Full textThe Septuagint is the Greek translation of the Hebrew bible, worked out during the 3rd and 2nd centuries before our era. In the 3rd book of reigns (also called the 1st book of kings), the oldest text of the Septuagint propounds a description of Solomon’s temple and palace which is rather different from the account given by the Hebrew Masoretic text. The thesis deals with the discrepancies between both texts and tries to understand the purpose of the Greek text. 12 chapters are distributed in 3 main parts. In the first part the point at issue is the confusion, obvious in Greek, between temple and palace. Solomon seems to build the temple for himself and that is an alarming suggestion about the sanctuary. The translators may also have wanted to preserve the mystery of the place where god dwells on earth: he can be neither held nor enclosed. The 2nd part is devoted to the descriptions as such: technical words, materials. . . It is very difficult to locate the different spots within the temple (here again god's dwelling place is mysterious). In erecting these buildings, Israel seems to re-appropriate former cults. In the temple, there are hidden rooms which hints at some shameful secrets. The 3rd part offers a portrait of Solomon as a constructor. He is the sacred king who inaugurates the temple in an eschatological feast, foretelling the last visitation of god. But he is also the one who is anointed by the strange king of Tyre, has relations with the worship of Bacchus and with the house of Dan that the Septuagint presents as a relative of giants and demons. The characteristics of the Septuagint have inspired some passages of the New Testament and traditions among Jews and Christians
