, we have developed 6 series of novel tracer materials as mud tags and analytical methods for rapid, trace level detection of these tags. The new series of nano tracer materials (NanoTags) include CompTags, MagTags, PolyTags, FluorTags, CarbTags and FiberTags, in which unique compositions or optical properties as barcoded information are incorporated. The synthesized tracer materials have controllable compatibility with either water-based mud (WBM) or oil-based mud (OBM) and have been tested in simulated mud formulation and cutting samples. Stability tests demonstrated that the tracers are stable in simulated reservoir condition with high-salinity water and crude oil at elevated temperature (~95°C). These NanoTags in drilling muds can embedded into cuttings at a drilling bit and travel with the cuttings to surface, and then be identified by optical detection and other orthogonal analyses using various detection methods at nano-gram level in the cutting samples.

Abstract:
Estimating the origin-destination travel time is a fundamental problem in many location-based services for vehicles, e.g., ride-hailing, vehicle dispatching, and route planning. Recent work has made significant progress to accuracy but they largely rely on GPS traces which are too coarse to model many personalized driving events. In this paper, we propose Customized Travel Time Estimation (CTTE) that fuses GPS traces, smartphone inertial data, and road network within a deep recurrent neural network. It constructs a link traffic database with topology representation, speed statistics, and query distribution. It also uses inertial data to estimate the arbitrary phone's pose in car, and detects fine-grained driving events. The multi-task learning structure predicts both traffic speed at public level and customized travel time at personal level. Extensive experiments on two real-world traffic datasets from Didi Chuxing have demonstrated our effectiveness.

Abstract:
Processor-in-Memory (PIM) architectures, such as the Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC), are emerging nowadays as a solution for processing large amount of data directly inside the memory. In this area, several researchers are proposing and evaluating new instructions and new PIM architectures. For such evaluations, trace-driven simulators, as the Simulator of Non-Uniform Cache Architectures (SiNUCA), are commonly used in order to model these new proposed systems. Such simulators provide fast prototyping of new architectures, while it requires the researcher to write simulation traces manually when evaluating new Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) proposals, which is an time consuming and error prone task. In this work, we propose a methodology for fast generation of simulation traces focused on HMC architecture, which consists on a high-level Intrinsics-HMC library and a modification inside the trace-generator tool from SiNUCA. Our proposal enables the researchers to write high level code in C/C++ languages using our library, which mimics the behavior of HMC instructions. These codes can be compiled and executed in traditional x86 architectures for verification. After ensure the code is correct and working, the user can use our modified version of SiNUCA-Tracer to translate HMC functions into HMC instructions know by the simulator, providing a convenient solution to generate traces and fast simulations of new PIM architectures. Results using the proposed technique applied on database application kernels show the correct translation and simulation of new HMC instructions using SiNUCA.

Abstract:
The experiments were arranged with a pulsed dye laser and a cross oven. A double-pen chart recorder simultaneously traced the two-photon excitation spectra monitored by two photomultipliers with interference filters centered at 3600 and 4300 Å, respectively. The observed two-photon transitions with a linewidth of ~0.2 Å were distributed discretely and nonuniformly and were close to the calculated values for searching the intermediate singlet-triplet mixing levels in Na2. This means that the observed signals were individually enhanced by a near-resonant mixing level. While most of the corresponding recorded lines in the two traces had coincident wavelength locations and comparable intensities, a part of the lines at the longer wavelength sides of the traces with moderate or weaker intensities appeared alternately. The upper states for the lines which only appeared in the 4300 Å trace or in both of the traces were assumed to be (2)3Π g and a higher (n)3Λ g state, respectively. Temperature and total pressure was varied. Finally, the laser beam was split into two with combined polarization situations. These aided the identification of the two- photon transitions.

Abstract:
The impacts of the U.S. transportation and electricity generation sectors include air emissions and water consumption. Information and communication technologies (ICT) such as advanced video teleconferencing have the potential to displace some activities that have historically required transportation. While ICT can reduce environmental impacts compared to transportation options in many cases, there are non-obvious environmental trade-offs associated with replacing transportation with ICT. These tradeoffs are the consequence of many factors, including the particular local electricity mix, meeting duration, number of meeting participants, travel distances, travel modes, motive transport conversion technologies, and transport fuels. Identifying and quantifying these trade-offs is the focus of this research. For this study, a nomenclature and methodology were developed to compare environmental trade-offs associated with transportation and ICT. The nomenclature was designed to facilitate side-by-side comparison of the environmental impacts of travel and ICT and to allow expansion of the nomenclature for future study. The methodology considered a variety of conversion technologies for motive transport including spark-ignition, compression-ignition, fuel cells, and electric motors. Both conventional and developing fuels were considered including gasoline, ethanol, diesel, biodiesel, natural gas, hydrogen, and electricity. Likewise, electricity consumption for ICT included both traditional and developing electricity generation technologies. Carbon dioxide emissions and water consumption for ICT were assessed for comparison with transportation in a case study that demonstrated use of this methodology by considering three distinct scenarios for a particular business meeting: 1. Two meeting attendees travel to the meeting by diesel city bus while two travel in a private vehicle. 2. All four meeting attendees travel by private vehicle powered by compressed natural gas. 3. The four meeting attendees do not travel, but instead meet their clients virtually via ICT. The case study analyzed in this manuscript considers only the water and carbon dioxide impacts, but the nomenclature developed allows future expansion for analysis of other greenhouse gases. The three scenarios revealed that, compared to short travel distances, use of ICT does not always generate fewer carbon dioxide emissions. Depending on the mode of electricity generation, travel proved to be preferable from an emissions standpoint for scenarios in which travel distances were small. However, in cases that required long distances to travel, ICT often allowed businesses and individuals to reduce their environmental impacts, especially if electric power generation in that location utilized large amounts of relatively low-emissions technologies such as hydroelectric dams, wind, solar, and nuclear. Finally, it should be noted that, in addition to comparing ICT and travel impacts, this methodology can be used to calculate the environmental tradeoffs of various transportation options when travel is a necessity.
