Abstract:
The first two seasons of the television series Star Trek: Discovery, the newest instalment in the long-running and influential Star Trek franchise, received media and academic attention from the moment they arrived on screen. Discovery makes several key changes to Star Trek’s well-known narrative formulae, particularly the use of more serialized storytelling, appealing to audiences’ changed viewing habits in the streaming age – and yet the storylines, in their topical nature and the broad range of socio-political issues they engage with, continue in the political vein of the franchise’s megatext. This volume brings together eighteen essays and one interview about the series, with contributions from a variety of disciplines including cultural studies, literary studies, media studies, fandom studies, history and political science. They explore representations of gender, sexuality and race, as well as topics such as shifts in storytelling and depictions of diplomacy. Examining Discovery alongside older entries into the Star Trek canon and tracing emerging continuities and changes, this volume will be an invaluable resource for all those interested in Star Trek and science fiction in the franchise era.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the reporting of the story of the largest group of victims of the British defeat in Burma, the civilian refugees. The majority of the refugees were Indian, and tens of thousands of them died in the long trek into India. The journalists’ coverage of this issue was not their finest reporting. They were slow to recognize the enormity of the problems raised by tens of thousands of refugees trying to reach India by land, sea and air, and the potential for a repetition of the racial discrimination that had been shown in the Malaya evacuation. Some defended the government from accusations of racial discrimination in the evacuation. Some of the most sympathetic coverage was provided in George Rodger’s photographs. Some of the journalists also had to take the refugee routes out of Burma, and some of them, Wilfred Burchett, George Rodger and Jack Belden published their stories of escape.

Abstract:
Experienced neurologists work fast. They ask few questions, maybe perform a brief examination, and they come up with the right answer. Sometimes they do neither and their conclusions are accurate—but how do they do it? This book holds the answers. The book is divided into 14 chapters which, for the most part, focus on a particular neurologic condition, namely: demyelination, headache, epilepsy and sleep, myopathy and motor neuron disorders, movement disorders, stroke, peripheral neuropathy, cerebellar ataxia, and dementia. The remaining chapters are concerned with the clinician’s initial impressions (first encounters), cranial nerves, limbs and trunk, spinal lesions, and cerebrospinal fluid. At the end of each chapter is a summary of the salient points and a few key references. The final chapter relates to the fast neurological examination. Most diagnostic clues or “Handles” are illustrated by a table, figure, or video clip to reinforce a particular message, and the text is marked with Red Flags that the clinician must be alert for.

Punske, Jeffrey, Nathan Sanders, and Amy V. Fountain, eds. Language Invention in Linguistics Pedagogy. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198829874.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume brings together multiple emerging strands of interest in language and linguistics. First is increasing attention on pedagogical scholarship in linguistics, signaled by the 2013 addition to the flagship journal Language of a series on Teaching Linguistics (see for example Sanders 2016) and by many recent panels and workshops on pedagogy at linguistics conferences around the world. Additionally, public outreach has gained greater prominence in the field, with linguists becoming more active and engaged with the public on social media and in podcasts. There has also been an increase in broader public interest in constructed languages (conlangs) and how to build them, indicated by the popularity of conlangs in film and television (e.g. Star Trek, Avatar, and Game of Thrones) and by the success of relevant books (e.g. Okrent 2010; Rosenfelder 2010; Peterson 2014, 2015). This volume showcases a variety of methods which instructors can use to tap into this public interest in conlangs and conlanging to reach a broader student population, increase their engagement with course material, deepen their understanding of linguistics and its interdisciplinary relationships, and provide opportunities for public outreach. Using language invention as a pedagogical tool is an innovative way to capitalize on the effectiveness of many modern educational approaches, such as problem-based learning, collaborative learning, and active learning, especially for a diverse cohort of learners. The methods and materials presented in this volume help cultivate students’ understanding of language, linguistic diversity, linguistic analysis, and the power of creativity.

Abstract:
Experienced neurologists work fast. They ask few questions, maybe perform a brief examination, and come up with the right answer. Sometimes they do neither and their conclusions are accurate—but how do they do it? Traditionally, the diagnostic process includes pattern recognition and probabilistic, causal, or deterministic methods. The aeronautical expert uses so-called demons—which are essentially memorized diagnostic shortcuts that help to solve problems rapidly. In this text they are called Handles. Another complementary diagnostic process is the use of caveats, or Red Flags, which are negative Handles in the sense that if one encounters a Red Flag, then the diagnosis should be reconsidered. This book provides diagnostic shortcuts, collected by the authors through their own observations, with many others identified at grand rounds and conferences. Thus a diagnosis may be reached rapidly by applying a mixture of Handles and Flags. The Handles and Flags are grouped into regions based on standard neurological history and examination, and others in relation to specific diseases. The book contains thirteen chapters, which for the most part focus on a particular neurological condition, namely demyelination, headache, epilepsy and sleep, myopathy and motor neuron disorders, movement disorders, stroke, peripheral neuropathy, cerebellar ataxia, and dementia. The remaining chapters are concerned with the clinician’s initial impressions (first encounters), cranial nerves, limbs and trunk, spinal lesions, and cerebrospinal fluid. Searle, Mike. Colliding Continents. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199653003.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Himalaya is the greatest mountain range on Earth: the highest, longest, youngest, the most tectonically active, and the most spectacular of all. Unimaginable geological forces created these spectacular peaks. Indeed, the crash of the Indian plate into Asia is the biggest known collision in geological history, giving birth to the Himalaya and Karakoram, one of the most remote and savage places on Earth. In this beautifully illustrated book, featuring spectacular color photographs throughout, one of the most experienced field geologists of our time presents a rich account of the geological forces that were involved in creating these monumental ranges. Over three decades, Mike Searle has transformed our understanding of this vast region. To gather his vital geological evidence, he has had to deploy his superb skills as a mountaineer, spending weeks at time in remote and dangerous locations. Searle weaves his own first-hand tales of discovery with an engaging explanation of the processes that formed these impressive peaks. His narrative roughly follows his career, from his early studies in the north west Himalaya of Ladakh, Zanskar and Kashmir, through several expeditions to the Karakoram ranges (including climbs on K2, Masherbrum, and the Trango Towers, and the crossing of Snow Lake, the world's largest ice cap outside polar regions), to his later explorations around Everest, Makalu, Sikkim and in Tibet and South East Asia. The book offers a fascinating first-hand account of a major geologist at work-the arduous labor, the eureka moments, and the days of sheer beauty, such as his trek to Kathmandu, over seven days through magnificent rhododendron forests ablaze in pinks, reds and white and through patches of bamboo jungle with hanging mosses. Filled with satellite images, aerial views, and the author's own photographs of expeditions, Colliding Continents offers a vivid account of the origins and present state of the greatest mountain range on Earth.

Verschuur, Gerrit L. Impact! Oxford University Press, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195101058.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Most scientists now agree that some sixty-five million years ago, an immense comet slammed into the Yucatan, detonating a blast twenty million times more powerful than the largest hydrogen bomb, punching a hole ten miles deep in the earth. Trillions of tons of rock were vaporized and launched into the atmosphere. For a thousand miles in all directions, vegetation burst into flames. There were tremendous blast waves, searing winds, showers of molten matter from the sky, earthquakes, and a terrible darkness that cut out sunlight for a year, enveloping the planet in freezing cold. Thousands of species of plants and animals were obliterated, including the dinosaurs, some of which may have become extinct in a matter of hours. In Impact, Gerrit L. Verschuur offers an eye-opening look at such catastrophic collisions with our planet. Perhaps more important, he paints an unsettling portrait of the possibility of new collisions with earth, exploring potential threats to our planet and describing what scientists are doing right now to prepare for this awful possibility. Every day something from space hits our planet, Verschuur reveals. In fact, about 10,000 tons of space debris fall to earth every year, mostly in meteoric form. The author recounts spectacular recent sightings, such as over Allende, Mexico, in 1969, when a fireball showered the region with four tons of fragments, and the twenty-six pound meteor that went through the trunk of a red Chevy Malibu in Peekskill, New York, in 1992 (the meteor was subsequently sold for $69,000 and the car itself fetched $10,000). But meteors are not the greatest threat to life on earth, the author points out. The major threats are asteroids and comets. The reader discovers that astronomers have located some 350 NEAs ("Near Earth Asteroids"), objects whose orbits cross the orbit of the earth, the largest of which are 1627 Ivar (6 kilometers wide) and 1580 Betula (8 kilometers). Indeed, we learn that in 1989, a bus-sized asteroid called Asclepius missed our planet by 650,000 kilometers (a mere six hours), and that in 1994 a sixty-foot object passed within 180,000 kilometers, half the distance to the moon. Comets, of course, are even more deadly. Verschuur provides a gripping description of the small comet that exploded in the atmosphere above the Tunguska River valley in Siberia, in 1908, in a blinding flash visible for several thousand miles (every tree within sixty miles of ground zero was flattened). He discusses Comet Swift-Tuttle--"the most dangerous object in the solar system"--a comet far larger than the one that killed off the dinosaurs, due to pass through earth's orbit in the year 2126. And he recounts the collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter in 1994, as some twenty cometary fragments struck the giant planet over the course of several days, casting titanic plumes out into space (when Fragment G hit, it outshone the planet on the infrared band, and left a dark area at the impact site larger than the Great Red Spot). In addition, the author describes the efforts of Spacewatch and other groups to locate NEAs, and evaluates the idea that comet and asteroid impacts have been an underrated factor in the evolution of life on earth. Astronomer Herbert Howe observed in 1897: "While there are not definite data to reason from, it is believed that an encounter with the nucleus of one of the largest comets is not to be desired." As Verschuur shows in Impact, we now have substantial data with which to support Howe's tongue-in-cheek remark. Whether discussing monumental tsunamis or the innumerable comets in the Solar System, this book will enthrall anyone curious about outer space, remarkable natural phenomenon, or the future of the planet earth.
