Abstract:
Abstract Many researchers of Western esotericism today assume a “methodological agnosticism” whereby they limit themselves to historical and textual verification. They do not adjudicate whether the specific esoteric tradition studied is genuine or spurious, reasonable or unsound, grounded in a spiritual reality or premised in fantastical impossibilities. In this article, I draw on G.I. Gurdjieff’s understanding of the “Law of Three” as extended by British philosopher and Gurdjieff associate J.G. Bennett to argue that a phenomenological approach is a valuable interpretive complement to methodological agnosticism because it offers a reliable conceptual and methodological means for probing esoteric claims as they might be understood via firsthand encounter and experience. Bennett particularized Gurdjieff’s presentation of the Law of Three by describing it in terms of six triads; i.e., systems of three forces that interact to sustain a specific action, process, or happening. In this article, I draw on my ongoing understanding of Gurdjieff’s Law of Three and Bennett’s six triads to suggest that esoteric knowledge is not necessarily “hidden” or “beyond the ordinary” but can unfold in a process of progressive awareness whereby the student engages in an empathetic, deepening understanding of phenomena. Instead of the “outsider” perspective of methodological agnosticism, one draws on an “insider” perspective of committed, first-person involvement.

Abstract:
Corresponding to the “narrative turn” in the human and cultural sciences, this paper advocates a “cognitive turn” in the study of literary narratives. The representation of the self in literary narratives, for example, is in some ways similar to the representation of the self represented in philosophic, psychological, and sociological theory, but the narrative models extend and enrich the understanding of the self. The tradition of literary narrative includes the monadic, dyadic, and triadic models of the self, as well as representations of agent, patient, experiencer, witness, instrumental, and locative selves. Narrative is thus a kind of worldmaking, and the making of complex worlds, such as the worlds of the self, lead towards narrative.

In this paper, I examine Plato’s onto-cosmological conception in the Timaeus, trying to find out how many principles or set of principles are established in Timaeus’ description of the constitution of kosmos. The intelligible model, the sensible copy, the receptacle and the demiurge: these are the different kinds of the things that are and the agents of their relations. But it is not clear at all if this perspective can be represented as a form of monism, dualism or anything else.

Abstract:
Abstract Coordinating different viewpoints is an essential part of human interaction. Languages have evolved conventional ways of supporting this process: many linguistic items are somehow involved in viewpoint management, ranging from morphological elements and lexical units to grammatical constructions and narrative patterns. In this paper we propose a conceptual model for analysing how particular instances (or combinations) of such linguistic items can be used to coordinate the viewpoints of signallers, addressees, and third parties involved in an interaction event. In essence, our model augments Langacker’s (1987) “viewing arrangement” through the addition of a third dimension to the existing two. We discuss the details of our model using a range of examples from spoken discourse, newspaper articles, and literary fiction, and end by placing it in broader discussions on human social cognition.

Abstract:
This paper introduces a new method of studying consumer phenomena by combining two different semiotic philosophies. Using cosmetics as the vehicle to demonstrate the technique, this study explores the semiotics of visible face makeup in Australian Caucasian women. It aims to understand why women wear makeup and how they experience the signs of make-up and appearance in everyday life. The study comprises two phases. The initial phase adopts a communication model extended from Saussurean semiotics, while the second employs a triadic semiotic philosophy as proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce. Results indicate that, by combining the two semiotic perspectives within one study, the researcher is able to gain greater insights about the consumption behaviours of individuals from a communication as well as an experiential perspective. For marketers, this greater understanding of how the consumer interacts and experiences brands and products allows for more strategic and focused communication with their target market. In addition, this approach provides useful information about symbolic consumption, so trends and new directions in cultural paradigms can also be predicted. An example of this is shown in Figure 2.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper addresses a theory/practice nexus represented by a semiotic system of Tarot pictures as iconic signs. Tarot will be analyzed from the perspective of Charles S. Peirce’s and Gilles Deleuze’s philosophies. Tarot functions as a diagram or the included third between “self” and “other,” which are traditionally taken as binary opposites. It thus partakes of the “monster” as a grotesque and ambiguous category that betrays a strict boundary between habitual dualisms, such as mind and world, consciousness and the unconscious, human and divine. While Tarot is usually perceived as irrational and illogical if not altogether “monstrous,” it is the logic of the included middle that enables its functioning. Genuine signs have a triadic structure that includes interpretants crossing over human and non-human natures. The process of reading and interpreting Tarot signs represents specific hermeneutics and constitutes exopedagogy as an alternative form of education partaking of a posthuman dimension. As indices, Tarot pictures refer to the whole gamut of human experiences, and the hermeneutics of Tarot allows us to evaluate experience and to learn from it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
These simple words offer a truly full program. Socialist, philosopher, literary critic and journalist, Pierre Leroux (17971871 developed a theory of vital evolution on all fronts; agriculture, politics, and literature which also obeys the same laws of development, the same doctrine of perfectibility. This thesis aims at explaining how Leroux entered his literary criticism at the core of his philosophy of history, in what he called the philosophy of literary history. This work deals with understanding both the philosophical tradition to which he belongs, comparing with the numerous philosophies of history that have developed in France and in Germany since the eighteenth century. It is about what the ins and outs of this doctrine of perfectibility which has been applied to literature are, as well as its synchrony and diachrony, and about the crucial place literature holds ; and what its impact on the authors at the time was, including George Sand. Pierre Leroux had influenced many of her works from 1837. Thanks to Perrault's, Rousseau's, Germaine de Stael's, and Saint-Simon's legacy, Leroux welcomed in 1830 the romantic call of pain that was heard throughout Europe, and theorized "the symbolic style" while warning them, for instance Victor Hugo and Alphonse de Lamartine, against the drifts that an outdated literature which focused itself on the form could cause. Thus, Pierre Leroux used to preferred to encourage them in order to follow the path of constant improvement, and to make them become the true representatives of their time in a century of pain and desire

Abstract:
For sometime, most intellectuals have agreed that the African philosophical debate has evolved around three tendencies. The first propensity has been that the promotion of traditions and local cultures is the unique and sole venue that would yield the development as well as the happiness of nations. Such a bias has proven to be dogmatic as it is rooted in the belief that people need to be self-reliant. The second proclivity claims that there is no rationale in the idea of relying solely on African traditions, when it is possible to evolve into a synergic symbiosis that includes both modern science and technology. The latter is also quite dogmatic, as it invalidates any shape or form of African rationality. The third current attempts to propitiate traditions and modernism, while putting forward the exhilaration of African customs, and being cognizant of the need to maintain openness and integration of the betterment that a contemporary society might infuse. In this respect, traditions and modernism must symphonize and assimilate their values in order to sustain their essence. However, when applying the sniff test, this debate has remained fruitless; these theories have eluded the question of addressing the existence of African nations, which, from our stand point, remains one of shared happiness. These predilections should have utilized concrete examples from African customs, in order to enhance a coherent philosophy that would propel the development and the happiness of nations. A more practical approach is proposed and illustrated in these writings, which bring forth an ethical rationale of the shared happiness we find among the People of Luba heritage, despite its socio-political implications. Within the ethnic Luba-Kasai, the human goal of everyday living is happiness. Far from being individually centered, the search for a shared happiness is the concern of the entire society (family, clan or village), extending through institutional and symbolic mediation. This perception of happiness runs the social organization, allowing the contribution from as well as the participation of each individual, to the management of the city and the commonwealth. This requires the integration of social and political structures that would advance everyone's rights, dignity and liberty. We therefore insist that the oncoming realization of African happiness does not rest uniquely on an occidental conversion model. It will become a reality when we coalesce western contemporary systems, African traditional values, openness, integration that would lead to reciprocal and mutual enrichment. It is only within such premises, starting within the Luba-Kasaï tribes, that each African nation, each African culture, will find the missing ethical and philosophical links to a more harmonious societal organization.

Abstract:
The definition of the study population for a clinical trial via the criteria for trial eligibility has implications for the validity of the study and its applicability to clinical practice. Though issues of equity regarding the selection of subjects for research have long been a concern of ethicists, issues regarding the impact of subject selection on a trial's generalizability have only recently attracted ethical scrutiny. After a review of the history of the ethics of subject selection, I focus on three empirical questions regarding the generalizability of clinical trials. (1) What proportion of diseased populations are studied in clinical trials? (2) How are subjects selected for clinical trial participation (and what are the main barriers to participation)? (3) Are clinical trial participants comparable to non-participants? Finally, the role of the Institutional Review Board--Research Ethics Board in Canada--in assessing the generalizability of clinical research is discussed.

McCabe, Allan Morgana Elizabeth. "The difference of 'being' in the early modern world : a relational-material approach to life in Scotland in the period of the witch trials." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7811/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how ways of being in different ontologies emerge from material and embodied practice. This general concern is explored through the particular case study of Scotland in the period of the witch trials (the 16th and 17th centuries C.E.). The field of early modern Scottish witchcraft studies has been active and dynamic over the past 15 years but its prioritisation of what people said over what they did leaves a clear gap for a situated and relational approach focusing upon materiality. Such an approach requires a move away from the Cartesian dichotomies of modern ontology to recognise past beliefs as real to those who experienced them, coconstitutive of embodiment and of the material worlds people inhabited. In theory, method and practice, this demands a different way of exploring past worlds to avoid flattening strange data. To this end, the study incorporates narratives and ‘disruptions’ – unique engagements with Contemporary Art which facilitate understanding by enabling the temporary suspension of disbelief. The methodology is iterative, tacking between material and written sources in order to better understand the heterogeneous assemblages of early modern (counter-) witchcraft. Previously separate areas of discourse are (re-)constituted into alternative ontic categories of newly-parallel materials. New interpretations of things, places, bodies and personhoods emerge, raising questions about early modern experiences of the world. Three thematic chapters explore different sets of collaborative agencies as they entwine into new things, co-fabricating a very different world. Moving between witch trial accounts, healing wells, infant burial grounds, animals, discipline artefacts and charms, the boundaries of all prove highly permeable. People, cloth and place bleed into one another through contact; trees and water emerge as powerful agents of magical-place-making; and people and animals meet to become single, hybrid-persons spread over two bodies. Life and death consistently emerge as protracted processes with the capacity to overlap and occur simultaneously in problematic ways. The research presented in this thesis establishes a new way of looking at the nature of Being as experienced by early modern Scots. This provides a foundation for further studies, which can draw in other materials not explored here such as communion wares and metal charms. Comparison with other early modern Western societies may also prove fruitful. Furthermore, the methodology may be suitable for application to other interdisciplinary projects incorporating historical and material evidence.

Full text
Abstract:
While current scholarship acknowledges the influence of Buddhist ideas on Julio Cortázar’s fiction, critical analysis of this element of his work does not often engage in depth with Buddhist thought. Buddhism is frequently characterised as something mystical or mythical when read in relation to the works of Cortázar. This approach leads to an insufficient reading of the highly important notion of the ‘centro’ in Rayuela (1963), whose symbolism, evoking a dynamic equilibrium, may be more successfully explored with closer reference to Buddhist philosophy. The Argentine author Marcelo Cohen has also engaged with Buddhist ideas in his works; his Buda (1990), a biography of the historical Buddha, testifies to this interest. Again, however, this aspect has not received full attention in critical scholarship. Given the importance of the use of negation in Cohen’s literature, comparing Cohen with Buddhist philosophy can enrich our understanding of many aspects of his works, such as his treatment of relationality. I have chosen to compare both Argentine authors with the Indian Buddhist philosopher Nāgārjuna, who is considered the founder of the Madhyamaka school, which is particularly associated with the theory of ‘emptiness’ (‘śūnyatā’). Nāgārjuna’s philosophy is cited directly in Cortázar’s poem ‘Canción de Gautama’ and Cohen’s Buda and informs a number of these writers’ other texts. The main body of the thesis is divided into three sections. These examine the triadic relation between time, identity and language, with each section focusing more on one of these three aspects in turn. The three chapters and three authors will be drawn together to form a new reading of the role of negation.

Huang, Juin-lung. "Law, reconciliation and philosophy : Athenian democracy at the end of the fifth century B.C." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/437.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to defend Athenian democracy against a long-established suspicion that the Athenian government, with its radical form of popular participation, was not only incompetent but also dangerous. There are two serious misunderstandings in this traditional view; one is the myth of the decline of Athens after the death of Pericles, the other being the outright denial of Athenian democracy by its philosophers, Xenophon and Plato. These two common presumptions about Athenian history and philosophy are therefore examined. The historical examination focuses on three important events: the law reform, the reconciliation and the trial of Socrates. All of them were conducted by Athenian democracy at the end of the fifth century B.C., a period of time that is often cited for the failure of democracy. However, it is found that the democracy demonstrated its excellent ability to manage political conflicts through the laws and the reconciliation. As to the infamous trial of Socrates, there were reasons for the popular suspicion of the Philosopher’s way of life. Following what we have learnt in the historical survey, we search for responses to the three events in the works of Xenophon and Plato. There are passages, though often dismissed by scholars, which indicate remarkable recognition of the democratic achievements in domestic politics. As regards the trial of Socrates, there are also signs of second thoughts in their works that reveal understandings of the democracy’s condemnation of philosophy. The works of Socrates’ pupils show mixed evaluation rather than outright denial of Athenian democracy. The traditional suspicion of Athenian democracy is therefore problematic due to its misconception of Athenian history and philosophy.

Abstract:
In this thesis I explore the emergence of the Christian triad with reference to two contemporary movements: Middle Platonism and Gnosticism. The earliest Christian writer to enumerate the three constituents of what would become the Christian Trinity is Justin. In addition to his three extant works, Justin’s triadology can be diagnosed from those he directly influenced – Tatian and Athenagoras – who I have (somewhat artificially) grouped under the heading the “school of Justin”. The ontological triad adopted by these Christian thinkers is compared with the triads of Middle Platonism and Gnosticism, both in terms of their structure and in terms of the function and ontological status of the individual constituents of these triads. In this thesis I propose that a liturgical triad of primitive Christianity, the trine baptismal formula, was conflated by the “school of Justin” with the ontological triad of Middle Platonism, resulting in three referents of the baptismal formula being embued with new functions and ontological status. Whilst emerging as a hierarchical triad, the logic of Platonic ontology when combined with Christian tradition required the sharp distinction between God, as Being, and all other things resulting in a Christian triad that was also a unity. This new triad became fixed as a central tenet of Christianity. I find no plausible connection between any known Gnostic triad and the triad of the “school of Justin”. There is some interaction between Gnostic and Platonic thought during this period. It is possible that the Triple-Powered One pre-empted the Being-Mind-Life triad of Neoplatonism.

Abstract:
Dynamic Positioning Systems are used in numerous types of marine operations. Due to the important differences in the external loads acting on the vessel, standard DP systems may fail to perform in ice conditions. Moreover, specific principles and position keeping philosophies should be applied in ice covered waters. The objective of the paper is to elaborate on these aspects by presenting and analyzing full scale DP tests. These tests were a part of the station-keeping trials performed in March 2017 in drifting ice in the Bay of Bothnia. Control algorithms limitations of Standard DP Systems are presented, showing the necessity of new control principles. The importance of crew training is also demonstrated along with the approaches to keep position in ice.

Abstract:
In connection with the Statoil SKT project, DNV GL have developed a method for estimating ice loads on the ship hull structure and mooring tension of the anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel Magne Viking by full scale measurements. In March 2017, the vessel was equipped with an extensive measurement system as a preparation for the dedicated station-keeping trial in drifting ice in the Bay of Bothnia. Data of the ice impacts acting on the hull were collected over the days of testing together with several other parameters from the ship propulsion system. Whilst moored, the tension in the mooring chain was monitored via a load cell and logged simultaneously to the other parameters. This paper presents the processes involved in developing the measurement concept, including the actual installation and execution phases. The basic philosophy behind the system is described, including the methods used to design an effective measurement arrangement, and develop procedures for estimation of ice loads based on strain measurements. The actual installation and the process of obtaining the recorded data sets are also discussed.

Abstract:
This paper describes the conceptual ideas, the theoretical validation, the laboratory testing and the field trials of a recently patented fuel-air mixing device for use in high-pressure ratio, low emissions, gaseous-fueled gas turbines. By making the fuel-air mixing process insensitive to pressure fluctuations in the combustion chamber, it is possible to avoid the common problem of positive feedback between mixture strength and the unsteady combustion process. More specifically, a mixing duct has been designed such that fuel-air ratio fluctuations over a wide range of frequencies can be damped out by passive design means. By scaling the design in such a way that the range of damped frequencies covers the frequency spectrum of the acoustic modes in the combustor, the instability mechanism can be removed. After systematic development, this design philosophy was successfully applied to a 35:1 pressure ratio aeroderivative gas turbine yielding very low noise levels and very competitive NOx and CO measurements. The development of the new premixer is described from conceptual origins through analytic and CFD evaluation to laboratory testing and final field trials. Also included in this paper are comments about the practical issues of mixing, flashback resistance and autoignition.

Abstract:
Abstract A system named Tool Trial System (TTS), which is capable of collating and disseminating information relating to tool trials amongst a variety of user groups, has been developed. In the context of tooling engineers TTS has provided a platform from which it is possible to submit and retrieve highly specific technical tooling data on the World Wide Web. TTS has been developed under a distributed philosophy and it can be downloaded by remote users in the form of Java applets, through any computer with Internet connection and using conventional Java enabled browsers without the requirements of using middle tiers software or hardware between clients and server sides. TTS uses a 100% pure Java driver for remote database access and it was developed using PowerJ, which is a graphical programming tool able to speed up the creation of Java projects. This work demonstrated not only the suitability of the Internet as a distributed computing resource, but more importantly it was possible to look at the ways in which approved data could be analyzed and then applied to cutting data selection within the Process Planning arena.

Behera, Chaitanya, Sandip Mahajan, Carlos Annia, et al. "Challenges, Opportunities and Threats of Deep Bottoms-Up Water Injection in Heavy Oil Reservoir: Lessons Learnt from the G Field, South Oman." In SPE 2020 Symposium Compilation. SPE, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/203783-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study carried out to improve the understanding of deep bottom-up water injection, which enabled optimizing the recovery of a heavy oil field in South Oman. Understanding the variable water injection response and the scale of impact on oil recovery due to reservoir heterogeneity, operating reservoir pressure and liquid offtake management are the main challenges of deep bottoms-up water injection in heavy oil fields. The offtake and throughput management philosophy for heavy oil waterflood is not same as classical light oil. Due to unclear understanding of water injection response, sometimes the operators are tempted to implement alternative water injection trials leading to increase in the risk of losing reserves and unwarranted CAPEX sink. There are several examples of waterflood in heavy oil fields; however, very few examples of deep bottom water injection cases are available globally. The field G is one of the large heavy oil fields in South Oman; the oil viscosity varies between 250cp to 1500cp. The field came on-stream in 1989, but bottoms-up water-injection started in 2015, mainly to supplement the aquifer influx after 40% decline of reservoir pressure. After three years of water injection, the field liquid production was substantially lower than predicted, which implied risk on the incremental reserves. Alternative water injection concepts were tested by implementing multiple water injection trials apprehending the effectiveness of the bottoms-up water injection concept. A comprehensive integrated study including update of geocellular model, full field dynamic simulation, produced water re-injection (PWRI) model and conventional field performance analysis was undertaken for optimizing the field recovery. The Root Cause Analysis (RCA) revealed many reasons for suboptimal field performance including water injection management, productivity impairment due to near wellbore damage, well completion issues, and more importantly the variable water injection response in the field. The dynamic simulation study indicated negligible oil bank development due to frontal displacement and no water cut reversal as initial response to the water injection. Nevertheless, the significance of operating reservoir pressure, liquid offtake and throughput management impact on oil recovery cann't be precluded. The work concludes that the well reservoir management (WRM) strategy for heavy oil field is not same as the classical light oil waterflood. Nevertheless, the reservoir heterogeneity, oil column thickness and saturation history are also important influencing factors for variable water injection response in heavy oil field.

Abstract:
A long-term UK research programme has been established in order to improve the understanding of thermo-mechanical behaviour and residual stresses generated in pressure vessel steel welds as well as developing finite element (FE) welding simulation methods. The production of representative test specimens is an important element of this research project, since quality measurement data are needed to validate FE models. This paper describes the design, development and manufacture of welded plate specimens used for residual stress (RS) experiments. To date, research has focused mainly on developing the understanding of SA508 pressure vessel steel welds. Specimen dimensions were selected to facilitate stress measurements using a range of techniques. The philosophy adopted was to start with relatively simple 1-pass weld specimens and gradually increase the complexity to multi-pass groove welds in plates. Simple 1-pass weld specimens were generally designed to investigate the effect of welding parameters on thermo-mechanical behaviour, such as heat-affected zone (HAZ) microstructures and phase transformations. Later specimens are more representative of multi-pass power plant welds. They are being used to study material thermal cyclic hardening/softening behaviour. Other issues of concern are also being investigated, such as the effect of restraint during welding on RS and the effectiveness of post weld heat treatment (PWHT). Specimens were also designed to study peak stresses arising at bead stop/start positions and whether such peak stresses are annealed in overlaying additional weld metal. These investigations were performed on multi-pass groove welds in both austenitic and ferritic steel plates. Practical issues encountered during welding trials are discussed, including plate distortion and magnetisation of the ferritic steel plates. Information is also provided about welding temperature measurements and metallurgical examinations.

Abstract:
Complex integrated control systems are involved in nearly every aspect of offshore drilling, safety, environmental protection and other aspects of vessel operation. Safety, reliability and productivity are expected from high specification control systems such as those found on offshore supply vessels, drilling and production platforms. The ability of a control system to perform as expected is dependent on the underlying software which should be conceptualized, engineered, programmed and verified to provide the required stability and performance. Undetected errors in the software can cause hesitation and doubt for the operator upon execution of subsequent actions, in normal and/or emergency situations. The operator, who should be focused on normal operations, now has to deal with the added complexities and confusion brought about by unexpected software behavior. Traditionally, commissioning and sea trials are periods when there is increased effort to update the functionality of the control systems. Statistics indicate that updates done during traditional commissioning introduces a larger number of unintentional software defects than if the functionality issues were thoroughly vetted during the software development process. During the asset’s operational life, vendor software updates on existing systems should be coordinated to maintain or improve safety and productivity. Software development should be managed to uncover issues early in the development process, where effective solutions can be discussed to resolve issues and manage risk using a number of risk mitigation methods. The software development should follow a process wherein participation is garnered from stakeholders and the operational philosophy is documented in a Functional Description or Concept of Operation document. These documents facilitate safety as well as environmental and project risk mitigation. The challenge of the software development process is compounded by the fact that many different suppliers have diverse requirements and inherent limitations which necessitate the development of effective and specific solutions. Verification of software involves utilizing a number of test cases and exercising the software to uncover defects in the code. Testing the integration involves conducting test to verify proper communication and timeliness of the commands and data transfer between the different connected equipment in the integrated control system. Following an internationally recognized process for software development leads to reduced errors in the software, a more predictable control system and thereby, a safer and more productive asset. The methodology summarized in this paper has been created to assist developers, owners and users in software risk mitigation and is built upon industry best practices.
