This casts Paul in the role of a violent giant who, on trial before Christ, acknowledged his past crimes and pled for forgiveness. In the fifteenth-century East Anglian play, The Conversion of Ser Jonathas the Jewe by the Myracle of the Blissed Sacrament, five Jews desecrate a host to challenge the Christian doctrine of transubstantiation. In the play's image of Jewish characters, fifteenth-century English Christianity constructed an ethnic, religious, and cultural alterity. A Jewish merchant, Jonathas, bribes a Christian merchant, Aristorius, to steal a consecrated host from a local church. Five Jewish characters then stab the host, nail it to a pillar, boil it, and bake it in an oven over a fire. In this last trial, the

First I look at the historical context of each trial, finding that each was preceded by a rebellion that the accused was suspected of inciting (the Thirty Tyrants’ in one, the Exarch Gregory’s in the other). Then I summarize the Trial, noting numerous similarities between it and the Apology. After this, I examine some o

AbstractIt is in Jonathan Edwards's Freedom of the Will (1754) that he reconciles impeccability and freedom of the will in the human soul of Jesus Christ, even when Jesus is in a state of trial. But how does he shape a synthesis between these two attributes without duplicity, and at the same time avoid theological and christological barbs, whether Arminian or Hobbist, Nestorian or Apollinist? For Edwards, the Son of God did not surrender impeccability when he undertook to fulfil – in human nature, and in a state of trial – intra-trinitarian promises, promises made not only by the Father to the

Abstract:
One of the first rectors of the University of Paris, Marsilius of Padua, is commonly seen as the first theorist of secularity. This chapter demonstrates that Jesus’ Roman trial is of fundamental importance for Marsilius’ political thought. Indeed, it is claimed here that the conceptual architecture of Marsilius’ Defender of the Peace cannot be reconstructed without close attention to the Roman trial of Jesus. “Christ willed himself to lack authority in this world-age”, writes Marsilius, “in as much as he said: ‘My kingdom is not of this world.’” This dominical saying is taken as a dramatic and irreversible renunciation, by the Son of God, of all secular jurisdiction. What is more, Augustine is Marsilius’ authority for this interpretation of Jesus’ saying. One probable line of transmission for Augustine’s interpretation of this saying is The Chain of Gold, a patristic commentary collated by Thomas Aquinas. Therefore, Aquinas may have a significant place in the history of secularity—not for anything that he wrote, but for something he edited.

Abstract:
As assistant editor, then editor of the Pall Mall Gazette from 1880 to 1888, W. T. Stead pioneered what became known as the ‘New Journalism’, or journalism with a mission. The chapter considers Stead’s three major newspaper campaigns of the 1880s—for improved working-class housing, for sending General Gordon to the Sudan to achieve a just peace, and for exposing and ending child prostitution—with the latter ‘Maiden Tribute’ campaign leading to the ‘martyrdom’ of his trial and imprisonment. It also explores Stead’s involvement in the Irish land war and the ‘Bloody Sunday’ riots at London’s Trafalgar Square, and his friendship with Annie Besant. Underlying his crusading journalism were Stead’s religious beliefs, his sense of the editor’s desk as his pulpit, and of the editor as preacher and prophet, calling on people to follow the example of Christ in sacrificing self-interest and actively working for social reform and social justice.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the opposition to fascism. For instance, Don Giovanni Minzoni, parish priest in Argenta, massacred by the fascists on August 23, 1923, was among the first who understood the fundamental truth that fascism offends Christian conscience. During World War I, Minzoni served as a military chaplain. Notwithstanding this terrible trial, he continued to understand the word of Christ as a teaching of liberty and democracy. Whereas the Vatican was engaging in ever-closer rapprochement with the regime, other Catholics penned calls encouraging people to fight fascism. Igino Giordani, who in 1925 published Rivolta cattolica (Catholic revolt), with the Piero Gobetti Press, was one of these writers. In his text, Giordani openly urges Catholics to revolt, in the name of their faith, against the anti-Christian religion of fascism.

Abstract:
The term ‘tribe’ is resented by some because it resonates with antiquated social evolutionist theories, but it is also a legal term. In order to enjoy certain privileges provided by the Indian constitution, a group needs to be recognised as a Scheduled Tribe or Caste. Many of these tribals call themselves Adivasi, or the ‘first dwellers’, a Hindi/Sanskritic term. It is meaningful to distinguish between the two large groups – the Adivasi and the north-eastern tribals. The Adivasi are formed by a culture system based on belief in a close inter-relatedness with nature. For the indigenous people of Northeast India, land is central to their existence as a community. What made the Christian message of the missionaries attractive was not the message of salvation and of Christ’s redemptive sacrifice but because Christ was portrayed as one who could vanquish these evil spirits they were afraid of. However, the sacrificial elements in the animistic religion were replaced by the self-sacrifice of Jesus. Education has been transformative in the life of the people of Northeast India. Having experienced exploitation that left them aliens in their own land, Christianity enables Adivasis to assert themselves on equal terms with the societies around them.

To varying degrees, all three entail a socially malevolent character with behavior tendencies toward self-promotion, emotional coldness, duplicity, and aggressiveness (Paulhus & Williams, 2002). Subclinical narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy are referred to as the Dark Triad due to their socially undesirable nature, similar phenotypical behaviors (e.g., manipulation), positive intercorrelations of their scales, and conceptual similarities (e.g., ego-centricity) (Rauthmann, 2012).
