The tropical species of the triglid subgenus Pterygotrigla (Pterygotrigla) are reviewed. Diagnoses, descriptions, and distributions are given for P. ryukyuensis, P. guezei, for two recently described species, P. saumarez and P. gomoni, and one new species. P. cajorarori, described herein. The statuses of the species of the subgenus are discussed and the subgenus is diagnosed. The subgenus lacks a nasal spine and has a short opercular spine, two features that distinguish it from the other two subgenera. In recent years there has been considerable research activity devoted to the triglid fauna of Australia, and included within this work has been an investigation of the genus Pterygotrigla. This fauna is considered to be amongst the most diverse of any region and multiple undescribed taxa occur in these seas. Two new species belonging to the subgenus Pterygotrigla are described from northern Australia. Pterygotrigla (Pterygotrigla) gomoni sp. nov. occurs in the eastern Indian Ocean on the upper continental slope off Western Australia, and P. (Pterygotrigla) saumarez sp. nov. occurs in the south

Four individuals of this species were collected from Cox's Bazar (21.77 N 91.62 E) on 5 October 2018 as bycatch. The species was taxonomically identified through the traditional morphometric method which was further validated by a molecular approach based on partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences (DNA barcodes). The two species examined in this study appear to have distinct feeding types, based on the species composition of prey and the frequency of occurrence of major food items. Tub gurnard had a more diverse diet and fed mainly on crustaceans (mysids and decapods), teleosts and molluscs, whilst long fin gurnard were less piscivorous and fed mainly on mysids and natantids. Sound production is widespread among teleosts and is usually observed in social contexts. Many fish, such as triglids, produce sounds by contracting a pair of specialised striated muscles attached to both sides of the swimbladder wall, yielding low frequency sounds made up of repeated brief pulses. Temporal features of acoustic emissions can be controlled by the rate of muscle contraction, thus providing a rich means of conveying information.
