Abstract:
The Terrestrial and Riparian Organisms, Lakes and Streams Project studied the impacts of forest harvest and riparian buffers on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in twelve fish-bearing lakes in the boreal mixed-wood forests of Alberta. Major results are outlined based on forest harvest and buffer effects on the landscape, water quality, and the aquatic ecosystem. Results from this project suggest that forest managers should be flexible in buffer width recommendations and should consider the entire watershed when determining the effects of disturbance due to complexities in the landscape.

Abstract:
The two authors created a multimedia intercultural business communication program. Multimedia is an effective instructional tool because of its ability to capture the attention of the learner and offer interactivity so the learner con trols the learning process. An appeal is made to the learner's imagination. Two constraints are the computer requirements to operate it and the length of time required to learn a multimedia software design program. The course content is described and the seven steps in developing the multimedia hypertext are detailed. The authors recommend the process with advice about what charac teristics the authors of multimedia programs need to develop.

Abstract:
The chemotactic and nitroblue tetrazolium reducing activ ities of neutrophils from 48 mercury-exposed workers were examined and compared with those of non-exposed, age- and sex-matched individuals. At the time of testing, the exposed population had a mean (± s.d.) urinary mer cury concentration of 24.0 ± 20.1 μg g-1 creatinine and in 44 of these workers urinary mercury levels were below the accepted threshold level (TLV) of 50 μg g-1 creatinine. The two neutrophil functions were significantly reduced in the mercury-exposed workers compared with the con trols. In 28 of these workers, chemotaxis was re-evaluated 6 months later. During the intervening 6 months, the level of hygiene was improved throughout the plant and uri nary mercury concentrations were determined monthly in each worker. Despite a significant reduction in urinary mercury concentrations, neutrophil migration did not return to within the normal range. These results suggest that 'safe' level mercury exposure may lead to impairment of neutrophil function.

Abstract:
Eleven headwater lakes in Alberta's Boreal Plain were monitored for nutrients and plankton 2 years before and 2 years after variable watershed harvesting (harvesting mean 15%, range 0-35%). After harvesting, variations in annual precipitation resulted in lake water residence times that differed by an order of magnitude from one year to the next. During the first posttreatment year, total phosphorus concentrations increased (overall 40%) in most lakes; however, response was most consistent in lakes that were shallow and the water column mixed or weakly thermally stratified. Chlorophyll a, cyanobacteria (Aphanizomenon-Anabaena), and cyanotoxins (microcystin-LR) increased after harvesting, primarily in shallow lakes. Zooplankton abundance and biomass decreased after harvesting, particularly in stratified lakes where edible phytoplankton biomass declined. In the weakly or nonstratified lakes, declines in zooplankton biomass were associated with higher cyanobacterial biomass and cyanotoxins. Posttreatment change in total phosphorus concentration was strongly related to weather (greatest response in a wet year) and relative drainage basin size (drainage basin area to lake volume, r2 = 0,78, P << 0,01). There was no evidence that buffer strip width (20, 100, and 200 m) influenced lake response. These results suggest that activities within the entire watershed should be the focus of catchment-lake interactions.

Abstract:
Within recent years, there has been a significant increase in popular commentary on internet trolls and what they mean for online interactions. Significant attention is often paid to framing trolls as individual, pathological, and atypical. While there is much one-sided dialogue occurring in the media, however, the literature on internet trolling remains scarce. This exploratory study contributes to the developing literature by addressing internet trolls directly. Drawing on interviews with a self-identified troll and content analysis, this thesis aims to understand how trolls operate, interact, and make meaning while highlighting the role of identity and emotions. This study finds that internet trolls are highly organized and social, in direct contradiction to the prevailing media narrative.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine whether it is possible to detect possibly malicioustweets posted by so-called trolls by inspecting the usage of sources such as url links, hashtags, user mentions and other media between clusters of tweets. This was done byutilizing the latent dirichlet allocation algorithm to find and assign topics to every tweet, clustering the tweets through their topics with the k-means algorithm. The resulting clusterswas iterated through and data fetch and summarized to examine any difference between theclusters. The results suggest that this method for finding trolls is, in combination with alexical study of the tweets text, plausible.

Abstract:
Patent trolls have changed the innovation and patent policy landscape. This thesis is an empirical event study that focuses on two landmark cases of patent troll litigation, RIM v. NTP and eBay v. Mercexchange, to determine whether pro-troll litigation outcomes significantly impact the market values of the firms in the high-tech industries they target. I find that the Supreme Court ruling in eBay v. Mercexchange did seem to significantly impact a proportion of firms in the market. The decisive factors in distinguishing affected vs. unaffected firms include a firm's R&D to Sales ratio, market value, and NAICS code specification.

Fontenoy, Claudia, Maria Ines Ortiz, and Julio Santillana.

Abstract:

Abstract:

By exposing how closely related society and the religious community are, the present case study explores the dynamics surrounding the land tenancy and the development of the buildings forming the monastery of the Ursulines of Three-Rivers. Today, the future threatens the survival of their heritage and this issue is a common one for many religious communities in the province of Quebec : the conversion and change of purpose begs the question as to what parts of their heritage must be preserved. By studying the structuring role of this Catholic institution in the formation of the urban cultural landscape of Three-Rivers, the research will undeniably contribute to understanding the processes of the urban morphology of Quebec. The study will attempt to establish guidelines for a possible future requalification of the site and a likely change of use for the buildings following the decline ofthe religious community. Inspired by the diachronic methodology and the analytical approaches created by Saverio Muratori and the Italian school of urban morphology, the research exposes the morphology of their estate and their monastery. The morphology of the building, the site and the city exposes periods of continuity and rupture through time (construction/demolition, fires/reconstruction, expansion, etc.). The case study seeks to describe and understand how the land and properties supported the development of nuns’ monastery missions and affected the urbanization of their surroundings. The research explores how the amount of support through cash, resources and other means for the building of the Ursulines’ Monastery and the maintenance of their educational and charitable missions is directly tied to the number of deeds and the material transformations of the Ursuline’s properties in the city and the countryside. Is there a relation between the community’s resources fluctuation and the evolution of their estate? The initial research question foresees the existence of a dynamic interaction between the resources of the community, the development of their estate and the evolution of a part of the city. The exchanges represented by the deeds on the Ursulines’estate structure the production of space. An interdisciplinary approach is inevitable as architecture, history, and geography are closely related disciplines. Subsequently, material evidence is used to make a qualitative assessment aiming to contribute to the operational history. This study method provides an opportunity to reflect on the heritage of religious communities and the feasibility of hypothetical projects using research knowledge as well as sound architectural reasoning. Indeed, the evolution of the site will reflect of the local will, between enlightened and informed preservation or progressive disappearing.

Martin, Dussaud Pierre. "Black-to-white hole scenario : foundation and evaporation." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020AIXM0132.

Full text
Abstract:
The physics of the beginning of the 20th century experienced two major conceptual revolutions that changed the way we see the world. General relativity, on the one hand, describes space-time on a large scale; quantum mechanics, on the other hand, deals with the microscopic behaviour of matter. Since then, physicists have been looking for a theory of quantum gravity, which would bring the two languages together. It is expected that such a theory profoundly changes our understanding of black holes, these extremely dense astrophysical objects, long remained in the shade of calculations, and now observed in droves in the sky. Quantum theory has already shown, as a first approximation, that a black hole slowly evaporates. Quantum gravity also predicts that such an object could metamorphose into a white hole, its time-reverse. In this thesis, we study the foundations of such a scenario and propose a mathematical model that includes the phenomenon of evaporation

Abstract:
Abstract This study compares the effectiveness of different trolling strategies in two online contexts: politically oriented forums that address issues like global warming, and interest-based forums that deal with people’s personal interests. Based on previous research, we consider trolling as context-bound and suggest that relevance theory and common grounding theory can explain why people may attend and react to certain types of troll posts in one forum, but pay scant attention to them in another. We postulate two hypotheses on how successful (i.e., disruptive) trolling varies according to context: that trolls’ messaging strategies appear in different frequencies in political and interest forums (H1), and that context-matching strategies also produce longer futile conversations (H2). Using Hardaker’s categorization of trolling strategies on a covert–overt continuum, our statistical analysis on a dataset of 49 online conversations verified H1: in political forums covert strategies were more common than overt ones; in interest forums the opposite was the case. Regarding H2 our results were inconclusive. However, the results motivate further research on this phenomenon with larger datasets.

Abstract:
Platelet activation in diabetes mellitus may precede vasculopathy. We have studied platelet adhesion and thrombus formation in flowing blood of diabetic patients without macro-and microvascular complications. Platelet function and release, bleeding time, fibrinogen, FVIII:RAg, Ri:Co, Triglycerides, Cholesterol and HDL Cholesterol levels, Apo A, Apo B and TK values were in the normal range. Glucose levels and HBA1 were increased. The matrix of cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (ECM) was used for adhesion studies. In an adhesion model with citrated blood (3.1%) and an untreated ECM, three male and three female diabetics (mean age 29.6 y., range 20-32 y., average duration of diabetes 10.6 y., range 2-23 y.) were compared with six age and sex-matched corf-trols. No differences in platelet coverage (en face) was obtained at low (300 s™1 ) and high (1300 s™1 ) wall shear rates, and the time dependence (1-20 min) was the same.We also used a thrombosis model, consisting of the matrix of PMA-treated endothelial cells which induces tissue factor production, perfused with blood anticoagulated with low molecular weight heparin, which does not inhibit local thrombus formation. Four male and two female patients (mean age 25.4 y., range 22-40 y., average duration of diabetes 10 y., range 2-28 y.) were compared with six age and sex matched controls. Cross sections showed equal total adhesion at 300 s™1 and 1300 s™1 after 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes perfusion. In the diabetics, spread platelets were significantly decreased at 300 s™1 after 1 and 3 min, and at 1300 s™1 after 5 min; small aggregates (< 5μM) were increased after 1 min at 300 s™1 . At 300 s™1 some patients (2 of 6) showed a faster and more extensive fibrin formation. We conclude that _ in this group of diabetics there is no difference in primary adhesion but that there is an enhanced tendency in thrombus formation and fibrin deposition.
