Abstract:
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increasingly burdens the health of many people, as indicated by the growing numbers of U.S. military veterans’ claims. An increased awareness of PTSD as a health concern necessitates a careful exploration of treatments. A range of current PTSD treatments and the need to more selectively utilize treatments is addressed. Studies indicate that recent PTSD treatment breakthroughs may offer promise and can be more effectively utilized. Assertions from organizations such as the U.S. National Center for PTSD contradict the commonly cited contention that there is

The term “post-traumatic stress disorder” (PTSD) is a relatively new diagnostic label, being formally recognized in 1980 in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual for Psychiatric Illness – Third Edition (DSM-III) of the American Psychiatric Association (APA, 1980). Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CP) is a more recently discussed, and newly-classified, phenomenon, initially discussed in the early 1990s (Herman, 1992a). Thus, as research into effective treatments for CP is sparse, the treatment of CP is the topic of this study, in which a guideline-based treatment program developed by the res

It begins with a systematic review considering the effectiveness of psychological treatment for PTSD in reducing shame. The literature search revealed 16 articles which were included in the review. The reviewed literature suggested existing PTSD treatments effectively reduce feelings of shame and PTSD symptoms. No particular treatment or intervention component was indicated to be more effective for reducing shame in PTSD. The second chapter reports on a quantitative study that explored the relationship betw

Rewind is a trauma-focussed imaginal exposure technique for posttraumatic stress disorder and sub-threshold trauma that is incorporated into Human Givens (HG) therapy. It has been claimed that multiple traumas can be treated in a single Rewind session and that trauma details do not need to be discussed during treatment. This dissertation intended to evaluate Rewind within the context of HG therapy. A systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated all known studies on the efficacy of Rewind and HG therapy, including grey literature. There were 24 studies that met inclusion criteria for the syste

Veterans diagnosed with PTSD scored higher on the Young Schema Questionnaire and had higher scores on the Measure of Parental Style (MOPS) than veterans not diagnosed with PTSD. Only three childhood negative events were associated with PTSD: witnessing domestic violence; mother unemployed; and living with a stepfather. Three classes of theories were reviewed: conditioning/learning approach; information processing theories with a particular focus on the meaning of the trauma event; and biological models with an emphasis on

In many cases, cPTSD can be linked back to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Treatments for cPTSD that involve psychedelic drugs are potentially beneficial, but unfortunately they are understudied in psychology labs due to their classification as a Schedule I substance. Thus, theoretical work is needed to explain potential mechanisms involved in treatment programs. In this new theoretical model, I c

Abstract Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is a significant foot disorder in which the posterior tibial tendon becomes inflamed and painful and loses its integrity. As a result, the posterior tibialis muscle/tendon unit becomes dysfunctional and, over the long term, the foot acquires a flatfoot deformity. Ideally, one would like to treat the problem early on and prevent the deformity from occurring. However, treatment to restore muscle balance in the foot in the early stages of the disorder have met with minimal success with patients eventually requiring fusions to treat the deformity
