Abstract:
The Terrestrial and Riparian Organisms, Lakes and Streams Project studied the impacts of forest harvest and riparian buffers on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in twelve fish-bearing lakes in the boreal mixed-wood forests of Alberta. Major results are outlined based on forest harvest and buffer effects on the landscape, water quality, and the aquatic ecosystem. Results from this project suggest that forest managers should be flexible in buffer width recommendations and should consider the entire watershed when determining the effects of disturbance due to complexities in the landscape.

An appeal is made to the learner's imagination. Two constraints are the computer requirements to operate it and the length of time required to learn a multimedia software design program. The course content is described and the seven steps in developing the multimedia hypertext are detailed. The authors recommend the process with advice about what charac teristics the authors of multimedia programs need to develop.

Abstract:
The chemotactic and nitroblue tetrazolium reducing activ ities of neutrophils from 48 mercury-exposed workers were examined and compared with those of non-exposed, age- and sex-matched individuals. At the time of testing, the exposed population had a mean (± s.d.) urinary mer cury concentration of 24.0 ± 20.1 μg g-1 creatinine and in 44 of these workers urinary mercury levels were below the accepted threshold level (TLV) of 50 μg g-1 creatinine. The two neutrophil functions were significantly reduced in the mercury-exposed workers compared with the con trols. In 28 of these workers, chemotaxis was re-evaluated 6 months later. During the intervening 6 months, the level of hygiene was improved throughout the plant and uri nary mercury concentrations were determined monthly in each worker. Despite a significant reduction in urinary mercury concentrations, neutrophil migration did not return to within the normal range. These results suggest that 'safe' level mercury exposure may lead to impairment of neutrophil function.

Abstract:
Eleven headwater lakes in Alberta's Boreal Plain were monitored for nutrients and plankton 2 years before and 2 years after variable watershed harvesting (harvesting mean 15%, range 0-35%). After harvesting, variations in annual precipitation resulted in lake water residence times that differed by an order of magnitude from one year to the next. During the first posttreatment year, total phosphorus concentrations increased (overall 40%) in most lakes; however, response was most consistent in lakes that were shallow and the water column mixed or weakly thermally stratified. Chlorophyll a, cyanobacteria (Aphanizomenon-Anabaena), and cyanotoxins (microcystin-LR) increased after harvesting, primarily in shallow lakes. Zooplankton abundance and biomass decreased after harvesting, particularly in stratified lakes where edible phytoplankton biomass declined. In the weakly or nonstratified lakes, declines in zooplankton biomass were associated with higher cyanobacterial biomass and cyanotoxins. Posttreatment change in total phosphorus concentration was strongly related to weather (greatest response in a wet year) and relative drainage basin size (drainage basin area to lake volume, r2 = 0,78, P << 0,01). There was no evidence that buffer strip width (20, 100, and 200 m) influenced lake response. These results suggest that activities within the entire watershed should be the focus of catchment-lake interactions.

Abstract:
Changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton communities were studied in 16 lake-years during a large-scale experimental before–after study as part of the Terrestrial Riparian Organisms Lakes and Streams (TROLS) project. After forest harvesting, phytoplankton biomass and especially cyanobacterial biomass increased in some of the experimental lakes, up to an order of magnitude. Although the response of phytoplankton was not directly related to the intensity of forest harvesting, this large-scale experiment provided a unique opportunity for studying the effects of an increasing gradient in cyanobacterial biomass on zooplankton communities. Cladoceran size structure and biomass were negatively correlated with cyanobacterial biomass, suggesting that large cladocerans and especially daphnids were inhibited by the increase in cyanobacterial biomass. The increase in cyanobacterial biomass seems to have caused a significant reduction in the size structure of zooplankton communities. As no correlation was found between cladocerans and cyanotoxins, our results point more towards feeding inhibition by filamentous and colonial cyanobacteria as a possible cause for the decline in the size structure and biomass of zooplankton communities. These results suggest that the increase in cyanobacterial biomass is likely to cause a shift in the size of zooplankton communities, which will lead to a profound change in functioning of lake systems.

Abstract:
The acute and long-term effects of smoke produced by flaming and nonflaming combustion of PVC were investigated in the baboon and com pared with those produced by HCl. Four groups of three anesthetized adult male baboons ( Papio cynocephalus) were exposed for 15 minutes to air (con trols), flaming or nonflaming PVC smoke containing a targeted 5000 ppm con centration of HCl, or to HCl at a targeted concentration of 5000 ppm. The ani mals responded to flaming or nonflaming PVC smoke with an increase in frequency and minute volume, accompanied by decreased arterial pH and PaO2 and increased PaCO2 values. Although pulmonary function tests, CO2 chal lenge tests, or arterial blood gas measurements in PVC smoke-exposed animals showed sporadic differences from controls at 90, 180, or 360 days postexposure, the results did not indicate the development of impaired pulmonary function. These results were consistent with the absence of exposure-related respiratory tract pathology, although an inflammatory cell response was noted in the minor airways of one animal exposed to flaming PVC smoke. The effects of flam ing or nonflaming PVC smoke were generally similar to those of HCl, in dicating that HCl is retained in the upper respiratory tract, even in the pres ence of particulates in smoke.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the dark side of news community forums: the proliferation of opinion manipulation trolls. In particular, it explores the idea that a user who is called a troll by several people is likely to be one. It further demonstrates the utility of this idea for detecting accused and paid opinion manipulation trolls and their comments as well as for predicting the credibility of comments in news community forums. Design/methodology/approach The authors are aiming to build a classifier to distinguish trolls vs regular users. Unfortunately, it is not easy to get reliable training data. The authors solve this issue pragmatically: the authors assume that a user who is called a troll by several people is likely to be such, which are called accused trolls. Based on this assumption and on leaked reports about actual paid opinion manipulation trolls, the authors build a classifier to distinguish trolls vs regular users. Findings The authors compare the profiles of paid trolls vs accused trolls vs non-trolls, and show that a classifier trained to distinguish accused trolls from non-trolls does quite well also at telling apart paid trolls from non-trolls. Research limitations/implications The troll detection works even for users with about 10 comments, but it achieves the best performance for users with a sizable number of comments in the forum, e.g. 100 or more. Yet, there is not such a limitation for troll comment detection. Practical implications The approach would help forum moderators in their work, by pointing them to the most suspicious users and comments. It would be also useful to investigative journalists who want to find paid opinion manipulation trolls. Social implications The authors can offer a better experience to online users by filtering out opinion manipulation trolls and their comments. Originality/value The authors propose a novel approach for finding paid opinion manipulation trolls and their posts.

Abstract Trolls have become increasingly salient in contemporary Nordic film and literature. This article sets up to understand the dissemination of cinematic and literary trolls of the 2000’s by providing a comparative analysis of three contemporary texts: the Norwegian mockumentary Trollhunter (André Øvredal, 2010) and two fantasy novels, Troll: A Love Story by Finnish writer Johanna Sinisalo (2000) and Stallo by Swedish author Stefan Spjut (2012). In addition to comparing contemporary trolls to more established troll conceptualizations from Nordic folklore and children’s literature, I will also analyze trolls in a larger cultural and socio-political context by tying them to aesthetic movements such as the reality hunger in contemporary Scandinavian art and the vulnerability of the contemporary socio-political moment.

Abstract:
Personality factors, such as the Dark Tetrad personality factors (Machiavellianism, narcissism and sadism) relate to greater online trolling. Other personality factors, such as the Big Five Personality factors, honesty–humility and negative social potency, may also play a role in cyberbullying, which is an aggressive behavior similar to trolling. The purpose of this study was to predict Facebook trolling behavior based on personality factors. A total of 139 participants completed a survey on their online behavior and personality factors. Online trolling behavior positively correlated with sadism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism, and negatively correlated with agreeableness, conscientiousness and honesty–humility. A hierarchical linear regression showed that sadism, Machiavellianism and negative social potency were the only unique predictors of online trolling behavior. Trolling was unrelated to the frequency of Facebook use and the frequency of commenting. Enjoyment of trolling fully mediated the relationship between Machiavellianism and the trolling behavior. The results thus suggested that Facebook trolling behaviors may be motivated by enjoying the manipulation of others.

Abstract:
Background: Malnutrition among young children is becoming a major public health concern in low income countries like Nepal where under nutrition remains one of the primary causes of ill health. Acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRTI) and malnutrition in children are associated with morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Objective of this study was to assess ALRTI as a risk factor for malnutrition in children at Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study con-ducted at Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital over 5 months duration (August - December 2017). Under 5 yrs children diagnosed as ALRTI were taken and healthy children from same age group attending the immunization clinic were the controls. Anthropometric measurements were measured and stunting and wasting were described according to the WHO classification of malnutrition. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 18. Statistical analyses were done in the form of frequency, mean and cross tabulation. Chi-Square test was used to assess the association of ALRTI with malnutrition. P value <0.05 was considered to be sig-nificant. Results: A total of 200 children were included in this study. Children with ALRTI (n = 90) and con-trols (n =110) were analyzed. Male participants were observed more in both groups (60% and 68%). Wasting and stunting were observed more in ALRTI group than in control groups. Conclusions: This study showed there was a relation between ALRTI and malnutrition in children. So, this study has identified malnutrition as one of the major risk factor for ALRTI in under 5 yrs children.

Abstract:
Stem cell proliferation is controlled through cell cycle arrest and activation. In the central nervous system of Drosophila melanogaster, neuroblast quiescence and activation takes place in defined spatial and temporal patterns. Two genes have been identified that regulate the pattern of neuroblast quiescence and proliferation. ana, which has been previously described by Ebens and coworkers (Ebens, A., Garren, H., Cheyette, B. N. R. and Zipursky, S. L. (1993). Cell 74, 15–28), encodes a secreted glial glycoprotein that inhibits premature neuroblast proliferation. We previously showed that trolsd causes a dramatic drop in the number of dividing cells in the larval brain late in development. This study presents evidence that this decrease results from a failure to activate proliferation in the quiescent neuroblast population at the appropriate time. However, trolsd does not affect the maintenance of cell division in already dividing mushroom body neuroblasts. The quiescent optic lobe and thoracic neuroblasts affected by trolsd proliferate in a trol mutant background if they have been activated by a lack of the ana proliferation repressor, demonstrating that trolsd does not affect cellular viability, nor does trol represent a celltype-specific mitotic factor. This also shows that trol acts downstream of ana to activate proliferation of quiescent neuroblasts in an ana-dependent pathway, possibly by inactivating or bypassing the ana repressor. These results suggest that trol and ana are components of a novel developmental pathway for the control of cell cycle activation in quiescent neuroblasts.

Abstract:
Trolling is a subject of apparent academic confusion; the few studies conducted thus far yielded a variety of conflicting definitions regarding what constitutes trolling behaviour and little information regarding trolling motivations. In order to shed further light on this phenomenon, the present study aimed to (1) determine which behaviours actual trolls consider as trolling, (2) explore the motivations behind trolling, and (3) examine the online community’s response to trolling as perceived by the troll. After performing semi-structured interviews with 22 self-confessed trolls, we found that there is a variety of behaviours trolls consider trolling which can now be put in clear categories based on target and method. Three key motivations to troll emerged: personal enjoyment, revenge, and thrill-seeking. Trolling also appears to be a cyclical, self-perpetuating phenomenon enabled by the online community at large. Theoretical implications for future trolling research are also discussed.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Deep neck space infections are defined as infections that spread along the fascial planes and spaces of the head and neck. Even in the era of antibiotics, these infections can and have been potentially life-threatening conditions. The role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) and transforming growth factor-b1 (TGF-b1) genes in deep neck infections has not been studied. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of the TNF-a G-308A and TGF-b1 C-509T polymorphisms in patients suffering from infections of deep neck spaces and to determine the correlation of these polymorphisms with the values of inflammation markers [C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) count]. A total of 41 patients with infections of deep neck spaces and 44 healthy controls were screened for TNF-a G-308A and TGF-b1 C-509T polymorphisms using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. The distribution of the TNF-a G-308A genotype in patients did not reveal statistically significant correlation compared to con-trols (p = 0.483, c2 = 0.491) as well as the distribution of the TGF-b1 C-509T genotypes (p = 0.644, c2 = 0.725). The distribution of TNF-a -308 and TGF-b1 -509 alleles was not significantly different in patients compared to controls. Moreover, CRP levels and WBC counts were not associated with TNF-a G-308A and TGF-b1 C-509T promoter polymorphisms in patients with deep neck infections. In conclusion, our study suggests that the TNF-a G-308A and TGF-b1 C-509T polymorphisms are not associated with infections of deep neck spaces

Abstract:
AbstractWe study the type decomposition and the rectangular AFD property for W*-TRO’s. Like von Neumann algebras, every W*-TRO can be uniquely decomposed into the direct sum of W*- TRO's of type I, type II, and type III. We may further considerW*-TRO's of type Im,n with cardinal numbers m and n, and considerW*-TRO's of type IIλ,μ with λ, μ = 1 or ∞. It is shown that every separable stable W*-TRO (which includes type I∞, ∞, type II∞, ∞ and type III) is TRO-isomorphic to a von Neumann algebra. We also introduce the rectangular version of the approximately finite dimensional property for W*-TRO’s. One of our major results is to show that a separable W*-TRO is injective if and only if it is rectangularly approximately finite dimensional. As a consequence of this result, we show that a dual operator space is injective if and only if its operator predual is a rigid rectangular space (equivalently, a rectangular space).

AbstractOral clefts are divided into cleft lip, cleft palate and cleft lip along with cleft palate. Cleft palate is defined as an inability of palatal shelves to approximate and close during the first months of embryogenic period thus leaving an opening in the roof of the mouth and forming communication between the nasal and oral cavities. Objective:To determine the relationship of risk of oral clefts with parental health and social support.Study Design: Case Control Study.Study Setting and Duration:Various hospitals in Lahore and 3 month duration.Materials and Methods:A Case Control Study was conducted. A total of 100 subjects (50 cases, 50 controls) were included. Sampling was done by purposive method. Data was collected with the help of Cornell Medical Index Health Questionnaire and Social Support Questionnaire after taking their informed consent. Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 20.0. Mean and standard deviation were used to describe quantitative variables like age. Test of significance were applied.Results:56% of cases were females and 44% were males. Mean age of mothers was 27 and fathers was 31. Most mothers were uneducated (36%) while most fathers were educated till matric (34%). Income of most parents was in the range of 10,000-20,000 PKR (44%). 24% of controls were females and 76% were males. The associations of oral cleft was found significant with parental respiratory, cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, musculoskeletal, skin-related, genitourinary health, easy fatigability, health habits, anxiety, anger, paternal nervous system health, sensitivity, and mater-nal frequency of illness, depression and feeling of inadequacy (p < 0.05). Maternal social support catego-ries indicated that cases were less supported than con-trols: number of persons available and level of satisfaction (p < 0.05).Conclusion:Oral clefts have a multi-factorial etio-logy. Hence, an effective preventive program should take into account parental health and social support factors.Key Words:Non-syndromic Oral Clefts, Parental Health, Social Support.

Abstract:
A troll is usually defined as somebody who provokes and offends people to make them angry, who wants to dominate any discussion or who tries to manipulate people’s opinions. The problems caused by such persons have increased with the diffusion of social media. Therefore, on the one hand, press bodies and magazines have begun to address the issue and to write articles about the phenomenon and its related problems while, on the other hand, universities and research centres have begun to study the features characterizing trolls and to look for solutions for their identification. This survey aims at introducing the main researches dedicated to the description of trolls and to the study and experimentation of methods for their detection.

Abstract:
This paper investigates online propaganda strategies of the Internet Research Agency (IRA)—Russian “trolls”—during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. We assess claims that the IRA sought either to (1) support Donald Trump or (2) sow discord among the U.S. public by analyzing hyperlinks contained in 108,781 IRA tweets. Our results show that although IRA accounts promoted links to both sides of the ideological spectrum, “conservative” trolls were more active than “liberal” ones. The IRA also shared content across social media platforms, particularly YouTube—the second-most linked destination among IRA tweets. Although overall news content shared by trolls leaned moderate to conservative, we find troll accounts on both sides of the ideological spectrum, and these accounts maintain their political alignment. Links to YouTube videos were decidedly conservative, however. While mixed, this evidence is consistent with the IRA’s supporting the Republican campaign, but the IRA’s strategy was multifaceted, with an ideological division of labor among accounts. We contextualize these results as consistent with a pre-propaganda strategy. This work demonstrates the need to view political communication in the context of the broader media ecology, as governments exploit the interconnected information ecosystem to pursue covert propaganda strategies.

Abstract:
In the contemporary world of stress and insecurity in developing countries like Pakistan, emotional intelligence has earned critical importance as an effective tool for organizational leadership. Literature suggests that when human devotion, motivation and commitment are the keys to organizational success, transformational leadership with sufficient command over emotional intelligence is the only package that can help successful operations of the organization. This study tests the same model of positive relations between EI & TRFLS and negative links of EI with TRSLS in the 'local government' work environment using local government leaders as the unit of analysis. Literature and field surveys for data collection and statistical tools for data analysis have been applied to serve the purposes of this study. The results confirm the hypothesized relationships between predictor and criterion variables with specific 'statistics' warranting further work on strengthening the interactions between TRFLS and EI.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractInternet trolling, a form of antisocial online behavior, is a serious problem plaguing social media. Skillful trolls can lure entire communities into degenerative and polarized discussions that continue endlessly. From analysis of data gathered in accordance with established classifications of trolling-like behavior, the paper presents a conversation analysis of trolling-like interaction strategies that disrupt online discussions. The authors argue that troll-like users exploit other users’ desire for common grounding – i.e., joint maintenance of mutual understanding and seeking of conversational closure – by responding asymmetrically. Their responses to others deviate from expectations for typical paired actions in turn-taking. These asymmetries, described through examples of three such behaviors – ignoring, mismatching, and challenging – lead to dissatisfactory interactions, in that they subvert other users’ desire for clarification and explanation of contra-normative social behavior. By avoiding clarifications, troll-like users easily capture unsuspecting users’ attention and manage to prolong futile conversations interminably. Through the analysis, the paper connects trolling-like asymmetric response strategies with concrete data and addresses the implications of this nonconformist behavior for common grounding in social-media venues.

Abstract:
The increasing presence of wild animals (especially carnivores) in cities has become a concern in contemporary news stories, scientific writing, urban planning, and works of fiction. This concern seems to demonstrate that the movement, and more specifically the success, of wild animals in urban space threatens our idea of the city as an inherently unnatural, man-made environment, thereby destabilizing what distinguishes human from animal. Johanna Sinisalo’s novel Troll: A Love Story explores and exploits this instability by making the “animal” in question one from folklore, surrounding it with conflicting discourses of zoology, mythology, and sociology. Although trolls were, in the world of Sinisalo’s novel, discovered as true mammals in 1907, the text never unambiguously disproves the humanity of the troll species. In examining news articles, recent work in urban ecology, and non-fiction by journalists such as Mike Davis and Jenny Price, I will discuss how humans attempt to assert their humanity in opposition to wild animals by figuring animals in the city as monstrous or by making them into tourist attractions – both ways of remaking the animals’ existence in the city unnatural again.

Abstract:
SummaryAsking whether E. Kraepelin's early dementia praecox and disease concepts (1896) are still valid today, we condensed his early theory into four theses:1) schizophrenia is a disease entity, distinguishable from affective psychosis. 2) It is caused by a specific neuropathology. 3) It usually manifests itself in adolescence or early adulthood. 4) Underlying schizo- phrenia is a progressive disease process that leads to defects and dementia.Having tested whether Kraepelin's dementia praecox and modern schizophrenia are actually comparable, we studied 1) how schizophrenia and depression are linked or separable in terms of symptoms, risk factors and illness course from onset until five years after first treatment contact. The analyses are based on a population-based sample of 130 first admissions because of schiz- ophrenia, 130 age- and sex-matched first admissions because of unipolar depressive disorder and 130 “healthy” population con- trols from the study area. 2) Results will be presented that, though not very specific, confirm Kraepelin's farsighted hypothesis of a neuropathological basis of the disorder. In this context it will be discussed whether the brain changes are developmental or degenerative in origin. 3) The distribution of age of onset extends far into old age. In a sample of 1109 consecutive first admis- sions because of nonaffective psychosis from the total age range it was shown that age-dependent developmental factors mod- ify certain components of symptomatology linearly and significantly. The main risk factors, too, significantly change with age. 4) Long-term course was examined in three studies of epidemiologically recruited first-episode samples: Study 1 included five cross sections over 5 years, Study 2 was a prospective pre-post-comparison over 12 years supplemented by a retrospective assessment of the illness course (IRAOS) and Study 3 encompassed 10 cross sections over fifteen years. Finally, the disease concept of schizophrenia, as it presents itself in the light of current knowledge, will be outlined and compared with Kraepelin's earlier and later view of the disorder.Declaration of Interestthe paper is based on a lecture (Lettura magistrale) presented at the SIEP Sesto Congresso Nazionale, “Gli Esiti della Schizofrenia - Trattamenti, Pratica nei Servizi, Valutazione” in Sirmione, November 6-8, 2003. This paper was written within the framework of the German Research Network on Schizophrenia and was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research BMBF (grant 01GI 0236). The ABC study was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) as part of the Special Research Branch (Sonderforschungsbereich) 258 at the Central Institute of Mental Health until December 1998. From January 1999 to Sept. 2002 it was continued to be funded by the DFG.
