Zachhuber, Johannes. The Soul as Dynamis in Gregory of Nyssa’s On the Soul and Resurrection. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198826422.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter investigates Gregory of Nyssa’s understanding of the soul in his dialogue De Aanima et Rresurrectione. This text has often been interpreted against the backdrop of Platonic doctrine. Close attention to Gregory’s wording and especially his use of the concept of power (dynamis) in this connection, however, shows that his argument is better explained on the basis of the doctrine of the resurrection of the body which he set out to defend in his treatise.

Ramelli, Ilaria L. E. Gregory of Nyssa on the Soul (and the Restoration). Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198826422.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, Gregory’s treatment of the soul is examined against the backdrop of philosophical treatises On the Soul and in conversation with Origen’s psychology and On the Resurrection (while Origen never wrote On the Soul, for reasons that are here clarified). Tertullian composed both On the Soul and On the Resurrection; Gregory combined the two discussions in a remake of Plato’s Phaedo on the immortality of the soul—here analysed in many of its philosophical components and their treatment until Plotinus and Proclus, and in light of Gregory’s definition of soul and relation between resurrection and restoration. The chapter examines the role of the soul in Gregory’s ‘theology of freedom’—rooted in Plato’s philosophy—and the influence Gregory exerted on Evagrius’ theories of the threefold resurrection and of the subsumption of body into soul and soul into ‘unified nous’: Eriugena was right to trace the latter theory back to Gregory.

Tavares, André. Vitruvius Without Text: The Biography of a Book. gta Verlag, ETH Zurich, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.54872/gta/4302.

Full text
Abstract:
Vitruvius’s “De architectura”, written in the first century BCE, has been revered as the first treatise on architectural theory. Since its resurrection during the Renaissance, its enigmatic text has been adjusted, refined, and redefined in subsequent iterations. The book at hand bypasses exegeses of the text to focus on the material history of the printed editions disseminated throughout Europe. It surveys over a hundred editions of Vitruvius from 1486 to the present, tracing the power of the printed page in establishing the Roman author as an authority. Focusing on the impact of the physical objects that embody the Vitruvian canon highlights how book history and architectural history cross paths and how a symbiotic relationship between the printed and the built emerges. The resulting picture is that of a zigzagging thread between practice and theory, an elusive network of fruitful carelessness in architecture.

Tolstoy, Leo. Resurrection. Edited by Richard F. Gustafson. Translated by Louise Maude. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199555765.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Resurrection (1899) is the last of Tolstoy's major novels. It tells the story of a nobleman's attempt to redeem the suffering his youthful philandering inflicted on a peasant girl who ends up a prisoner in Siberia. Tolstoy's vision of redemption achieved through loving forgiveness, and his condemnation of violence, dominate the novel. An intimate, psychological tale of guilt, anger, and forgiveness, Resurrection is at the same time a panoramic description of social life in Russia at the end of the nineteenth century, reflecting its author's outrage at the social injustices of the world in which he lived. This edition, which updates a classic translation, has explanatory notes and a substantial introduction based on the most recent scholarship in the field.
