Anaerobic mesophilic treatment of synthetic (a mixture of acetate and methanol) and thermomechanical pulping (TMP) wastewater was studied in laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors and filters with emphasis on the process start-up. The reactors were inoculated with nongranular sludge. The start-up of mesophilic and thermophilic processes inoculated with mesophilic granular sludge was investigated in UASB reactors fed with diluted vinasse. The start-up proceeded faster in the filters than in the UASB reactors with TMP and synthetic wastewater. Loading rates of over 15 k

Abstract The popularity of heat drying of wastewater sludge has increased over the past several years because it can reduce sludge mass and volume, and hence disposal costs. However, drying sludge using conventional combustion-heated dryers is energy-intensive. Heat pump dryers can be efficient and offer significant energy savings by recycling the drying heat. This paper describes a heat pump dryer designed for continuous drying of industrial wastewater sludge. The dryer constructed was essentially a closed-loop air system. Deficiency in the nutrient supply such as nitrogen usually results in activated sludge bulking and this phenomenon often takes place in the industrial wastewater treatment plants with activated sludge process. The experimental results showed that the sludge settled properly at an influent BOD/N value of 100/4. When the value of BOD/N was 100/3, filaments had an excessive growth at one time during t

Anaerobic purification is a cost-effective way to treat high strength industrial wastewater. Through anaerobic treatment of wastewaters energy is conserved as methane, and less sludge is produced. Here, we describe the microbiology of syntrophic communities in methanogenic reactor sludges and provide information on which microbiological factors are essential to obtain high volumetric methane production rates. A debate currently exists concerning whether or not oxygen uptake rate is a valid control parameter for monitoring the activated sludge process. A laboratory study was conducted to attempt to shed light on the controversy. Two bench-scale reactors were operated at steady state and under shock load. Oxygen uptake rate (OUR) was measured with the BOD bottle technique and with an on-line respirometer. The reliability of the results obtained from the BOD bottle technique was also of interest. No relationship could be deduced between effluent quality and oxygen uptake rate thereby suggesting that

The successful operation of a high-rate anaerobic reactor, up flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor depends on the prevailing physico-chemical and biological conditions during its operation. The wastewater characteristics and composition, the hydrodynamics of the process, and microbial activity are critical for achieving long term, optimal reactor performance. Modeling UASBs can be beneficial for design, prediction, and control purposes. This chapter provides sufficient background information on the different biochemical stages of anaerobic treatment, viz., hydrolysis of biodegradable solids, acetogenesis and methanogenesis, the working of a UASB reactor, and some insight into mechanistic modeling of UASBs. The application of neural networks, and a conceptual neural fuzzy model, i.e., adaptive network based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), to model the performance of UASB is systematically outlined in this chapter.
