Abstract:
AbstractThe most recent research studies into the long-term landscape evolution of the Abruzzo area, carried out over the last twenty years at the “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara, are based on an integrated approach incorporating structural geology and geomorphology and, in particular, the geomorphometry of topographic and hydrographic aspects, geological and structural-geomorphological surveys and mapping supported by morpho-stratigraphic and chronological constraints. The geomorphological analyses have allowed us to outline the main stages of geomorphological evolution and to identify the factors that have contributed to the landscape shaping of the Apennine Chain, the Adriatic Piedmont and the fluvial plains and coastal sectors, up to the Tremiti islands. In the Apennine Chain, landscape evolution — in a ridge, valley and basin system — is connected to the regional uplift, local tectonic subsidence and local base level variations, which have led to changes in the drainage systems, from exoreic to endorheic (in the intermontane basins) and then to exoreic again. In the Adriatic Piedmont, landscape shaping is connected to uplifting and eustatic sea-level fluctuations, which have induced the formation of a structure-controlled drainage system and the shaping of systems of entrenched alluvial fans and large consequent river valleys, with flights of river terraces. In the coastal Adriatic area — composed of a coastal plain-coastal slope system (northern and southern coast) and of a cliffed rocky coast (central coast, Tremiti) interrupted by river valleys — landscape shaping is the result of selective erosion due to the interaction between marine geomorphic processes and slope processes connected to Late Quaternary eustatic fluctuations.

Abstract:
Abstract. The Tremiti Archipelago (Southern Adriatic Sea), also called Insulae Diomedae from the name of the Greek hero who first landed there, is an area of high landscape and historical value. It is severely affected by significant geomorphologic processes dominated by mass movements along the coast that constitute the most important and unpredictable natural hazard for the population and cultural heritage. Coastal erosion is favoured by the peculiar geological and structural setting, seismic activity, weathering, development of karst processes, and wave action. The present paper reports on descriptive and qualitative evaluation of the factors controlling landslides and coastline changes based on medium-term in situ observation, detailed surface surveys at selected locations since 1995, and historic and bibliographic data. The Tremiti Archipelago is part of an active seismic area characterised by a shear zone separating two segments of the Adriatic microplate that have shown different behaviour and roll back rates in the subduction underneath the Apennines since middle Pleistocene. Although coastal morphology can be basically considered to be the result of wave action, the continual action of subaerial processes contributes effectively to the mechanism of shoreline degradation. Weathering mainly affects the marly calcisiltites and calcilutites of the Cretaccio Fm. and the friable and low cemented calcarenites and biomicrites of the San Nicola Fm. The cliffs are characterised by different types of failure such as lateral spreads, secondary topples, rock falls and slides. At the Isle of San Nicola, landslides are controlled by the contrast in competence, shear strength and stiffness between the Pliocene re-crystallised dolomitic calcarenites and calcisiltites and the Miocene marly calcilutites and calcisiltites. At the Isles of San Domino and Caprara rock falls are attributed to the undercutting of waves at the base of the cliffs.

Abstract:
Between March-May 2013 a massive Salpa maxima bloom was recorded by a citizen science study along the Ionian and Adriatic coast of the Salento peninsula (Italy). Citizen records were substantiated with field inspections along the coast and during an oceanographic campaign in the Otranto Channel.Salps clogged nets, impairing fishing activities along the coast. Swimmers were scared by the gelatinous appearance of the salps, and thought they were jellyfish. At the end of the bloom the dead bodies of the colonies, that were up to 6-7 m long, were accumulated along the coast and stirred by the waves, forming foams along dozens of kilometers of coast. The bloom also occurred at the Tremiti Islands, north of the Gargano Peninsula. The possible impacts of such events on the functioning of pelagic systems are discussed.

Abstract:
Taking its starting point from the current theoretical debate about “religious aesthetics” (Religionsästhetik), this article offers a new interpretation of the landscaping of the Island of Diomedes. On the basis of a survey of the primary sources, it demonstrates that the descriptions of the Island of Diomedes have to be seen in the context of the mythological motif of the Islands of the Blessed. This in turn suggests an explanation for Theophrastus’ statement that in the Adriatic region of his day, the plane tree grew only around the shrine of Diomedes: given the typical associations of the plane tree, the planting of planes on the sanctuary island of Diomedes may have been intended to bring the appearance of the Island of Diomedes in line with contemporary stereotypes about the appearance of the Islands of the Blessed; thus, the plane trees of Diomedes constitute a historical case of direct relevance for the question of “religious aesthetics.” The article goes on to demonstrate that the plane trees of Diomedes constitute conclusive evidence against the identification of the Island of Diomedes with the island of Pelagosa (recently suggested on the basis of archaeological finds). Instead, the Island of Diomedes should be sought among the Isole Tremiti.

Abstract:
6008 Background: Anti-PD-1/PD-L1 are active in metastatic oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma (OPC). Durvalumab (durva) and tremelimumab (tremi) target respectively PD-L1 and CTLA-4, which in combination may be synergistic. Here we report the safety and interim results of durva vs. durva+tremi prior to surgery in a window of opportunity trial in OPC. Methods: Pts were randomized 1:1 to durva 1500 mg or durva 1500 mg + tremi 75 mg IV Q4W x 2 cycles. The primary objective was to quantify pre- and post-treatment differences in CD8+ tumor infiltrating lymphocytes for the two arms. Secondary objectives included safety, toxicity, ORR by RECIST, fraction of patients undergoing surgery at 8 wks, and percentage viable tumor cells in the surgical specimen. Serial pre- and post-treatment blood and tumor specimens were collected for ongoing correlative analyses. Results: 28 pts enrolled: median age 64y, 27 (96%) male, 19 (68%) newly diagnosed, most (63%) at stage IVA (AJCC 7th Ed), 9 (32%) had locoregional recurrence, 24 (86%) p16 positive, and 22 (79%) had ≤ 10 PPY smoking history. Median follow-up was 7.6 months. The most common AEs were fatigue (36%), leukopenia/lymphopenia (25%), transaminitis (25%), and rash (21%). Grade 3 AEs occurred in 4 (14%) pts: 2 elevated lipase, 1 diarrhea, and 1 hepatitis, all were manageable. There were no grade >3 AEs. ORR was 43%: 50% had SD (including 29% tumor shrinkage in 1 pt). Treatment effect in the surgical specimen was observed in 19 (79%) of 24 evaluable pts; 2 pts had major pathologic response (≤ 10% viable tumor) at the primary site. Efficacy was equivalent in both arms. The 2 pts with PD and 1 pt with SD were switched to chemotherapy after durva +/- tremi before resection; interestingly, each achieved a pCR in the primary. Most pts (57%) didn’t receive radiotherapy after surgery. There was a statistically significant association between ORR and treatment effect (p=0.014). The median percentage of viable tumor in the primary was 37.5% in pts with PR, and 82.5% in SD (p=0.003). Conclusions: Durva +/- tremi prior to surgery was well tolerated in OPC pts. Activity is encouraging with treatment effect seen in 79% of pts. The primary endpoint and complete efficacy data will be presented. Clinical trial information: NCT03144778.

Abstract:
Within the Soom Shale Lagerstätte of South Africa (Upper Ordovician, Hirnantian), two brachiopod taxa preserve traces of organic tissue. In Trematis, presumed bands of periostracum are preserved on the flanks of the pedicle notch, and clay mineral casts of the pedicle are preserved in many specimens of Kosoidea. Both these genera are organophosphatic-shelled Linguliformea, together with a third genus identified as Plectoglossa. A fourth brachiopod taxon in the fauna belongs within the calcitic-shelled Rhynchonelliformea (Plectothyrella). Kosoidea cedarbergensis is a new species of discinoidean.

Abstract:
The analysis and design of soldier pile–tremie concrete (SPTC) slurry walls for the Massachusetts Highway Department's (MHD) Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project in downtown Boston are discussed. Unlike most slurry walls, which are used as temporary support for excavation during construction, these SPTC walls are designed also as the permanent wall system for the tunnels. The CA/T includes more than 6.1 km (20,000 ft) of slurry walls. Most of the walls are designed and are to be constructed as SPTC walls. Steel wide-flange soldier piles are installed at 1.21- to 1.83-m (4- to 6-ft) spacings in a slurry trench, and the tremie concrete is placed to form the concrete wall. The steel wide-flange piles form the primary support system for the wall. In most of the locations, the concrete is designed to act as “lagging” spanning between the structural steel members. The concrete base slab is rigidly connected to the SPTC walls, and the composite roof is pin-connected to the walls to form the tunnel. The following topics are discussed after an introduction to the project: geotechnical conditions, design concept of the SPTC slurry walls, design consideration, underpinning of the existing Central Artery, and low head-room construction.

Abstract:
Abstract Black coating of hard substrates by Mn and Fe oxides has long been reported from shallow, dark, submarine caves. However, these littoral metallic deposits have never been studied in detail, despite expected analogies with deep-sea polymetallic crusts. Submarine caves are characterized by darkness and low rates of exchanges with the open sea. Lack of primary production and confinement of inner water bodies result in marked oligotrophy and extremely reduced biomass, i.e. conditions close to those prevailing in deep-sea habitats. Field evidences suggested that the formation of Mn-Fe coatings was closely tied to these particular environmental conditions. The goal of this study was to examine the detailed features of Mn-Fe coatings from dark caves with different local conditions, and to try to identify the processes responsible for their deposition. Study sites and methods: Three sublittoral, single-entrance, caves were sampled by scuba diving along the coasts of Provence (France, Mediterranean Sea). The first site is a large karstic cave (Tremies Cave, 16 m depth at entrance floor, 60 m long; Marseille-Cassis area) with an ascending profile which results in a buffered thermal regime and markedly oligotrophic conditions due to warm water trapping in its upper part. Wall fragments were sampled at 30 m (medium confinement: zone B) and 60 m (strong confinement: zone C) from the cave entrance. The second site is a large tubular cavity open in conglomerate formations (3PP Cave, 15 m depth at entrance floor, 120 m long; La Ciotat) with a descending profile which results in relative permanence of winter temperatures within the inner parts, complex water circulation and presumed greater input of sedimented particles than in the preceding cave. Wall samples were taken at 25 m, 70 m and 100 m from entrance. The third site is a small, horizontal, cave open in quartzite formations (Bagaud Cave, 7 m depth at entrance floor, about 10 m long; WNW of Port-Cros Island, bay of Hyeres). Sampling was performed on walls of a narrow corridor between an anterior room and a smaller inner room. A sporadic outflow of continental waters is located in the inner room. The samples were preserved in 50% ethylic alcohol or studied soon after their sampling. Before carbon coating and SEM examination, or microanalyses with SEM-associated spectrometers, they were treated in a 33% Chlorox solution and thereafter washed in demineralized water and dried. Micromorphology: At low-medium magnification (<20,000), the aspect of coatings varies between caves and, especially, between inner-cave locations. All the described structures are made up of Mn and Fe oxides. In Tremies Cave, coatings of walls from zone B are composed of irregular erected constructions (height: 10s to 100s mu m) formed by the aggregation of roughly ovoid primary concretions of about 10 mu m. The surface of those primary concretions displays numerous lacunose to reticulate films (pores, about 0.5 mu m in diameter, are often subrounded). Remnants of these films and organomorphic corpuscles occur also within the primary concretions. On younger substrates (broken wall exposed since 1970), primary concretions are poorly developed and no prominent construction is visible. In more confined conditions (zone C), the erected constructions of ancient coatings are smaller and less numerous than in zone B but are well individualized. In this zone C, besides some remnants of lacunose to reticulate films, there is an appearance of filaments and ovoid corpuscles (height/width: 10-30/5-15 mu m), which seem to be linked to filaments by a short stalk. In 3 PP Cave, at 25-70 m from entrance, wall coatings present porous heaps of primary concretions. The surface and the inside of the latter comprise remnants of lacunose to reticulate films that evoke those observed in Tremies Cave. On younger substrates (hard parts of sessile invertebrates), coatings are restricted to micrometric organomorphic corpuscles with some remnants of lacunose or fibrous films. At 100 m from the entrance, coatings are shaped by numerous erected constructions, more or less coalescing. Besides remnants of lacunose films, the primary concretions contain interlacing filaments (diameter: 0.2-0.3 mu m) forming cords or veils. In Bagaud Cave, the primary concretions are aggregated in irregular heaps. Lacunose films are particularly frequent and tend to form three-dimensional mamillated structures that were not observed in the other caves. In particular, there is an appearance of tubular structures and of numerous hemispheroidal structures (diameter: 4-5 mu m) with an upper orifice. At higher magnification (20,000), whatever the cave and inner-cave location, the aspect of oxide deposits is rather smooth or, especially, microgranular. Mineral composition: The composition of coatings is different between caves and according to their inner-cave location. In both large caves (Tremies and 3 PP), the Mn/Fe ratio increases with the distance from the cave entrance, i.e. when exchanges with the open sea diminish. This trend is particularly clear in Tremies Cave, where the confinement gradient is strongly marked.

Abstract:
AbstractMiddle Ordovician lingulacean, trematid, and craniid brachiopods are described and illustrated for the first time from the uppermost part of San Juan Formation limestones of the Precordillera Basin, west-central Argentina. Sampled beds fall within theAhtiella argentinabrachiopod Zone, which, according to associated conodonts, is of early-mid Darriwilian age. The fauna consists of the linguloideansGlossella cuyanican. sp. andLingulasma? sp., the discinoideanTrematissp., the siphonotretidChilcatreta tubulatan. gen. n. sp., and a conical shell that is referred provisionally to the order Craniida. The linguliforms from the Cuyania (Precordillera) terrane, although still poorly known, display close similarities to those inhabiting low-to-intermediate latitude palaeocontinents, particularly Laurentia and Baltica, in accordance with evidence from rhynchonelliform brachiopods.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Dredge plume modelling forms an integral part of the supporting studies for EIA applications for both capital and maintenance dredging projects. The behaviour of dredge plumes is function of many variables, many of which are unknown at the time of undertaking the studies. As such engineering judgment, previous project experience (including engaging dredging contractors) and available literature form part of the tools used to characterize the behaviour of dredge plumes. This paper summarises two case studies where underwater disposal (using a vertical tremie pipe) of dredge material from a cutter section (CSD) was simulated in order to meet the regulatory standard at the edge of mixing zone.

Abstract:
This paper presents a description of new gastropods belonging to the superfamily Porcellioidea (Vetigastropoda) from the richly diverse Lower Devonian gastropod fauna of the Road River Formation in the Royal Creek area, Yukon Territory. This fauna belongs to Western Canada Province of the Old World Realm. The Pragian speciesPorcellia(Porcellia)yukonensisn. sp. andPorcellia(Paraporcellia) sp. represent the oldest presently known members of subgeneraPorcellia(Porcellia) andPorcellia(Paraporcellia). Their simple shell ornamentation fits well with an earlier described evolutionary trend in shell morphology of the Porcellinae. Late Pragian to early EmsianPerryconcha pulchran. gen. and n. sp. is the first member of the Porcellioidea bearing a row of tremata on adult teleoconch whorls. The occurrence of this shell feature in the Porcellioidea is additional evidence that the evolution of the apertural slit was much more complicated than has been proposed in classical models of Paleozoic gastropod evolution.

Abstract:
Objective: The objective of the present study was to examine time-related changes in motor performance of daily tasks of the upper extremity ipsilateral to the side of le sion in poststroke hemiparetic patients Methods: Nine patients after an acute uni lateral cerebrovascular accident and 10 age-matched healthy controls were studied. Functional motor abilities of the upper extremity ipsilateral to side of lesion were ex amined over a 4-month time course, using validated measurement tools (Jebsen test of hand function, nine-hole peg test, and three functional activities of daily living). Results: The results indicated a significant impairment in the motor function of the hand ipsilateral to the side of brain lesion in comparison with the matched extremity in control subjects. They also pointed to time-related improvement in performance speed, implying that the deterioration in the functional performance of the upper ex tremity on the uninvolved body side of poststroke hemiparetic patients is not static and may improve with time. The findings further suggested that the left hand of pa tients with an intact right cerebral hemisphere improves more than does the right hand of their peers whose left cerebral hemisphere is intact. Conclusions: Due to the small sample size and methodologic considerations, further and more extensive work is re quired to determine difference in improvement in motor abilities of the ipsilateral left versus the ipsilateral right upper extremities in stroke survivors. Key Words: Stroke—Hand—Recovery.
