By exposing how closely related society and the religious community are, the present case study explores the dynamics surrounding the land tenancy and the development of the buildings forming the monastery of the Ursulines of Three-Rivers. Today, the future threatens the survival of their heritage and this issue is a common one for many religious communities in the province of Quebec : the conversion and change of purpose begs the question as to what parts of their heritage must be preserved. By studying the structuring role of this Catholic institution in the formation of the urban cultural landscape of Three-Rivers, the research will undeniably contribute to understanding the processes of the urban morphology of Quebec. The study will attempt to establish guidelines for a possible future requalification of the site and a likely change of use for the buildings following the decline ofthe religious community. Inspired by the diachronic methodology and the analytical approaches created by Saverio Muratori and the Italian school of urban morphology, the research exposes the morphology of their estate and their monastery. The morphology of the building, the site and the city exposes periods of continuity and rupture through time (construction/demolition, fires/reconstruction, expansion, etc.). The case study seeks to describe and understand how the land and properties supported the development of nuns’ monastery missions and affected the urbanization of their surroundings. The research explores how the amount of support through cash, resources and other means for the building of the Ursulines’ Monastery and the maintenance of their educational and charitable missions is directly tied to the number of deeds and the material transformations of the Ursuline’s properties in the city and the countryside. Is there a relation between the community’s resources fluctuation and the evolution of their estate? The initial research question foresees the existence of a dynamic interaction between the resources of the community, the development of their estate and the evolution of a part of the city. The exchanges represented by the deeds on the Ursulines’estate structure the production of space. An interdisciplinary approach is inevitable as architecture, history, and geography are closely related disciplines. Subsequently, material evidence is used to make a qualitative assessment aiming to contribute to the operational history. This study method provides an opportunity to reflect on the heritage of religious communities and the feasibility of hypothetical projects using research knowledge as well as sound architectural reasoning. Indeed, the evolution of the site will reflect of the local will, between enlightened and informed preservation or progressive disappearing.

Martin, Dussaud Pierre. "Black-to-white hole scenario : foundation and evaporation." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020AIXM0132.
Full textThe physics of the beginning of the 20th century experienced two major conceptual revolutions that changed the way we see the world. General relativity, on the one hand, describes space-time on a large scale; quantum mechanics, on the other hand, deals with the microscopic behaviour of matter. Since then, physicists have been looking for a theory of quantum gravity, which would bring the two languages together. It is expected that such a theory profoundly changes our understanding of black holes, these extremely dense astrophysical objects, long remained in the shade of calculations, and now observed in droves in the sky. Quantum theory has already shown, as a first approximation, that a black hole slowly evaporates. Quantum gravity also predicts that such an object could metamorphose into a white hole, its time-reverse. In this thesis, we study the foundations of such a scenario and propose a mathematical model that includes the phenomenon of evaporation

Full textComplex life cycle parasites can alter the behavior of their intermediate hosts, which often seems to facilitate the parasite transmission to the final host. How parasites achieve this and, more specifically, what is changed in the host brain remains largely uncovered. Here we studied the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), the intermediate host of the cestode parasite Schistocephalus solidus. While infected, sticklebacks have severe impairments in their antipredator responses. To date, we know that infected sticklebacks have an increase in their IMPA 1 gene brain expression, which encodes the IMPase 1 enzyme, a key step in the myo-inositol synthesis. Interestingly, IMPase 1 and myo-inositol levels are the main targets of lithium treatment in patients with bipolar disorder. Although promising candidates, we do not know if they are directly implicated in behavioral alterations in Schistocephalus-infected fish. Thus, our main objective was to perform a functional analysis of whether an alteration in the cerebral myo-inositol pathway had a direct implication in such alterations. We injected uninfected fish with exogenous myo-inositol (90 mM, n = 20) or with a saline solution (25 ppt, n = 20) to induce the production of endogenous myo-inositol, and exposed infected fish to lithium chloride (12.5 mM, n= 20). Contrary to our expectations, uninfected fish exposed to exogenous or endogenous myo-inositol did not show alterations in their behavior. However, infected fish treated with lithium spent less times wimming close to the surface, traveled a shorter distance, had a higher latency to feed, and spent more time frozen after a predator attack. These results suggest that the myo-inositol pathway might be implicated in the behavioral alterations observed in infected sticklebacks. This thesis contributes to the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying behavioral alteration in a host due to the presence of a parasite.

Full textVery high gamma-ray astronomy is a new and young physics field which aims to study the origin of cosmic rays and their acceleration process inside various astrophysical objects such as pulsars, black holes or supernovae remnants. This is also a promising way to search for exotic high energy phenomena and unknown physics. This dissertation deals with three fundamental physics topics closely connected to very high energy gamma-ray astronomy : particle acceleration in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole, primordial black holes evaporation, and indirect searches for dark matter. Each of these topics studied with data collected by the HESS (High Energy Stereoscopic System ) instrument, an imaging Cherenkov array dedicated for the detection of very gamma-rays above 100 GeV. In the first part of the dissertation, we present a rapid overview of the field of very high energy gamma-ray astronomy. A precise description of the HESS detector is then given as well as the data analysis techniques used to derive the results that are subsequently presented. The first subject is related to black hole astrophysics and concerns observations of the Galactic Center region with H. E. S. S. The source of the gamma-ray emission discovered in 2004 toward this region is unindentified. A precise determination of the source energy spectrum and variability with new data is reported here. Results are then compared with models of particle acceleration in the vicinity of Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole located at the dynamical center of the galaxy. In a second subject, the whole data collected with the H. E. S. S. Are used to search for the signature of primordial black hole evaporation through their emission of burst of gamma-rays. Primordial black holes are exotic objects the might have formed in the early stages of the Universe. As the bulk of the gamma-ray emission is likely to originate from a standard astrophysical mechanism, the Galactic Center is not an ideal searches, because they are dominated by dark matter and they are devoid of any astrophysical emission. In the last part of this dissertation we first give an overview of our current knowledge about the dark matter properties. The next chapters are then devoted to the H. E. S. S. Observations of the Canis Major and Sagittarius dwarf sphreroidal galaxies. The data analysis are used to constrain some dark matter models

Full textExcavations at the cemetery of the valladas at saint-paul-trois-chateaux (drome, france) yielded a group of 230 graves (incinerations and inhumations) dating back from between 20 a. D. And 200 a. D. , together with the foundations of a circular mausoleum. The site was most densely occupied at the end of the ist century a. D. Clusters of graves sometimes are enclosed within masonry walls or mere ditches, and so, it is possible to reconstruct the limits of funeral plots, themselves defined according to the pattern of the "cadastre b" of orange. The evolution of funeral rites brought about the inhumation of adult persons during the 2nd century; an extension of primary incinerations, from the middle of the ist century on; and, correlatively, the gradual disappearence of the traditional rite which was a secondary incineration with an urn. The most usual burial technique is secondary incineration without any urn, much simpler and poorer. There is indeed some relationship between the amount of offerings and the more or less comoplicated organization of the grave. Such an organization is dictated by very exact rules, which can be inferred, for instance, from the way objects are placed according to their respective kind (vessels, scent flasks lamps, food offerings, personal belongings. . . ) with the passin of time

Full textCosmic rays play an important role in the history of Physics, since more tan a century. Their spectrum extends by more than 10 orders of magnitude. The cosmic background radiation constrains the propagation distance and defines the class of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) which carry energy well beyond the pion production threshold, called cutoff GZK. Several experiments studied the UHECR to understand their nature and origin. The general aspects of this problems are analyzed in a critical flavor. I describe a method for the reconstruction of UHECR trajectories within the local universe, starting from the Galactic Magnetic Field (GMF). My code is able to back-propagate charged particles in a magnetic field. To determine the extragalactic magnetic field, I used a local universe map, taken from the catalog HyperLEDA. To verify the effects of these fields on UHECR trajectories, I back-propagate a beam of 40000 protons, 1 degree wide, towards the direction of Virgo cluster. The mean deviation is 0. 780. And grows up to 1. 30 for a frozen field model. These values are not negligible. I applied the same method to the triple event of AGASA experiment, added of a fourth event from HiRes. Through the plausible sources, I identified NGC3998, an Active Galactic Nucleus, of LINER type, a good candidate for acceleration. Finally, I worked also on a new kind of source: the charged black holes, which can be at the origin of UHECR emission. I sketch the acceleration mechanism and the expected flux, suggesting a correlation with gamma-ray bursts. So I propose a strategy of trajectory reconstruction, which can be improved with the next generation experiments (AUGER, SKA, LOFAR), as well as a new source to be searches through this new kind of astronomy

Full textOur study aimed to evaluate the influence of the environment on morphology, behaviour and gene expression in the brain in two freshwater populations of threespine sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, in the Bas St.–Laurent coming from Témiscouata and Rond lakes. Significant differences were found in the morphology of the animals: defensives structures of the sticklebacks are more developed in Témiscouata Lake. Moreover, juveniles of each lake were raised in common environment in a laboratory, and significant differences were found in behaviour: activity and aggressiveness were higher in population from Rond Lake. However, we observed molecular pathway in global gene expression: some neuropeptide expressions were correlated with their receptor expressions but not in all cases. Morphological and behavioural differences could be explained by the predation risk, which seemed a priori higher in Témiscouata Lake than in Rond Lake.
Zhou, Xiyin. "Deleuze, temps et éthique : les trois synthèses du temps et les trois éthiques." Thesis, Paris, Ecole normale supérieure, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015ENSU0042/document.
Full textThis dissertation plans to contribute to a study of the philosophy of time and the ethics of Deleuze, by scrutinizing the conception of time drawn from the three syntheses in Difference and repetition and that of ethics which is embodied in the article titled “Spinoza and the three « Ethics » ” (Critical and Clinical), in order to show the isomorphism between the ternary structure of the three syntheses of time and that of the three Ethics. This brings about a meta-ethical stake going beyond the deleuzian scope and also enables to recapture the conception of ethics from a perspective of time. It’s about trying to arrive at a meta-ethical reflection, on the deleuzian ethics inspired by Spinoza and Nietzsche, from this ‘problematique’ of both time and ethics. The approach and the style that are adopted to realize this theme are neither exegetical nor hermeneutical, but inclined to construct the arguments. Hence, instead of adhering to the deleuzian assertions taken for granted, by insisting on an intellectual reserve and by practicing an argumentative attitude, a genuine conceptual dialogue with Deleuze from an external point of view becomes possible. This argumentative dialogue is realized by applyingsome powerful concepts, which don’t necessarily attach to the deleuzian system: the concept of ‘presentism’ is introduced by joining it with that of the spinozian ‘expression’ in order to make all the three syntheses of time univocal; the concept of ‘abduction’ is invited to clarify the particular philosophical manner of Deleuze. Therefore, this dissertation privileges an externalist point of view in the reading of the articulation between ontology of time and ethics

Full textSexually antagonistic selection results from divergent optimal values for a trait between sexes. When this phenotype is linked to a sexually shared genomic region, it gives birth to a conflict between males and females named intra-locus sexual conflict. In this case, a given allele will enhance female fitness but will diminish male fitness or vice-versa. During the last decades, research efforts allowed to discover such traits in several taxa. These observations stress the multiple consequences that this process can have from an evolutionary standpoint. However, fitness assessment is often missing in genomic studies focusing on sexual conflict. Therefore, there is a need to provide a better understanding of the consequences of intra-locus sexual conflict on individual fitness in nature. Filling this gap of knowledge will shed light on the potential role of sexually antagonistic selection on several evolutionary processes (e.g. the maintenance of genetic diversity in populations/species). The objective of our study was to link reproductive success measurements, used here as a proxy of fitness, with genomic data from a wild population of males and females. To do so, we studied a three-spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) population from the St. Lawrence River. However, we had to face numerous obstacles in the acquisition of our samples. These complications led to major changes in the project progress and our attention finally focused on the reproduction’s dynamic of three spined stickleback in pounds First, we validated a visual method of identification for the juvenile sticklebacks by using a genetic approach to determine the species of the juveniles. We also used the otolith to assess the age of the potential parents. Then, we genotyped the potential parents and some juveniles of the year with several microsatellite markers to realize a parental assignation. The juveniles were sampled from ponds of the “Réserve nationale de l’Isle-Verte” during the reproductive period. We used parentage analysis of the juveniles sampled during the reproductive period with potentially reproductive adults from the same sampling sites. Our results suggest that adult reproduction and juvenile dispersal are largely affected by tides which represent important constraints for a rigorous estimation of reproductive success.

Full textThis thesis consists of three essays in empirical and theoretical international trade analyzing two main subjects: estimation of Gross National product function and strategic policy in presence of exchange rate pass-through and production risk. The first essay offers an innovative approach for analysis the impact on trade of regional trade agreements (RTA) with application to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Canada and the United States adopted in 1989, which was extended to Mexico as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994. More precisely, we estimate a Translog Gross National Product function and test for endogenously determined structural change allowing for anticipated and lagged responses to regional trade agreements. We found that Canada embarked on a long transition path prior to the implementation of the Canada-US Trade Agreement, a result reminiscent of Magee’s (2008) results concerning RTAs’ trade creation effects. In contrast, the United States experienced an abrupt structural change a year after the North American Free Trade Agreement took effect. This reflects that smaller economies benefitting from larger changes in terms of trade are confronted to more complex adjustment processes than larger economies. In the second essay, we empirically investigate the implications of the choice of dates when imposing local restrictions to maintain convexity in output prices and concavity in factor endowments in the the estimation of a GNP function approximated by a Translog (TL) function. Using macroeconomic data for Switzerland, we compare the TL to a Symmetric Normalized Quadratic (SNQ) function on which global curvature restrictions can be imposed. When the functions are unrestricted for curvature, convexity in prices is violated more often than concavity in factor endowments. The number of points for which both curvature conditions hold is sensitive to the date at which local restrictions are imposed on the TL, but estimated TL elasticities are robust. Through searching for an appropriate date, the TL matched the SNQ’s ability to impose curvature conditions at all points. However, many TL and SNQ elasticities differ in sign and magnitude. The likelihood dominance criterion and in-sample forecasts comparisons favored the TL. Thus, choosing a functional form solely based on the possibility of imposing global curvature conditions is not advised. In the last essay, we develop a strategic policy model inspired by the maple syrup industry. The province of Quebec accounts for 71% of the world’s production. We analyze how strategic policy choices and exchange rate pass-through are influenced by vertical linkages and production shocks which are observed after input prices are determined and “planned production” decisions are made. Downstream competition is modeled as a Bertrand duopoly with a home firm exporting all of its production to the importing country which is also supplied by a domestic downstream firm. We specifically examine two cases depending on whether the input price is negotiated between the input producer and the downstream firm in the exporting country or simply fixed by the input producer. We always assume that the upstream firm sets the input price in the importing country. Our analysis shows that the exporting government should subsidize production/exports and the foreign government should subsidize local production whatever the case chosen. We also show that when there is rationing, the exchange rate pass-through is charaterized by a threshold effect that is quite unlike the sort of theshold effect described in models with menu costs.

Full textThis dissertation is made of three distinct chapters. The first chapter investigates whether the effects of the previously identified factors vary along the debt maturity spectrum. Special emphasis is place on the extremely cases. Notably, we find that the effects of the conventional determinants vary substantially across the debt maturity distribution. Effect attenuation is observed at the lower and the higher debt maturity percentiles. The mechanism lies in the binding refinancing risk in the short extremes and the lessened refinancing risk in the long extremes. By contrast, the fact that a firm has access to public credit or not accentuates to a larger degree the heterogeneity in the observed effects of the included factors across the debt maturity distribution. This result can be explained by the argument that the refinancing risk is even more binding for firms without access to public credit. Altogether, our findings confirm our intuition concerning the heterogeneous effects of the conventional factors exerted along the debt maturity spectrum, especially for the extreme cases. In the second chapter, we examine debt maturity choices of firms from a dynamic perspective. Our results draw clear implications for a herding effect. Firms herd towards the levels as well as the changes of industry peers' debt maturities. Remarkably, this herding effect explains a much larger proportion of variation in debt maturity adjustment than firms' own characteristics. After eliminating the impact of changes in the yield curve, changes in peer firms' debt maturity policies drives debt maturity dynamics to a larger extent. Meanwhile, we find that debt maturity is persistent over time and that the persistence is primarily attributed to firms with short debt maturities. The third chapter analyzes the impact of market timing. We document that big firms with strong fundamentals attempt to “time” the issuance of long-term debts subsequent to temporary market mispricing. Particularly, for this type of firms, the effect of market timing dominates over that of herding during the periods firms raise large amounts of debts. For small firms with weak fundamentals, the effect of market timing is insignificant whereas the herding evidence is prominent

Full textLiberality subject to charges in favor of a third party beneficiary, double liberality in usufruct and bare ownership, double conditional liberality, generosity gradual, residual liberality, generosity precatory, the bonus benefit of life insurance, executed with liberality the intervention of an executor, an agent with posthumous effect, director of property given or bequeathed to a minor, are the main figures that we can gather under the term "three gifts persons". All have in common to carry the contest through a transmission, which will be the link needed between the settlor and gratified. Faced with such profusion, if the layman may appear helpless in choosing the most appropriate institution to fulfill his will liberal, it may be as much of the lawyer. Beyond the embarrassment that can be experienced in establishing what separates each of these varieties of gifts to three persons, the legal regime applicable to each of them which also raises difficulties

Full textInvestors often fail to incorporate all relevant information when they make decisions. This is a consequence of both information overload and investors’ limited cognitive abilities. The first essay shows that firms take advantage of investors’ inattention by managing the advance notice period of earnings announcements. Firms notify the date of positive earnings announcement several weeks in advance while disappointing earnings are notified at late notice. The second essay deals with firms’ international visibility and studies how communicating on English-speaking wire services impacts investors’ attention. Higher dissemination of news increases investors’ attention and improves the incorporation of information into stock prices. The third essay deals with the effects of firms’ visibility on investment policy. It shows that higher dissemination of disclosures improves firms’ informational environment and investment efficiency
