Abstract:
At the World Championship Punkin Chunkin, you're supposed to throw your food. The contestants hurl pumpkins, the winning team being the one that throws a pumpkin the longest distance. In advance of the competition, which attracts tens of thousands of spectators and happens each November in a field outside Bridgeville, Delaware, contestants construct elaborate chunking machines——including air cannons, catapults, and trebuchets. Contestants also scavenge pumpkin patches in search of ideal, 8-to-10 pound specimen——typically of the Calabaza, Casper, or Lumina varieties——for purposes of ““chunking.”” This article, published on occasion of the Punkin Chunkin's twenty-fifth anniversary, details festival happenings in 2009, when an air cannon called Big 10 Inch took the world title with a throw of 4,162.65 feet. A mile-long throw remains the elusive goal of Punkin Chunkers everywhere. The World Championship Punkin Chunkin is a boisterous annual celebration of fall foods and the harvest, rural culture, and machinery.

Abstract:
Technology has always allowed agents of war to separate themselves from the harm that they or their armed forces inflict, with spears, bows and arrows, trebuchets, cannons, firearms and other modern weaponry, all serving as examples of technologies that have increased the distance between belligerents and supposedly made warfare less sickening than the close-quarters combat of the past. However, this paper calls into question the extent to which new military technologies actually mitigate the savagery of war. It contends that with the introduction of technologies that eliminate the need for a human presence on the battlefield, we are the cusp of a major revolution in warfare that presents new challenges and questions for military technoethics, namely as to how soldiers should conduct themselves and fight justly, if they are to do so at all. Ultimately, it argues that only way to address these issues is through the design of the mediating technologies themselves, which is by no means an easy task.

Abstract:
<p><span style="font-size: xx-small;">The concept "Tianxia" (All-under-Heaven) could be a parallel concept of the "Empire" in the </span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;">West, which also allows a better understanding of the Chinese history with its own political language. This concept not only serves to </span></span><span style="font-size: xx-small;">legitimize the dominion of the Tianzi (Son of </span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;">God Heaven) in China, but also makes possible a </span></span><span style="font-size: xx-small;">political internalization instead of the territorial expansion in the East Asian area. The "Heaven" (or </span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;">Sky) is fundamental to understand the revolution </span></span><span style="font-size: xx-small;">of power in Ancient China, with the various </span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;">meanings in which it has been interpreted. This </span></span><span style="font-size: xx-small;">is finally recognized as the supreme god, that the <span style="font-size: xx-small;">Tianzi inherited and obtained dominion over the </span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;">corresponding earth. However, with the divine and ethical nature of Heaven, the dominator is </span></span><span style="font-size: xx-small;">required to have the virtue and good execution of power to keep the authorization in hand. With this text, the origin and the main development of the Tianxia system are revealed as the legitimizing </span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS,Trebuchet MS; font-size: xx-small;">regime of Chinese politics. </span></span></span></p>

Simon, Nicolas. "Une capitale Musulmane de l'Inde : la forteresse de Daulatabad." Thesis, Paris 1, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA01H023.

Full text
Abstract:
At first capital ofthe Yadava in the 13th century, then annexed by the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century to become the second capital of India for a while, the fortified city of Daulatabad (Maharashtra) remained the key point between North India and Deccan up to the Mughal era in the 17th century. Forming one ofthe earliest Muslim urbanistic example founded by the Tughluq in South India in the 14th century, the many structures of the city had never been so far the subject of a detailed analysis. The aim of this thesis is to draw a chronologic study of the city and its various monuments through the comparisons of building works and a morpho-historical view of the whole site. With the help of maps and detailed drawings of the site, this research was conducted in a comparative manner with several fortified units of the Deccan, independent under the Bahmani kings since 1347. The urbanistic specifications and the layout of the Muslim cities” archetypal authority monuments of the 14th-15th centuries are described and investigated, in an attempt to understand the evolution and change whose main city’s streets orientation has been subject. The distribution of water devices (adductions, wells) and their use are discussed, as well as dwelling distribution and palatial complexes. Besides, the latter will betreated from a stylistic and architectural point of view. At last, changes in the fortifications and defensive system will be addressed through the study of construction, and the aspects of the strategy and the weapons in use

Technology has always allowed agents of war to separate themselves from the harm that they or their armed forces inflict with spears, bows and arrows, trebuchets, cannons, firearms, and other modern weaponry, all serving as examples of technologies that have increased the distance between belligerents and supposedly made warfare less sickening than the close-quarters combat of the past. This chapter calls into question the claims of some proponents of a ban moratorium on lethal autonomous weapons systems regarding a responsibility gap and contends that most implications associated with the introduction of autonomous technologies can be resolved by recognizing that autonomy does not mean the elimination of a human influence on the battlefield and advocates for a black-box-type recorder to ensure compliance with just war theory and the laws of war.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Throughout history there have been a variety of accuracy measures applied to the act of throwing, hurling, launching and/or firing of objects. These include string measure, mean radius, extreme spread, closest to center, probability of hit and score. There are two objectives of the present contribution. The first is expository in nature, to describe the use and relative merits of these measures. Historical data will be examined to estimate the accuracies of such weapons as the trebuchet (a technologically advanced form of a catapult), longbow, smooth bore rifle, “Kentucky” muzzleloading rifle, early breech loading rifle and turn of the century schuetzen rifle. Data related to modern military and sporting firearms will also be discussed. The second objective is to illustrate the use of such measures by evaluating actual data from firings of a scale model of a trebuchet. The model was designed using computer simulations and optimization techniques developed by others.

Abstract:
In order to promote the pursuit of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and careers among Kindergarten through 12th grade students (K-12), a partnership between the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) and the Tennessee Valley Chapter of Women in Defense (WID)-a non-profit national security organization-has been established. The collaborative effort commenced as a result of the WID STEM Initiative (STEMi); a program that aims to actively encourage and inspire youth of the United States (US) to seek STEM careers. The UAH/WID partnership was initiated within a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) capstone design class at UAH that focuses upon the design and fabrication of unique and patentable products. In order to target the K-12 age groups, the UAH/WID effort centered upon the development of products that would inspire the younger students and allow them the opportunity to interact with a hands-on artifact that conveys a specific STEM phenomenon. Several of these artifacts-referred to as STEM tools-have been developed as a result of the UAH/WID collaboration and include the following: fluid flow circuit, interactive solar system, trebuchet, ballistic pendulum, pulley system, and a Wimshurst machine-to name a few. The hands-on STEM tools motivate younger students, as interacting with hardware reinforces theoretical concepts presented in the classroom. While the primary goal of the UAH/WID partnership is to develop the future STEM workforce by inspiring younger students, through hands-on STEM tool interaction, other critical benefits have resulted. Specifically, the engineering design students have garnered invaluable experience associated with meeting stakeholder expectations, designing with safety as a top-level criterion, as well as gaining teaching experience via lessons directed to the K-12 students. Survey data gathered from the K-12 students and teachers clearly indicates that the younger students are inspired and motivated to seek a STEM education and career as a result of the UAH/WID effort. The current paper provides an overview of the UAH/WID partnership, a description of the resulting STEM tools developed, and data conveying the learning outcome and impact that the UAH/WID partnership has had upon the K-12 students, their teachers, and the engineering students at UAH.
