Abstract:
Several treatises have come down to us from Christian antiquity devoted to the defence of the dogma of the resurrection of the flesh (περὶ ἀναστάσεως). Such works are mutually connected by evident similarities in the content and often by literary dependence. The treatise On the resurrection attributed to Justin Martyr is preserved almost exclusively in the Sacra Parallela. This has been used as a source by different authors, e.g. Tertullian (in the treatise De resurrectione) and Methodius of Olympus (in Aglaophon or On the resurrection of the flesh). According to the optimistic viewpoint of recent scholars, the text which is included in the Sacra Parallela represents nearly the totality of the original text. However, this article, by combining the text of Tertullian and Methodius of Olympus, aims to reconstruct some now lost passages of περὶ ἀναστάσεως which are devoted to biblical exegesis (Gen. 3,21; 2,23-24) or which demonstrate the resurrection of the flesh on the basis of philosophical thought.

Abstract:
Through an analysis of Gregory of Nyssa's treatise On the Soul and the Resurrection, this article argues for the compatibility of the doctrines of the immortality of the soul and the resurrection of the body. Nyssa's view is explicitly contrasted to contemporary tendencies to set up a false dichotomy between the two doctrines. After answering the common objection that immortality is an intruder to Christian theology, a typology of four views on the relation between immortality and resurrection is set out. The article concludes with reflections on the theological and practical significance of Gregory's view.

Abstract:
This article traces the deployment of the 14th century devotional treatise, The Meditationes Vitae Christi, in late medieval and early modern England. Beginning with a discussion of Nicholas Love’s 1409 translation of the treatise, The Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ, the article examines how later editors and redactors reshape the treatise for new audiences. Not only does Love’s treatise have a lively print history after the introduction of the printing press, but the later editions by Caxton, de Worde, and Richard Pynson were faithful reproductions of Love’s translation. By the seventeenth century, however, the treatise underwent some drastic revisions under the hands of Charles Boscard and John Heigham. This article presents some much-needed attention to Heigham’s 1622 re-presentation of the text as The Life of Our Blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In reworking this treatise for a much later audience, Heigham deftly combines material from both the Meditationes Vitae Christi and The Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ, while also making some interesting additions of his own.

Abstract:
While many have seen the equation between Macrina and Socrates drawn in the Treatise on the Soul and the Resurrection as Gregory of Nyssa's attempt to honor his sister, a closer look at Gregory's attitude about the relative power of Christianity at the end of the fourth century suggests the opposite: that the character of Macrina lends validity to Socrates and, by extension, to non-Christian intellectual traditions. In this article, I argue that the Treatise is part of a larger project of cultural reclamation enacted by some Christians near the end of the fourth century. The educational reforms of the emperor Julian had instituted a public discourse of evaluation by which one's reading material indicated one's religious identity; after Julian, some Christians adopted this idea, yet in reverse, arguing that reading traditional literature was out of the question for Christians, as it would signal a non-Christian religious commitment. Gregory's Treatise on the Soul and the Resurrection was an effort to walk back the effects of that discourse and to return Christian pedagogy, philosophy, and cultural evaluation to a stance of ambivalence regarding Greek literature.

Abstract:
This article serves as an introduction to the translation of the section on bodily resurrection, from the book «The Incoherence of the Incoherence» (Tahāfut at-Tahāfut) of the peripatetic philosopher Ibn Rushd (Averroes, 1126–1198), written in response to the work of the theologian-asharite al-Ghazali (1058–1111) «The Incoherence of the Philosophers» (Tahāfut al-Falāsifa). The paper reveals the presentist-intellectualist intention of Falsafa eschatology; it also gives a compendium of the polemics of two thinkers around two related issues that are the rational proofs for the immateriality of the soul and its incorruptibility. Moreover, the research provides a brief summary of the section of the Ghazalian book regarding resurrection. The authors also disclose the connection between the book of Ibn Rushd and his earlier theological and polemical treatises «On the correlation between philosophy and religion» and «On the methods of proof for the principles of creed».The article is intended to serve as an introduction to the translation of the section on bodily resurrection, which concludes the book of the peripatetic philosopher Ibn Rushd (Averroes, 1126–1198) «The Inconsistency of Inconsistency», compiled in refutation of the critical treatise «The Inconsistency of the Teachings of the Philosophers» by the mutaqallimah-ash'arite al-Ghazali (1058–1111).

Abstract:
Expecting the arrival of the seventh millennium in 1836, Bolotov wrote in 1823 his eschatological treatise in which he first presented proofs of the immortality of the soul followed by his vision of the afterlife. The proofs were mostly traditional, with one of the relying very heavily on Jung-Stilling’s pneumatology. Bolotov also presented his vision of apocalyptic events: the first resurrection at the beginning of the seventh millennium, and at its end the second coming of Christ, the second resurrection, the last judgment, the end of the old world and the arrival of the new heaven and new earth. Bolotov also provided fairly detailed description of this new earth.

Abstract:
Abstract Building on renewed interest in theosis generally, and particularly with respect to Paul, this essay argues that Romans is the first Christian treatise on theosis, an elaboration of the embryonic passages about theosis, including the "interchange" (Morna Hooker) texts, found in 2 Corinthians. Earlier work on theosis in Paul suggests that it means transformative participation in the kenotic, cruciform character of God through Spirit-enabled conformity to the incarnate, crucified, and resurrected/glorified Christ. This essay traces Paul's soteriology of restoring human dikaiosynē and doxa—fundamental elements of theosis—in Romans. For Paul, this restoration is accomplished by participation in the death and resurrection of the obedient and faithful Son. It is manifested in "righteoused," cruciform communities of Christlike Godlikeness in which Gentiles and Jews glorify God together as a partial and proleptic foreshadowing of the final glory of God and, at least implicitly, as a counterpoint to the pseudo-glory of Rome.

Full text
Abstract:
“The Treatise on the resurrection” is a Coptic translation of a Greek source text that not is preserved. The text belongs to the Nag Hammadi codices. The text is probably produced during the second century. In this thesis, the text will be placed in the Valentinian context, and then as the Valentinianism is presented in codices 1 and XI.1. The research object for the thesis is an examination of the concept “resurrection”, ἀνάστασις. The method is the author-intentional theory of meaning; the thesis focuses on the intents of the author and not the reader´s perspective. The analysis is based on the Coptic source text. A new translation with comments will also be presented. Scholars have unanimity presumed that the text proclaims a realised eschatology. However, from a Valentinian point of view, there is no sustainable evidence for this postulation. The text can also refer to a future “resurrection” with an intermediate state in the spiritual body of the Saviour. The author redefines the sense and meaning of “resurrection”.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is composed of a critical preface, "Reconciling Art and Account in the Creative Essay," and the essay collection Resurrection Attempts: Essays. The preface situates the following essay collection within the genre of contemporary creative nonfiction. Specifically, it argues that genre-bending or genre hybridity are inherent and unavoidable features of creative nonfiction writing and should be celebrated, rather than denied or lamented. It points to other writers who deliberately challenge the bounds of genre, and discusses some of the collection's innovations in form and other ways it offers experimentation, such as use of unusual or borrowed points of view, disruption of chronology, and adoption of elements from other genres of writing, including fiction, poetry, and academic. Ultimately, embracing the artistic side of creative nonfiction (as opposed to its "purely" journalistic side) allows for heightened intimacy with the reader, a much wider breadth of storytelling, and a more vulnerable—and therefore more truthful—interrogation of legacy and the human experience. Resurrection Attempts is a collection of essays exploring the writer's rural Texas childhood and the early and tragic losses of her parents, including the effect of those experiences on her adult life and performance of motherhood. The voices of the writer's sisters sometimes intertwine with hers, especially as she examines the converging and diverging lenses of their shared experience. She works throughout to "resurrect" her parents and even to resurrect earlier versions of other family members, including herself. The collection is particularly fascinated with dreams, drawing a parallel between the subconscious lives of the dreamer and their waking constructions of their memories and experiences.

Abstract:
In March of 2005 I was a cast member in Mad Cow Theatre's production of the Morality drama Everyman. This classic tale on the condition of human dying is regarding as one of the greatest dramas of the Medieval period and is one of the first plays in the English language to be put into print. This thesis is an actor's journey into the history of Medieval theatre, the challenges of producing Everyman for a contemporary audience, and the techniques of acting implemented in the creation of allegorical characters. Medieval drama, like Everyman, is still relevant in today's world because it addresses universal themes of friendship, material wealth, and reverence towards death. It is the story of the human being, the power of beliefs, and the fear of death. This thesis reflects a group of artists' desire to give an audience the gift of insight into their common selves.

Konis, Polyvios. "From the Resurrection to the Ascension : Christ's post Resurrection appearances in Byzantine Art." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2010. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/663/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the evolution and dissemination of the iconography of the post-Resurrection appearances of Christ. Special attention is given to the association between word and image, as well as the influence exerted on art by contemporary theology, liturgy and politics. The earliest use of these apparitions in art is associated with baptism while in literature they were successfully employed against heresies. The Virgin’s participation in the post-Resurrection narrative reveals the way in which homilies and hymns inspire art. Another important figure of these apparitions, which receives special attention, is the Magdalene, whose significance rivalled that of the Virgin’s. While the Marys at the Tomb and the Chairete were two of the most widely accepted apparitions, it was the Incredulity of Thomas that found its way in the so-called twelve-feast cycle and revealed the impact of liturgy upon the dissemination of an iconographic theme. The emergence of the Anastasis will rival their exclusive role as visual synonyms of Christ’s resurrection, but this thesis reveals that their relation was one of cooperation rather than rivalry, since the post-Resurrection scenes and the Anastasis complimented each other in terms of iconography and theology. Finally it becomes apparent that the pilgrimage in the Holy Land and the liturgy that was taking place there is responsible for many iconographic details which help us discern the dissemination of a particular iconography.

Abstract:
Moonie, Australia’s first commercial oil field, was discovered in 1961 and 60 years hence, is on track to be Australia’s first carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) project. Carbon utilisation involves enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology, with the injection of CO2 (CO2-EOR) into the Precipice Sandstone primary oil reservoir. Since acquiring Moonie in late 2016, Bridgeport has completed core and PVT analyses and reservoir modelling studies, which indicate that the field is an excellent candidate for CO2-EOR. Successful history matching of the field as part of reservoir simulation modelling of the cumulative 25 mmbbls of historic production provides confidence of the estimate of the original oil in-place (OOIP). Further technical review to estimate the current and ultimate (post-CCUS) residual oil saturations will inform the likely EOR efficiency. This is an important parameter for predicting expected tertiary oil recoveries from the injection of CO2 into the Precipice Sandstone. A supply of anthropogenic CO2 is expected to be sourced from a post carbon capture (PCC) facility to be installed at the nearby Millmerran coal-fired power station. The initial pilot project at Moonie involves the injection of at least 60,000 tonnes/annum into an existing Moonie oil well with enhanced oil production from an encompassing array of up to 6 production wells. In addition, the pilot will demonstrate that significant volumes of CO2 can be stored safely in Moonie’s secure, structural trap.

Full text
Abstract:
Welds are inspected by various techniques which include visual examination, surface examination and volumetric examination. While the above techniques would qualify a weld to workmanship criteria, they would not necessarily be indicative of weld properties. Preparation and qualification of welding procedures and testing of production welds are indicative that the weldment would probably provide a safe and satisfactory service life. However, weldments have to operate at their design conditions which may include high temperatures and ASME Codes do not necessarily stipulate tests for verification of high temperature properties. In addition, defective welds are often repaired by removing the originally deposited weld metal and re-welding. The effects of double heat input are not necessarily evaluated. In this paper, an insight is provided into the factors which provide assurance that weldments will perform satisfactorily in service and the combination of non-destructive evaluation methods which would enable effective detection of imperfections. Non-destructive volumetric examination method for welds has traditionally be radiography. With the advent of automated data acquisition methods in Ultrasonics, like Time of Flight Diffraction and Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing, these methods are rapidly replacing radiographic methods for weld inspection. Ultrasonic acceptance criteria in ASME Section VIII Div. 1, ASME Section VIII Div. 2 and ASME Section IX do not include evaluation of porosity as ultrasonic methods do not easily detect porosity. The result of all this is that today we are accepting welders qualified using Ultrasonic examination as per ASME Section IX but on the job there is still the option of inspecting the weld using Radiography in which, excessive porosity can be a cause for weld repair. Considering this and various other criteria, a comprehensive weld evaluation methodology is proposed taking advantage of the strengths of each inspection technique while welding technology used would ensure that welds have required properties at service temperatures. A proposal is also made to improve the detectability of imperfections using modifications of existing Ultrasonic A-scan Techniques.
