However, while many other nations continue to pursue some variation of managed competition to address these problems, Australia has chosen a more incremental reform path, with initiatives such as the General Practice Strategy, restrictions in doctor supply and coordinated care trials. This article reviews the likely effectiveness of such initiatives in the light of experience and evidence of budget-holding in achieving similar objectives ov

Abstract:
Many specialist groups have developed clinical trial initiatives in response to the growing need for more collaborative research, and these are proliferating in multiple countries across the globe. The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), under the direction of Professor John Windsor, established the clinical trials network of Australia and New Zealand (CTANZ). CTANZ supports the Australasian clinical trials in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery (ACTPRAS) research group which has already facilitated two multicentre, international, collaborative studies.

This study aimed to determine and describe HIV-negative gay men's willingness to participate in HIV vaccine trials. Data were from participants who completed face-to-face interviews during the first 18 months (to the end of 2002) of recruitment into the Health in Men cohort of HIV-negative gay men in Sydney. A key outcome measure was a scale of Willingness to Participate in HIV Vaccine Trials, with scores ranging from 1 (unwilling) to 4 (willing). The 903 participants ranged in age from 18 to 75years (median=36). Mean of Willingness to Participate in HIV Vaccine Trials was 2.53 (standard devia

Rice is a staple for much of the world’s population. Increased production of good-quality rice is a necessity for global food security. Variable water supply and increasingly unpredictable weather is an ongoing challenge to the Australian rice industry, with the impact felt along the supply chain from growers to consumers. This multi-environment trial (MET) is focused on capturing the quality of milled grain produced in new growing regions beyond south-eastern Australia. Data on grain quality from 54 rice-variety trials grown between 2008 and 2017 across 10 locations and two seasons (wet and d

The spatial and temporal distribution of Potato virus S (PVS) and Potato virus X (PVX) was studied in two trials within each of four commercial fields of seed potato var. Russet Burbank in Tasmania, Australia. In the first trial (plots) 20 leaflets were collected from each of 49 plots (each approximately 8 m wide by 10 m long), with plots arranged in a 7-×-7 lattice. In the second trial (transects), leaflets were collected at 1-m intervals along seven adjacent, 50-m long rows. The mean incidence of PVS increased during the season by 5.2% in one of four plot trials and 25.5% in one of four tran

Research into winter cereal breeding in Australia has focused primarily on studying the effects of rainfed environments. These studies typically show large genotype × environment (GE) interactions, and the complexity of these interactions acts as an impediment to the efficient selection of improved varieties. Wheat has been studied extensively; however, there are no published studies on the GE interactions of triticale in Australia under irrigated production systems. We conducted trials on 101 triticale genotypes at two locations over 4 years under intensive irrigated management practices and

Abstract Background Readily accessible, smart-phone applications (Apps) have the potential to revolutionise and improve the delivery of patient care. Significant challenges associated with recruiting patients to haematology clinical trials include the rarity of diseases, complexity of trials, limited site locations, and maintaining knowledge of current trials in the context of rapid therapeutic developments. The Haematology Clinical Research Network, of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory (NSW/ACT) aimed to develop an App to facilitate clinician and patient access to current i
