Abstract:
We analyzed the dense network of "Traversée de la mangrove", a novel by Maryse Condé, in order to try to make the title explicit. First, we established links between natural elements, trees, mud, salt in the mangrove and the people living in Rivière au Sel. Then, we described relations between oral and written languages, between male and female characters, and with religion. At last, we showed the originality of the author’s writing in this novel, such as mirror images (mise en abîme), relations with other texts, and poetical devices.

Abstract:
A novel about Maryse Condé's return to Guadeloupe, in which she paints thepicture of an isolated village disturbed by the death of Francis Sancher, an outsider coming from anundefined elsewhere, and who brings the population together in a funeral wake during which theparticipants let their thoughts wander, reveal secrets and question their own lives and gradually reveal the secrets of the deceased. From this polyphony in which one can detect the influence of Faulkner and a Caribbean intertextuality, Maryse Condé sets out a reflection on the Antilles identity and the different currents present in its literature (Negritude, Antillanity and Creolity) and thus affirms her independence, her detachment from theories in order to concentrate on the human. She thus captures the specific character of her island, both composite and hybrid, by renewing the concept of the rhizome defended byGlissant in a French language, which she herself admits to having “cannibalised” to express the contradictions, the errancies and the errors of a land confronted by the unknown and in search of ideals.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses two novels taking place in the Caribbean context, Traversée de la mangrove (1989), written by Maryse Condé, and Solibo Magnifique (1988), written by Patrick Chamoiseau. Focus is on the themes of identity and resistance and how these themes are represented and problematised in the novels. Some narrative aspects are also given attention, such as how the use of different narrative techniques mirrors the themes in the novels. Objecting to the French/European obsession with rationality, transparency and linearity, the novels propose other ways of expressing identity as well as writing literature. The French language, associated with Western and colonial discourses and with the ideals of Enlightenment, is used as a tool to dominate and suppress others. Identity is described in terms of rhizomatic relationships and diversity, rather than as stable entities. Opacity is a way of resisting the violence of rational descriptions and the linear, causal narrations. By refusing to tell all, and by claiming that certain things cannot be explained in rational ways, the novels problematise the act of representing and insist upon complexity. The penchant for opacity is reflected in the narration for example in the tendency to pose questions rather than provide answers for the reader.

Abstract:
This work on infidelity in the couple discusses the different sources of trouble and their consequences in the life of the couple. The different opinions of various authors on the cause of infidelity in marriage are discussed. Female education during the nineteenth century sheds light on the handicaps which led some girls in trouble because the education of the time had not prepared them to become good wives. This essay shows the image of religion in the two works: Madame Bovary and Crossing the mangrove. The question is how the authors portray religion in these works and why they adopt infidelity to save the woman of her boredom. Finally, the comparison of this boredom is made to see that in these couples even if they belong to different periods, boredom in marriage is the same. These authors made the same strategies to save the couple from their boredom. Moral and religious critics have been used to address the issue, as a Bible reading of these two works has been done.

Abstract:
This dissertation casts an aesthetic light on a selection of polyphonic novels from the Francophone contemporary canon. From the forms of feminism around the prophet of islam in Far from Madina by Assia Djebar, to the multiple voices of Créolité in Solibo Magnificent by Patrick Chamoiseau, to the forms of individualism in a Guadeloupean village in Crossing the Mangrove by Maryse Condé, these novels are involved in innovative literary strategies. Nonetheless, postcolonial studies left in the shadow the work of forms that is yet the operatory mode of literary thought. To bridge this gap, we need a narratological and stylistic analysis of the techniques of representation of speech and thought. By disentangling the forms and the stakes of the fascinating relationship that is at work between the other’s speech and narrative voices, my dissertation brings a welcomed contribution to Francophone studies as well as to narrative studies.Three major thoughts foster this research: first the concept of counterpoint of Edward Said, seen in its dialogical dimension, the social approach to language in Voloshinov/Bakhtin, that presides to developments on dialogism, and the political approach to literature of Jacques Rancière, that casts a new light on now traditional benefits of “estrangement”. It is thus, without leaving the tenuous zone where esthetic forms meet social forms that my dissertation spans the most actual debates in Francophone studies

Abstract:
Drawing on unpublished texts, manuscripts and artwork, this study analyzes pictorial influences, the inscription of the visual and the representation of the gaze in Sylvia Plath’s work. Plath gradually moves away from an aesthetics which turns poems into frozen pictorial artefacts and which relies on vision as a prime source of inspiration. Envisioning writing both as a dynamic and a violent process, her late poems incorporate cinematic influences and model themselves on the grammar of dreams. This work also focuses on the representation of the gaze in Plath’s work. Failed encounters with mirrors, which only reflect back blurred or alien faces, preside over a paradoxical autobiographical project. Plath’s effort to recreate theatrically the image which the mirror won’t give back is bound up with a deep-seated fear of being petrified by other people’s gaze and by the countless optical devices set up by a highly normative society

Abstract:
Henry Moore dominates the development of English sculpture in the twentieth century. This study bears on what made such an exceptional success possible. Taking up where the avant-gardes had left in the first two decades of the century, Moore contributed to the modernist experiments of the thirties. During the Second World War and the period of the reconstruction, his form of moderate modernism became the norm. As an official artist, he renewed the art of the public monument by combining the influences of primitive art with those of classical Greece. During the Cold War era, Moore's art of reconciliation was made to serve British interests abroad. As the British Council turned him into Britain's best cultural ambassador, his work became tied to the issue of national identity, and how to define and express the values on which British post-war society was being rebuilt. This raises the question of the link between the work of art and history, and how politics is expressed through art. The end of Moore's career was marked by commercial success on an exceptional scale, while the return to organic abstraction reduced the complexity of his vision. The changes and displacements in his work reflect life's ebb and flow, the pressure of the political and social context, the impact of critical discourse and the evolution in the forms of support and promotion of art

Abstract:
Dialogue is a written text representing an oral exchange between two or more persons; it also includes catechisms and rhetorically formulated series of queries and responses presenting an argument. The purpose of my thesis is to identify the main non-dramatic dialogues published in France and Italy between 1800 and 1914 and--through their discursive analysis--to provide an assessment of their signification and their impact on modern social discourse.
The first part focuses on the general discourse elements of modern dialogue, such as narrativity, rhetorical devices, character definition and function, paratextual structures, etc.
The second part includes a series of text analyses that proposes a study of ideological tendencies of modern social discourse through the most representative dialogues of the age.
Finally, the third part concentrates on the literary value and the build-up of dialogue as an aesthetic structure towards the end of the XIXth century and at the turn of the XXth century.

Abstract:
The Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve vegetation mapping project is part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). It is a cooperative effort between the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the National Park Service’s (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program (VMI). The goal of this project is to produce a spatially and thematically accurate vegetation map of Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve prior to the completion of restoration efforts associated with CERP. This spatial product will serve as a record of baseline vegetation conditions for the purpose of: (1) documenting changes to the spatial extent, pattern, and proportion of plant communities within these two federally-managed units as they respond to hydrologic modifications resulting from the implementation of the CERP; and (2) providing vegetation and land-cover information to NPS park managers and scientists for use in park management, resource management, research, and monitoring. This mapping project covers an area of approximately 7,400 square kilometers (1.84 million acres [ac]) and consists of seven mapping regions: four regions in Everglades National Park, Regions 1–4, and three in Big Cypress National Preserve, Regions 5–7. The report focuses on the mapping effort associated with the Northwest Coastal Everglades (NWCE), Region 4 , in Everglades National Park. The NWCE encompasses a total area of 1,278 square kilometers (493.7 square miles [sq mi], or 315,955 ac) and is geographically located to the south of Big Cypress National Preserve, west of Shark River Slough (Region 1), and north of the Southwest Coastal Everglades (Region 3). Photo-interpretation was performed by superimposing a 50 × 50-meter (164 × 164-feet [ft] or 0.25 hectare [0.61 ac]) grid cell vector matrix over stereoscopic, 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) spatial resolution, color-infrared aerial imagery on a digital photogrammetric workstation. Photo-interpreters identified the dominant community in each cell by applying majority-rule algorithms, recognizing community-specific spectral signatures, and referencing an extensive ground-truth database. The dominant vegetation community within each grid cell was classified using a hierarchical classification system developed specifically for this project. Additionally, photo-interpreters categorized the absolute cover of cattail (Typha sp.) and any invasive species detected as either: Sparse (10–49%), Dominant (50–89%), or Monotypic (90–100%). A total of 178 thematic classes were used to map the NWCE. The most common vegetation classes are Mixed Mangrove Forest-Mixed and Transitional Bayhead Shrubland. These two communities accounted for about 10%, each, of the mapping area. Other notable classes include Short Sawgrass Marsh-Dense (8.1% of the map area), Mixed Graminoid Freshwater Marsh (4.7% of the map area), and Black Mangrove Forest (4.5% of the map area). The NWCE vegetation map has a thematic class accuracy of 88.4% with a lower 90th Percentile Confidence Interval of 84.5%.
