Abstract:
The concept of the dithyrambic dramatist ‐ introduced by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche in the fourth essay of his Untimely Meditations of 1873‐76 ‐ is one of the most performance-oriented concepts to emerge out of the nineteenth century in which theatre was often associated with dramatic literature. This article investigates the nature of the dithyrambic dramatist by tracing, in the first instance, the underlying musical perspectives ‐ already evident in The Birth of Tragedy of 1872 ‐ which led Nietzsche to develop the concept. In the second instance, the author articulates what may b

In this article, I present an interpretation of Kierkegaard’s ethics in terms of Gilles Deleuze’s distinction between immanent ethics and transcendent morality. I argue that Kierkegaard’s skepticism towards moral prescription, his emphasis on the single individual as the basis of normative evaluation, and his view of Christianity as somehow “beyond” the scope of moral obligation are all functions of a Deleuzian conception of immanent ethics as a non-moralistic form of normativity. On this basis, I argue for two conclusions: first, that Kierkegaard’s work is better understood through this frame

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores conceptions of neo-liberalism in the context of the development of tourism research. Although its intellectual origins are somewhat earlier, neo-liberalism as an economic philosophy is mostly seen as growing in global dominance from the late 1970s and early 1980s. However, the starting point for this discussion is the extensive and ongoing debate about neo-liberalism's general influence on higher education in particular. This is justified in terms of the corresponding growth of tourism in higher education since the 1970s. Putting it another way, in the English-speaking world (and, some would argue, beyond), the apparent growth of neo-liberalism in higher education is coincidental with the rise of tourism as a subject in that milieu. Accordingly, we might not unreasonably expect the development of tourism as a relatively new area of enquiry to more strongly reflect the supposed tropes of the neo-liberal project than is the case with more established subjects. Following from this, the chapter seeks to explore the extent to which the neo-liberal project has influenced tourism research, finally reflecting on the implications of such an analysis.

Abstract:
This chapter analyses Bonnefoy’s experimentation with sound in Les Planches courbes, published in 2001. Offering a close reading of the eleven-poem sequence ‘La Voix lointaine’, it investigates how Bonnefoy uses the motif of listening to a distant voice to present self-presence as a space of resonance. It examines how the poet critiques visual tropes that present subjectivity as a scene of self-reflection and instead uses the rhythms of poetic voicing to explore how consciousness emerges from the reverberations between linguistic, sensual, and material forces. Analysing how Bonnefoy and Nancy both present resonance as an originary dynamic, this chapter investigates how they both use this larger conception of resonance to explore how human subjectivity emerges from an endlessly mobile and relational physical world.

This chapter pairs President Polk's entry into the Mexican War with President Roosevelt's movement toward World War II. Using the relational conception, it argues that while both Polk and Roosevelt behaved independently and made good use of the distinctive capacities of the executive branch, Roosevelt's behavior was more deeply relational in that it was more subject to legislative rebuff. Roosevelt's constitutional authority was also buttressed by a defensive security necessity. After World War II, repelling troops at the border was transparently revealed as an inadequate standard for judging whether a president was using the office's war powers “defensively.” Confronted with this transparent destabilization of the category of “defensive,” the United States embarked on a project of global institution building to reduce its vulnerabilities.

This chapter examines theatre's double role as both rival and tutelary figure for New Wave directors. From Alain Resnais's theatrical fictions to Jean-Luc Godard's Brechtian conception of the cinematic medium, not forgetting Jacques Rivette's incorporation of theatre rehearsals and theatrical plots into the filmic fabric, the theatre takes centre stage in the New Wave as cinema's embodied 'other'. The chapter explores the manifold interactions with theatre and theatricality in New Wave film, focusing on intermedial tropes such as mise en abyme and metalepsis, but also interrogating the theatre's capacity - as postulated by Rivette - to reveal cinema to itself. We will see that the collective practices of avant-garde theatre of the 1950s and 60sopen up the concept of the auteur, creating a new space for improvisation and creative collaboration.

Abstract:
From the 1970s, consumers were becoming increasingly desensitized to the established tactics and tropes of the hard sell. The need for continued, effective audience engagement led to the emergence of a new methodology—born out of the growing body of sector-related academic research, based on emotional rather than rational appeals with much greater emphasis on the creative content—that allowed the persuasion industry to respond to this challenge. This chapter looks at the key methodological developments in the persuasion industries and their impact, namely the so-called creative revolution in advertising, the conception and adoption of account planning and market positioning, and the emergence of brand marketing. There is also an analysis of the mass media and their role in the delivery of persuasion. Developments and challenges affecting the UK’s burgeoning public relations sector are discussed.

Abstract:
This chapter takes aim at Victor Davis Hanson's The Western Way of War and its highly influential and popular conception of how hoplites fought. It critiques the orthodox view—especially the version of Hanson—concerning the actual weight of the hoplite panoply, which the chapter argues was far lighter than the traditional estimate of about seventy pounds. The chapter proposes a different interpretation of the various stages of hoplite battle, such as the hoplite charge into battle. In this view, the evidence supports neither the picture of a mass collision between armies nor the concept of a mass pushing of troops or the account of the othismos as a rugby scrum. Furthermore, this chapter contends that the phalanx did not consist exclusively of hoplites before Marathon. It suggests, however, that even in the fifth century hoplites never actually fought in a cohesive formation.
