Filer, Christine R. "Character Counts: Traits in Televised Political Campaign Advertisements." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/311298.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines character traits in United States presidential campaign advertisements. It was predicted that Republican and Democratic trait content would be similar in appeal advertisements but would differ in attack and contrast advertisements. Additionally, it was expected that the traits most frequently conveyed in primary election advertisements would differ from those most frequently employed in general election advertisements. The conveyance of traits in conjunction with issues was examined. The hypotheses and research questions were tested on televised campaign ads from the 2008 and 2012 primary and general elections. Overall, both parties appeal to and attack specific character traits with similar frequencies. The traits used in primary election advertisements were much more positive than the traits used in general election advertisements. Campaigns combine issue content with specific traits in their ads. The findings of this study answer questions about how candidates build and shape their images through televised political advertisements.

Abstract:
This project examines the effectiveness of a citizens' advisory committee initiated by the author to assist in the development of a bicycle facilities plan for Madison County, Indiana. A "ladder of citizen participation" was used to rank the level of citizen participation achieved. The MCCOG Bicycle Facility Plan was authored as part of the creative project is also studied in this project. Two components of the plan that were analyzed were the plan's success in meeting performance criteria, and the plan's approach in dealing with the question of separating bicycle traffic from auto traffic or integrating bicycles with auto traffic. This study finds that the participatory process is dynamic and that the level of citizen participation is variable and perhaps progressive. The plan was measured for meeting benchmarks of accessibility and continuity in its proposed routes. Local systems were found to have an integrated approach, while regional systems tend to have a nearly even mix of separated and integrated route systems.
Department of Urban Planning

Felleki, Majbritt. "Genetic Heteroscedasticity for Domestic Animal Traits." Doctoral thesis, Högskolan Dalarna, Statistik, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:du-14310.

Full text
Abstract:
Animal traits differ not only in mean, but also in variation around the mean. For instance, one sire’s daughter group may be very homogeneous, while another sire’s daughters are much more heterogeneous in performance. The difference in residual variance can partially be explained by genetic differences. Models for such genetic heterogeneity of environmental variance include genetic effects for the mean and residual variance, and a correlation between the genetic effects for the mean and residual variance to measure how the residual variance might vary with the mean. The aim of this thesis was to develop a method based on double hierarchical generalized linear models for estimating genetic heteroscedasticity, and to apply it on four traits in two domestic animal species; teat count and litter size in pigs, and milk production and somatic cell count in dairy cows. The method developed is fast and has been implemented in software that is widely used in animal breeding, which makes it convenient to use. It is based on an approximation of double hierarchical generalized linear models by normal distributions. When having repeated observations on individuals or genetic groups, the estimates were found to be unbiased. For the traits studied, the estimated heritability values for the mean and the residual variance, and the genetic coefficients of variation, were found in the usual ranges reported. The genetic correlation between mean and residual variance was estimated for the pig traits only, and was found to be favorable for litter size, but unfavorable for teat count.

Englishby, Tanya Marie. "Genetic and non-genetic evaluation tools for accelerating improvement in beef cattle carcass traits within and across country." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31091.

Full text
Abstract:
The main revenue source for beef cattle farmers is the price they are awarded for carcasses based on carcass value (i.e., carcass weight, conformation and fat score) which is influenced by genetic and environmental factors (e.g., herd management). In order to improve profitability, accurate means of evaluating and improving both sets of factors influencing carcass trait performance are necessary. This would entail optimal management of genetic resources and herd practices. Furthermore, access to a large international germplasm pool would facilitate faster genetic gain. The objective of this thesis was to generate tools for the enhancement of carcass trait genetic and herd management evaluations both at a national and international level. The data used in the thesis originated from the Irish and UK national cattle databases and consisted of 336,944 Irish and 147,876 UK cattle of multiple beef and dairy breeds from 9,572 Irish and 3,385 UK commercial herds. Livestock mature at different rates depending on a number of factors including the genetic background; therefore, the optimum age at which to slaughter the progeny of different sires may differ. Chapter 2 examined sire level genetic profiles for three carcass traits (carcass weight, conformation and fat score) in cattle using data from the Republic of Ireland. Variance components for each trait across age at slaughter were estimated using sire random regression models. Heritability estimates of carcass traits across ages at slaughter varied depending on gender (heifers, steers, young bulls) and the trait in question, and ranged from 0.08 (± 0.02) to 0.34 (± 0.02) for carcass weight, from 0.24 (± 0.02) to 0.42 (± 0.02) for conformation score and from 0.16 (± 0.03) to 0.40 (± 0.02) for fat score. Genetic correlations between traits across ages at slaughter were all significantly less than unity, indicating that different genetic mechanisms control these traits across life. The results from chapter 2 show that genetic variability in the progeny growth trajectory of sires exists and that this variability in the growth profiles of sires for carcass traits may be exploited in breeding programmes. As carcass traits are a function of both the genetics of the animal and the environment in which the animal is reared, chapter 3 aimed to quantify the contribution of the herd environment to the same three beef carcass traits, with particular emphasis on generating finishing herd-specific profiles for carcass traits across different ages at slaughter. The data analysed in chapter 3 was from animals slaughtered in UK abattoirs. Genetic and finishing-herd-year of slaughter parameters were generated using random regression analysis. Across slaughter age and gender, the proportion of phenotypic variance accounted for by finishing-herd-year of slaughter variance was between 30.83%-71.48% for carcass weight, 21.38%-26.29% for conformation score and between 10.88%-44.04% for fat score. These parameters indicate that the finishing herd environment is an at least equally important contributor to carcass trait variability as the genetic background of animals, and amenable to improvement with appropriate management practices. The final study of the thesis was to investigate the feasibility of across-country carcass trait genetic evaluations. Examination of the level of genetic connectedness between Ireland and the UK found 225 distinct bulls common to both countries. These common bulls were related to 80,707 Irish and 23,162 UK animals with carcass records in each population. Genetic correlations for carcass traits between Ireland and the UK were almost unity, ranging from 0.92 (± 0.31) for fat score to 0.96 (± 0.17) for carcass weight, indicating that the carcass traits recorded in both countries are genetically essentially equivalent. These strong genetic correlations between carcass traits in both countries enabled the direct pooling of carcass data for the purpose of across-country genetic evaluations (breeding value estimation). An increased rate of genetic gain for carcass traits per generation was predicted from across-country selection compared to within country selection ranging from 2% (conformation score in Ireland) to 33.77% (conformation score in the UK). This improved gain was primarily due to greater intensity of selection and somewhat more accurate estimated breeding values when carcass records and pedigree information from both countries were combined. The results presented in this thesis demonstrate that routinely collected abattoir data in Ireland and the UK can be exploited to produce additional selection and on-farm management tools. The results also show that access to across-country carcass trait genetic evaluations would allow UK and Irish beef farmers to make more informed decisions on the selection of seed stock needed to increase genetic gain and profits. Outcomes of this thesis pave the way to improvements in national carcass traits genetic evaluations in Ireland and the UK based on appropriate age at slaughter and also demonstrate the feasibility of across-country carcass trait genetic evaluations between Ireland and the UK. The scope for further areas of research includes the identification of specific management practices for optimal herd performance for carcass traits. Additionally, across-country carcass trait genetic evaluations based on random regression models across different ages at slaughter would also be of benefit to beef producers in Ireland and the UK. Finally, the viability of across-country genetic evaluations for additional carcass traits, such as carcass cut weights should be explored.

Abstract:
Tesis

Kheir, Nizar. "Response policies and counter-measure : management of service dependencies and intrusion and reaction impacts." Télécom Bretagne, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010TELB0162.

Full text
Abstract:
Nowadays, intrusion response is challenged by both attack sophistication and the complexity of target systems. In fact, Internet currently provides an exceptional facility to share resources and exploits between novice and skilled attackers. As a matter of fact, simply detecting or locally responding against attacks has proven to be insufficient. On the other hand, in order to keep pace with the growing need for more interactive and dynamic services, information systems are getting increasingly dependent upon modular and interdependent service architectures. In consequence, intrusions and responses often have drastic effects as their impacts spread through service dependencies. We argue in this thesis that service dependencies have multiple security implications. In the context of intrusion response, service dependencies can be used to find the proper enforcement points which are capable to support a specific response strategy. They can be also used in order to compute the impact of such responses in order to select the least costly response. In a first attempt to realize the thesis objectives, we explore graph-based service dependency models. We implement intrusion and response impacts as security flows that propagate within a directed graph. We introduce countermeasures as transformations to the dependency graph, and which have direct implications on the impact flows triggered by an intrusion. In a second step, we replace the analytic graph-based approach with a simulation-based approach using colored Petri nets. We develop for this purpose a new service dependency model that outperforms the initial graph-based models. It represents access permissions that apply to service dependencies. Attacker permissions are also implemented in this model by interfacing with attack graphs. We develop a simulation platform that tracks the propagation of intrusion impacts, response impacts, and the combined impacts for intrusion and response. We define a new response index, the return on response investment (RORI), that we evaluate for each response candidate with the aim to select the one that provides a maximal positive RORI index.

Banks, Karen Oren. "Framing the food landscape of Travis County." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-08-3778.

Abstract:
Food is something that we all need to survive but it is not something that we all have access to. In the mid 1990’s, a community-based movement arose to systematically address injustices in access to this basic human necessity. The community food security movement approaches issues of food security at each stage of the life cycle of food to ensure that each stage is sustainable, socially just, and equitable. This study uses this framework to challenge traditional notions of food security by critically examining the economic, social and environmental barriers to food equity in Austin, Texas. Austin is said to be one of the best cities to live in the United States, but not because it is food secure. This study therefore examines the food landscape of Travis County and the accessibility of food resources to meet the food needs of area residents. It utilizes a combination of quantitative analysis of food retail locations, focus groups and surveys to gather information about the food needs of underserved residents in Travis County.
text

Menchaca, Jessica Jane. "Invasive plant survey of parks and preserves in East Travis County." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/23990.

Full text
Abstract:
Invasive species are the second-leading cause of the decline of native species, making it a critical global environmental issue (Pimentel 2005). The goal of this study was to identify which non-native invasive plant species are common in eastern Travis County and which environmental factors associate with their establishment and spread in this area. Five parks and preserves were sampled, as they are intended for the conservation of native species and are more accessible for educational use. Six of the 15 species searched for, Bothriochloa ischaemum, Lactuca serriola, Ligustrum lucidum, Lonicera japonica, Melia azedarach, and Sorghum halepense, were each found in at least one of the five sites. The presences and absences of these species were compared to a suite of ecosystem properties, including habitat, disturbance, the average soil depth, and the horizontal and vertical distances to the nearest pond, lake, stream, or river. None of these six species appears to need observable recent disturbance. All of these six species, both woody and herbaceous, can tolerate shallow soils. The woody invasive species Ligustrum lucidum and Melia azedarach seem to prefer more mesic habitats. The invasive grass species Bothriochloa ischaemum and Sorghum halepense seem to prefer habitats that are more open. Several invasions of potential conservation concern were identified.
text

Hauwert, Nico Mark. "Groundwater flow and recharge within the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer, southern Travis and northern Hays Counties, Texas." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/14107.

Full text
Abstract:
The Barton Springs Segment, part of the karstic Edwards aquifer in Central Texas, is a Sole Source aquifer, is habitat to rare karst species, and provides water to a well-loved municipal swimming pool, yet its hydrogeologic properties remain insufficiently understood. For this study, the hydrogeologic characteristics of the Barton Springs Segment were investigated using several approaches, including mapping of hydrostratigraphic units and faults, measurement of upland infiltration, groundwater traces, and aquifer tests. The depositional environment, diagenesis, fracturing, down-dropped and dipping faulted blocks, and subsequent dissolution were determined to play important roles in controlling groundwater flow-path development within the Barton Springs Segment. In particular, downdropped fault blocks create groundwater gradients to the southeast that influence flow in the Edwards outcrop area. Upland internal drainage basins were found to be extremely efficient at conveying recharge to the underlying aquifer. The maturity of natural internal drainage sinkholes can be measured by its bowl volume, which grows in proportion to the catchment area it captures. A 19-hectare internal drainage basin, HQ Flat sinkhole, was monitored for rainfall, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and discrete runoff to the cave drain. During a 505-day period, 5.5% of measured rainfall entered the cave drain as discrete recharge, 26% of measured rainfall infiltrated through soils on the slopes, and the remaining 68% was lost through evapotranspiration. This amount of upland infiltration is consistent with infiltration measurements in other karst areas and is much larger than the 1% upland recharge of rainfall that was previously estimated. A chloride mass balance indicates that at the adjacent Tabor research site, about 50% of rainfall infiltrates to a 6-meter depth. Dye-tracing and pump tests demonstrated that primary and secondary groundwater flow paths are the major influence on transmissivity within the Barton Springs Segment. Groundwater tracing breakthroughs reveal very high advection and relatively low dispersion. Drawdown response to pump tests indicates a very high degree of anisotropy, controlled by location of groundwater flow paths. Overall the Barton Springs Segment is a mature karst aquifer with highly developed rapid, discrete network for both recharge and groundwater-flow.
text

Abstract:
碩士
國立新竹教育大學
人資處應用科學系教學碩士班
96
Abstract Bryophytes are a group of terrestrial plants, small in stature, and vastly grow in diverse ecosystems. This research started from January 2006 to January 2007 and focused on the area of Mt. Shihman, Taoyuan. During this period, samples were collected monthly along the man-made mountain trails, in which bryophytes were targeted within the area of three meters extending from both sides and two meters above the ground. The trails have been divided into five sections according to their distribution. The degree of humidity, openness and man-made interference of the habitat were also recorded. Based on the criteria just mentioned, the bryophytes in this region were categorized into five grouips, soil grown, rocks grown, water frown, trees grown and leaves grown. The preliminary assessment results 39 families, 63 genera and 84 species. In this study, morphology and cells' types of all bryophytes were described and accompanied with keys and pictures and/or illustrations. Identified specimen numbers were drawn on the map along the trails and this may be informative for further application for the Bureau of Shihman Resevoir Center and for the reference of domestically biological subjects in primary school education. In the meantime, all the species recognized in this study can be considered as part of the Taiwanese low altitude bryophytes. This study discovered Chenia leptophylla.

Abstract:
碩士
國立中興大學
動物科學系所
106
A genome-wide association study (GWAS) used a high density genotyping platform represents a method for identifying genetic variations influencing various traits, and the GWAS is the newest tool being proposed to the poultry breeding industry for improvement of animal agricultural species. The object of this study was found the significant and suggestive single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) which should influence the traits of the egg production, egg quality and the relevant of the feeding traits in our native chicken population. We used the F2 population of 743 individuals produced by crossing the Taiwan country chicken L2 line with and experimental line of Rhode Island Red layer R- provided by INRA in 2003.Total of 22 traits were analyzed which including egg number (EN), age at the first egg (AFE), laying rate (LR), egg weight (EW), egg color (EC), egg length (egg_L), egg width (egg_W), egg index (egg_I), eggshell strength (ES), yolk weight (YW), albumin height (AH), eggshell within membrane (EWM), eggshell without membrane (EOM), eggshell membrane thickness (EMT), eggshell weight (ESW), Average feed intake (AFI), Average daily gain (ADG), eggmass, feed efficiency (FE), Residual feed intake (RFI). There are three ways of the statistical analysis were used, including generally linear model (GLM) in software of plink, linear mixed model (LMM) and Bayesian sparse linear mixed model (BSLMM) in software of GEMMA. The results showed that the rs15037617 associated with AFE and GGaluGA165228 associated with EN and LR. There are 14 SNPs were found in LMM associated with 7 traits in egg quality. The traits of egg colour a* have three SNPs associated with rs15409520, rs13593225, rs14637358; egg index associated with rs15190652; ES associated with two SNPs including GGaluGA320913 and GGaluGA007314; there are two SNPs were found, s14075934、GaluGA235913, associated with yolk weight; the SNPs GaluGA134929 and GaluGA006669 were found associated with the traits EWM and EMT, respectively; there are four SNPs were found associated with ESW, including s10721950, GGaluGA082982, rs13764758, GGaluGA264151. There are five SNPs we found that associated with three feeding traits, including AFI, eggmasss and RFI. In the traits of AFI, we found two SNPs including GGaluGA114124 and rs13841376; there are also two SNPs associated with eggmass which named rs15008789 and GGaluGA107494; there are one SNP, GGaluGA020046, we found that associated with RFI. In the analysis of the BSLMM, we found the associated SNPs in egg quality traits only. The trait of egg colour L* associated with GGaluGA000698 and rs14099457; the egg colour a* was associated with rs13746326, rs15409520 and GGaluGA000698; the ESW was associated with rs14480552, rs13764758 and GGaluGA082982. Abstract:
碩士
國立中興大學
畜產學系
92
Reproductive performance was one of the important economic traits in the breeder chickens. In general, Taiwan country chicken has showed a lower egg production as a result of a serious problem for egg production in the breeder. Selection for increase clutch length has achieved a significant improvement for egg production in layers. The purposes of this study were to estimate the genetic correlations between clutch traits and egg production in Taiwan country chicken. The data set was from the National Chung-Hsing University a long-term selection experiment, four strains B, S, D, and L2 that were from the same base population. Daily egg production and pedigree records of the last five generations were used to analyze. In order to satisfy the classical hypothesis for describing traits with polygenetic inheritance via a linear model with normal error, the Box-Cox transformation was used to normalize trait distribution. Variance and covariance components were estimated using VCE package. 1.Compare with egg production traits among the four strains Total egg numbers to 40 wks of age was 71.7, 70.7, 59.4, and 50.7 for the L2, D, S and B strains, respectively. L2 strain had the longest average clutch length (4.07). S strain had the longest average pause length (4.42). The age at first egg is shorter in D strain (157.2), and B strain had the longest (175.5). 2.Box-Cox transformation The coefficient of skewness and kurtosiss of non-normally distributed traits after the Box-Cox transformation were close to zero. After normality, the heritabilities of the most of traits were increased. 3.Estimation of genetic parameters for egg production traits The results in comparison with heritability of egg production in Taiwan Country Chicken, in sire strains (B, S strain), the heritabilities of pause traits were higher than heritability of total egg number, in dam strains (D, L2 strain), the heritabilities of clutch traits were higher than heritability of total egg number. Genetic correlations between pause traits and the number of eggs laid to 40 weeks of age were higher among the four strains. Compare to egg number with the related selection traits, the pause traits were more relative efficiency in sire strains, and the clutch traits were more relative efficiency in dam strains. In sire strains, heritabilities of pause traits deleting periods without laying egg for more than seven days were lower than those of undelete. In contrast, the heritabilities of pause traits exhibited a higher value in dam strains.
