Abstract:
Ten two hectare forest plots were established on two distinct reserves, one mainly on volcanic deposits and the other on sedimentary and alluvial soils. These were investigated for their site carrying capacity and species diversity in relation to edaphic factors, using accumulated basal area as the growth indicator. A soil survey was conducted in each reserve to classify the soil types at the series level. Five two hectare sites each reflecting different soil types were chosen from each reserve. All trees of 10 cm dbh and over were enumerated on each soil type and identified to species level.

Abstract:
Phosphorus (P) is essential to life on Earth and often the limiting nutrient in agricultural systems. P fertilizer is thus an essential resource to maintain food security. In the last half century, agricultural intensification has led to an increase in P fertilizer consumption from 4.6 to 17.5 Tg of P/year to meet rising global food demand. Mineral P (i.e., phosphate rock) is a non-renewable resource in the context of the Anthropocene, and its price is vulnerable to global market fluctuations. Increased efficiency of P use on farms is considered the most effective strategy to conserve P. The s

The thesis was conducted to investigate soil fertility changes and assess the sustainability of agroecological management in different land-use systems of the southern Ecuadorian Andes using quantitative and qualitative methods. Ecuador still holds the highest deforestation rate of all Latin American countries which also has a large impact in the research area by forest conversion into agricultural land. Agricultural land-use systems in the research area are multifaceted due to heterogeneous biophysical and socio-economic conditions. To map this diversity, land-use systems were investigated in

A floresta Amazônica é o maior bioma tropical do mundo e desenvolve serviços ambientais estratégicos no planeta.
