Abstract:
This article examines several of the earliest land purchases in Ontario as phases in a single strategic plan by the British Crown to secure settlement lands and safe communication routes in the aftermath of the American War of Independence. Between 1783 and 1788 British colonial authorities executed a series of right-of-way and land cession agreements with Indigenous nations for lands extending from the St. Lawrence River, westward along the north shore of Lake Ontario, and northward along the historic carrying places linking Toronto, Lake Simcoe and Lake Huron. Viewing the Crawford, Gunshot, Toronto and Matchedash purchases as contiguous in time and space offers both clarity and context to a period of colonial treaty-making in Canada from which few records have survived. Archival holdings contain scant records of proceedings, deeds, maps or boundary descriptions for these treaties. For decades, Indian Affairs officials were concerned about the lack of documentation to validate the terms and extent of these land purchases and it was not until 1923 that the Gunshot and Matchedash surrenders were supposedly confirmed and the boundaries of those tracts encompassed within the terms of the Williams Treaties. For historical researchers, the determination of dates, geography and terms of early colonial treaty agreements remains a challenge. This article contributes both a broader context and greater detail about four such transactions between British authorities and Indigenous nations in southern Ontario in the eighteenth century.

Abstract:
Several scholars, including Workman, Cragg, Dreyer, and now Henry Rack, have called attention to Wesley's endorsement of Locke's philosophy (within limits) and, more broadly, to the debt which he owed to empiricist psychology and theories of knowledge. Wesley read the Essay Concerning Human Understanding in 1725 during the interval between his commencement as a Bachelor of Arts and his election to a Fellowship at Lincoln College, Oxford. The book made a favorable impression which endured to the end of his life. During the decade of the eighties, for instance, Wesley published a series of extracts from the Essay, books I and II, in his Arminian Magazine (volumes 5–7, 1782–1784). He also praised The Procedure, Extent, and Limits of Human Understanding and Things Divine and Supernatural Conceived by Analogy with Things Natural and Divine, books written by Peter Browne (died 1735), an Irish bishop and philosopher whom Locke had influenced to a considerable degree. Indeed, at one juncture, Wesley expressed a preference for Browne over Locke. He wrote in his journal for 6 December 1756, “I began reading to our preachers the late Bishop of Cork's Treatise on Human Understanding, in most points far clearer and more judicious than Mr. Locke's, as well as designed to advance a better cause.”

Abstract:
The focus of this paper is a fascinating but hitherto unstudied 1742 manuscript treatise by Johannes Daniel Schlichting (1705–1765) titled “Sapientiæ Problema” that contains something extremely rare in the mid-eighteenth century: a full-blown speculative cosmogony. As this article reveals, Schlichting developed a distinctive vital liquid matter in an effort to account for the generation of all natural bodies and combat the stamina-based theories that were dominant in his day. He hoped that his treatise would be published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, but an accompanying abridgment by the FRS Henry Baker (1698–1774) strongly implies that Schlichting’s speculative bent and desire to divulge causal explanations were unacceptable to the Englishman and generally ill-suited to the intellectual climate of mid-century England.

Abstract:
AbstractJohn Lightfoot's account of lichens in Flora Scotica was the first Scottish lichen Flora and as such it was novel in several respects: 1) it was published in English; 2) it drew on the knowledge and expertise of several key local collectors and treated lichens from alpine areas for the first time; 3) it made lichens accessible in providing Linnaean binomials, colloquial English, and frequently also Gaelic names, together with lively descriptions, details of ecology, and medicinal or traditional uses when these were known. Of the 117 taxa listed, 109 were classified in the genus Lichen, five in Byssus, two in Mucor and one in Fucus. Nineteen taxa were newly described, of which five are still in current use. John Lightfoot's life, work and botanical friendships are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:
Summary The aim of this paper is three-fold: to call for a re-examination of the early Hindi grammars; secondly, to demonstrate that the grammars in question follow a unique model of language which can best be characterized as the ‘religious-colonial’ model; and finally, to argue that the existing criteria used to evaluate the traditional grammars cannot be indiscriminately applied to the grammars in question and, therefore, a set of new evaluationary criteria is required to arrive at the satisfactory perception of the grammars. The grammars depart from the perception of language embodied in the traditional prescriptive grammars. Compromising between the sociological and a purely linguistic view of language, the grammars are sometimes delinquent in presenting an accurate description of the language. However, treated as socio-historical data, they constitute a rich storage of sociolinguistic information which awaits exploitation by linguists working in the area of socio- and psycholinguistics in general and Hindi linguistics in particular. The claims made in the paper are supported by the analysis of the data drawn from the three oldest grammars of Hindi, primarily, from the oldest grammar, namely, that by Joan Josua Ketelaar (1659–1785?) of 1698, and secondarily, from those of Benjamin Schultze (1689–1760) of 1745 and of Cassino Beligatti (1708–1785?) of 1771.

Abstract:
Factual and theological riddles continue to cluster around Charles Chauncy (1705–1787), pastor of the First (“Old Brick”) Church in Boston and the one most deserving of the title “theologian of the American Revolution.” No one knows the exact place of his burial. It has not yet been determined whether he wrote several anonymous treatises attributed to him (including the anti-revivalistic tract A Wonderful Narrative), and in many recent publications and index files of major libraries he is still confused with his great-grandfather of the same name, the second president of Harvard University from 1654 to 1671–72.

Abstract:
Ethylene oxide (ETO) is presently the most commonly used sterilization method for medical devices. Although alternative sterilization modes such as steam sterilization have been suggested, the effect of steam on dialysis-induced cytokine release is unknown. We enrolled 9 patients on chronic hemodialysis and evaluated at different intervals IL- 1βproduction while treated with ETO (NC1785–Bellco) and steam sterilized NC 1785S-Bellco) Synthetically Modified Cellulose (SMC). A basal test during treatment with NC 1785 was performed (A); the same test was set up 4 weeks after treatment with NC 1785S (B) and, lastly, 4 weeks after returning to NC 1785 (C). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were purified before and after the dialysis session, were isolated on a Ficoll/Hypaque gradient and incubated for 24 h. Spontaneous IL-1β release was evaluated in the supernatant and in the lysate. In A, IL-1βlevels were (in pg/ml/106 cells, in supernatant and lysate, respectively): 5.8 ± 4.8 and 7.6 ± 5.2 in pre-HD and 4.68 ± 3.6 and 9.7 ± 6.65 in post-HD. These levels showed a clear reduction in B: 2.5 ± 2.2 and 4.4 ± 3.1 in pre-HD, and 4.35 ± 6.6 and 7.52 ± 7.22 in post-HD. In the C test, 4 weeks after the return to the ETO membrane, IL-1βlevels remained unchanged: 2.9 ± 1.8 and 4.5 ± 3.1 in pre-HD; and 2.6 ± 3 and 5.7 ± 6.6 in post-HD. Statistical analysis showed significant changes in the pre-HD levels both in supernatant (p < 0.04) and in lysate (p < 0.04). Steam sterilization of SMC induced a lower spontaneous IL-1β release, but this effect was not statistically significant due to the large inter-individual variation. Hence, contrary to claims of better biocompatibility, steam sterilization does not result in a reduced production of pro-inflammatory IL-1β.

Abstract:
Physiognomy is a ubiquitous subject of both pressing contemporary concern and genuine antiquarian early-modern interest. By examining the ways in which physiognomical treatises were read, this study reconstructs a way of looking at and listening to oneself, other people, nature and God, which I refer to throughout as the art of physiognomating. Known in manuscript form in England from at least the twelfth century onwards and probably long before, printed English 'treatises on physiognomy' were a small but constant feature of early modern European culture which, in part, explains the success of Lavater. Although direct translations of Continental versions, the English texts drew their physiognomical content from a handful of Greek, Arabic and medieval Latin authorities. They were owned and read by people of all ages, from a variety of different social groupings and geographical areas. Physiognomating was a multi-faceted phenomenon of the longue durée, understood by some as a natural language based on instinct, a magical knowledge based on divine revelation, a branch of natural philosophy, an aspect of medicine, moral philosophy, political science, humoral theory, astrology, fortune-telling, even game-playing. The meanings of some physical features were more or less consistently agreed upon, whilst many were also supported by physiognomical proverbs and adages. Long understood as an aspect of knowing oneself (nosce teipsum), physiognomy has much to say about early modern conceptions of gender, virtue and beauty as well as the language in which early modern people understood and experienced both their own bodies, the civility of themselves and other people, as well as the character of nature and, ultimately, God. Early modern printed expositions of physiognomical doctrine migrated through a number of generically distinct texts. This migration provides evidence of the ways in which this form of looking and listening - the inspectio sapiens/inspectio prudens - was conceived and used at different times across the period. The readers' graffiti found in the extant copies of these texts show how physiognomating ranged from being the performance of a confessional prayer in the guise of a private medico-moral self-inspection (possibly carried outwith the aid of a looking-glass) in the earlier part of the period, to a more public form of bawdy parlour game in the later part of the period. However, it was predominantly a form of political science, a utilitarian visual ideology for those everyday 'negotiations' with other people, with the aim of achieving business and procreational success in what was seen by many as the hazardous realm of the 'brutish sort' and the public sphere. Whilst physiognomy was central to John Dee's conception of science, Francis Bacon felt it needed cleansing of superstition. Most subsequent philosophers relegated it to the realm of mere opinion. Taught to children and examined at university, physiognomy was also practised by gypsies, vagabonds, astrologers, physicians, priests, ambassadors, lawyers, teachers and parents. This physiognomical gaze was also used for the choosing of a physician, a soldier, a partner or even a hat. The most prominent feature of the early modern reconfiguration of this art of physiognomating was the dissolution of the understanding of the self and other people as a constellation of natural Aristotelian and Christian ethical entities in a more fluid, culturally constructed language drawn from the characters of everyday life.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of my thesis project, A View of Affect has been two fold: to engage closely with an early modern book, and to experiment with the idea that self-examination as a legitimate way to gain knowledge about the body. Working with Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, (1621) has opened to view the extensive constellation of ideas that were part of the philosophical universe of the time. I engaged with the Anatomy of Melancholy by immersing myself in the prose, responding to Burton's writing with my own writing. I also studied and made drawings from early modern anatomical illustrations, and I drew shapes found in nature that seemed analogous to shapes in the body. All the while, I relied firmly on my own observations. The shapes found in nature, and the line quality in the early modern prints influenced my drawings, but I only drew what I saw. A View of Affect is not a historical model, but I did fully embrace Burton's belief in the importance of direct observation. The purpose of my treatise on the how emotions exist and function in the body is not to specify what is there for others, but to encourage readers to look carefully at their own internal life.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explain, through the evolution of French Nationality rules, theorigins and the meanings of the 10 august 1927 Law. This law was the first legal text to beseen as a nationality code. We set out how and why the usual requirements of nationality havebeen progressively modified since 1789 to 1927, not only under the influence of historicalevents, but also in relation with legal effects expected (rights and obligations) by the FrenchNation. Following this evolution, we pay a particular attention to several parts of the Frenchlaw (private, public, penal, international or procedural) and special rules (treaties, conventions, colonial law) linked to nationality. Since the restructuration of its heart until the making of acode, we examine the evolution of the legal corpus. In 1927, at the end of the general process,a legal and autonomous subject appears: even if it is not yet entirely identified, codified andharmonised in all its parts, it can take place out of the French Civil Code

Full text
Abstract:
This study is based upon the hypothesis that, from the entry into force of the federal constitution to the First World War, the United States territorial expansion, as well as the federal project, called for a « construction » of international law’s rules and principles within the American boundaries. It is to be remembered that, in 1789, the United States, the member States and the Indian Nations claimed for themselves, on parts or the whole of that space, the sovereignty that every « State » is entitled to according to international law. It is therefore by defining, adapting, or rethinking the notions of « State » or « territorial sovereignty », the conditions required for a territorial title to be held or formed, and by setting the legal status of international law, that those claims have been enforced – or not. Grounded upon the analysis of the American doctrine, practice and case law, the purpose of this study is thus to inquire about territorial issues as raised within what is usually described as a « federal State », sovereign on its territory. Because those issues, and mainly jurisdictional ones, are fundamental to international law, this work hopes to bring to light constructions of international law which are still relevant today

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of stocking density and corn distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) treated with phytase on Chinese catfish (Silurus asotus Linnaeus 1758). In both experiments, fish were stocked in 0.01m3 cylindrical cages accommodated in a round 2000-L fiberglass tank and fed to apparent satiation twice daily. In experiment 1, growth and cannibalistic behavior were determined. Fish (18.34±0.42 g) were stocked at 600, 800 and 1000 fish/m3 or noted as D1, D2 and D3, respectively and fed with commercial feed for 14 days. There were no differences in final body weight (FW) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) among treatments. Weight gain (WG) specific growth rate (SGR) and feed intake (FI) were higher and the yield lower in D1 than D2 and D3. Initial and final density both affected negatively WG and FI but the increase of the final stocking density might decrease mortality. Aggressiveness and its related mortalities were observed in D1 but decreased in higher densities. We did not conclude about the upper limit of stocking density but low density appeared to encourage aggressive behavior and increase cannibalistic mortality. In experiment 2, the effects of three supplemental levels and two methods of phytase inclusion in diets containing DDGS were determined on the growth, whole body composition and nutrients digestibility of Chinese catfish. Phytase was included at 0, 1000 and 5000 U kg-1 diet by post-spray (PS0, PS1, PS5), spray on made diet, or by pretreatment (PT0, PT1, PT5), DDGS incubated with phytase before making diets. Cr2O3 at 1% was added to the diets as an inert marker for the digestibility study conducted for 3 weeks after a 10-week growth experiment. Fish (25.01±0.16 g) were stocked at 800 per m3. Fish fed PT diets had higher survival rate (SR) and yield than those fed PS diets. Fish fed phytase treated diets had higher FW, WG, SGR and FI than the control fish but FCR and SR were not affected. In addition, PT-fish had respectively higher body content and apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of crude protein (CP), ash and phosphorus (P) than PS-fish. However crude lipid was not affected. Generally, phytase improved the ADCs of dry matter (DM) and increasing phytase level also increased both ADCs and fish body content of CP, ash and P. The highest phytase level enhanced the protein efficiency ratio (PER), protein growth rate (PGR) and protein productive value (PPV). ADCs of nutrients were positively correlated with both body content of the same elements and the protein utilization parameters. It appears that phytase treatment can enhance growth, protein utilization and the ADCs of CP, ash and P in Chinese catfish. Consequently, the nutrient load especially P would be minimized. PT is more effective in our study than the PS. Keywords: Silurus asotus Linnaeus 1758; stocking density; DDGS; phytase; pretreatment; post-spray

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to design an annular tank. The annular tank is to store various criticality liquids used in today’s industry. The initial over all dimensions of the annular tank are determined from the capacity of the stored liquids. The design function is performed using the ASME Code Sec VIII Div 1. The annular tank design is broken up into (a) outer cylinder, (b) inner cylinder, (c) top cover, and (d) bottom head. It is supported at the bottom. It is anchored at the top. The deflection of the annular space is a critical requirement. Stresses are usually acceptable because the requirement is on the deflection. For vacuum condition the outer cylinder can be treated for external pressure and the inner cylinder can be treated for internal pressure. For internal pressure condition the design pressure consists of working internal pressure plus static head. For this the outer cylinder can be treated for internal pressure and the inner cylinder can be treated for external pressure. The covers are designed for internal pressure at the bottom where the pressure is the maximum. The designed dimensions are used to recalculate the stresses for the annular tank. The dimensioned annular tank is modeled using STAAD III finite element Software. The stresses from the finite element Software are compared to the stresses obtained from recalculated stresses obtained using ASME Code Sec VIII Div 1. The difference in the stress values is explained. This paper’s main objective is to compare the ASME Code to the finite element analysis. The design is found to be safe for the specific configuration considered. In addition the annular tank is checked for temperature and seismic load conditions, which the code does not address.

Full text
Abstract:
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been treated by using a mechanochemical reaction method to enhance their dispersibility for producing CNT nanofluids. The thermal conductivity was measured by a short hot wire technique and the viscosity was measured by a rotary viscometer. The thermal conductivity enhancement reaches up to 17.5% at a volume fraction of 0.01 for an ethylene glycol based nanofluid. Temperature variation was shown to have no obvious effects on the thermal conductivity enhancement for the as prepared nanofluids. With an increase in the thermal conductivity of the base fluid, the thermal conductivity enhancement of a nanofluid decreases. At low volume fractions (<0.4 Vol%), nanofluids have lower viscosity than the corresponding base fluid due to lubricative effect of nanoparticles. When the volume fraction is higher than 0.4 Vol%, the viscosity increases with nanoparticle loadings. The prepared nanofluids, with no contamination to medium, good fluidity, stability, and high thermal conductivity, would have potential applications as coolants in advanced thermal systems.
