Shapiro, Benjamin. Ibogaine: History, Pharmacology, Spirituality, & Clinical Data. Edited by Shahla J. Modir and George E. Muñoz. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190275334.003.0027.

Full text
Abstract:
Ibogaine is an indole alkaloid derived from the African shrub Tabernathe iboga with broad anti-addictive, anti-depressant, and central nervous system stimulating effects. It is categorized as an oneriogen (or atypical hallucinogen) and has been used in West African tribal rituals for centuries. It was identified by French explorers in the early 1900s, came to the United States in the 1960s, and became marginalized in the mid-1990s after adverse outcomes halted federally funded human trials. Since then legal ibogaine treatment clinics have been established in countries without use restrictions. Ibogaine is a σ‎1 and σ‎2 receptor and μ‎ and κ‎ opioid receptor agonist and a α‎3β‎4 nicotinic and NMDA receptor antagonist. Decades of trials have demonstrated ibogaine’s potential. Human trials of ibogaine consistently demonstrate rapid remission of acute withdrawal symptoms but differ in their findings with regard to abstinence and toxicity. While ibogaine is not a “magic bullet,” considerable abstinence may result after multiple treatments, however QT prolongation can produce lethal ventricular tachyarrhythmias.18 MC is in pre-clinical investigation.

Pati, Biswamoy. Tribals and Dalits in Orissa. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199489404.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book examines diverse aspects of the social history of the marginalized sections of society in Orissa, focusing on the problems of colonialism and the way it impacted the lives of tribals, outcastes and dalits. It delineates how these socially excluded sections were terrorized and further impoverished by both the colonial government and the chiefs of the despotic princely states who worked in tandem with them. In course of six tightly argued chapters, Biswamoy Pati studies several key issues including ‘colonial knowledge’ systems which had a long afterlife, such as the stereotyping of tribals as violent and brutal and colonial constructions of the ‘criminal tribe’. In addition, he closely examines colonial agrarian settlements, adivasi strategies of resistance (including uprisings); indigenous systems of health and medicine, the colonial ‘medical gaze’; conversion (to Hinduism), fluidities of caste formations in the nineteenth century, the Hinduization and appropriation by princely rulers of adivasi deities and healing methods, rituals of legitimacy adopted by these rulers as well as the development of colonial capitalism and urbanization. Alongside, he explores the connections between the marginal social groups and the national movement, besides touching upon the manner in which the ruling classes after Independence have allowed a host of inherited problems to remain unresolved. Adopting an inter-disciplinary method and drawing upon archival and rare, untapped sources, this fascinating study would be of interest to students of history, social anthropology, political sociology, cultural studies, dalit studies and social exclusion. It would also attract non-governmental organisations and planners of public policy.

Calloway, Colin G. Treaties and Treaty Making. Edited by Frederick E. Hoxie. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199858897.013.34.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter surveys how treaty making involving American Indians developed and changed over time. Early colonial treaties involved a hybrid diplomacy of Native rituals and European protocols, and business was conducted with wampum and oratory as much as with pen and paper. Increasingly, treaties involved land cessions. The United States adopted many of the forms of colonial treaties but employed them primarily as instruments of dispossession and removal. In the nineteenth century, the expanding nation-state made treaties that confined Indian peoples to reservations and that also included measures to “civilize” the tribes. Although Congress ended treaty making in 1871, “agreements” continued to be signed and treaties continued to have the force of law. Treaties were contracts between sovereigns, and tribes have invoked treaties to reassert their rights in modern America.
