Full textThis work on infidelity in the couple discusses the different sources of trouble and their consequences in the life of the couple. The different opinions of various authors on the cause of infidelity in marriage are discussed. Female education during the nineteenth century sheds light on the handicaps which led some girls in trouble because the education of the time had not prepared them to become good wives. This essay shows the image of religion in the two works: Madame Bovary and Crossing the mangrove. The question is how the authors portray religion in these works and why they adopt infidelity to save the woman of her boredom. Finally, the comparison of this boredom is made to see that in these couples even if they belong to different periods, boredom in marriage is the same. These authors made the same strategies to save the couple from their boredom. Moral and religious critics have been used to address the issue, as a Bible reading of these two works has been done.

Full textThis dissertation casts an aesthetic light on a selection of polyphonic novels from the Francophone contemporary canon. From the forms of feminism around the prophet of islam in Far from Madina by Assia Djebar, to the multiple voices of Créolité in Solibo Magnificent by Patrick Chamoiseau, to the forms of individualism in a Guadeloupean village in Crossing the Mangrove by Maryse Condé, these novels are involved in innovative literary strategies. Nonetheless, postcolonial studies left in the shadow the work of forms that is yet the operatory mode of literary thought. To bridge this gap, we need a narratological and stylistic analysis of the techniques of representation of speech and thought. By disentangling the forms and the stakes of the fascinating relationship that is at work between the other’s speech and narrative voices, my dissertation brings a welcomed contribution to Francophone studies as well as to narrative studies.Three major thoughts foster this research: first the concept of counterpoint of Edward Said, seen in its dialogical dimension, the social approach to language in Voloshinov/Bakhtin, that presides to developments on dialogism, and the political approach to literature of Jacques Rancière, that casts a new light on now traditional benefits of “estrangement”. It is thus, without leaving the tenuous zone where esthetic forms meet social forms that my dissertation spans the most actual debates in Francophone studies

Full textDrawing on unpublished texts, manuscripts and artwork, this study analyzes pictorial influences, the inscription of the visual and the representation of the gaze in Sylvia Plath’s work. Plath gradually moves away from an aesthetics which turns poems into frozen pictorial artefacts and which relies on vision as a prime source of inspiration. Envisioning writing both as a dynamic and a violent process, her late poems incorporate cinematic influences and model themselves on the grammar of dreams. This work also focuses on the representation of the gaze in Plath’s work. Failed encounters with mirrors, which only reflect back blurred or alien faces, preside over a paradoxical autobiographical project. Plath’s effort to recreate theatrically the image which the mirror won’t give back is bound up with a deep-seated fear of being petrified by other people’s gaze and by the countless optical devices set up by a highly normative society
Gilles, Maryvonne. "Henry Moore, une traversée du siècle." Paris 10, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003PA100019.
Full textHenry Moore dominates the development of English sculpture in the twentieth century. This study bears on what made such an exceptional success possible. Taking up where the avant-gardes had left in the first two decades of the century, Moore contributed to the modernist experiments of the thirties. During the Second World War and the period of the reconstruction, his form of moderate modernism became the norm. As an official artist, he renewed the art of the public monument by combining the influences of primitive art with those of classical Greece. During the Cold War era, Moore's art of reconciliation was made to serve British interests abroad. As the British Council turned him into Britain's best cultural ambassador, his work became tied to the issue of national identity, and how to define and express the values on which British post-war society was being rebuilt. This raises the question of the link between the work of art and history, and how politics is expressed through art. The end of Moore's career was marked by commercial success on an exceptional scale, while the return to organic abstraction reduced the complexity of his vision. The changes and displacements in his work reflect life's ebb and flow, the pressure of the political and social context, the impact of critical discourse and the evolution in the forms of support and promotion of art

The second part includes a series of text analyses that proposes a study of ideological tendencies of modern social discourse through the most representative dialogues of the age.
Finally, the third part concentrates on the literary value and the build-up of dialogue as an aesthetic structure towards the end of the XIXth century and at the turn of the XXth century.

Full textThe first part analyses the motives according various types of travelers and the symbolic strength of the historic travel imagery. It brings out the psychological and affective forces of the quest to distinguish the determining factors of a foreign reality, it asks questions about objectivity and subjectivity, about the importance of the body, and, through the notion of "cinematic perception", try to understand how film-maker's memory and intentionality is at work inside travel movies. The second part treats the exploration of territories, the relation between the film-maker and the landscape, the otherness (strangeness and stereotypes) and the construction of identity which raises the problem of the commitment of the travel-film-maker. The third part examines the choices in relating travels and their implications in terms of coherence and sincerity of narration. It requires to find the enunciation's authorities and leads to propose the concept of personal enunciation

Full textInteractions between species are dynamic and are likely to shift with changes in species ranges due to climate change. With the expansion of new species into incumbent ecosystems a variety of abiotic and biotic factors shape the rate, pattern, and method of invasion. This dissertation utilizes one such boundary of transition, the salt marsh-mangrove ecotone, located in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This dynamic coastal wetland has recently seen the expansion of sub-tropical mangrove species into a previously salt marsh dominated system. This collection of works provides pointed case studies seeking to understand local and patch scale dispersal dynamics, expansion, recruitment, growth, and survival rates along an elevational gradient, and understanding interactions both above- and belowground between mature mangroves and the surround salt marsh. We find that dispersal is overwhelmingly dominated by propagule export, that black mangrove and smooth cordgrass differ in their ability to provide structural provisioning in the short term after restoration, and that mature mangroves have much greater belowground extent than aboveground. By better understanding species-specific interactions at the salt marsh-mangrove ecotone, a greater understanding of future expansion rates can be gained.

Full textFetishism is part of an epistemological lineage made up of borrowings and assimilations, in which the disciplines that appropriate it are transvalued, in both their methodologies and dogmas, as they use it to consider phenomena that are internal to their field. “Paradigm of perversions” for Freud, “perversion of perversions” for Lacan, fetishism plays a decisive role in the constitution of the theoretical metapsychological frameworks that renders possible the analysis of the erotic variations, but also the subject’s relationship with the object in a more universal sense. When fetishism is no longer an object determined in space, but a surface in which the subject encases himself in order to experience his body differently and modify its image, do these models retain their relevance? What happens when the vocation of the fetish is no longer merely to promote enjoyment, but is used as an additional epidermis mobilized on a daily basis, in contexts beyond the sexual sphere? This research questions the use of artificial materials in a fetishism of a new aspect, made possible by recent industrial developments, not exclusively erotic. Productions that engage corporeality as a whole, from sensoriality to its representativeness. Our methodology relies on a series of clinical interviews and a comparative reassessment of Freudian, Post-Freudian and Lacanian corpora. The specificity of the concept of fetishism, at the intersection of the individual and the collective, will require us to return to its sociological and anthropological origins, all the more so since it is these disciplines which are nowadays reinvesting this object of study abandoned by contemporary psychoanalysis, in order to historicize it, to designate its current forms and their cultural and political underpinnings, and to thwart its normative instrumentalization. The hypothesis of a neo-fetishism, the fates of which we note in the psychic life of the singular subject as well as in postmodern society, therefore allows us to reflect on the future of the concept of perversion, particularly in the approach to minorized sexualities

Full textSome authors feel the need to travel in order to write: leaving, getting out, putting oneself in motion. How can one analyze this movement as a creative process, and how can this movement shape literary writing? This question introduces our research-creation thesis which focuses on a “poïetic of travelling” from two investigative dimensions, one creative and one academic. A central part of this work exposes this dual research through a heuristic approach. It constitutes a reflective space in which the creative process and the articulation of the two dimensions are questioned. Thus, movement implies both a contact with the world and a creative kinetic principle. It confronts the writer and the literature with an otherness, by activating an inherent experimental dimension. The original question is thus practiced, into the creative part of this work through a generative writing process based on a walking journey. This journey becomes the main focus of the narrative Towards the vacant lands, which is altogether a daydreaming, an itinerary and an investigation, that brings the reader to a place where shifts of meaning are experienced, and constitute other displacements. The academic part of this study places contemporary literary texts it the history of travel narrative as a literary genre, and then develops the new term of “writing on the move”. Three types of movements organize the chapters: a travelling, as a jump into the unknown; a wandering, as a reappropriation of a public space; and an itinerary, designing an in situ generative creation process. Literature here calls for other artistic practices in order to understand the contextual dimension of an “on the move” praxis. The questions raised by the practice of writing, in the creative part, interact with these research issues in many ways. They mostly reveal an aesthetism of hybridity and a multidisciplinary dimension, and finally point out a commitment of literature into the world, into a geographical and socio-political environment, through a poethical orientation

Full textRedefining the reality, Giraudoux’s playwriting seems to be a sort of passing through the looking glass.Only when situating Giraudoux’s work in its historical and literary context and getting rid of the conventional image of preciousness that one can appreciate the modernity of the text. For it is in the deep of the playwriting practice that Giraudoux’s virtuosity appears.Bringing the incantatory power of a poetic language to the theatre, the author affirms his rejection of prosaic. Playwriting is an art of composition. The playwright is dealing with the different elements of dramaturgy: language, character, time, space, and dramatic impulse… Moreover, the success of Giraudoux owes much to the talent of Jouvet. The theatre director knew how to transpose on stage, with a subtle blend of sensitivity and grandeur, passion and emotion, the unique glow of Giraudoux's poetic fantasy. In this thesis we intend to demonstrate that Giraudoux's playwriting is an area of an undiscovered modernity. His specificity is to play with the clichés of dramatic language in order to produce unexpected effects. This study starts with the specifics of the playwriting: language, stylistic elegance, stage directions, characters, time, space and play structure. Then, we investigate in Jouvet’s direction through the play’s premiere and finally we try to point out the specifics of the close collaboration between the two men

Mangrove forests are economically and biologically important; however, they are also increasingly threatened. In order to recuperate these ecosystems, rehabilitation programs have been developed. However, in general these programs have no knowledge about the importance of plant-microbe interactions in mangrove ecosystem. This happens also because the limited numbers of studies on microbial ecology in this ecosystem. Therefore, they do not consider the possible effects of plant-microbe interactions in mangrove reforestation approaches. It is known that roots of terrestrial plant species influence the composition of soil bacterial communities. In turn, microorganisms can contribute to plant growth and health. In this study we aimed to develop a polymerase chain reaction -denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCRDGGE) primer system suitable for Archaea domain and Nanoarchaeum genus and to determine if roots of mangrove plants (Rhizophora mangle and Laguncularia racemosa) affect the composition of Archaea and Nanoarchaeum communities inhabiting the sediment under influence of mangrove roots (rhizosphere effect). Archaea and Nanoarchaeum communities were analyzed using molecular methods, such as PCR and DGGE. A PCR-DGGE primer system suitable for Archaea domain and Nanoarchaeum genus was developed based on new 16S rRNA gene sequences recently published. DGGE profiles were analyzed with analysis of similarities (ANOSIM), non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) and Shannon-Wiener index. Both MDS and ANOSIM results suggest that there are significant differences between bulk and rhizosphere samples of R. mangle and L. racemosa. In turn, MDS analyses suggest that roots of L. racemosa affect more the composition of Archaea community from bulk sediment than roots of R. mangle. On the opposite, ANOSIM statistics and MDS analyses suggest that L. racemosa or R. mangle plants do not influence the nanoarchaeal composition and that there are no differences between bulk and rhizosphere samples. Diversity of Archaea and Nanoarchaeum populations was estimated by using the Shannon-Wiener index; and showed that diversity of Archaea was higher than previously reported in marine sediments. With the purpose to complete this study some dominant bands of rhizosphere samples will be cloned and sequenced, clone libraries for Nanoarchaeum will be generated and pyrosequencing analysis of archaeal communities will be performed.
Narra, Pedro Miguel Fragoso. "Attenuation of wave energy in mangrove forests." Master's thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/10522.
Full textMangrove forests are a very important ecosystem in protected coastal zones. These forests provide food and habitat for numerous species and have an important role in the coastal stabilization, trapping sediments and reducing erosion. They also contribute to wave attenuation, which might add to the safety of a coastal environment. Although the importance of mangrove forests in wave attenuation is widely recognized, the amount of comprehensive studies to understand the quantitative effect of the mangroves in the attenuation of wave energy is still insufficient. This thesis aims to increase knowledge on wave attenuation in mangroves by studying this process in the field. Results are presented of a fieldwork campaign executed in the Trang province, Thailand, between November 2010 and May 2011. It is the first known study that includes quantitative information on the vegetation in the field, presenting rates of vegetation density along the studied transects. Two different transects were chosen in Trang province – Kantang and Palian – showing differences in slopes and vegetation. Measurements included surface elevation, vegetation density and pressure fluctuations. After the measurements, the pressure data was carefully selected and analyzed using spectral analysis and wave linear theory concepts. The entire procedure is described in this thesis in order to provide a good basis for future studies in the field. The results show the presence of waves with periods mostly exceeding 5 seconds. At Kantang most of the waves have periods between 10 and 20 seconds. Wave attenuation is found to be about 2.5 J/m2 in 100 meters of mangrove forest at Palian and 0.8 J/m2 per 100 meters of mangroves at Kantang. This difference can be explained by a more accentuated slope, a denser forest and the presence of higher frequency waves that are easily attenuated at Palian. In general, the wave attenuation reaches values around 60% attenuation along the transects. Comparison with other studies shows that the results in this thesis resemble the findings of previous researches. The wave attenuation in mangroves was also compared to wave attenuation in salt marshes and it was concluded that the salt marshes have better wave attenuating capacity if the water depth is not too high, but with increasing water depths they rapidly loose this capacity, in contrary to mangroves.

Full textObjective and problematic: the transsexualism as well as its treatment by the hormonal and surgical sex reassignment are phenomena in the crossroads of all the limits: body, subjectivity, society, psyche … In front of this complexity, running with the approaches structural and deconstructivist, this thesis has for objective to define and to propose a new "transversal" approach of the transsexualism, and in the continuity of this one of the sexed identity, with the elements of the psychoanalytical theory that are the sexual death drive, the third topical of the splited Unconscious, the impulsive realization by the perception and the clinical of the extreme and the ordinary.Material(Equipment) and method: on sample of six subjects transsexuals male to female resorting at present or having resorted to the sex reassignment for more than two years, we analyzed the results in a clinical interview inspired by the structural approach, in the projective tests of the rorschach and the TAT according to the projectivist method of Paris Descartes, as well as in the MMPI-2. Our three hypotheses are that the transsexual identity problematic would send back to the sexual death drive, to the amential Unconscious and to the clinical of the extreme, then that the sex reassignment would have the potential to act such as an impulsive realization by the perception. Results: the results validate both first ones hypothesis on the sex drive, the amential Unconscious and the clinical of the extreme, but not that one on the impulsive realization by the perception. Conclusion and discussion: these results show the interest of a transversal approach to dread a phenomenon borderline as are it the transsexualism and the sexed identity which see each other lit by the transversal theoretical proposed elements (sexual death drive, amential Unconscious and private hospital of the extreme). Concerning, the effects of psychic sex reassignment at the level, it seems necessary to pursue our investigation, the impulsive realization by the perception has been validated to one of our subject but excluded to the other one

The study in depth of the works of Jarry, Segalen and Suarès, written in France tickled by the “regionalistic” anxieties, upset by the birth of the anthropology, dressed in the colors of the fashion of the painters of Pont-Aven, brought to the foreground Brittany as a key figure. A first part (party) analyzes the place occupied by Brittany in their biography. Chapters composing the second part of our work, approach the survival of the Celtic imagination and the Breton legendary universe on their works. The third part is more particularly interested in all the events which urged three writers to dream about the extra-muros and to establish a link between China and Brittany

Full textThe goal of the thesis is to show the major part played by the language and the name of Shakespeare in the beginnings of psychoanalysis, through a reading of Freud's writings. A precise listing of quotations, hints and variations of or on Shakespeare form the basis on which to build the demonstration: the work and thought of Freud have been nourished by Shakespeare's words, from his early youth on. After describing Freud's "English landscape", the research focuses on the words of Shakespeare scattered throughout Freud's work. A chronological study of the quotations follows, underlining the articulation between the shakespearian scène and the beginnings of psychoanalysis. The most prominent motive found is that of the murder of fathers (in Hamlet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar. . . ), and their return as ghosts. What is the fonction of the quotations in Freud's work and thought? A study of "the Motive of the three caskets", of "Those who collapse in front of success" (lady Macbeth) are an attempt to tackle the question; a study of a quotation from Pericles in Civilization and its discontents study the relationship between memory and spontaneous quotations. The research concludes on Freud's doubt concerning the identity of Shakespeare the author, connected to the question of the birth of a work of art — including his own: psychoanalysis

Full textAutonomous vehicles navigation implies that decisions are taken continuously based on a partial and uncertain knowledge of their environment. This is constrained by limited digital representations of the environment and uncertainty associated with the perception process. Further, it is difficult to predict the behaviour of the perceived entities. This is highlighted at crossroad intersections, where most road accidents occur. This thesis proposes a decision-making process that reasons with different types of uncertainties including the behaviour of the observed drivers to plan the vehicle motion. To understand the context and the behaviours of the observed driver's behaviour, a machine learning approach is proposed. The result is feed to the decision-making process to build probabilistic estimation of the environment. The vehicle motion is planned taking into account the effect this might have when the vehicle interact with other entities. Our approach rewards actions that promote interaction and reduces risk. The system behaviour is analysed by using a set of metrics derived from the scenario analysis as well as safety and operational constraints. To infer road context, Gaussian Processes are applied to learn motion patterns from simulated trajectories, which included the effect of vehicle interactions with other entities. The resulting patterns are segmented into areas and used to understand the behaviour of a vehicle approaching an intersection. Then, Random Forest Classifiers are applied to estimate the driver manoeuvre in each area. The dataset used for this training is built using data recorded from road trials and simulations. These classifiers infer lateral and longitudinal manoeuvre by extracting features from the vehicle trajectories. This approach shows that the road context improves the manoeuvre classification and that by mixing few real and simulated trajectories, it is possible to classify the manoeuvres of drivers arriving at an intersection. The decision-making process is built upon Partially Observable Markov Decision Process and uses the output of the manoeuvre understanding. This probabilistic framework reasons including perception and behaviour uncertainty in the environment models. These are used to predict the likely consequences of the autonomous vehicle actions on its immediate environment. However, the evaluation of all combinations of actions and state estimations is complex, therefore, an online solver is used to obtain an approximation of each action value. The vehicle actions are evaluated using a set of rewards, namely: collision risk, behavioural risk, comfort and traffic rules. A weighted sum of linear functions is used to balance each component of the reward function with respect to the vehicle distance to the intersection. It allows to adapt the behaviour of the automated vehicle to different scenarios. To validate the system performances and to determine causes of failure and success, Key Performance Indicators associated to the scenario are proposed. These are part of a generic testing architectures. The approach is applied to cross-cutting scenarios at road intersections, considered very complex and hazardous. Simulation techniques have been used to evaluate the proposed framework, to examine the largest number of scenarios and to be tested in safe conditions. The result of this thesis shows that it is possible to reason with other vehicle behaviour in the decision-making process while approaching a road intersection crossing. While classical methods fail to evaluate the system behaviour, the proposed validation method gives more insights. It will allow to test the system on the real road as well as using more advance data driven methods in the decision-making models
Grayo, Solène. "Mécanismes moléculaires de la traversée de la barrière placentaire par Listeria monocytogenes." Paris 7, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA077159.
Full textListeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen responsible for serious materno-fetal listeriosis (stillbirth, abortion, premature delivery or neonatal infection). In vitro, InlA and InlB are virulence factors implicated in Listeria entry into non-phagocytic cells as epithelial cells of the placental barrier. Both interactions InlA/E-cadherin and InlB/Met are specific of the host species. The molecular mechanisms of the crossing of the placenta barrier by Listeria were still unknown. The aim of my thesis was tto determine the respective contribution of InlA and InlB for the crossing of the placental barrier. First, we have characterized a host species, the gerbil, naturally permissive to InlA and InlB, and generated a new knock-in mice model which expresses a humanized E-cadherin instead of the murine E-cadherin. With these two animal models, we have been able to reproduce human materno-fetal listeriosis. We have also showed the ipterdependently contribution of InlA and InlB for the crossing of the placental barrier in contrast to the intestinal invasion where InlA is only implicated. After, an in vitro approach to reproduce the placental and the intestinal barriers have been developed in the aim of studying each step of the cellular internalisation: the adhesion and the invasion. InlA and InlB proteins have distinct function: InlA plays the role of "an adhesine" and InlB stimulates pathways needed to the placental internalisation. The results of our study have shown the first mechanism of the placental tropism for a human pathogen. We have also determined particularises between the molecular mechanisms of the feto-placental invasion and those of intestinal invasion

Full textImmersive Arts appear as a spatiotemporal aesthetic experience resulting in a trilogy which brings together the dispositive, the artist and the spect-actor. Inductive measures awakening the unconscious and spontaneous part of our imagination create the emergence of ideas, feelings and emotions within the actor’s living body. The depth of the body is activated by the immersion through the artistic mechanisms using one of these typologies: Interactions, “Imsertions” and Hybridisations. The spect-actor or the artist himself experiencing the immersion brings to life in his whole body new feelings and sensations, thus altering his kinaesthesia, his sensory motor and neurophysiological perceptions, developing a new aesthetic interpretation of the universe he is immersed in
