Full textAtypical maternal behaviors (measured with AMBIANCE) have been the subject of several recent studies . Accumulating evidence shows their connection with the development of disorganized attachment in children. However, very few data are available on their evolution over time and variables of family ecology that are likely to influence their appearance and development as the child grows. This is precisely what this study has attempted to do. Using a mixed sample, adult mothers (n = 44) and adolescents mothers ( n = 83) were observed interacting with their child when the child was age 6,10 and 15 months. Trajectory analysis revealed that the two groups of mothers differ across the six scales of AMBIANCE. The first group, forming the majority of mothers, showed a low average level of atypical maternal behavior and tended to maintain a low level or to reduce their use of atypical behaviors toward the child as he grew up. The other group of mothers, forming the minority, showed a medium to high level of atypical behavior and tended to increase their use over time. Among the variables of the family ecology studied, being a teenage mother, having lived several stressful life events during the past year and how the mothers perceive some elements of child temperament showed significant associations with trajectories of atypical maternal behavior.

Full textHyperkinetic disorder in childhood is characterised by attention deficit, motor hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Many authors look for the causes of hyperkinesis in a brain dysfunction; others underline the importance of socio-affective factors. Recent experimental studies conclude to the existence of several etiologic factors possible. Disorders of thought are broached in the view bion's theory that points the linking between the intellectual and the affective growth of the child. The study of the family context shows the communicative value of hyperkinetic behaviour. The approach of the family system theory understands the symptom in its regulating function of the dynamic in the family. Psychoanalytical approach that is based on the theories of freud and lacan permits to consider the symptom a personal message subjected by the desire of the particular child. Based on this theoretical elaboration, the present study analyses the relation disorders of five hyperkinetic children. Besides the collection of data concerning the development of the child, psychological assessments including psychometric and personality tests were established. Structural analysis of the narration of the child at the projective tests allowed to understand what he wanted to express. Finally, a semi-directed conversation submitted to a both formal and qualitative analysis with the parents permitted the understanding of the relational quality of the parents with their own parents and to locate the parental projections on the child. The results show that hyperkinetic disorder in childhood is situated in a familial context marked from anxiety raised by some early traumatic events. Maternal depression can also be a factor of disorders. On the level of the parents, there is sometimes an unconscious demand of coalescing relations from the mother associated with the absence of father-son relationship. Consideration of the relations at the transgenerationnel level reveals to be indispensable to the comprehension of the child's status in the actual familial context

Full textThe aim of this study is to know if some aspects of social and school adjustment of 3 to 5 year old children are specifically linked with attachment to mother and more particularly with attachment to father. In this way, specific attachment representations to mother and to father of 138 children were explored with a french adaptation of the Attachment Story Completion Task (Miljkovitch & al. , 2003), peer intercations were observed during free play sessions at school, behaviour problems were evaluated with a french adaptation of the Child Behavior Check List (Fombonne, 1988) filled out by mothers and chilren’s school adjustment was evaluated with a teacher questionnaire (Florin, Guimard & Nocus, 2002). Results show that wether some aspects of social and school adjustment are specifically linked with attachment to mother and to father, some others seem to be simultaneously linked with attachment to both parents. Finally, whereas very strong links between quality of attachment relations and representations to both parents were found, taken together our results suggest that children develop independent relationships and specific attachment representations to mother and to father. Moreover, these results lead us to reconsider the way to evaluate quality of attachment relationships and to explore children’s specific attachment representations

Full textThe prevalence of overweight and obesity in childhood has grown very rapidly over the past 20 years with the risk of an increasing prevalence of associated metabolic complications and cardiovascular morbidity. In a study including 308 overweight and obese children, we show that one out of two obese children presents with metabolic syndrome (MS) or insulin résistance syndrome which frequency increased with age, degree of adiposity and mother's obesity. Insulin résistance (IR) plays a major role in the development of the metabolic complications and could precede the other metabolic complications in obese children. Total fat mass and its distribution in overweight and obese children are influenced by age and parental history of obesity. Total fat mass is associated with MS whereas visceral fat mass is associated with IR. Our data suggest that visceral fat mass starts to accumulate in childhood influenced by several factors such as sex and ethnicity, and seems to be metabolically active even in childhood. Although we find a low frequency of glucose tolerance disorders, cases of type 2 diabetes occur in childhood. Type 2 diabetes in obese children is characterized by a marked IR compensated by an elevated insulin secretion able to maintain normal fasting plasma glucose levels, followed by a rapid and severe impairment of insulin secretion. Deterioration of B cell function appears less than 4 yr after diagnosis and insulin secretion could play a major role in therapeutic approaches

Full textFreud brought to light the psychic causality of hysterical somatic symptoms. But, what is the somatic symptom in early infancy ? Can we define it as an expression of psychic defense or as a substitute physiological defense for an impossible psychic approach of the environment ? The psychodynamic orientation given by the psychoanalytic concept of repression is an essential contribution to the problem of resistance through-out the treatment. One question remains concerning the persistance of non organic fonctional disorders in children when their perception is not yet co-ordinated with a mental représentation but is a condition of psychic development as well as an activation of signal of a biological rythm disorder. This point justifies the investigation of the relation between selective fonctional disorders and relational experiences where the environment reactions amplify the intensity of the baby’s emotional tensions, reinforces the relief of these tensions into muscular activity and finally increases reflex organic mechanisms against pain. Among the factors that provoque lasting fonctional disorders, we can take into consideration the repeated miss-matching of the baby’s physiological need of tension regulation with his mother’s emotional reactions. We can also mention the obstruction effect of non matching interaction to the transition between perceptive experiences and the primary psychic defense that is memory

Full textDysphasic children, considered from a multi-axial approach, set both pratical and transnosographic theoretical problems. One of the pratical problems deals with promotive actions to favour access to leaming supports. The main theoretical problem is the development of thought in children, who, though intelligent show deep difficulties to reach both the containers and contents of knowledge. With ajurriaguerra (1965) dysphasic children were considered as having the same cognitive development as other children. The general hypothesis has taken the opposite view. The general hypothesis about the disorders of the cognitive development of dysphasic children has been widely confirmed. The 26 dysphasic children, ranging from 6 years 6 months to 10 years, compared to 26 non-dysphasic matching children show notable difficulties. The discourse of the dysphasic child's mother is studied as the setting of the linguistic and cognitive development. A dominant constating factitive thought is given prominence : minimum emergence of affect in discourse. Linguistic indicators of the "factitive" thought are spotted out. Activity linked with thought is disturbed with visible consequences on the discursive linking activity as well as on others, on cognitive activity and on the combination into new pattems. Prototypes of activity linked with thought are found in bion, with linking abstraction and in bruner with the modularisation and binding of consitutive acts. The alterations of this activity linked with thought are related to the elaboration of the depressive position and to processes leading to agenesia. This study of severe "noeto-linguistic" disorders sheds light on the conditions of the building up of cognitive thought and language. It also suggests lines of intervention

Full textAccording to their degree of deafness, deaf children have veri different profiles. Here, we will speak mainly bout severe hearing handicap. To communicate and choose the proper aid to this communication is the main concern of adults in charge of these children. Having followed about twenty deaf children for four years, we noted syntactical, lexical and enunciative mistakes on the written and oral levels. Certains grammatical phenomena are seen to be common to all the children formal simplification of expression, with priority given to meaning by means of recurrent words along with some proximity rules. Pn the lexical level, the three dimensions of the word, function, nature and meaning are not always linked; on the syntaxical level, visual logic and other non-oral linguistic phenomena interfere with the order of elements. A serie of tests validate the observations made during the spontaneous expression. The conclusions show a much lesser degree of mastery of language compared with non-handicapped children. The types of mistakes very according to the age and the language spoken at home. Deaf children fall far behind in language if pedagogical and technical solutions are not applied very early

Full textPsychopathic personality traits are associated to multiple couple difficulties (Savard, Sabourin, & Lussier, 2006, 2011) that can also have negative effects on adult romantic attachment (Savard, Brassard, Lussier, & Sabourin, 2015). Despite high levels of relationship distress, insecure attachment and dysfunctional personality traits in couples seeking treatment (Daspe, Sabourin, Péloquin, Lussier, & Wright, 2013; Lussier, Wright, & Sabourin, 2008; Mikulincer & Shaver, 2007), the joint contribution of psychopathic traits and attachment insecurities to couple distress has only been explored in community couples so far. The aim of the study is to examine the dyadic association between primary and secondary psychopathy and attachment related anxiety and avoidance in couples seeking treatment. The sample consisted of 183 couples, who completed French versions of the Self-Reported Psychopathy Scale (LSRP; Levenson, Kiehl, & Fitzpatrick, 1995; Savard, Lussier, & Sabourin, 2014) and the Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire (ECR; Brennan, Clark & Shaver, 1998; Lafontaine & Lussier, 2003). Actor-partner interdependence model analyses revealed that in both partners, primary and secondary psychopathy was associated with attachment anxiety and avoidance (actor effects). Partner effects between primary psychopathy and attachment anxiety were also found in both men and women, whereas only men’s secondary psychopathy was related to women’s attachment anxiety. Our findings complement those reported in the community and demonstrate the importance to consider attachment insecurities when working with couples who are presenting psychopathic personality traits.

Full textThe study pretends to establish and analyse the relations between dysorthography and anaclitism, about children about to leave primary school. Both terms are first taken in a descriptive sense. To refer to an anaclitic, constitued against separation, leads to face separation diffucultes in two different ways, according to the two senses of the verb "to separate" : first in its transitive sense : to part, to divide, then in its reflexive sense : to differentiate. Dysorthography may throw a light on the two aspects : on analysis and synthesis troubles, on a general tendancy to deny "little differences" that shows a major difficulty to stand on real oedipian positions. Full textThe thesis aims to study the contribution of attachment security and classroom goal structure to students’ achievement goal orientation as a function of perceived academic competence and anxious symptomatology during the transition to high school. It includes two prospective studies steming from the School Transition, Adaptation and Perseverance Study (ETAPE ; www.etape.fse.ulaval.ca). In this study, 636 students and their families participated, which began in 2005, when students were completing their 6th grade of elementary school. The first study explored the role of student characteristics, namely perceived academic competence and anxious symptomatology, as potential mediators of the relationship between attachment to the mother before the transition (6th grade) and achievement goal orientation at the end of the first year of high school. The results of structural equation analysis showed that perceived academic competence mediates the link from attachment security to the mother to approach mastery goals. With respect to anxiety symptoms, no mediation effect was found but, rather, a sequence in which students’ perceived security to their mother predicted a lower occurrence of their anxiety symptoms, which are themselves predictors of performance-avoidance goals. The second study investigated the contributions of attachment security to the mother in the 6th grade and perceived classroom goals structure in math class to student characteristics, i.e, academic competence and anxiety symptoms during 1st year of high school, used in the first study as determinants of achievement goals. It also examined the moderating role of attachment security in the relationship between classroom goals structure and students characteristics of the students. The results of the structural equation analysis revealed that both attachment security and perceptions of a mastery climate in math class predicted higher perceived academic competence during the 1st year of high school, over and beyond the contribution of gender and academic competence perceived in grade 6. The results also showed that the attachment security of in the 6th grade predicted lower anxiety in the 1st year of high school and that a motivational climate perceived as performance-oriented during the 1st year of high school predicted higher anxiety, particularly among students who perceived their relationship with their mother as more insecure. This result suggests that attachment security to the mother at the end of elementary school can undermine the potentially harmful exposure to a classroom goals structure valuing performance and social comparison in the 1st year of high school. Keywords: attachment security, classroom goals structure, achievement goals, academic competence, anxiety, early adolescence.

Full textThe sleep is an essential function in the life. In fact, in spite of the progress the knowledge has made on this purpose, it still remains selective and incomplete. We have undertaken a study of the sleep, considering three levels. The first one is about actual french parents'representations of the child's sleep and the rituals going with bedtime. We questioned one hundred subjects using a standardized questionnaire. The second level concerns older representations, through a dual approach : study of literary texts and paediatric nursing manuals. The third level treats of iconographic representations of practices and customs at bedtime. These processes were used to bring out the roots of the behaviours and representations which condition the actual parental practices. Our study attempts to the specific problem of the sleepfalling instant. We postulate that the parental representation of bedtime and of the child's sleep has an influence on the practices and rituals at bedtime. There is a relationship between how to tackle the child'bedtime and the idea adults have of the little child's ability to be autonomous. Although we are witnessing, in the contemporary western society, a decrease in some rituals, the stress is more and more put on the importance of the transitional object. It seems that a child's progressive moving away from the mother's body becomes apparent with the history, by comparison with the observations pointed out in other societies. Done without transition, this separation would make more difficult the sleep-falling instant. We introduced the terms of physiological time and social time. In case of disturbances during the sleep, an inadequacy between these two times is often pointed out. On the other hand, the term of zone of favourable sleep-falling instant takes into account the existence of an appropriate transition to the little child's sleepfalling instant

Full textThe factors likely to influence the emergence and the development of subitizing were analyzed, by testing a group of cerebral palsied (CP) children. The first study evaluates the CP children's subitizing limit, and its link with motor ability implied in the counting process. The second study compares subitizing, pattern recognition, and visuo-spatial abilities. Finally, a third study examines the effect of reversing the figure/background on subitizing limit. Most CP children have a lower subitizing limit than control children of the same age. However, subitizing limit improves with age in both groups, whatever the reversing of figure/background. CP children's subitizing limit appears to be delayed by visuo-spatial deficiency. It is likely that this deficiency does not allow a normal recognizing and memorizing of visual patterns. These results are congruent with the pattern recognition models of subitizing, and suggest that visuo-spatial routines are necessary to memorize these patterns

Full textThe aims of this study were (a) to evaluate the level of emotional and behavioral problems of Tunisian children and adolescents using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self-Report (YSR), (2) to ascertain if there were differences related to sex, age, and socioeconomic status (SES), (3) to compare this study’s findings to those of multicultural/international studies having used the same instruments, and (4) to evaluate the level of parent/youth agreement. Method: Participants: 1,342 children and adolescents aged 6-18 years were rated by their parents using the CBCL, an inventory of children and adolescents’ behavioral and emotional problems that was developed by Thomas Achenbach (1991). Out of these youths, 674 aged 12-18 years, independently filled out the YSR, which is a self-report parallel form of the CBCL. Results: On both CBCL and YSR, the level of problem scores showed small differences related to sex, age, and SES. Similar to previous studies, girls presented more Internalizing problems whereas boys presented more Externalizing problems. Scores on both instruments are much higher than the mean of the mean scores of other countries; however they are similar to scores reported in Algeria, Greece, and Puerto Rico. The level of parent/youth agreement was overall higher than reported in previous studies

Full textThe aim of the present thesis is to improve our knowledge on the semantic memory functioning during childhood and adolescence. For this, two research topics are suggested: (1) the evaluation and the study of the normal development of semantic memory; (2) its dysfunction in the presence of a unilateral or bilateral hippocampal lesions. Our first research focuses on the creation of eleven original tests of verbal and nonverbal semantic memory. Their validation with 193 healthy children aged 9 to 16 years indicates a considerable influence of the age and the grade level on the development of semantic memory. However, all areas of semantic knowledge do not follow the same developmental trajectories. Our second study, involving the assessment of 27 young patients undergoing surgery for temporal or frontal epilepsy, shows that some semantic knowledge could be dysfunctional during development. In particular, the temporal surgery seems to cause a specific impairment of semantic memory, indicating a significant involvement of temporal structures in the acquisition of semantic knowledge. Our third study focuses on childhood permanent amnesic syndromes by providing two cases studies. Using our assessment battery, we demonstrate that disorders of semantic memory could coexist with those traditionally identified in episodic memory

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health problem impacting millions of people around the world. The physical and psychological consequences of this phenomenon on the victims are multiple, such as chronic pain, sleep difficulties, a decrease in the level of activation, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and low self-esteem (Black et al., 2011). The perpetration of IPV behaviors is associated, among other things, with adult attachment insecurity (Gou & Woodin, 2017, Sommer, Babcock, & Sharp, 2017). The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between the attachment dimensions of dating partners (i.e. abandonment anxiety and avoidance of intimacy) and their respective perpetrated levels of psychological IPV. A sample of 279 heterosexual couples was recruited from a couple counseling clientele at Laval University psychology clinic to answer questionnaires on attachment and frequency of perpetrated behaviors of psychological IPV. Contrary to expectations, there is no interaction relationship between partners attachment and psychological IPV behaviors reported within the couple in this sample. Pathway analyzes of the APIM model indicate that high rates of anxiety in an individual predicts an increase in one's own psychological IPV behaviors, while high rates of avoidance in an individual predicts in some measures a decrease in psychological IPV behaviors in his partner. These results support the influence that insecurity of attachment can have on marital dynamics in IPV context. They will contribute to the development of better practices in conjugal intervention where one or both partners use violence within their couple.
OBJECTIVES: 15 % of two year old children present with a delay in expressive vocabulary in the context of otherwise normal development. It is associated with delays in socio affective development as well as negative features of parental language stimulation. Moreover, half of these children will have a persistent language problem. A review of the literature on late-talkers underscores the heterogeneity found within that population. It also points to the relevance of studying language delay at two within a multifactorial perspective. These two conclusions support the aims pursued in this study: (1) to identify sub-groups in these children and (2) to compare these sub-groups with regards to factors known to be adversely associated with the development of language as well as to examine the effect of the accumulation of risk factors. METHODS: 68 children aged 18 to 35 months who present with a language delay and one their parents take part in the study. A variety of instruments measure the linguistic skills as well as other characteristics of the children, parents, families and of their environment. RESULTS: The cluster analysis uses the variables of language comprehension and expression. Three sub-groups found along a continuum of severity of language delay are identified and described. In a second analysis, the children who present exclusively with a vocabulary delay (n=52) are compared to those who have a wider reaching language delay (n=16). Results reveal a strong association between the level of linguistic skills and the cognitive development of the more impaired children. Moreover, the accumulation of risk factors is associated to belonging to the group presenting with a more pronounced language delay. CONCLUSION: With an aim of better characterizing this sub-group of the population, the results confirm the importance of taking into account language skills which go beyond the expressive vocabulary delay in two year old children. Association between a wider reaching delay of language and an the accumulation of risk factors further suggests an intervention which, in addition to stressing the linguistic aspects, must target the family and environmental characteristics of these children.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to examine the links between the frontal lobes and language disorders. The frame of reference and concepts were drawn from pragmatic and interactionist theories of development. Two important linguistic activities of everyday life were studied : for production, abiding by the rules of conversation (in an interview situation) and for comprehension, relating the structure of utterances to the context (for requests and promises). The first study showed that frontal brain-damaged adolescents had trouble abiding by the rules inherent in the interview format ; in addition, their discourse varied with the addressee's attitude.
