Abstract:
Midwifery is a dynamic, ever changing, specialised field of nursing involving the care of women and childbearing families. Clients are central to the practice of midwifery and thus their well-being is the main focus of midwives. So, it is not surprising that much of the relatively small body of midwifery research is client focused. As a result, client perspectives have been studied in a number of ways, regarding several aspects of midwifery care. This research, however, aimed to consider midwifery from the midwives' perspective by exploring the everyday encounters of everyday midwives who are working in institutional settings, and identifying the ethical aspects of those encounters. From the researcher's standpoint, it is clear that midwives' everyday encounters are ethical encounters and have potential to be either beneficent or harmful. There was, however, uncertainty that midwives recognized this "everydayness" of ethics. This research sought to clarify the place of ethics within midwives' everyday activities. A further purpose was to ascertain how the ethics that entered into the encounters and activities midwives participated in on a daily basis had affected their practise, their profession and/ or themselves. In doing this, the intent was to broaden the understandings of the ethical dimension of the practice. A particular ethical approach was adopted for this project. It is a view of ethics where persons have regard for, and responsibility toward, each other (Isaacs, 1998). The fact that midwifery is a social practice was expected to be significant in both the everyday encounters that midwives experienced and the ethical responses to those encounters. Members of social practices share an overall purpose and have a moral obligation or desire to practise ethically. As they share a culture and a covenantal commitment to care for those the profession seeks to serve - in a context of gift, fidelity and trust (Isaacs, 1993; Langford, 1978), it was anticipated that midwives would, generally, work in an ethically laden "world". Narrative research offered an appropriate framework for investigating these dimensions of midwifery practice. Many authors have noted the value of story-telling for making sense, and illuminating the ethical features, of our lives. It is, Kearney says, "an open-ended invitation to ethical ... responsiveness" (2000, p. 156). By enabling the participants to tell their stories, rich, contextual narrative material was obtained. The researcher was able to engage with both the participants and the stories as audience. An introduction to the study is provided in Chapter One, while Chapter Two explains both why narrative inquiry was chosen for this research project and the framework that was utilised. The insights from the study are presented in Chapters Three through Six. Each chapter considers the issues and concepts arising from stories that involve midwives' relationships and interactions with a different group of people: midwives, institutions and administration ("them"), doctors and families. In Chapter Three different types of interactions between midwives and their colleagues are explored. Some of the issues that arise are the importance of understanding one's own values and the place of ethics in practice, as well as the need to "do ethics-on-the-run". Many ethical concepts are evident including autonomy, integrity and professional identity. Participants had many negative experiences, and some conveyed feeling a lack of support, threatened or overwhelmed. Conversely, some stories share very positive images of mutual understanding where midwives worked together empathetically. Chapter Four looks at how managers' interactions with midwives impacted upon them and their practice. Unfortunately, this seems to be mostly negative. The midwives convey a sense of feeling undervalued both professionally and personally. Doctors have their turn to interact with the midwives in Chapter Five. In this chapter it becomes evident that doctors and midwives view birth from different perspectives. The participants' stories tell of challenging situations that alert us to the fact that normal, in the context of birth, is not as simple and common place as one might think when doctors and midwives have to work together. Wonderful, positive stories of midwives and doctors working together told of the symbiotic relationship that these two groups of professionals can have when the client is the focus. The last of the insights chapters, Chapter Six, focuses on the relationships midwives have with families. Interestingly, these are the people they spoke of least, even though they are the people for whom the profession exists. Here the concept of midwife as friend is discussed. Then, through their stories some of the participants help us to learn how midwives work together with their clients, care about them, not just for them, and how their past experience has had a lasting impact on their practice. Professionalism (or a lack of it) was implicated as a possible cause of some of the participants' concerns, as was the improper use of power. Both of these concepts arose many times throughout the project. Chapter 7 discusses these issues in some depth. The final chapter provides an overview of midwives situated within their practice. An account is offered of how the participants see the future of their practice and it is questioned if midwifery is, in fact, a social practice with common goals. The thesis draws attention to the embeddedness of ethics in the everyday practice of midwives, and to the vital role that relationships play in midwifery practice. This suggests the need for a relational, contextual ethics approach if the practice is to flourish.

Spiby, Helen. "Clinical trials and their tribulations : a midwife's perspective." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 1998. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20836/.

Abstract:
From the late 1970's, there was an increasing criticism of hospital maternity care. Conventional practices were challenged, including that of recumbency for birth. ofessionals responded to these criticisms in a variety of ways: more homelike decoration in labour wards, information for women through birth plans and new equipment to use in labour. Some obstetricians utilised the randomised controlled trial to evaluate new methods of management. Inevitably, midwives attending women in labour came into contact with these trials. This thesis utilises the experiences of one such clinical trial. A case study methodology was used to identify the impact of the trial on the work and experiences of midwives attending women in labour. The effects on midwives' work include changes of philosophy, changes to practice, increased work, exacerbation of existing inter-disciplinary tensions and difficulties with communication. The effect of the presence of a midwife research assistant has been explored. Midwives' contact with research at the time of the trial is also included. This programme of research has added to the body of knowledge by demonstrating the extent of the impact of clinical trials on the work and experiences of midwives attending women in labour. The appropriateness of the case study approach for use by midwifery researchers has also been demonstrated. Issues arising from the case study have been further reviewed in the light of contemporary midwifery practice, education and research and related to the wider research agenda. Recommendations are made for the conduct of clinical trials in the labour ward and for future avenues of enquiry.

Abstract:
The following utterance is an exploration into the interactive space of glass and the disparity found in metaphors of its transparency. The rhetoric of transparency is initially scrutinized through a story that elaborates, in audacious generalizations, on the totalitarianism that comes out of the atheist rationalism of the Enlightenment. These generalizations are probed specifically in a look at the role of glass architecture and the consequent suppression of the body to a belief in an all-powerful reason.
The inquiry then switches to the operation of the destabilizing effect of a space that devours with its reflections and spatial ambiguities. As absolute transparency is defied by experience in the material world, the space of glass is investigated as an instrument for dissolving the identity of controlling institutions. From the subversive character of reflections, the final look is at the possible emergence of a new attitude and thinking inspired by that experience which does not serve ideological certitudes, but contradicts them.

Abstract:

Over the past twenty-five years, the United States has moved from optimism to considerable pessimism about its role to do well in the world. Indeed, President George H.W. Bush’s “New World Order” stands unquestionably in stark contrast to today’s reality; from failed states in Africa to aspiring if not un-stabilizing states in Asia. Yet, when faced with such problems the United States does not know what it stands for, or what to do about them. In short, since emerging as a superpower the United States has, until of late, known what role it must play in terms of global leadership; whether it was making the world safer for democracy or in charge of a global economic order. Nevertheless, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the American led geo-political system, as a whole, has become more unstable not less.

Using a multidimensional approach this thesis sets out a trio of structural factors: (1) Superpower China; (2) A liberal international order that is neither liberal, nor international, nor orderly; (3) Failed American foreign policy. Combined, these three factors have emerged to mean that American primacy is in real danger. This thesis also proposes that for Pax Americana to continue there must emerge a consistency between American values and the grand strategy that it pursues.

Abstract:
From the end of the seventies to the end of the eighties, a group of portuguese migrants was followed up by the author, in a town located in the surroundings of paris. This group formed itself in the process of setting and livening up a local voluntary organization. The author's goal is to understand the role of this voluntary organization in the arising of the individual and collective identity of the members. The observation is centered around the social relations inside this community, wether inside the organization or in the family and in the local environment. It appears the field of possible choices in self definitions widened up considerably in this period of time. The sense of belonging involves more than just a simplistic alternative between segregation and assimilation. Important variations can be observed. They may be collective and permit individual options

Vollet, Juliette. "Tribulations d'une jeunesse sans diplôme : de l'école aux dispositifs « seconde chance »." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016BORD0193/document.

Abstract:
Dropping out of school has been seen as a risk rather than for individual than for collective well-being given the economic and social up heavals of the French society since the 70’s. A lot of measures have been implemented to tackle the phenomenon whether preventive or repairing. The first ones aim to prevent the dropout and the others are meant to promote the « school reconnection », or in other words to encourage the dropouts to return to school. Processes leading to dropout are now well-known from a scientific perspective. By contrast, there is only limited information on processes leading to reconnect with education. With the objective to fill this gap, this PhD provides a focus on what happens for the dropouts after they leave school, redrawing their path to « school reconnection ». This study includes an observation of the functioning of the so-called « seconde chance » establishments and an analysis of their effects on their pupils. Through a sequential approach of those paths, we identified three key sequences: the dropout, the reconnection and the remaining sequence in which young people invest their reconnection training. I wanted to highlight the ingredients leading to a sequence to another. To do so, I lead 120 semi-structured interviews with young people who dropped out and are now or have been registered within 3 types of French remediation establishments : the « Écoles de la Deuxième chance », the « EPIDe»(Établissement Publics d’Insertion à la Défense), and the « SRE » (Structures de retour à l’école). To begin with, I noted that time is a key ingredient for school reconnection. Furthermore I noticed that the remaining sequence depends on how young people read their situation combining their past scholar experience, the reconnection program constraints and its contributions, effective or expected. Finally, I observed that remediation establishments rely on their social and economic environment, meaning that the « reconnection » can not be viewed as a counterpart of dropout

Foley, Anne. "Trailers and tribulations : crime, deviance and justice in the Gypsy and Traveller community." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2010. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55457/.

Full text
Abstract:
Through a primarily ethnographic approach that also consisted of fifteen interviews with members of the Gypsy and Traveller community and eleven interviews with key-stake holders, this research explores how Gypsies and Travellers deliver justice within their community by developing a greater understanding of their moral codes and their relationship with, and recourse to, official agents of social control. The research shows that the Gypsy and Traveller community adhere to a strict moral code. This at times conflicts with the values held by the wider British society. This has meant that the Gypsy and Traveller community have had to adapt to their environment, becoming bricoleurs; drawing on some facets of the dominant British society while at the same time other aspects are rejected and replaced with their own cultural values. Crime is understood through the notion of harm, and techniques of neutralisation are applied to attitudes of crime and deviance. The research also highlights how informal community justice is operated through a system of restorative justice. Through the use of shame, those who transgress the moral boundaries become reintegrated into the community. However, the severity of some offences is so great the only course of action is the exclusion of the individual. Here shame becomes disintegrative. The community have very limited recourse to official agents of social control. This in part is due the lack of legitimacy seen by Gypsies and Travellers in the policing of their community.

Pearson, Danielle. "The trials, tribulations, and celebrations of younger LGB couples in long-term relationships." Thesis, Open University, 2015. http://oro.open.ac.uk/52262/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the long-term relationship experiences of younger LGB couples. It builds upon existing knowledge and understandings of LGB couple relationships and the lives of younger adults. The study utilised multiple qualitative methods informed by social science research on intimate relationships whilst appraising the biographical, socio-cultural, and temporal contexts within which LGB couple relationship experiences are situated. The research highlights the importance of attending to how couples ‘do’ their relationships as well as the ‘practices’ which sustain them. Findings emphasise the interconnected dimensions of time, space, and intimacy as resources for sustaining couple relationships, with analysis underlining the role of the ‘relational present’ as a lens for understanding everyday relationship experiences. It provides insight into how couples negotiate their everyday lives through relationship work, to facilitate connection, and to maintain and cultivate personal autonomy alongside their couple identity. The temporal horizons of the past and the future inform relationship experiences in different ways, increasing understanding of relating behaviours and signifying a commitment to a shared future. Such futures included marriage/civil partnership, children, and buying homes. Experiences were embedded in the context of participant biography, the wider relationships and communities of the couple, and the current zeitgeist of increased acceptance and civil rights for LGB individuals in the UK. The thesis concludes by discussing the findings in terms of age, reciprocity, relationship resources, and gender.

Abstract:
This paper makes the point into the general problems of the "take off" in the Puebla region during the first half of the XIXth century. Two phenomena must be taken in account since the late XVIIIth. Century : at first the political and cultural ties between the new Spain and the personalities and institutions of the "lumieres" period. Second the results as stimulants as regrettables of the economic growth in the new Spain in comparison with the empire's failure. When the independence finished many economical industrialization projects came ahead in puebla since 1822. At the same time that a new nation was borning the modern economy was the main item to try to eliminate all discussions in politics. This special attemt to the "take off" will be taken by the entrepreneurs aside of politics taking advantage of the "anarchy period" to grow up. Anfres Torres means a particular case which representated the new type of entrepreneur who disposed of material sources to invert in the so called "new industries" as a response of the critical situation of his time

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1980, the literary scene in France has witnessed a revival of romance once made obsolete by the New Novel (Nouveau Roman). Realistic, social, musical, crime, spy and adventure fiction has thus sprung up again. The current study examines and questions the problematic of “return” especially the return of adventure fiction in the very representative work of Jean Echenoz. Thought reviving a classical genre, the author does not shy away from modifying and remodeling that genre’s configurations and issues. Thus, this survey elaborates a poetic of the postmodern fiction of adventures, revisiting a traditional genre to extract contemporary forms and issues, so to speak. But from a broader perspective, the study underscores the tribulations of Echenoz’s fiction, work which does not mind to collapse plots, oscillate from one genre to another or sway between two space-times, at the risk of presenting itself in a turbulent mode of writing confounding the reader - who fells helpless in the face of the unbridled audacity of the author and his narrative perturbations

Abstract:
Thomas bernhard, along with peter handke is, in france, one of the best known contemporary austrian writers. His enormous media presence at the end of the 1980's coincided with the french enthusiasm for vienna's fin-de siecle culture and the transformation of austria's socio-political image from positive to negative. The thesis of a connection between the reception of thomas bernhard and austria'simage in france has lead us to describe the french journalistic reception of bernhard's work, to show its progression and to analyse it through french expectations and preoccupations in the 70's and 80's. An aesthetic and literary reading during the first period (1968-1981) and a psychological interpretations of his autobiographical period (1981-1985), are followed by the ideological readings of the last period (1985-1996), in which thomas bernhard is seen mostly as a public figure, highly critical of austria. The conflictual relationship between this austrian writer and his country underlies this journalistic reception : the socio-political environment permeates the reviews of his work. This highly political perspective is due to the reversal of austria's image, but also due to domestic french preoccupations. Considered as one of the greatest western writers, thomas bernhard is held by french journalistic culture to be the guilty conscience of an antsemite, nazi austria. The relative lull in the french media "war" against austria, after bernhard's death in 1989, his "art of exaggeration" (ubertreibungskunst) is once again considered as much from a literary angle as from an ideological one. The appeal of his work and of his personality is based upon ambivalence, ambiguity and paradox at the beginning of the 90's. Moving from the scandalous austria of waldheim to the myths of vienna and the mitteleuropa, austria is increasingly present in the french media and the french are beginning to perceive its contradictory complexity. Thomas bernhard is both a representative of this austria and one of his country's exemplary critics

Abstract:

Proper names are omnipresent and have long held the interest of both philosophers and linguists. Our work, divided into four parts, presents, from a contrastive perspective, the behaviour of proper names in translation. The first two parts are theoretical. Firstly, we give a general presentation of what is a proper name from the point of view of both English and French linguistics. Secondly, we introduce the different translation processes proper nouns can undergo. The last two parts are experimental. We begin by explaining the different phases in the process of constitution of our aligned and annotated multilingual parallel corpus, composed of eleven versions of Jules Verne’s novel, Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours, in ten European languages. We then present the results obtained from the observation of proper names behaviour in translation. These results often contradict the widespread idea regarding proper names untranslatability

Abstract:
A. N. Wilson is a distinguished contemporary English author and journalist whose writing constantly displays the depth of his understanding of and concern for the Church of England. Himself once a devout Anglican, albeit one of the Church's more vocal watchdogs, Wilson now writes as an outsider and an unbeliever. Yet he is still widely read and highly regarded as a commentator on the institution, and as one who is never reluctant to confront the ills which he believes responsible for its demise.
Wilson takes the church hierarchy to task for neglecting spiritual matters in favour of "issues". He employs satire to illustrate what he believes to be the general mediocrity of the clergy. In his journalism Wilson continues to lambast liturgical changes and to question modern biblical criticism.
By using representative selections from Wilson's writings as novelist, biographer, polemicist and journalist, and by chronicling his own highly publicised religious quest, this study seeks to show the dilemma of a substantial body of contemporary English Anglicans. Furthermore, the inability and impotence of the Established Church in England to meet the needs of its traditional and more moderate worshippers is adequately reflected in Wilson's work.

Doelle, P. "Transmigration, transculturation, tribulation: A sociocultural analysis of a Philippine rural resettlement." Thesis, 2013. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/17499/1/Whole-Doelle-thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the sociocultural ramifications of the migration / resettlement phenomenon. A rapidly increasing population sharing an affluently disparate world has contributed to an ever-increasing migrancy. A corollary of this migration, in an ethnically heterogeneous world, is that more people than ever find themselves living amid unfamiliar cultures. In consequence of this both settler and host communities are obliged to find modi vivendi with which to achieve harmonious coexistences. There appear to be three trajectories possible in such intercultural encounters: (1) the abandoning of ethnocultural lifeways by way of acculturation, (2) the reification of existing cultures, and (3) the exchanging of cultural values. To what degree individuals or groups are prepared to compromise their ethnic identities or cultural values in achieving modi vivendi is dependent on circumstance. Via an analysis of the sociocultural changes that have occurred in a specific Philippine zone of resettlement I demonstrate that integration into new societies is less fraught where mutual cultural exchange takes place. In the course of the twentieth century the Philippines experienced a ten-fold increase in its population. The demographic imperative – coupled with the recognition by both colonial and independent administrations that an increase in land inventories was required to ensure food security, improve livelihoods, and ameliorate social unrest – created the conditions for the resettlement of millions of Filipinos to less populated regions. However, the Philippine’s polyethnicity dictated that this internal migration would have implications for intercultural accommodations, ones that state planners and bureaucrats had failed to anticipate. To comprehend the complex intercultural interactions that have taken place – and the requisite cultural compromises required in achieving modi vivendi – I have chosen the former state-sponsored resettlement scheme centred on Narra / Palawan1 as a representative model. This thesis analyses the manner and degree of the sociocultural changes that have taken place in heterogeneous populations dislocated by Philippine rural resettlement programs – a process I term transmigration. For many, this internal, inter-island, inter-provincial, rural-to-rural population transfer experience has not proved socially onerous – integration into new societies has been unproblematic. I chose the Narra / Palawan resettlement zone to test the hypothesis that interethnic harmony is contingent upon the degree to which individuals and groups are prepared to adapt their lifeways by means of a mutual exchange of cultural particularities – a process I term transculturation. Not all resettlement in the Philippines – as the tribulations of the Mindanao resettlement zone attest – have gone unchallenged. It is the contrary outcomes in intercultural encounters, in both Mindanao and the wider migrancy world, that were at once the catalyst for this study and a means for understanding the potential possible in such encounters. While fieldwork for this thesis was confined to the Municipality of Narra in the Province of Palawan I draw on exemplars of resettlement in the wider world to help decode the observable sociocultural transformations that have occurred in Narra. As reference points the scholarship of others investigating a wide range of archipelagic2 resettlement scenarios has been drawn upon. To comprehend and anchor the progression of cultural change in the Narra ‘contact zone’ I chose as a framing theory the Ortizian concept transculturation in conjunction with that of ethnic identity theory. To determine the trajectory, degree of interaction, rate of change and its ramifications for a wider resettlement world, the thesis poses two fundamental questions: (1) ‘What cultural changes take place among heterogeneous populations disrupted by resettlement?’ and (2) ‘Under which circumstances are transmigrant ethnocultural identities maintained, diminished or amplified during this process?’ Just as cultures are made of continuities and changes, in Narra I discerned that cultural exchange was an ongoing process, one from which observable inferences could be gleaned. Individual interviews and engagement with key informants provided the data that determined Narra as a zone of transculturation. Although the requisite intercultural interaction necessary for harmonious interethnic coexistences has failed to replicate in all resettlement milieux, this thesis suggests that as a model for such coexistences Narra provides an exemplar that is paradigmatic for ongoing migration / resettlement scenarios.

It discusses Wu’s sense of tribulation, "old morality" and the intension of passing on through education; three aspects insides the novels. On the other hand, the study also lays out the past, present and future aspects through Wu’s writing on recall of time and space, confronting the reality and prospects. By researching on historical novels of Wu Jian-Ren, other than realizing Wu’s perspective on the multiple statuses of late Qing Dynasty, which already shows his sense of tribulation, we are able to organize the sources and traces of Wu’s "old morality" concepts, and develop the new morality from it. Finally, using Wu’s concepts of education and comparing the status of education revolution of late Qing Dynasty, I figure out the shifts of Wu’s writing style could have been influenced by it. In addition, the important concept of him wanting to use historical novel as text books stands out. There is a gap in the late Qing Dynasty of former researches on historical novels. This research attempts to clarify the development of this type of novel in history and the possible form of it through the discussion of historical novels of Wu Jian-Ren; in addition to present the development of historical novel from Ming Dynasty to late Qing Dynasty.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation into the discrepancies that exist in textual interpretations within Pentacostalism, in view of the ongoing search for a viable hermeneutic model unique to Pentecostalism. Since its birth, the modern Pentecostal movement has been influenced by many other theological traditions, especially Covenant theology and Dispensationalism. Nevertheless, from this research it becomes clear that Pentecostalists themselves have contributed to the discrepancies by failing to distinguish between biblical passages related to national Israel and those related to the church. It is factual that cultural differences and theological backgrounds influence the interpretations ascribed to Scripture. Yet, this research found that scriptural interpretive discrepancies exist amongst Pentecostalists belonging to the same cultural group and same denomination. This study presents a new perspective on biblical interpretation for Pentecostalism, namely the Mediatorial View, which when consistently applied to all tectual interpretations, most certainly will reduce the number of discrepancies that exist.
Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology
M. Abstract:
This dissertation aims to understand how religions and faith develop strategies for peaceful coexistence in a refugee camp after a constant sequence of new challenges and periods of greater tribulation and adversity. The theoretical body is supported by anthropological and sociological contributions, addressing a historical analysis of religions in their contribution to peacebuilding. This work will also be supported through the Michel Agier's anthropologist and ethnographic look at various refugee camps. It will take into account the understanding of David Le Breton's understanding of the tribulation and pain, the social construction of the reality of thes sociologists Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann and the drawing of J.P. Lederach's moral imagination, that brings the observer closer to a more intimate reality in the transformation of conflicts. The relevance of this work is based on understanding how solidarity in the tribulation drives peaceful coexistence through religion among believers from different cultures and religions, and can be a useful tool in contexts of cultural and religious diversity with existing tensions.

Fredette, Gilbert James. "Tribulations and tears: stories from the youth of the Norway House Cree Nation." 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/24017.

Full text
Abstract:
The nuances within the youth of the Norway House Cree Nation along with the escalation in drugs, gangs and violence have led to climbing incarceration rates within the youth population. This has resulted in social devastation in the community over the last few decades. Statistics alone do not provide individual or community perspectives, or the nuanced understanding that insider qualitative research provides. In-depth interviewing provides personal accounts from the youth, community members, and respected Elders, and helps to provide insights on the complexity of community life that are absent from statistical accounts. By the time this thesis is defended, another noose will tighten, another fatal gunshot will be fired, and another youth will overdose on drugs or another suicide attempt might succeed. For many who manage to escape death, they will continue to face a life of abuse, poverty, and an uncertain future that may lead to a lifetime of incarceration, and premature death. This is the reality for too many youth of the Norway House Cree Nation. The community looks directly to their leaders not only to guide the economic development of the community, but at a very personal level. Our youth are very astute and observant; community leaders must demonstrate positive and healthy behaviour within the leadership in order for positive youth outcomes. Ekosani!

Manik, Sadhana. "Trials, tribulations and triumphs of transnational teachers : teacher migration between South Africa and United Kingdom." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/1376.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyse teacher migration between South Africa (SA) and the United Kingdom (UK). An understanding of teacher migration and migration patterns is of vital importance especially to SA. As a developing country, SA is losing valuable assets, namely professionals (teachers, doctors, nurses) to developed countries. There is a return stream as evident in a cohort of teacher migrants returning to SA. However, increased mobility is a direct occurrence of the forces of globalisation, and neither the loss of professionals (brain drain) nor the brain gain is unique to SA. Nevertheless, the need to understand migrant teachers' decision-making is salient: firstly, as a step in creating avenues for discourse on addressing the flight of 'home-grown' professionals and attracting ex-patriots back to their home country. Secondly, in furthering an understanding of global labour migration, and finally in developing and expanding on existing migration theories in a globalised world. This study was multi-layered. It investigated two distinct cohorts of teachers: ninety experienced teachers (part of the teaching fraternity) and thirty novice teachers (student teachers in their final year of study at Edgewood College of Education in SA). Within the category of experienced teachers, three separate divisions of teachers were identified for examination, namely premigrants (teachers about to embark on their first migration), post-migrants (SA teachers already teaching in the UK) and return-migrants (teachers who had returned to SA after a period of teaching in the UK). Various theories influenced the study: economic theories of migration, identity theories in education and Marxist labour theory. Within this theoretical framing the influence of globalisation as a process in facilitating cross border mobility was emphasized. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used in the study. Teachers' voices were favoured in the study as an expression of the complexity of their thinking, attitudes, behaviour and hence, identities. The study commenced by examining the reasons for novice and experienced teachers exiting the SA teaching fraternity, to work in schools in London in the UK. Then it explored the latter teachers' experiences in those schools and society with a view to revealing their integration into new socio-cultural and political milieus, and highlighting their transnational identities. Finally, experienced teachers' reasons for returning to SA were probed. In tracing teachers' trajectory from pre-migration (before migration) to post-migration (in the host country) to return migration (back to the home country), the study attempted to analyse patterns of transnational migration in a globalised context. The study identified the emergence of a new breed of teachers: transnational teacher-travellers. These are teachers who traverse a country's national boundaries at will. They are at ease trading their services in a global market, all in the pursuit of attaining a kaleidoscope of goals simultaneously. SA teachers were generally leaving their home country for multiple reasons of finance, travel opportunities and career progression. None of these reasons were mutually exclusive of each other. Migrant teachers' experiences in the UK were extensive, from professional growth to salary satisfaction and travel. However, teacher stress from incidents of reduced classroom discipline and loneliness stemming from family separation impacted on migrant teachers abroad, and contributed to return migration. An evaluation of the data on migrant teachers' motivations, experiences and goals led to the development of a model to understand the transnational migration patterns of teachers traversing from developing to developed countries. The model is sculptured from Demuth's (2000) three phases of migration: pre-migration, post-migration and return-migration. A basic tenet of the suggested model is that teacher migration is a non-linear process. It is initiated and sustained by complex, concurrent push or pull factors in the home country and pull or push factors in the host country. Further, teacher migration is propelled and perpetuated by the influences of globalisation and socio-cultural networks between countries.
Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2005.

Von, Maltitz Darryn Lindsay. "Apprentice to artisan trials and tribulations of apprentices in a dual system apprenticeship programme in South Africa." Thesis, 2018. https://hdl.handle.net/10539/27170.

Abstract:
A research report submitted to the Wits School of Education, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education by combination of coursework and research Johannesburg, February 2018.
Worldwide, various governments have taken significant measures to promote vocational education in an attempt to position it as an equal alternative to academic education. The problem, however, is that in many countries neither young people nor their parents perceive vocational education as having the same value as academic education (Allais, Marock, & Molebatsi, 2014). This is in contrast to Continental European countries, such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland where approximately two thirds of youth completing general schooling each year select vocational education over university education. South Africa a country in which vocational education is extremely stigmatized, is reforming its apprenticeship system and has set itself a target of qualifying 24 000 new artisans by 2020 (DHET 2015). Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges are viewed as key vehicles through which large numbers of artisans can be trained. However, employers do not have trust in the quality and capacity of public TVET colleges and have taken responsibility for training artisans through their own in-house training facilities and private training providers (National Treasury n.d.). The result is that TVET colleges have been side-lined in the supply chain for artisan development. It is against this background that the South African government is piloting a dual system apprenticeship project, which aims to: a) improve the quality of artisan training at public TVET colleges; b) build employer trust in the quality of the public artisan training system; and c) position TVET education as an attractive option for young people. This research is focused on apprentices training to become electricians through a dual apprenticeship model. The dual system integrates classroom theory with on-the-job instruction thus ensuring that learning is integrated and regularly reinforced. Through semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire, this study brings the voices of 95 electrical apprentices to bear in order to develop a much deeper, richer and nuanced understanding of how apprentices experience the artisan development system. It seeks to understand what motivates young people to enrol at a TVET college, and what apprentices’ experiences, perceptions and expectations are of dual system apprenticeships. The study provides insights into the merits and challenges of dual system apprenticeships within the South African context.
XL2019

Laurence, Andrew. "Trials and Tribulations of Ancient Starch Research: An Investigation of Contamination and Earth Ovens at Fort Hood, Texas." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/149525.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, earth ovens have been used to provide direct evidence of ancient plant use through the recovery of charred macrobotanical remains and indirectly by means of experimental archaeology and the ethnographic record. Experiments suggest that direct evidence of ancient starch-rich plant use can be obtained through the recovery of starch granules deposited on fire-cracked-rock (FCR) during cooking episodes even in regions where macrobotanical remains are scarcely preserved. Starch contamination, however, can enter into the archaeological record providing “background noise.” Therefore, this study analyzes the results of the Paluxy Sand Geophyte Project to determine if archaeological starch (starch that is both cultural and ancient in origin) can be differentiated from contamination using FCR recovered from heating elements in well-preserved earth ovens at Fort Hood, Texas. FCR, non-cultural rock control samples (RCS), and air control samples (ACS) were processed and analyzed from 27 earth ovens at 6 sites. Contamination control measures were used, including the use of a clean bench, powder-free latex gloves, washing samples prior to processing, spot sampling, and comparisons between starch granule assemblages recovered from FCR and control samples. Laboratory and field equipment were processed and analyzed for contamination. Only one feature (Feature 4 from 41CV984) yielded starch granules that are unambiguously archaeological in origin, rather than the result of contamination, whereas starch assemblages from the other sites could be archaeological or contamination in origin. Small sample sizes, differential preservation, and/or the cooking of non-starch-rich plants could account for the lack of differences between FCR and RCS samples. Finally, maize (Zea mays) starch granules were recovered from all sample types suggesting that maize starch, most likely from “powder-free” gloves and air-fall is a significant source of starch contamination.

Williams, Lisa D. "The trials, tribulations, and triumphs of black faculty in the math and science pipeline: A life history approach." 2000. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI9978572.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the career progression and life history of black mathematicians and scientists who teach on university faculties in the United States. It investigates the following questions: Why are there so few black mathematicians and scientists in colleges and universities in the United States? What is the experience of black students who express an interest in science and math? What barriers do black scientists and mathematicians face as they move through school towards their career in higher education? What factors facilitate their success? The current literature shows that there are few women and minorities teaching or working in math and science compared to white men, although reasons for this underrepresentation are still not well understood. I explored this phenomenon by conducting two sets of in-depth interviews with twelve black faculty, six women, six men, from both historically black and predominantly white higher educational institutions in the United States. My interviews were based upon a life history approach that identified the participants' perceptions of the barriers and obstacles, as well as the supports and facilitators encountered in their schooling and career progression. The findings from the study show the importance of a strong family, community, and teacher support for the participants throughout their schooling. Support systems continued to be important in their faculty positions. These support systems include extended family members, teachers, community members, supervisors, and classmates, who serve as role models and mentors. The life study interviews provide striking evidence of the discrimination, isolation, and harassment due to race and gender experienced by black male and female mathematicians and scientists. The racial discrimination and the compounding effect of racism and sexism play out differently for the male and female participants in this study. This study suggests directions for future research on the experiences of young black students who are currently in the math and science educational pipeline. It also offers recommendations for ways in which parents, teachers, administrators, faculty, advisors, and government officials can enhance the educational experiences of black students who express interest and have skills in math and science.

Beardsley, Christian Jean. "Paediatric Abdominal Pain: a case of trials and tribulations mixed with phantoms of the operating theatre? Or maybe just a case of going back to the future!" Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/117064.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Paediatric abdominal pain has long been a diagnostic dilemma facing the emergency physician and surgeon alike. The majority of childhood abdominal complaints are benign. However, appendicitis represents the most common surgical emergency of childhood and if excessive delay in diagnosis and management occurs, serious complications and death can result. Expensive tests such as biochemical investigations and ultrasonography are often over-stated in their true value to the clinician. Aim and Methods: This thesis hopes to enhance the management of paediatric abdominal pain in three ways: 1. By analyzing the epidemiology and presentation patterns in paediatric abdominal pain. This is discussed in chapter 3 and was conducted via a year’s review of paediatric abdominal pain for the calendar year 2005. 2. By investigating the role of biomarkers such as white cell count, neutrophil count, C-reactive protein and radiological investigations such as ultrasound in the management of paediatric abdominal pain. This study extrapolates some of the findings discussed in chapter 3 and examines them in greater detail. This is discussed in chapter 4 and was conducted through a ten year review of patients referred by Emergency physicians and surgeons for further work up of their abdominal pain between 1st of January 2002 and 31st December 2012. 3.By investigating the role of socioeconomic factors, heritable conditions and extra-abdominal conditions in paediatric abdominal pain. This is discussed in chapter 5 and was conducted via a prospective review conducted between 2012 and 2013. Results: 1) Appendicitis represented 6% of all presentations 2) Historical findings of most use included worsening pain, associated with nausea or vomiting which yielded moderate sensitivities and specificities (combined values over 70%). 3) Localised tenderness and percussion-tenderness were the only useful abdominal examination findings with sensitivities and specificities over 90%, respectively, when associated with moderate tenderness. 4) White Cell Count and CRP yielded sensitivities and specificities below 80% 5) Ultrasonography yielded high sensitivity (>95%) when only ultrasounds which visualise the appendix are analysed but, as the appendix is often not visualised, the actual sensitivity is only 70%. Ultrasound has a greater diagnostic yield for females than males. 6) Functional abdominal pain is the most common cause for presentation, followed by mesenteric adenitis and appendicitis. Children with Functional Abdominal Pain were more likely to have regular bowel habits and present in winter than those with other medical conditions. Of note, both groups had higher rates of parental smoking, atopic conditions and migraine than is usually seen in the general population. Conclusion: Paediatric abdominal pain is a common yet challenging scenario for clinicians. However, the most useful tools are an accurate history, thorough examination and sensible use of biomarkers and radiological investigations. Other factors affecting children should be taken into account, e.g. the family medical history, though they should not significantly alter the child’s workup. Biomarkers and radiological investigations should only be used where doubt exists as to the diagnosis, and we suggest ultrasonography only in those children in whom significant diagnostic uncertainty exists and where the clinical picture clashes with the prior mentioned investigations.

Krawitz, Lilian. "Challenging messianism and apocalyptism : a study of the three surviving Messiahs, their related commonalities, problematic issues and the beliefs surrounding them." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/4868.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is concerned with two issues, modern messiahs and their appeal, namely the highly successful Rebbe M.M. Schneerson from Chabad; and hostile, modern day, militant messianists and their beliefs, namely the USA Christian evangelicals and their rapture belief. The study directs attention at the three successful (in the sense that their movements survived their deaths) Jewish Messiahs, the 1st century Jesus, the 17th century Sabbatai Sevi and the present day, but recently deceased (1994) Rebbe Schneerson. The focus in the study falls on the latter two Jewish Messiahs, especially Rebbe Schneerson and Chabad, from Crown Heights, New York, whose messianic beliefs and conduct the thesis has been able to follow in real time. The thesis argues that Rebbe Schneerson and Chabad‟s extreme messianic beliefs and praxis, and the marked similarities that exist between all three Jewish Messiahs and their followers indicate that Chabad will probably, over time, become another religion removed from Judaism. The thesis notes that the three Jewish Messiahs share a similar messiah template, the “„suffering servant‟ messiah” template. The thesis argues that this template is related to the wide appeal and success of these three Jewish messiahs, as it offers their followers the option of vicarious atonement which relieves people from dealing with their own transgressions and permits people to evade the demanding task of assuming personal accountability for all their actions, including their transgressions. The recommendations in this thesis are prompted by the “wall of deafening silence” which is the result of political correctness and the “hands off religion” position, that prevents debate or censure of hostile militant messianism, despite the inherent dangers and high cost attached to the praxis of hostile, militant messianism and militant messianists‟ belief in exclusive apocalyptic scenarios, in modern, multicultural and democratic societies. The thesis argues this situation is not tenable and that it needs to be addressed, especially where modern day, hostile, militant messianists, unlike their predecessors at Qumran, now have access to the military and to military hardware, including nuclear warheads, and are able to hasten the End Times should they simply choose to do so.
Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies
D.
