Full textThe observation of children from 2 to 3 years of age, in the classroom, has shown their difficulties in understanding the picture as a symbolic substitute of reality. Wether it concerns the representation of a (concrete) object or the representation of a situation, young children are unable to perceive the information received from an icon in the same they perceive the information received from the corresponding concrete object. Dependent upon perceptual data, they cannot inhibit their motor behaviours in the presence of the image and still conceive of it as an abstract (symbol). From action to representation we have attempted to demonstrate the mediating role of perception in the cognitive elaboration of the representation. Our suggestion is to teach the abstract image to young children before asking that they learn by using the abstract image. With this intention, we propose concrete learning situations in class which should proceduce the establishment of psycho-semiotic attitudes in young children from 2 to 3 years of age. The results of our research have led us to think that the. Perceptive-motor-representative exercices which are specific to the transformation of the object to its image are an interesting way to reach our psycho-pedagogical objective

Full textThe visual attention (VA) span is defined as the amount of distinct visual elements which can be processed simultaneously in a multi element array. Estimated using whole and partial report tasks, VA span abilities contribute significantly to reading performance, independently of the phonological skills. Moreover, VA span disorder could explain developmental dyslexia, independently of the phonological deficit. The work reported here was aimed at investigating the properties of the VA span in dyslexics and normal readers on the one hand, and the VA span nature and specificity in dyslexic readers on the other hand. In the first set of studies, we wanted to determine whether the VA span disorder could be generalized to others stimuli than letters, like digits, colours or objects. In normal readers, results show that processing is different for colors and objects stimuli in comparison to letters and digits stimuli and that the latter ones are specifically related to reading. Furthermore, we underline that dyslexic children present a VA span disorder specific to letters and digits stimuli. The aim of the second set of studies was to demonstrate that the global report task first of ail reflects the VA span capacities. Although the global report task involves diverse cognitive components such as iconic memory and rehearsal activity, we demonstrate that the deficit presented by dyslexic children in the global report task mainly reflects a VA span disorder. The third set of studies concerned the nature of the visual attention processing (simultaneous vs. Sequential) impaired in developmental dyslexia. Our results suggest that the simultaneous dimension is a key dimension in the visual attention span notion and is specifically damaged in developmental dyslexia. Finally, in the last set of works, we studied the effects of spatial modifications of letter-strings (spacing and orientation) on the VA span abilities. Although the visuo-spatial modifications influence the VA span abilities, we show that VA span abilities restrict the simultaneous processing and are essential in reading activity

Full textThe objective of this study was to assess attachment representations of mothers with visual impairment and the quality of attachment of their children. A longitudinal and prospective study of 12 dyads of mothers with visual impairments and their baby was made when children were aged from 3 months to 4 years. Attachment representations of mothers were investigated using the Ca-Mir which had to be adapted to their special needs. A semi-structured interview allowed to describe the mothers'own chilhoods. Attachment behaviors of children were observed when they were aged 18 months with the Strange Situation and when they were aged 4 years, attachment representations were explored using the Attachment Story Completion. An analysis of early interactions with the CIB at 3, 6, 9 and 15 months was also performed to assess, among other criteria, maternal sensitivity. The results show a less secure attachment profile, more detachment and less concern among mothers with visual disabilities than among mothers from a control group. During the Strange Situation test, children of visually impaired mothers appeared to be significantly more insecure than children of a control group. The task of Attachment Story Completion showed a deterioration of the categories of attachment between the ages of 18 months and 4 years. Finally, the analysis of early interactions showed that visually impaired mothers have a maternal sensitivity of lower quality than mothers in a control group. The results of this study show the importance of taking special care of these mothers and their children

Full textMany students understate their visual discomfort, although it may have an educational impact. We studied the prevalence of visual disorders among students and compared these results to their academic level.Between September 2012 and April 2013, four hundred students between fifteen and twenty two years of age responded to a questionnaire followed by a visual screening (refraction and binocular vision) in order to detect any visual discomfort that they might be unaware of. When visual problems were detected, the participants were asked to have an ophthalmology and orthoptic assessment. Then the participants’ academic performance was appraised and subjects were reviewed to determine whether wearing the appropriate optical correction or taking orthoptic care have improved their grades. The results indicate that the questionnaire score is very significant to predict the probability of having academic difficulties or vision problems, that ametropia and accommodation anomalies increase academic difficulties and that binocular vision disorders are even more disadvantageous. Moreover, not spontaneously expressing visual discomfort doesn’t mean that there are no visual defects.Once controlled by variables commonly used to explain academic difficulties (e.g. academic delay, occupational category, gender, etc.) a significant proportion of participants’ academic difficulties are related to vision anomalies. Therefore, vision screening among adolescents appears to be necessary, especially if there are academic difficulties. In addition, the questionnaire used in case history seems to be an effective tool to detect vision anomalies and should be validated with a larger sample

Full textHyperkinetic disorder in childhood is characterised by attention deficit, motor hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Many authors look for the causes of hyperkinesis in a brain dysfunction; others underline the importance of socio-affective factors. Recent experimental studies conclude to the existence of several etiologic factors possible. Disorders of thought are broached in the view bion's theory that points the linking between the intellectual and the affective growth of the child. The study of the family context shows the communicative value of hyperkinetic behaviour. The approach of the family system theory understands the symptom in its regulating function of the dynamic in the family. Psychoanalytical approach that is based on the theories of freud and lacan permits to consider the symptom a personal message subjected by the desire of the particular child. Based on this theoretical elaboration, the present study analyses the relation disorders of five hyperkinetic children. Besides the collection of data concerning the development of the child, psychological assessments including psychometric and personality tests were established. Structural analysis of the narration of the child at the projective tests allowed to understand what he wanted to express. Finally, a semi-directed conversation submitted to a both formal and qualitative analysis with the parents permitted the understanding of the relational quality of the parents with their own parents and to locate the parental projections on the child. The results show that hyperkinetic disorder in childhood is situated in a familial context marked from anxiety raised by some early traumatic events. Maternal depression can also be a factor of disorders. On the level of the parents, there is sometimes an unconscious demand of coalescing relations from the mother associated with the absence of father-son relationship. Consideration of the relations at the transgenerationnel level reveals to be indispensable to the comprehension of the child's status in the actual familial context
