Abstract:
Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology has unique advantages in producing complex joints in architecturally exposed steel structures. This article focuses on the process of manufacturing and investigating the mechanical properties of a reduced scale model of a trifurcated joint using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) method and mechanical tests, respectively. The orthogonal test method was used to optimize the main AM process parameters. Then the trifurcated steel joint was printed using the optimal process parameters and treated by solid solution and aging treatment. To investigate the mechanical performance of the printed joint, an axial compression test and complimentary finite element analyses were carried out. Failure processes and failure mechanisms of the trifurcated steel joint were discussed in detail. The research results show that the preferred process parameters for printing 316L stainless steel powder are: scanning power 150 W, scanning speed 700 mm/s, and scanning pitch 0.09 mm. Using these AM parameters, trifurcated steel joints with good surface quality, geometrical accuracy and tensile strength are obtained after heat treatment. Our mechanical tests and Finite element analyses results indicate that the failure mechanism in the AM trifurcated joint are similar to those of cast steel joints. Based on these results, we conclude that the AM technology serves as a promising new way for the fabrication of joints with complex geometries.

Narcissism can be conceived hierarchically at three levels: as a global construct (Level 1), as two dimensions (Level 2; grandiosity and vulnerability), and as a trifurcated model with three underlying dimensions: interpersonal antagonism, narcissistic neuroticism, and agentic extraversion (Level 3). The aim of the study was to examine how narcissism dimensions across the three levels differ in their associations with various forms of interpersonal functioning. The authors assessed multiple domains of interpersonal functioning using data collected from 447 MTurk workers, 606 students, and 365 informants. Each narcissism dimension showed unique interpersonal profiles. The profile of interpersonal antagonism largely resembles grandiose and total narcissism in its interpersonal characteristics, narcissistic neuroticism largely resembles vulnerable narcissism, and agentic extraversion does not differ much from the traditional conceptualization of extraversion in its interpersonal qualities (e.g., high communion). Future studies may benefit from studying narcissism and how it relates to other psychological constructs using the trifurcated model.

With the aim of improving farmland use efficiency without damaging the social function of farmland, Chinese policymakers have proposed the ‘trifurcation of land rights’ reform. When it comes to realization of the law, however, neither the Ownership Model nor the Bundle of Sticks Model can adequately explain this reform. The tree concept of property, which provides a new perspective in delineating property rights based on the function served by specific properties, is thus adopted. We find that this tree concept of property helps to better understand and realize the trifurcated rights on farmland in China. Also, a balance between the social and economic functions of farmland can be reached through reconstruction of the property rights involved, a process which comprises three steps: identification of the nature of the newly-established rights; configuration of the rights and duties of relevant entities; and state intervention in the enforcement of relevant rights with the aim of realizing certain social values. Finally, this paper argues that success of this trifurcated structure requires a systematic design of the Chinese Civil Code. In particular, it requests further improvements in legal rules on farmland lease.

There is broad consensus that there are at least two different dimensions of narcissism: vulnerable and grandiose. In this study, the authors use a new trifurcated, three-factor model of narcissism to examine relations between aspects of narcissism and an array of clinically relevant criteria related to psychopathology, the self, authenticity, and well-being. Neurotic and antagonistic aspects of narcissism emerged as the most clinically relevant dimensions of narcissism, bearing relations with outcomes relating to interpersonal guilt, insecure attachment styles, cognitive distortions, maladaptive defense mechanisms, experiential avoidance, impostor syndrome, weak sense of self, inauthenticity, low self-esteem, and reduced psychological well-being. Grandiose narcissism was not correlated with most forms of psychopathology and was even positively associated with life satisfaction. Nevertheless, a surprising link was found between grandiose narcissism and multiple indicators of inauthenticity. Implications for the appropriate conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of pathological narcissism are discussed.

Narcissistic traits figure prominently in classical conceptualizations of psychopathy and bear substantial empirical overlap with components of psychopathy. Yet the degree to which various widely used self-report measures of psychopathy include relevant narcissistic content has not been evaluated, especially in relation to new, multidimensional models of narcissism. Using a large undergraduate sample ( N = 432) and self- and informant-ratings of narcissism, the present study examined narcissism’s instantiation in several commonly used self-report psychopathy measures. A modern conceptualization of narcissism at three levels of hierarchical organization (i.e., Trifurcated Model of Narcissism) was applied to comprehensively evaluate narcissism’s instantiation in these psychopathy measures. Although narcissistic traits related to self-centered antagonism were well-instantiated across psychopathy self-report measures, narcissistic traits related to agentic extraversion were represented more modestly by most (i.e., Triarchic Psychopathy Measure, Self-Report Psychopathy Scale: Version III, Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale), but not all (i.e., Elemental Psychopathy Assessment [EPA]) psychopathy measures. Only the EPA contained substantial representation of all narcissism components. Given the theoretical and empirical overlap between psychopathy and narcissism, it behooves researchers to be aware of the degree to which psychopathy measures capture narcissistic content.

The heart of a domestic swine is similar to that of a human regarding anatomy, blood perfusion, and distribution of nurturing arteries. In addition to the similarities, its low cost compared with other species is also one of the reasons these animals have been increasingly used in medical schools and in clinical, surgical, and pharmacological studies. Therefore, we aimed to identify the origin and distribution of the right and left coronary arteries of boars, emphasizing the configuration and macroscopic representativity of their branches while characterizing a possible dominance concerning the type of circulation and the potential use of this animal as an experimental model, hence boars are the ancestors of the domestic pigs. The left coronary artery has bifurcated into paraconal interventricular branch and circumflex branch; or it has trifurcated into paraconal interventricular branch, the oblique branch, and into the left circumflex branch. The right coronary artery has originated the marginal branches to the right ventricle and the right circumflex branch, which has branched out in the subsinuous interventricular branch. Anastomoses have stood out among the paraconal and subsinuous interventricular branches – where a right dominant coronary artery occurred – and between the right and left circumflex branches. We concluded that the morphology and the distribution of the coronary arteries of boars resemble those of a human and, thus, our results are useful for the conception of experimental hemodynamics and possible use as process models.

Droplet fission has gained notable interest in drug delivery applications due to its ability to perform parallel operations in single device. Hitherto, droplet flow behavior in a 3D constriction was scarcely investigated. This study aims to investigate droplets fission inside a 3D bi-planar multifurcated microfluidic device. The flow behavior and droplet size distribution were studied in trifurcated microchannels using distilled water as dispersed phase (1 mPa·s) and olive oil (68 mPa·s) as continuous phase. Various sizes of subordinate daughter droplets were manipulated passively through the modulation of flowrate ratio (Q) (0.15 < Q < 3.33). Overall, we found droplet size coefficient of variations (CV%) ranging from 0.72% to 69%. Highly monodispersed droplets were formed at the upstream T-junction (CV% < 2%) while the droplet fission process was unstable at higher flowrate ratio (Q > 0.4) as they travel downstream (1.5% < CV% < 69%) to splitting junctions. Complex responses to the non-monotonic behavior of mean droplet size was found at the downstream boundaries, which arose from the deformations under nonuniform flow condition. CFD was used as a tool to study the preliminary maximum velocity (Umax) profile for the symmetrical (0.01334 m/s < Umax < 0.0153 m/s) and asymmetrical branched channels (0.0223 m/s< Umax < 0.00438 m/s), thus complementing the experimental model studies.

Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) infection reduces yield and seed quality in soybean. To test the hypothesis that virus incidence and movement within plots would be reduced in soybean with resistance to feeding by the virus' bean leaf beetle (Cerotoma trifurcata) vector, BPMV spread was evaluated in five soybean genotypes at two inoculum levels over 2 years at two locations in Ohio. Soybean genotypes included two insect-feeding-susceptible genotypes (Williams 82 and Resnik), two insect-feeding-resistant, semidwarf genotypes (HC95-15 and HC95-24), and an insect-feeding-susceptible, semidwarf genotype (Troll). BPMV incidence was assessed in individual plants at growth stages R5/R6 and R7/R8 using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Beetle feeding was visually assessed in 2004. Data for infection of individual plants were analyzed using a generalized linear mixed model, with a binomial distribution and logit-link. Within plots, BPMV incidence was highest in Resnik and Williams 82 and significantly lower in Troll. Incidence in HC95-15 was not significantly different than in Williams 82 and Resnik but incidence in HC95-24 was lower than in Resnik. BPMV incidence was also significantly (P < 0.05) affected by year, location, inoculum level and sampling date, with increasing incidence over time and higher incidence at the higher inoculum level. Beetle feeding damage was affected by the interaction of location–genotype. Significant spatial aggregation of infected plants was found for most plots but aggregation was independent of host genotype and inoculum level. Although the results indicate that BPMV infection varied by genotype, they do not support the hypothesis that insect-feeding resistance is sufficient to reduce the incidence and spread of BPMV.

Narcissism is a truly Janusian phenomenon, consisting of both narcissistic grandiosity, exhibitionism, admiration-seeking, boldness, and dominance on the one hand, and narcissistic vulnerability, introversion, withdrawal, hypersensitivity, and anxiety on the other hand. While there is broad consensus that these two seemingly contradictory faces of narcissism can be empirically discerned and have different implications for psychological functioning and mental health, there is not yet agreement on whether grandiose and vulnerable narcissism should be regarded as independent traits or as two manifestations of one personality trait. Previous research indicates that both views hold true when the level of grandiosity is considered a moderating factor: while grandiose and vulnerable narcissism are largely unrelated in the range of normal personality variation, they are correlated in the range of high grandiosity (Jauk et al., 2017b). Here, we replicate and extend this work in an independent sample (N = 891) using a more comprehensive narcissism inventory grounded in a new trifurcated model of narcissism. The trifurcated model partitions narcissism into three main personality dimensions: agentic extraversion, antagonism, and neuroticism. We found a significant breakpoint in the association between narcissistic grandiosity and vulnerability at 75% cumulative frequency of grandiosity. While grandiosity and vulnerability are unrelated below this breakpoint (r = 0.02), they are strongly correlated above (r = 0.45). In the lower range of grandiose narcissism, grandiosity draws more upon agentic extraversion and is largely associated with mental health. In the upper range, however, grandiosity is more strongly linked to antagonism and is substantially associated with fear, negative affect, and depression. These findings provide evidence for the view that grandiose and vulnerable narcissism are distinct traits at lower levels of grandiosity, but blend into an antagonistic core with signs of psychological maladjustment at higher levels. Implications for research on narcissism as a personality trait, as well as clinical practice, are discussed.

Abstract:
Bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is an economic pest of soybean in Ontario. Field cage studies were conducted in 2010-2011 to determine voltinism in southern Ontario and the effect of C. trifurcata feeding during soybean reproductive stages on soybean yield and quality. Thermal requirements for C. trifurcata development were determined in a laboratory study. Results of field and laboratory studies support the occurrence of one generation of C. trifurcata in southern Ontario. Pod-feeding increased with both number of beetles and soybean reproductive stage. An increase in defoliation and a reduction in seed quality were observed with increasing number of beetles. Monitoring programs for late-season pod-feeding should begin when degree days approach 500 (base 9.31°C). Economic thresholds for C. trifurcata during soybean reproductive stages range from 0.27 to 2.00 beetles per plant or 8 to 60 beetles per m of row.

Abstract The smart water-assisted foam (SWAF) technology is a novel enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique, which combines the synergistic effect of both smart water and foam-flooding methods. The smart water enables multilevel improvements, namely, stabilization of foam-lamella and wettability alteration of the carbonate rock, which leads to desirable oil relative-permeability behavior. Contact angle tests are the common approach for measurement of the preferential affinity of reservoir rocks to fluids. However, the laboratory methods for contact angle measurement are costly and time-consuming. Therefore, in this study, we propose a new approach to predict contact angle based on a machine learning technique. A model based on artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm was developed using 1615 datasets acquired from diverse published resources. The developed ANN-based model to predict contact angle was further evaluated by applying the trend analysis approach, which verify the correct relationships between the inputs and output parameters. The collected datasets were trifurcated into training, validation, and testing segments, so that the over-fitting and under-fitting issues are evaded. Furthermore, some statistical error analyses, namely, the average absolute percentage relative error (AAPRE), and the correlation coefficient (R) were performed to present the robustness and accuracy of the proposed model. The findings from the trend analysis showed the sound relationships between the inputs and output parameters. The statistical error analyses proved that the developed ANN-based model does not have any under-fitting or overfitting anomalies, and correctly determines the contact angle with high accuracy, substantiated by the R values of 0.9988, 0.9985, 0.9967, and AAPRE values of 1.68, 1.62, 1.81, for training, validation, and testing datasets, respectively. The proposed ANN-based model for contact angle prediction has many advantages including speed, reliability, and ease of usage. This work highlights the potential of machine learning algorithms in oil and gas applications, particularly in contact angle prediction from SWAF technology. The findings from this study are expected to add valuable insights into identifying the optimal conditions (i.e., optimum smart water and surfactant aqueous solution) for the operation sequence of SWAF technology, leading to successful field applications.
