The quenching of the [Ru(bipy)3]2+ by Cu2L2+ was studied and the data were plotted with the Stern-Volmer equation. The plot showed a break and was divided into 2 regions, <0.5 and >0.5 Cu2L2+: [Ru(bipy)3]2+ molar ratio. Quenching above the 0.5 Cu2L2+: [Ru(bipy)3]2+ molar ratio was slower (330 x 10-6 M-1s-1) than the quenching rate reaction below 0.5 ratio (387 x 10-6 M-1s-1). With Cu2L2+ being a dimeric complex the break and differences in the quenching reaction rates can be explained in terms of the stoichiometry. Specifically tailored ruthenium diimine complexes have received considerable attention as luminescent sensors for dissolved oxygen. These complexes show strong luminescence, often with long lifetimes in the range of 100 ns to 100 mus. In addition, they are both thermally and photochemically stable and their luminescence is quenched by oxygen with varying degrees of efficiency The project, which was a cooperative effort with Cornell University, was to develop a new class of bio-compatible, phosphorescent oxygen sensors for in vivo multiphoton microscopy. Part I: An improved description of the current transient produced by an abrupt change in the rate of rotation of a rotating disk electrode has been obtained by the method of orthogonal collocation. The procedure provides a formula that accurately describes the expected current transient for at least 90% of its duration.
